EditorialDear Friends,Bonjour, Namaste, Kem Chho?

First of all, I would like to congratulate all our Alliance Française and other students from various schools and institutes who completed their DELF exams last month. I extend my congratulations to our dedicated teachers without whom nothing could be possible; they are truly the heart of our institution. Our new premises welcomed all the candidates from all over Gujarat for this session of the DELF exam, a diploma directly issued by the French Ministry of Education and recognised worldwide.

In today’s global and mobile world, foreign language competence has become one of the key competences for

individuals wanting to lead successful professional and private lives. How can one travel, do business, read fiction or non-

fiction, compare political perspectives on specific national and world issues, or evaluate research results if one is monolingual?

How can one appreciate one’s own language and culture without knowing any other to make a comparison? To become

proficient in a foreign language takes time and resources; a generally accepted and verified “recipe” to master a language

has yet to be discovered. We, at the Alliance Française

d’Ahmedabad, are continuously working to offer you these resources. Also, our well-trained teachers are aware that students learn best where the focus is on the content and not on the language itself. This is our active pedagogy.

It has been now 2 months that we are functional at our new premises and everybody is appropriating this new space quite well. Our students and friends are spending more and more time with us, transforming our center more as a “happening place” than a place where you “just” come to learn French. Some students then decided to create their own club to organize more and more events by and for our members and students. The Alliance Française is definitely becoming a Rendez-Vous place. Talking about Rendez-Vous, did you visit our new outdoor space at the ground floor? Your taste buds will be happy to discover it!

On the cultural side, we have decided to focus on people who are making a difference, each of them in their own

way, through changing mind-sets, practical guidance and/or mentorship. Aditi Gupta and her friends from

Menstrupdia will tell us how they change misperceptions; Sekhar Mukherjee will continue to take over our new

building; Shamiana will make us discover new stories in a short time; and Chintan Pandya will pursue the Fanatika

Theatre Club adventures.

The course will start onMonday 08 July 2013 | Every Monday and Thursday.Timings: 10:15 am to 11:45 am | Level required: Level B1

Welcome back to you all, grammar lovers! This session, we’ll focus on your argumentative skills. Orally, you’ll enact contrary situations, debate and play « l’avocat du diable ». In writing, you’ll particularly work on your » articulations » (which means that a lot of time will be dedicated to the dreaded « subordination », but also on other « connecteurs »). You’ll also write summaries. In comprehension, you’ll identify the main ideas of a text, the different « registres de langues », colour them and play with them, refining your analytical and expressive skills.

All of this with the help of a wide variety of documents: TV program excerpts, advertisements, classic texts, poetry, movie scenes, songs… Don’t miss on it; the number of seats is limited!

Do you feel like watching what the French watch, read what they read, laugh with tem , sing with them and even speak with them ? Then this course is for you . With the help of a variety of documents (such as advertisements, songs , movie snippets , stand-up acts, TV program excerpts, classic texts, poetry) we’ll center our session around two new themes : «l’exotisme » et « l’épouvante » ( exotism and horror ) . We have some exciting times ahead of us !

This course will be particularly beneficial to the students who prepare for the C1 level as the comparison of documents around a theme will lead us towards the format of synthesis and as the students will get their first acquaintance with French essays or commentaries. But all those who just want to enjoy themselves are welcome!

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” Groucho Marx

The multimedia side of the new mediathèque at the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad..

Anushree Shukla ( 10 ans) (Niveau A2- enfants)The library is very good. It has many CDs and books are also good and we can watch the French television channel too.

Mohal Rajguru (11 ans) (Niveau A2- enfants) The library is exactly the way I like. It has some English and many French books and CDs. We can also watch TV with headphones here.

Naqui Shaikh (12 ans) (Niveau A2- enfants)The library is actually very attractive. Infact, it was very surprising for me to find that this is a library. It also has a television wth individual headphones with great quality sound.

