ASSISTED PARKING BRAKEFault finding - Introduction

1. SCOPE OF THIS DOCUMENT

This document presents the fault finding procedure applicable to all computers with the following specifications:

2. PREREQUISITES FOR FAULT FINDING

Documentation typeFault finding procedures (this manual):– Assisted fault finding (integrated into the diagnostic tool), Dialogys.

Wiring Diagrams:– Visu-Schéma (CD-ROM), paper version.

Type of diagnostic tools– CLIP

3. RECAP

Procedure

To save power, the UCH on the Laguna II Phase 2, Espace IV phase 1 and 2 and Vel Satis phase 1 and 2 interrupts the + after ignition feed power supply after 3 minutes.

To perform fault finding on a computer, it is possible to force the + after ignition feed for 1 hour by applying the following procedure:

– Press the unlocking button on the card,– Insert the card into the reader,– press the Start button (interrupting the timed + after ignition feed mode),– press and hold the Start button for more than 5 seconds until the engine immobiliser warning light starts to flash

rapidly (4 Hz).This forced + after ignition feed mode remains active for 1 hour.Pressing the Start button or removing the card from the reader cuts off the forced + after ignition feed but does not cut off the timed forced + after ignition feed mode. As long as one hour has not elapsed the + after ignition feed function restarts the forced + after ignition feed for the remaining time.

Only affects the Scénic phase 2:

To run fault finding on the vehicle's computers, switch on the ignition in fault finding mode (forced + after ignition feed).Proceed as follows:– card in the card reader (keyless vehicle scenario 1, basic, not hands-free and scenario 2, top of the range,

hands-free),– press and hold the starter (for more than 5 seconds) with start-up conditions not met;– connect the diagnostic tool and perform the required operations. To cut off + after ignition feed, proceed as follows:– disconnect the diagnostic tool,– press the Start button twice briefly (less than 3 seconds).– ensure that the + after ignition feed has been cut off by checking that the computer indicator lights on the instrument

panel have gone out.

Fault context.

Only affects Vdiag 08 and 0C.

Explanation of the fault context counters. The are three different counters:

PR022: Dating counterPR018: Presence counterPR019: Frequency counter

Dating counter: The counter starts when the fault appearsEach time the computer switches on and the fault is stored or present, the counter increases by 1 up to 255.

Presence counter: As soon as the fault is present, the counter goes to 15.If the fault becomes stored, each time the computer switches on, the number decreases by 1 (from 15 to 0) and goes back to 15 again if the fault reappears.

Frequency counter: Number of times the present fault appears; it sets to 0 when the fault appears. It increases each time the fault moves from stored to present. The maximum value of this counter is 15.

Faults

Faults are declared as either present or stored (depending on whether they appeared in a certain context and have disappeared since, or whether they remain present but have not been diagnosed within the current context).

The present or stored status of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is switched on after the + after ignition feed (without any system components being active).

For a present fault, apply the procedure described in the Interpretation of faults section.

For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and apply the instructions in the Notes section.

If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the fault.

If the fault is not confirmed, check:– the electrical lines which correspond to the fault,– the connectors for these lines (for oxidation, bent pins, etc.),– the resistance of the component detected as faulty,– the condition of the wires (melted or split insulation, wear).

Conformity check

The aim of the conformity check is to check data that does not produce a fault on the diagnostic tool because the data is inconsistent. Therefore, this stage is used to:

– carry out fault finding on faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint.

– check that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault recurring after repairs.

This section gives the fault finding procedures for statuses and parameters and the conditions for checking them.If a status is not behaving normally or a parameter is outside the permitted tolerance values, consult the corresponding fault finding page.

Customer complaints - Fault finding chart

If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK but the customer complaint is still present, the fault should be processed by customer complaints.

A summary of the overall procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the form of a flow chart.

4. FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE (continued)

Wiring check

Fault finding problemsDisconnecting the connectors and/or handling the wiring harness may temporarily remove the cause of a fault and create other faults.Electrical measurements of voltage, resistance and insulation are generally correct, especially if the fault is not present when the analysis is made (stored fault).

Visual inspectionLook for damage under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment.Carefully check the fuses, insulators and wiring harness routing.Look for signs of oxidation.

Tactile inspectionWhile manipulating the wiring harness, use the diagnostic tool to note any change in fault status from stored to present.Check that the connectors are properly locked.Apply light pressure to the connectors.Twist the wiring harness. If there is a change in status, try to locate the source of the fault.

