Superintendent’s Message & Construction Update

A Message from the Superintendent

As I look back over the past school year, images flash through my mind just as images adorn this edition of Cornerstone: our seniors walking across the field at graduation, veterans interacting with Willis students, drama students performing before packed houses, our girls swimmers running away with another relay, our boys basketball team winning thriller after thriller, our Woodward third graders bent over their desks hard at work, and so many more. Those images serve to illustrate another amazing year gone by.

This year was full of planning as we begin construction on the buildings that will welcome our ever-growing student population. We again started the year with a solid academic rating from the state and our initial results for this year show another substantial step forward. One of the highlights from our last report card was the “A” we received in value added, a measure of how much our students have grown versus the rest of the state’s kids.

Of course, not everything that can be measured matters and not everything that matters can be measured. Those things that cannot be measured but are visible and important around our district – things like caring staff members who challenge students, provide safe and welcoming learning environments, and work consistently to improve the lives and futures of the students entrusted to their care – continue to be sources of great pride for all of us on the Delaware City Schools team.

Next year promises to be both interesting and challenging as we finalize plans and begin construc-tion projects at several schools. The state continues to change how they measure the performance of our schools and teachers, and we will work to understand those measures so that our district will show in the best light possible. The legislature will take up another biennium budget over the course of this coming school year. We continue to work with our legislators to provide appropriate funding for growing districts like ours. The last state budget failed to send our school district more than $12,000,000 that the legislature’s own formula indicated our schools should have received from the state of Ohio. That is money that either is being made up by our local taxpayers or programming, such as full-day kindergarten or smaller class sizes, that we can’t provide to our students and families. Our taxpayers are encouraged to contact our legislators to ask them about plans to end that shortfall.

None of the achievements of the district, staff, or students illustrated in this report would be possible without the continued support of this wonderful, dynamic community. We remain committed to growing and improving our district alongside this community as it grows and improves. Our students and our constituents deserve our best.

I hope you enjoy this issue of Cornerstone. We look forward to an incredible 2014-2015 school year!

Sincerely,

Paul CraftSuperintendent of Schools

Construction ProcessAfter a year of planning and designing, Delaware City Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 28 to officially kick off the building process as approved in the bond issue.

Schultz Elementary School will see the first additions as the area surrounding the school continues to grow and be developed. Work will also begin at Hayes High School this fall to begin site prep work and address the outside facility changes including athletic fields, parking and site drainage.

Work at Dempsey Middle School has been postponed until Spring 2015 to give the district additional time for design work to bring costs inline with original estimates and to ensure the project can be completed with minimal disruptions to the educational process for students at Dempsey.

Summer Fun/Summer LearningThrough a committed effort, Delaware City Schools offers a variety of summer opportunities to help students succeed and stretch their learning during the summer months. In addition to the traditional summer school courses, students can find many activities that promote learning, fun and making new friends.

Summer LibraryThe summer library program at Woodward Elementary School makes books available to help students find new and exciting books for summer reading. Adding to the fun, students earn rewards when they complete their reading.

Summer CampsSummer is an excellent time for students to expolore new interests and experiment with hands-on activities. Camp Invention and Summer SACC Camps are just two opportunities offered through Delaware City Schools. Camp Invention encourages creativity and allows students to create a new invention everyday while fostering collaboration skills through group projects. Thirty-four students participated in the inaugural Camp Invention.

SACC summer camps also offer students a wonderful opportunity to have fun while learning and making new friends. With a wide variety of themes that change each week, every student will find activities of interest. Themes include sports, CSI, foods, insects and animals, fitness, and many more. Students are treated to field trips and swimming days as well.

Education Beyond DelawareAn important part of the academic preparation for today’s students is to introduce students of all ages to a global society. Delaware City Schools provides many opportunities for students from world languages and Skype sessions to hosting exchange students. This year, with the assistance of an anonymous donor through the Delaware County Community Foundation, two trips were organized for students to experience a week of learning in another country.

Nine Hayes High School students and the world language teacher spent their spring break week in Delaware’s Sister City of Baumholder, Germany. In addition to spending time in school with their host student, Hayes students visited a World War I battle field, army base, and local points of interest.

Five Dempsey students and two staff members also spent a week in Sakata, Japan. Dempsey Middle School has hosted groups from Sakata for the past 16 years, but this is the first time a group from Delaware has made a reciprocal trip. Students spent time learning about Japanese school, food and culture. Students visited historic sites and museums with their host families. The trip ended with a brief visit to the world’s largest city, Tokyo.