Mauli Modi (Stagiaire)Tha facility of TV in the library with channel TV5 helps me to improve mu knowledge of French culture and it updates me with current affairs of France. Watching TV with good quality headphones helps me get clarity to my comprehension. Films always play a huge role to bring us close to reality.

Naresh Jain (Niveau B1)I am very much impressed & satisified with the seating arrangement. This is much better than the previous arrangement. While watching TV5 Monde, I really improved my listening abilities which is an important aspect while learning French. Thank you very much to Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad for providing us such a nice environment.

Rutwik Khalanekar (Niveau B1)The movie on demand facility at the new bibliothèque is pretty cool. It was great to sit and watch a French comedy with friends – a private screening exclusive for us- complete with individual headsets and comfortable couch. Great experience sans a bucket of popcorn.

Prabhakar Singh (Niveau B1)The movie watching experience in the library is extra ordinary. Especially with the individual headphones I enjoy the movie to the core. Moreover, TV5 Monde chanel is very interesting and helps me to improve the language tremendously.

Founders of Menstrupedia

We are a husband-wife duo, designers, engineers, and more importantly dreamers with a strong urge to bring about good changes. We dream of a future where menstruation is not a dreadful condition or a taboo but rather a welcome transition into womanhood for young girls.

We want menstruation to get rid of its taboo status and this is possible only through proper and widespread awareness about menstruation among people. One aspect of spreading awareness about menstruation is to create good and effective communication channels to provide information and that’s what we are working on at Menstrupedia.

How we started Menstrupedia : At NID, when we got into a relationship with, Tuhin came to know more about the pain and inconvenience that girls and women go through every month during their periods and how they are often treated impure because of it. It wouldn’t be very hard to imagine what a young girl goes through in the absence of a proper source of information on the subject and on top of that being branded impure by her own family. Aditi had herself experienced and dealt with menstruation related problems in her life and had always felt a need for trustworthy and easily accessible information on this subject. This might be a situation not just in India but in many other countries as well. And we saw a lot of design scope to take up this gap of information as communication designers.

What started out as a thesis project at NID

has now become Menstrupedia. Aditi had taken up a yearlong project to study the level of awareness about menstruation in young girls. Though it was Aditi’s project, Tuhin was closely involved in it from the beginning as it is not just a problem of women health and hygiene but also a communication design problem. At the end of the project we found a need for an appropriate guide about menstruation for young girls. So we created a prototype where we explained menstruation through comic medium using characters and stories and tested it with young girls. We received a very positive response. So, one inspiration was this that what we are doing at Menstrupedia has a thorough yearlong research to back it.

A comic was developed to test the medium. We tool in to schools in Mehsana, Gndhinagr , Ahmedbad and Ranchi. We received a very positive response from girls, parents as well as teachers.

After working 3 years in e-learning industry and having saved some money as an initial investment, we quite our jobs and started working full time on Menstupedia from August 2013.

Rajat Mittal (3rd founding member) who is a graduate from DAIICT and a post Graduate in Computers from Arizona State University, Joined us in 2013.With his technical skills our team was pretty much complete

Art TalkTête-à-tête with Aditi Gupta and Tuhin Paul

Let’s know more about them in their own words

Page 15: Découvrir - AF Ahmedabadahmedabad.afindia.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/July-August-2013.… · While I am writing this editorial, ... Sujit Nair Simon Gardan ... Sekhar Mukherjee

The response to the prototype has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only did

the young girls whom we gave samples of the comic enjoyed it, educators and

parents found it very helpful too. Parents felt that using comic to educate about

menstruation is very effective in eliminating the feeling of shame associated with

this topic and creating a favourable environment for them to discuss this topic

with their daughters.

Menstrupedia aims at spreading awareness about menstruation and shatter myths around the subject. At menstrupedia we are devising various ways to help young girls and women stay informed about their body and managing their periods effectively.