Inspection of each componentDisconnect the connectors and check the appearance of the clips and tabs, as well as the crimping (no crimping on the insulating section).Make sure that the clips and tabs are properly locked in the holes.Check that no clips or tabs have been dislodged during connection.Check the clip contact pressure using an appropriate model of tab.

Continuity and insulation checkCheck the continuity of entire lines, then section by section.Look for a short circuit to earth, to + 12 V or to another wire.

If a fault is detected, repair or replace the wiring harness.

5. FAULT FINDING LOG

You will always be asked for this log: when requesting technical assistance from the Techline, for approval requests when replacing parts for which approval is obligatory, to be enclosed when returning monitored parts on request. The log is needed for warranty reimbursement,

and enables better analysis of the parts removed.

6. SAFETY ADVICE

Safety rules must be observed during any work on a component to prevent any damage or injury:– make sure that the battery is properly charged to avoid damaging the computers with a low load,– use the appropriate tools.

IMPORTANT!

IMPORTANTAny fault on a complex system requires thorough fault finding with the appropriate tools. The FAULT FINDING LOG, which should be completed during the procedure, enables you to keep track of the procedure which is carried out. It is an essential document when consulting the manufacturer.

IT IS THEREFORE COMPULSORY TO COMPLETE A FAULT FINDING LOGEVERY TIME A FAULT FINDING PROCEDURE IS PERFORMED

ASSISTED PARKING BRAKEFault finding - System operation 37B

37B-9

FPA Vdiag No.: 0C, 04 and

08 Fault finding - System operation

PRESENTATION OF THE PARKING BRAKE:

The assisted parking brake provides the following functions:– keeps the vehicle stationary when stopped (parking brake).– 'dynamic' emergency brake (if the main brakes fail).– automatic braking force adjustment according to the slope (adapted application),– assisted parking brake application when the engine is stopped (depending on configuration),– easy start with assisted parking brake release (depending on configuration),– manual application and release by pulling on the lever.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND OPERATION:

The system consists of the following components: A control lever with brake application indicator light.

– For applying and releasing the parking brake.

The control unit (computer) houses the electric motor, the brake cable hooks, slope sensor and force sensor.– The slope sensor controls locking according to the angle of the slope.– The force sensor checks and corrects the force applied to the brakes.

A clutch pedal position sensor to aid starting.– Informs the computer of the vehicle's clutch position (the position of the pedal enables the torque necessary for

vehicle movement to be obtained).

Two mechanical cables.– Convey the mechanical force to the rear brakes.

An emergency control via cable (in the central storage compartment on the LAGUNA, VEL SATIS and ESPACE and in the boot on the SCENIC).– Enables the rear brakes to be released in the event of the battery or parking brake failing.

The warning lights and symbol on the instrument panel.– Indicate application, releasing and any faults on the parking brake.

Note:The parking brake cable play compensation is performed automatically by the control unit.

37B-10

FPA Vdiag No.: 0C, 04 and

08

MANUAL OPERATION:– The parking brake is engaged by pulling on the control lever (normal braking immobilises the vehicle).

– Over-application can be obtained by pulling and holding the lever for 5 seconds (maximum application for steep hills or when the vehicle reaches the maximum permitted weight).

– When the parking brake is applied, the computer super-applies if the force applied to the rear brake callipers is insufficient (pads cooling) or if the computer detects slight vehicle movement. This detection is limited to 24 hours.

– The parking brake is released when the control lever is applied fully and the release switch is pressed.

ASSISTED OPERATION:

Restrictions on assisted brake release in automatic transmissions:Assisted release is not allowed in the following cases:

– Opening the driver's door followed by engagement of a gear (gear lever in position D).

– Engagement of a gear (gear lever in position D) followed by opening the driver's door.

Note:When the parking brake is applied, the red light on the instrument panel (brake pads) and indicator light on the lever are lit.Below 6 mph (10 km/h) pulling the lever locks the rear wheels. Above 6 mph (10 km/h) pulling the lever provides dynamic emergency braking without locking the rear wheels (regulatory deceleration of 1.5 m/s2).The assisted parking brake can only be released when the steering column is unlocked (forced + after ignition feed, see Introduction).

The assisted parking brake enables assisted application and release of the brake:

Application: When the engine is switched off, the parking brake is applied when the driver presses the start button.

Release: The brake is released when the torque necessary for vehicle movement is reached in the drive wheels (Note: for automatic transmissions, the driver's door must be closed).

