But to have the edge, you need to constantly be on the lookout for new opportunities and be ready with your best application .
Don’t miss out because you’ve failed to plan . Here’s a checklist to help you get prepared and take the first step in defining your career .
» Prepare your resume and cover letter, but spend time customising each application . It’s important to tailor your application to different roles, and it pays to have someone proofread your work .
» Know yourself. Reflect on what you’ve enjoyed studying, visualise where you would like to work, think about the qualities you’ll bring to the company and what type of culture you would enjoy .
» Seek opportunities with an open mind. Look for companies that offer the right opportunities for you, but also be open to different roles that can help you get your foot in the door to your dream career or enable you to learn a complementary skill .
» Understand the company. Do research on the company you’re applying for . How does it fit with your personal goals?
» Prepare for your interview. Use the information you’ve gathered through your research and self-reflection and practise answering sample questions .

As experts in the provision of superannuation accounting services in a complex and ever-changing regulatory environment, the SMSF Accounting team focuses on providing a complete range of end-to-end accounting support services for self managed super funds (SMSFs) .

INSTITUTIONAL EQUITIESDefining opportunityThe E&P Australian Institutional Equities and Fixed Interest sales/trading teams provide personalised sales and trading service to domestic and global institutional investment managers .
As part of the Institutional Equities team you will be exposed to:
» equity or fixed interest sales, including promoting firm research of ASX-listed companies to buyside portfolio managers, developing long/short investment ideas via proprietary company insights, IPOs and capital markets transactions
» equity or fixed interest trading, including sourcing liquidity, block trading, execution of large or illiquid company orders

RISK AND COMPLIANCEDefining process
The Risk and Compliance team is responsible for developing and maintaining the governance and risk management framework across the organisation . Through a rigorously controlled process this team of specialists collectively ensure the firm adheres to relevant Australian financial laws and regulations as well as all internal policies and procedures .
As part of the Risk and Compliance team you’ll be exposed to:
» supporting rollout of new systems, product and project changes across the business
» monitoring wealth advice to support adviser teams
» enhancing risk and compliance controls across all business units
» maintaining critical governance (risk, regulatory and legal) frameworks across the firm
» facilitating the adoption of changing legislation into existing frameworks
» developing risk and compliance policies for each business
» reviewing licensing, registrations and operations to maintain company standards .

MEET SWETA DEWAN Manager (former graduate) – Superannuation
No one day is ever the same at Dixon Advisory . While Sweta keeps to her daily routine, she’ll also work collaboratively across different tasks .
“During the day I’ll keep clients’ accounts up to date by updating transactions and will prepare end-of-year financials as well as annual returns for SMSFs,” she explains . “I’ll also attend client meetings .”
Initially starting as an assistant accountant, Sweta worked closely with her manager before being promoted to her current role . During that early period she was able to ask any questions she had to ensure she got the valuable mentoring and training necessary for expanding her skillset and furthering her career in superannuation accounting .
“We would have scheduled catch-ups to talk about how we were going, how the team was going and to discuss any concerns,” Sweta says . “What I continue to enjoy is that I get to work with clients as well and you see them in meetings, so there’s a lot of interaction .”
And, as Sweta explains, working with clients is one of the most fulfilling aspects of her role .
“Just helping them with their queries and managing their superannuation funds – it’s very rewarding .”

MEET MILLIE O’BRIEN Investment Adviser (former graduate) – Wealth Management
Initially commencing her career in the role of Associate Adviser, Millie fondly recalls her time as a new graduate .
As her day progressed, Millie would multitask across various responsibilities, from researching market trends to updating accounts, attending meetings and speaking with clients over the phone .
“I would often speak with clients over the phone who call to see how the market, or a specific stock, was moving,” she says .
Millie reveals that helping clients achieve their financial goals was one of the most rewarding aspects of her role as Associate Adviser and still remains her key focus .
“I enjoy working with our advisers to provide high-quality advice to our clients,” she says . “It’s a nice feeling being able to reflect on great performance with them .”
During those early days, the afternoons would present Millie with the opportunity to catch up with her team – made of three senior advisers and two associates – to track her progress . She says the team shares the same drive and appreciation for hard work, with a great sense of camaraderie between them .
“I would regularly catch up with all my advisers to chat about what’s been going on, what’s going to happen in the next few weeks or months, and what the opportunities are to set more short-term goals,” she explains . “They’ve always been really great at discussing more long-term goals as well, which is good .”
I enjoy working with our advisers to provide high-quality advice to our clients. It’s a nice feeling being able to reflect on great performance with them.