We have been working in the field of menstrual awareness since 2010 and recently in past one year we have been working on making awareness about menstruation fun and easy through Menstrupedia the online fun guide to healthy periods.

We are making a comic book to explain girls about menstruation. Menstrupedia, the comic, will guide young girls about their changing bodies and especially about menstruation using stories adapted from real life situations. Beautifully illustrated characters enacting these situations will enlighten the young readers of the comic about staying prepared and the best ways to manage their periods in different situations.

The easy storytelling narrative of the comic will instill a positive attitude among its readers towards their bodies and menstruation, and free them from the age old menstrual myths. Once made, the comic will be translated into various languages too to enable more people to make use of the comic.

Way back in my school days, amongst mundane boring classes, I enjoyed quite a bit as a last bencher, observing the entire classroom activities and could not resist to fill it up sheepishly with crooked doodles in my class workbooks! Often that resulted in poor marks, punishments or call to parents! But alas, I could not live up to their expectation as I have an itch towards white spaces and pages. Seeing them I feel the urge to mess it up with the crazy scribbles pouring out my body and mind, a manifestation of this complex world we live with, it affects me…all the time. So I continue with my scrapbooks, which became part of me, a fantastic affordable device to store my secret ideas flowing out from the restless recording of moments in and around me. Moments with my friends, family, lovers, students, colleagues, children, animals, beasts, angels, demons, machines, morons, clowns, humans, warlords, megalomainacs, manic depressives, doctors, conductors and many more…my body and mind poured in as an aftermath in my sketchbooks!!!

I also discover the intoxicating beauty of relative truths through my sketchbooks, which comes in various shapes and sizes starting from school days notebook to official writing pads to scraps to standard sketchbooks to even the empty walls which came to me! This series of sketchbooks / scrapbooks / Doodles / scirbbles / murals / films / cartoons / comics /compositions / writings are nothing but my freedom song, my idea bank, my memoir, my open secret diary and my oxygen mask, to keep my hope for ‘ONE WORLD’ alive!

AGHAVIZI(The Inner Eye)Some reveries come true. As do some terrors. Some of those visions are actually camouflagic; misleading us to believe they’re something that they really are not. They have this strange and uncanny ability to blend in with the present. The conscious and the subconscious go hand in hand, successfully blurring the lines between the two. It’s up to you to decide when to wake up.

Fanatika Theatre Clubcelebrated its 3rd anniversary!

Here’s what our established actors have to say after their training at Fanatika:

Fanatika is very close to my heart

because I started my theater career with it. I always feel that I am part of the

new era in Gujarati contemporary theatre that started with Fanatika.

I feel that Fanatika is in itself a different movement that is happening in Gujarat as Fanatika also has room

for other than professional actors (students, teacher, lawyer, MNC employees, etc.) where they come, meet,

rehearse and explore the hidden possibilities in them by doing the different, and especially contemporary, plays which

is very new for the actors as well as for the audiences, but which is very important.

Fanatika is very special and unique because actors are not puppets here, they have their freedom to explore their creativity through different aspects of theater like stories/screenplay writing, light/sound design, costume design, property/stage management, etc. which certainly evolves their originality and broadens their understanding of theatre. And in Gujarat, I think Fanatika is the only place where international artist come, work and share their experience with the members to help them learn and improve their art. - Pratik Rathod

W i t h more than 100

members who are actively participating in activities related to

theatre, and motivating others too to join theatre, Fanatika has brought a remarkable positive change

in the development of theatre culture in Ahmedabad. Through its various activities such as “Dramatic

Performances“, “Vanchikam”, “International Festival of Documentaries on theatre” and “Screening

of International Films”, it not only provides an international exposure but has generated an intercultural dialogue in the city.

I have been enriched with professional training and experiences at Fanatika that is rare to find anywhere else in Ahmedabad. My

association with Fanatika is going to be a life-long association where I look forward

to many more new ventures.