Note: In this case, the instrument panel displays the message Lever in P or N and the buzzer on the instrument panel sounds.

Note: In this case, release is authorised for 5 seconds after the driver's door has been opened (e.g. for a manoeuvre). After 5 seconds release is prevented.

Note: Assisted braking and release only occurs if the computer has been configured. For details on how these configurations function, see Configuration and programming.

GENERAL OPERATING MODE FOR THE COMPUTER:

The assisted parking brake computer operates in two modes: STANDBY mode and SWITCH ON mode.

SWITCH ON mode:

Available functions:– Manual application and release, assisted application and release and emergency braking (steering column

unlocked).– Full system fault finding (all faults can be identified).

Switch on conditions (3 possibilities):– The UCH sends a switch on request to the parking brake computer via the multiplex network as the vehicle is

opened or the card is inserted in the reader.– Braking request via the parking brake control lever.– Battery voltage greater than 13.2 V, if the vehicle is Parked for less than 24 hours.

STANDBY mode:

Available functions:– 24-hour monitoring of the braking force and incline (to ensure parking brake application).– Only application is authorised (using the lever).– Restricted system fault finding (the computer can no longer identify all faults).– Release not authorised.

Conditions for setting to standby:– The UCH sends a standby request to the parking brake computer via the multiplex network after the ignition is

switched off and the vehicle locked (a few seconds later). The parking brake computer's STANDBY mode will be confirmed by the lever warning light going out (special note: the battery voltage must be below 13.2 V).

CABLE RESETTING:

The parking brake cable is locked after the control lever is released or after driving at over 1 mph (2 km/h) (switch on mode). When the assisted parking brake system locks, it makes a sound that lasts for a few seconds and ends with clicking (play compensation is automatic).

IMPORTANTBefore using the emergency control, it is important to put the vehicle into gear and wedge one wheel if necessary (on a slope).

WARNING LIGHT MANAGEMENT

Indications of a level 1 fault:– Check Parking Brake message on the instrument panel display.– orange indicator light (P in a triangle) on the instrument panel comes on.– Service warning light comes on.

Indications of a level 2 fault:– Parking brake fault message on the instrument panel display.– 1 second audible warning (from the instrument panel),– orange indicator light (P in a triangle) on the instrument panel comes on.– Service warning light comes on.– Red indicator light (brake pad light) on the instrument panel comes on.– parking brake control lever indicator light flashes.

Warning occurs:– when the door is opened and a gear is engaged on an automatic transmission,– when the vehicle is moving, despite the parking brake being applied,– when the door is opened, with the engine running and the parking brake released,– when the door is opened, with the engine stopped and the parking brake released,

Note:When the lever warning light stops flashing, the instrument panel message disappears. If the system has a level 2 fault, whenever the lever is used, the indicator light on the lever starts flashing again and the fault message reappears.

ASSISTED PARKING BRAKEFault finding - Replacement of components 37B

37B-14

FPA Vdiag No.: 0C, 04 and

08 Fault finding - Replacement of components

A/ PROCEDURE FOR REPLACING AN ASSISTED PARKING BRAKE COMPUTER

The description of the mechanical operations for replacing the control unit (computer), and the brake cables, (see 37B, Assisted parking brake).

The parking brake cables must always be replaced when the computer is replaced. In the same way, the computer must be replaced when the parking brake cables are changed. Conversely, the lever and the parking brake are independent of one another. The lever must be replaced outside after ignition feed and with the parking brake released, if not faults may arise. The clutch sensor must be replaced in + after ignition feed to avoid a fault being provoked.

BEFORE REPLACING THE PARKING BRAKE COMPUTER:

If the vehicle has a manual gearbox, recover the clutch data from the memory of the old computer so that it can be entered into the new computer (see section C).

Operations to perform before replacement:– Switch on the ignition, connect the diagnostic tool and establish dialogue with the computer (parking brake field).– before replacing the computer, check that it is actually causing the fault by reading the faults and apply the fault

finding procedure concerned.

Steps to follow after replacement:– with the ignition switched off, replace the assisted parking brake computer (with the approval of Techline).– switch on the ignition, connect the diagnostic tool and establish dialogue with the computer (parking brake field),– apply the procedure described in section B: NEW COMPUTER CALIBRATION AND INITIALISATION,– release the parking brake lever to reset the cables.– check parking brake operation by testing the braking, maximum braking, and release,– read the faults to clear any stored faults and check that replacing the computer has enabled the fault on the

vehicle to be rectified (no faults present).– read the configuration (repair mode menu) to check that the parking brake computer configuration has been

correctly configured.– depending on the configuration chosen, check the assisted braking and release.

