Decking System Overview
1.1 How To Use This Manual
Thepurposeofthismanualistoserveasa“howto”guideforusingHiltideckfasteningsystems.Itisintendedprimarilyforsteeldeckinstallers,butmayalsoserveasareferenceguideforengineers,purchasingagents,generalcontractors,inspectorsandowners.
Themanualbeginswithanoverviewofdeckingapplications,andthenguidesyouthroughhowtoselectandusethetoolsandfastenerstypicallyappropriateforvariousapplications.Theguidethenfocusesonhowtouseandmaintainthesetools,howtomakeandinspectaproperfasteningandconcludeswithadiscussionofhowtotroubleshootandmakecommonfieldrepairs.
Afterreadingthismanual,installersshouldhaveasolidunderstandinghowtouseHiltideckfasteningsystems,andshouldbereadytotaketheHiltideckfasteningtraineroroperatortest.

1.2 Mechanical Fastening Concepts
1.2.1 General Terminology
Direct fastening:Afasteningmethodinwhichthefasteningsaremadewithoutanypreparationstepssuchasdrillingahole.Examplesarepowder-actuatedfastening,self-drillingscrewsandwelding.
Powder-actuated fastener:Anail-likefastenerdrivenintosteel,concreteormasonrywiththeuseofapowder-actuatedtool,suitableforholdingdownthefastenedmaterial.
Fastened material:Thematerialwhichmustbeattachedtothebasematerial(e.g.steeldeck).
Base material:Thebaseintowhichthefastenerisdriven(e.g.structuralsteelorbarjoist).
Fastening:Thecombinationoffastener,fastenedmaterialandbasematerial(afterthefastenerhasbeendriven).
Powder-actuated tool:Atoolthatutilizesexpandinggasesfromapowderloadtodriveafastener.
Powder-actuated, indirect-acting tool:Apowder-actuatedtoolinwhichtheexpandinggasofthepowderloadactsonacaptivepiston,whichinturndrivesthefastener.Theaveragetestvelocityusingthelightestfastenerandstrongestpowderloadmustnotexceed100m/s(328fps),tomeetthe"lowvelocity"toolclassperANSIA10.3-2013.AllHiltipowder-actuatedtoolsusedintheconstructionindustryareclassifiedaslowvelocity.

Thesemechanismshavebeenidentifiedandstudiedbyanalyzingpullouttestdataandbymicroscopicexaminationoffasteningcross-sections.
ClampingAsafastenerisdriven,thebasesteelisdisplacedradiallyandtowardsboththeentryandoppositesurfaces.Thisresultsinresidualpressureonthesurfaceofthenail,whichleadstofrictionorclamping.Clampingistheprimaryanchoringmechanismforthrough-penetratingfasteners.
KeyingThekeyingmechanismispossiblewhenthefastenershankisknurled.Aknurledfastenerhasgroovesalongtheshankinwhichzincandparticlesofbasesteelaccumulateduringthedrivingprocess.Forfastenersthatdonotthrough-penetrate,keyingisanespeciallyimportantanchoringmechanism.
Fusion (welding)Completefusionofthefastenerwiththebasesteelisindicatedbyportionsofbasesteelclingingtoanextractedtestfastener.Fusingorweldingisobservedmostlyatthepointofthefastenerwherethetemperatureduringdrivingisthehighest.
Brazing or SolderingThisreferstoazincelectro-platedlayeronthefastener,whichduringfasteningbecomesbrazedorsolderedtothebasesteel.

Thefasteningpatterndeterminesthenumberandspacing(positioning)ofthefastenerswhenattachingadeckingpaneltoasteelmember.Designloadcalculationsdictatethefasteningpatternbasedonthetypeofdeckandfasteningmethodspecifiedfortheparticularproject.Thespecifiedpatternisidentifiedfirstbythesheetwidthandthenbythenumberoffastenersrequiredforeachsteelmemberspanthatcrossesthedeckingpanel.Theimagebelowidentifiestypicalfastenerpatternsforthecommonroofdecks.Itisimportanttounderstandthisnomenclature.
Whenusinginterlockingdeckingpanels,thesheettypicallyisfastenedtothesteelmemberonbothsidesoftheconnectingsidelap.Withnestabledeckingpanels,onlyonefasteningisnormallyrequiredatthesidelap.Thismeansinterlockingdeckingpanelscanrequireupto15%morefastenings.