I am a businessman turned actor

thanks to Fanatika. Had I not been exposed to theatre with my first play “Lady Lalkunwar” at Fanatika, I would have continued, of course unwillingly, to look after our family business. It is Fanatika that gave me the courage to accept and follow my real passion – acting!

Since my training at Fanatika, I have been working as a freelance actor and have acted in many plays

[Lady Lalkunwar (Sitanshu Yashaschandra), Dakhla Tarike (Chintan Pandya), and Kasturba (Narayan Desai) to

name a few], Bollywood films such as D-Day (Nikhil Advani), Two States (Abhishek Varman) and a Gujarati blockbuster

Kevi Rite Jaish (Abhishek Jain). Be it theatre, films, TV series or commercials, my training and formation at Fanatika on stage presence,

voice modulation and projection, dialecte and diction, gestures and movements on stage as well as technicalities and importance of light, sound and music in theatre has always been of great help to performe with ease and confidence.

The AF Magazine is an e-magazine which regularly publishes articles in French and English to keep you updated about all what’s happening in connection with France in India.

The entire network of Alliances Françaises in India contributes to this magazine; discover an article from the Alliance Française de Pune this time on

Foreign Policy’s list of “500 Most Powerful People on the Planet” has just been announced. Featuring among these 500 influential people is a distinguished Indian, Dr. Unni Karunakara, International President of Médecins Sans Frontières – MSF (Doctors Without Borders). An interview with this prominent yet simple personality.

You are on the list of the “500 Most Powerful People on the Planet”. What does this list mean to you, and moreover, to MSF? Can we talk of this as a recognition of your work and a legitimacy for MSF?

Appearing on the list was something of a surprise. In delivering humanitarian assistance, MSF often finds itself at odds with those who hold real power – governments, armed groups, or corporate interests like pharmaceutical companies. But we certainly aim to influence those in power to strengthen our ability to reach people in need and to deliver these people with good quality healthcare.

Being on the list can be seen as a recognition of the need for humanitarian medical action and the work we do. Any power or influence we may have comes from the hard work and dedication of 35,000 humanitarians from over 100 countries working to alleviate suffering in 70 countries. And, we benefit from the support of more than 4.5 million donors.

Getting candid with MSF

Connect to AF Magazine and find more articles from allover India.

You will be able to discover a retrospective of the World Environment Day events organised

by the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad.

As of today, in which part of the world is MSF the most active ?

Today, MSF is the most active in the continent of Africa, where two-thirds of our programme funds are spent. In 2011, many of our largest programmes were in the Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by Haiti, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Even if MSF is an International Organization, pursuing goals on a worldwide scale, is it manageable for you, as President of this International Organization, to put forward local issues, like the ones happening in your country, India ?

MSF is an associative movement. Doctors, nurses, logisticians, and others who work for MSF, or have in the past, can choose to be a member of an MSF association. We currently have 23 associations across the world, which serve as the engine for debate within the movement. Each association sets broad directions for its executive. It holds them accountable and safeguards the identity of the movement. Local associative chapters can make their own decisions, but for movement-wide decisions at the international level, the associations discuss issues before bringing them to the International General Assembly for vote and endorsement. The International General Assembly is the highest associative body, and as International President, I chair the International General Assembly. If the MSF movement believes a local issue is important for all of us, I will be asked to address it.

The tenure of the president of MSF is a three-year mandate, renewable once. Are you planning to run for re-election for this position ?

No, I will not be seeking another term. I will be returning to India for a while after being away for more than 20 years. It has been an honour and a privilege for me to have served as International President for the last three years.

CampusFrance Ahmedabad would like to invite you for Pre-departure session on 12 July 2013 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the French Gallary, Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad.

While in school Students from the member countries of the European Economic Space (plus Switzerland) may work freely and without restriction while studying in France. As long as they do not neglect their academic work, they may combine employment with scholarships or other financial assistance. Since July 1, 2007, French law has allowed other international students to work under the following conditions: A residency permit (VLS-TS, validated by OFII, or a residency permit in addition to a visa) marked “student” entitles the student to accept paid employment for up to 60% of the legally defined work year (or 964 hours per year), without prior administrative authorization.