Note:An assisted parking brake computer may be replaced only when requested by the Techline (fill out the fault finding log).

Note:With an automatic transmission, no data recovery is required (the computer can be replaced without applying sections C and D).

IMPORTANTDo not clear the faults from the computer before replacing it.

IMPORTANTIt is strictly prohibited to drive a vehicle with an assisted parking brake computer unless it is in customer mode.

B/ NEW COMPUTER INITIALISATION

1 / ENTERING THE VIN CODE– run command VP004 Enter VIN,– using the diagnostic tool keypad, enter the vehicle identification number.– confirm.

2. COMPUTER CALIBRATION AND INITIALISATION.

– In + after ignition feed, run command VP011 Computer calibration and initialisation and carry out the following 4 steps.

STEP 1 VEHICLE MASS CALIBRATION

Screen 1:With the drop-down menu, enter the following information:

– vehicle type,– engine type,– gearbox type,– type of driving style,– equipment level (for Vdiag 04),– confirm by pressing Next.

Screen 2:– reread the highlighted information.– If the highlighted information does not match the vehicle, return to the selection screen by pressing

the Back button.– if the highlighted information is correct, continue with step 2 by pressing Next.

STAGE 2 INITIALISING A NEW PARKING BRAKE– Initialise the brake by pressing YES (you should hear it engage and then disengage).– Proceed to Step 3 by pressing Next.

STEP 3 SLOPE INITIALISATION– Calibrate the slope sensor by pressing Confirm. Proceed to step 4 by pressing Next.

STEP 4 INITIALISING ASSISTED BRAKING– Initialise braking by pressing Confirm.– Return to the selection list screen by pressing Finish.

3 / COMPUTER CONFIGURATIONS– Carry out the configurations as requested by the customer (see Configuration and programming).

Note:If the VIN code is not entered, stage 2 of the computer initialising procedure will not work.

IMPORTANTTo initialise the computer, the vehicle must be on a horizontal surface with the brake cables correctly fitted (connected to the rear brake callipers) and nobody must be working on the vehicle.

C/ CLUTCH DATA BACKUP (for vehicles fitted with a manual gearbox)

Purpose of the procedure:

The data saved relates to the clutch engagement point. This is important when the clutch wears, because this data enables the assisted release of the parking brake when the clutch causes the vehicle to move off.

If this data cannot be recovered from the old computer (impossible to establish dialogue with the diagnostic tool) or a new clutch has been installed, the new computer has to be programmed with the clutch engagement point: drive the vehicle, downshifting at least 30 times (from 5th to 4th gear) before returning the vehicle to the customer.

If the clutch data is not recorded in the new computer, the operation of the assisted brake on steep slopes will be impaired when first used.

Perform the following operations:

– establish dialogue with the computer,– select the repair mode menu on the diagnostic tool.– open the programming menu,– run function SC005 Backup clutch pedal programming (the data is written to a file that is automatically selected

when the new computer is programmed).– replace the assisted parking brake computer (see 37B, Assisted parking brake),– follow the procedures described in sections A and B.

D/ ENTER CLUTCH DATA (for vehicles with automatic transmissions)

The initialising must be performed (sections A and B).Perform the following operations:

– establish dialogue with the computer,– select the repair mode menu on the diagnostic tool.– open the programming menu,– run function: SC006 Enter clutch pedal programming.– check that the assisted parking brake is operating correctly, including the assisted release function.

IMPORTANTDo not apply this procedure in the event of a clutch fault.

Note:– If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, command SC005 Backup clutch pedal programming is

unavailable.– Command SC006 Enter clutch pedal programming, is also unavailable if command SC005 has not already

been activated.

CONFIGURATIONS:

Two functions can be turned off by configuration: assisted application and release.

Special note:Assisted application and release are configured by default when a new computer is initialised. This configuration is accessible in the log book.

For configuration, select the diagnostic tool's Repair mode menu.

CF007 Vehicle configuration

This configuration turns assisted parking brake application on or off when the engine is stopped. In cold countries or regions, assisted braking should preferably be inhibited to avoid brake cables becoming frozen in the applied position.

– Select the type of configuration:– NORMAL (with assisted braking when the engine is stopped).– COLD CLIMATE (without assisted braking when the engine is stopped).