SelectionoftheproperHiltideckfastenerdependsonthesupportingbasesteelthickness.TheHiltiDeckFastenerSelectionGaugeshowninFigure1shouldbeusedbythedeckinginstallertoconfirmfastenerselection.Thecut-outslotonthegaugeisfitagainstthebarjoisttopchordorsteelbeamflange.Astheinternalcardslidesinthegauge,thetypicalHiltideckfastenerishighlightedwithagreenbox.AredboxindicatesthatthecorrespondingHiltideckfastenerisoutsidethebasematerialapplicationlimitsandshouldnotbeusedforsteeldeckfasteningtothebasematerialbeinggauged.Notethatbecauseofwidevariationsinbasematerialhardness,on-sitetestinstallationisalwaysrecommended.Ifanydifficultyisencountered,contactyourHiltirepresentative.
Steeldeckinstallersmustlayoutdeckproperlyandmark framefasteninglinesinordertoensurethatsteeldeck panelsareconnectedtothesupportingsteelframe.Markingframefasteninglinesisessentialwhenattachingsteeldeck tothinbasesteels(tII<1/4"),includingopenwebsteeljoists. Forallapplications,thefastenersshouldbeinstalledatleast3/8"(10mm)fromtheedgeortoeofthejoisttopchordorsteelbeamflange.Additionally,wheninstallingintoabarjoisttopchord(angle),thefastenersneedtobeinstalledatadistancefromtheangle,bx≤8xtIIandnotintotheverticalportionoftheangle. Extracaremustbetakenattheendlapandcornerlapconditionswheremultiplelayersofsteeldecknestorinterlockonadjacentpanels.Itisparticularlyimportantthatendlapandcornerlapconditionsoftwoandfourdecklayersbesnugandtightagainstoneanotherandthesupportingsteelframe,priortoinstallationofthefastener,inorderforthefasteningtobemadeasshowninFigure3.Tightendlapandcornerlaprequirementsareindependentofthefasteningtypeandcontributedirectlytotheperformanceofarcspotwelds,screws,powder-actuatedfasteners,punchesandcrimps/clinches.Ifthesteeldeckendlapsandcornerlapsaren’ttight,aproperfasteningcan’tbemade.
Forprojectswherethebasesteelispredominantlybarjoists,theX-HSN24isthefastenertypicallychosen.
Ifhot-rolledbeamsarepredominant,thentheX-ENP-19L15shouldtypicallybechosen.

Wheninstallingpowder-actuateddeckfastenersitisimportantforthedecktobeclampedtightlytothebasematerial,andtheinstalledfastenerstohaveanailheadstand-off,hNVS,withinthespecifiedrange.TheHiltiPowerAdjustmentGuide,showninFigure1,isavaluableaidtothedeckingforeman.Itisprimarilyintendedforpoweradjustmentofthepowder-actuatedtool.Thisisdonebyinstallingtestfasteningsintorepresentativedeck/basesteelandthencheckingthenailheadstand-off,hNVS,atthebeginningoftheworktoachievetheoptimalcartridgeandtoolpowerlevel.Thisisacriticalstepintheworkbecauseofvariationsinthestructuralsteelstrengths(Fy,Fu)andmemberthicknesses.Byinvestingthistimeupfrontandproperlycorrelatingthefasteningsystemtoactualsitematerials,mostfasteningissuescanbeavoided.Duringinstallation,itisalsoadvisabletochecktheworkperiodicallytospotdeficienciesbeforelargeportionsofthedeckmightbefastenedincorrectly,especiallyifthereisvariabilityinbasematerialstrength.Failuretoproperlysetthetool,fastenerandcartridgepriortostartingworkcandecreasefasteningqualityconsistency.
Priortostartingwork,atestfasteningshouldbeinstalledandthehNVSchecked,usingtheHiltiPowerAdjustmentGuide.Ifnecessary,theinstallermustadjustthepowerorforceofthepowder-actuatedsystem.Therearetwowaystoaccomplishthispoweradjustment.Oneisbyuseofdifferentcartridgecolorsandtheotherisbyadjustingthepowerregulatoronthetoolitself.
CartridgecolorsavailableforHiltiDeckingToolsare(inorderofincreasingpower):yellow,blue,redandblack.AllHiltideckingtoolscomeequippedwithpoweradjustmentcapability.Thesettingsonthepowerregulationdialsrangefrom"1"beingthelowestpowersettingand"4"beingthehighest.

3.1 Fastening Basics
3.1.1 Loading/Unloading the DX 860-HSN and ENP-L Tools
ThefollowingsectionshowshowtoproperlyloadandunloadtheDX860tools.AstheprocessesofloadingandunloadingtheDX860-HSNandENP-Ltoolsarenearlyidentical,wewilldiscussthemsimultaneously.Beforeusinganytool,alwaysreadandcomplywiththetoolinstructionmanual,andobtainoperatortrainingonthespecifictoolbeingused,asrequiredbyOSHAregulations.
FastenersfortheDX860deckingtoolsareloadedintothemagazineofthetoolasshownbelow.TheHSNtooltakesupto60fasteners,orsixstripsof10collatedHSNfasteners.Itisimportantthatthetoolbefullyloadedwith60fastenerswhenthecartridgesareloaded.Althoughthecartridgestripscontainonly40cartridges,itisimportanttoloadall60fastenersintothemagazine,asthetoolisgravityfed,andthiswillallowthefastenerstoproperlyfeedintothemagazine.
TheDX860-ENP-Ltool,however,isprimarilymechanicallyfed.Assuch,thetoolholdsthesamequantityoffastenersandlongcartridges(40each).ItisimportanttouseonlytheflexibleMXRcollatedstripsofENPfastenersandthecollatedstripsof40longHilticartridges.Oncethefastenersareinplace,thecartridgesareloadedbyinsertingcollatedstripsof40longcartridgesintothecartridgemagazine.Itisimportanttofullyinsertthestripsuntiltheyareflushwiththetopofthecartridgemagazine.

