Kajsiab House Hmong Students Scholarship Fund _____________________________________________________________________ ___________ Why is education so important? Why do people go to college? Today, the world is very competitive and without an education it is difficult to accomplish our dreams. Hmong families have been resettling in the United States for almost four decades. Wisconsin has close to 60,000 Hmong residents. Dane County is home to more than 5,000 Hmong people. Approximately 1,200 are school age children enrolled in Dane County schools. Four hundred are high school students, and unfortunately, many drop out each year. A Hmong Student Scholarship Fund will help more Hmong students stay in school to pursue higher education. We strongly believe that education is the key to Hmong prosperity. It will help lift Hmong families out of poverty. Why is education important for Hmong people? Education is the key to success and fullfilling our dreams. Education opens the door to opportunity. Education builds confidence, enhances decision making, and broadens our horizons. Education increases our earning potential and gives us stability. Education is a treasure to posess and it is something that can never be taken from us.

Why is education so important? Why do people go to college? Today, the world is very competitive and without an education it is difficult to accomplish our dreams.

Note the qualifications, scholarship requirements and deadline to submit your materials. Failure to return the required documents may result in disqualification.

➢ Six $500 scholarships will be awarded to school seniors who are planning to pursue higher education in an accredited college or university.

➢ Our mission is to promote higher education among the Dane County Hmong population. (This may expand to other counties in Wisconsin based on scholarship funding/growth in future years). We hope to expand the awards to other Southeast Asian communities in the near future.

➢ Our vision is to see more Hmong students pursing higher education.

Scholarship Criteria and qualification

Award Amount $500Number of Awards 6

Qualifications:

● Any Hmong student, regardless of clan name, who is currently in his/her senior year for the 2015-2016 school year

● The student must live in Dane County, Wisconsin● The student must graduate in June 2016● All majors will be considered● Scholarship is unrestricted● Maintain a GPA of 3.0

Additional requirements:

● Must show proof of admission letter and enrollment in an accredited college or university.

● Must provide high school transcript.● Must provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the

applicant’s academic, leadership, and service engagement (one from a teacher; one from a community member who is not a relative or family member).

● Must submit a 1,000 word essay describing your leadership qualities, short-and long-term goals, and why you are interested in attending an accredited college/university.

● Must return all scholarship materials no later than May 30th, 2016.