– Confirm the operation.– Make sure the configuration has been properly entered by reading configuration LC009 Vehicle configuration.– Make sure the assisted braking function works.

PROGRAMMING:– Refer to the configuration check.

Note:When a new computer is installed, the slope sensor is calibrated by running command VP011 Computer calibration and initialisation.

If the fault is still present, disconnect the connectors to ensure that the UCH connectors are in good condition as well as their clips (terminals), in particular the clips for the multiplex tracks (refer to the wiring diagram for the UCH fitted to the vehicle).Replace the clips if necessary.

If the fault is still present, contact the Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

If the computer has been replaced (at the request of the Techline), initialise the assisted parking brake computer (see Replacement of components).Issue several braking and release commands to confirm the repair.Deal with any other faults.

1.DEF NOTES

Special notes: The specification of 1.DEF corresponds to an inconsistency between the measured force value (PR004) and the status of the parking brake (ET030: Operation of the assisted parking brake during a fault in the fault context). This fault can appear after disconnecting the battery (parking brake applied).

Check the context of the fault when the fault appears:

If ET030 is STATUS 5, STATUS 6, STATUS 7, STATUS 8, STATUS 9 or STATUS 10 and if PR004 is greater than 450 N and if PR012 Vehicle speed is 0 mph (km/h) when the fault appears:

– check to see if the battery has been disconnected, if it has, the appearance of this fault is normal, clear the fault,

– if not, check the computer supply voltage and the battery.Repair if necessary. If the fault is still present, contact the Techline.

If ET030 is STATUS 5, STATUS 6, STATUS 7 and if PR004 is less than 450 N and if PR012 Vehicle speed is less than 3 mph (5 km/h) when the fault appears:Check for traces of heating on the brakes:

– Check that the pads have returned correctly to the rest position– Check that the small lever has sufficient return force.– Check that there is no friction or points of resistance on the cables.– If there is no indication of any defective operation of these components and if PR019 < 3 and PR022 > 25 and

2.DEF NOTES

Special notes:The specification 2.DEF mainly comes from a fault with the electrical power supply, braking application travel or the internal force sensor.

If this fault appears after the parking brake has been replaced:– Check the conformity of the parking brake fitting.– Check that the battery voltage PR001 is above 12.5 V.– Clear the fault and restart the procedure for fitting the parking brake: see Replacement of components.

Check the fault context when the fault appears: if the battery voltage PR001 is below 9 V when the fault appears, then:

– Check the power supply line and that the resistance is less than 150 mΩ.– If there is no indication of a fault on the power supply line and if PR019 < 3 and PR022 > 25 and PR018 < 15,

then clear the fault.

Check the fault context when the fault appears: If ET028: Brake switch signal is PRESSED, then:– If PR019 < 3 and PR022 > 25 and PR018 < 15, then clear the fault.– The fault can arise when the user presses hard on the brake pedal, when the parking brake is being applied.

If this is the case, clear the fault.

If there is a loud noise when applying, when maximum braking is requested, then the cause may be mechanical: refer to the mechanical MR.

Check that the parking brake mechanical tensioning line is correct:– Parking brake cables correctly fitted.– Good condition of the parking brake cables (no seizing or deterioration).– Conformity, condition and proper functioning of the rear brake callipers.– Condition and conformity of the rear brake pads.– Conformity of rear brakes bleeding.

Carry out the necessary repairs.

Using the diagnostic tool (PARKING sub-function), display the parameters PR005 Force setpoint and PR004 Measured force value. These must have the various values recorded in the conformity check.

If the fault is still present, contact the Techline.

NOTES

Special notes:This fault indicates a process malfunction: the replacement or reconfiguration of the assisted parking brake computer was carried out with a fault present.

Conditions for applying fault finding procedures to stored faults:Deal with the fault as if it were present.

Using the diagnostic tool, run fault finding on the assisted parking brake computer.Deal with other present or stored faults first.Carry out any necessary repairs. Clear the fault.

If no fault is displayed on the diagnostic tool, carry out a conformity check to check the conformity of the parking brake system.

If the conformity check and fault finding with the diagnostic tool have not enabled the fault to be solved, (see the Introduction) for fault warning light management, to find out which components may be causing the malfunction.

If the fault is still present, contact the Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

If the computer has been replaced (at the request of the Techline), initialise the assisted parking brake computer (see Replacement of components).Issue several braking and release commands to confirm the repair.Deal with any other faults.