Note: The time that students spend in internships connected with their academic program (and covered by a written internship agreement) are not counted toward the maximum allowable working hours, even if the student is compensated during the internship. The minimum gross hourly wage, set by law, is €9.19. Withholding reduces the worker’s net wage by about 20%. Working at a public institution of higher education International students are eligible for student jobs at universities and other public institutions of higher education. Students are hired to provide the following services: assisting incoming students; helping disabled students; providing tutoring; providing IT support and assistance; coordinating and staffing cultural, athletic, and social events; working in the career center; and supporting their institution’s promotional efforts. Student employment contracts are offered for a period not to exceed 12 months. They run from September 1 through August 31. Students may work up to 670 hours between September 1 and June 30, and up to 300 hours between July 1 and August 31.After graduation, International students holding a degree equivalent to a master or above International students who have earned a degree that is equivalent to a European master or above may seek authorization to reside in France for up to 6 months after the expiration of their student residency permit. This authorization, which is not renewable, allows the graduate to work for up to 60% of the legal work week. If the employment contract is related to the subject of the graduate’s degree program and if it provides compensation that is equal to or greater than 150% of the minimum wage, the prospective employee may apply to the local prefecture for change of status from student to employee. Once authorization is granted (it is not granted automatically), the individual may begin working full time. Other students accepting an offer of employment from a French firm after graduation implies a change in status (from student to employee). Graduates apply for the change by submitting their employment contract or offer of employment.

French law permits international students to work.

Working in Francewhile your study!!!!

14 July

BASTILLE DAY

The Bastille was a medieval fortress and prison, for political prisoners, in Paris. Many people in France associated it with the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy in the late 1700s.

On July 14, 1789, troops stormed the Bastille. This was one of the events at the beginning of the French Revolution.

On July 14, 1790 “Fête de la Fédération” was held. This was a way to celebrate the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in France.

July 14, often called “Fête Nationale” in France, became an official holiday in 1880.

Nowadays, many people attend large-scale public celebration as the Military parades, musical performances, communal meals, dances and of course, the very famous firework!

Bastille Day, in France, is a holiday marking the anniversary of the fall of the Bastille in Paris on July 14, 1789.

The students of Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad are preparing some surprises for this occasion.

FRENCH NATIONAL DAY

Do you know

the Alliance Team?

The Receptionists,

There are young, there nice, there are beautiful..... please welcome the Receptionists!!

Since we are in our new premises, things grow up. To welcome you, from now, there is not one, not two, but THREE receptionists! The team is composed by Aanal, Francis and Rutwik. Both of them join the Alliance Team in 2013 for our great pleasure!

Now, let them talk about their job!

Aanal: At the beginning, you think that it is an easy job, but it’s not!! It’s few challenging, we enjoy! I mean, challenging in a good way!And for me, work and study at the Alliance Française is a real chance. While I’m working, I can improve my French!

Francis: We have a lot of work, but it is very good because we have a lot of connexion with different department of the Alliance Française. Our mission are also various, we have to manage the membership, inform the student.. In term of knowledge it is very rich (management, customer relationship…) and all those things expose us out of our comfort zone and it is there, where we learn the most!

Rutwik: When I started to work at the reception, I was afraid that it would be a little boring.. . But I had a very nice surprise discovering that this work is all the contrary of boring! My job is exhausting but I can do it!!

All of them seem really happy about their job. There are all very different (one is from Gujarat, an other from Karnataka and the last one is from Maharashtra!) but really compatible; “We all find our own satisfaction source in our job, and that is really nice for us!” says Aanal. And about the new premises, they all agree to say that this new building is, for the receptionist, in term of work’s spaces better and much more convenient!

So now, don’t hesitate one more second before coming at the Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad and meet our super receptionnists!