3.1.4 Marking the Deck
Oncethedeckpanelsaresetinplace,itbecomesdifficulttoidentifythelocationofthebeamorjoist.Ifnotaligned,thebeamorjoistcanbemissedandthetoolpistonmaydrivethefastenerthroughthedeckpanel.
Itisimportanttoaligneachdeckingsheetasitisplacedacrosstheframeandmarkthelocationofthebeamsorjoistswithabold,permanentmarkerorbysnappingachalkline.Thisallowsfasteningtobeaccomplishedmuchmorequicklyandwithfewerbeam/joistmisses.TheDX860-HSNtoolfeaturesapistonbrake,whichinmostcasespreventsthepistonfrompunchingthroughthedeck.TheDX860-ENP-L,DX460-SMandtheDX76-MXdonotfeaturethistechnology,andmaypunchthroughthedeckifthebeamismissed.
Missingthejoistorbeamcausesprematurebreakageofpistons,brakesandstoprings.ItisestimatedthatthestopringoftheDX76willbreakafteranaverageof30to40misses,whiletheconicalbrakeontheDX860-HSNwilltypicallylastforuptoseveralhundredmisses.Itispossible,however,thatmissingthejoistorbeammaycausethepistonandstopbrakeoftheDX860-HSNtojam.Forjammingsolutions,pleaserefertothetroubleshootingportionoftheguide.Thebufferonthe DX460-SMmayrequirechangingafter5to10misses.
3.1.5 Making a Fastening
MakingafasteningwithHiltideckingtoolsissimple.Afterloadingfastenersandcartridgesintothetool,fullydepressthebaseplateofthetoolagainstthedeck,holdingthetoolperpendiculartotheworksurfaceandpullthetrigger.Fasteningwiththetoolsatananglecanresultinimproperfasteningswithreducedcapacityandcouldcausethefastenertofreeflight.Priortomakingafastening,theoperatormustensurethatthedeckispressedfirmlyagainstthebasematerialtoeliminateanyopenspacebetweenthetwo.Specialcaremustbeusedwhenfasteningmultiplelayersofdecktoensureproperfastening,asopenspacesbetweendecklayerswilldecreasethequalityofthefastening.Theoperatormustbeawareofthegaugeofthedeckandthethicknessofthebasematerialtoensurethatthefastenersarewithintheproperparametersofuse.

Therearethreemaincharacteristicsofproperfasteningsthatmustbeconsidered:
1. Fasteners installed in proper locations. Fastenersmustbeinstalledinthepropersteeldeckvalleysorflutesinaccordancewiththestructuralroofdeckplansanddesignandintheproperlocationinthebasesteel.Thisisparticularlyimportantonthinbasesteel,whichcanbecomedeformedifthefastenerisplacedtooclosetotheedge.Thefastenerpointmustpenetrateinto,butnotnecessarilythrough,thesupportingsteel(topchordorflange),dependingonthefastener/deck/basesteelconfiguration.
2. Clamping of fastened part to base material. Fastenersmustclampthesteeldeckdowntothebasesteel(topchordorflange).Thereshouldnotbeanyvisiblegapsbetweenthesteeldeckandthebasesteelorbetweenthesteeldecklaps.
3. Washer placement and condition. Ingeneral,thefastenerwasheredgesmustclampthesteeldecksheettothebasesteel.Thewashersshouldnotcurlupwardsawayfromthedecksurfaceandmustnotdigorcutintothesteeldecksurface.FortheX-HSN24fastener,thetophatwashermustbecompressed.FortheX-ENP-19fastener,thepistonmark(indentation)shouldbeclearlyvisibleonthefastenerwasherasshowninFigure2.
Whentheinspectorisunclearaboutthecompressionofthetophatwasherorthepistonmark,theHiltiPowerAdjustmentGuidemaybeusedtomeasureforoptimalpowder-actuatefastenernailheadstand-off,NVS.Notethatmeasuringnailheadstand-offdoesnotverifyproperfastenerembedmentunlessthesteeldeckandbasematerialaretightlyclamped,withthebasesteelnotdeformedorbent.Conversely,measuringnailheadstand-offdoesnotconfirmanimproperfastening.Ifslightlyoutsidetherange,furtherinvestigationintothethreecharacteristicsofproperfasteningsgivenaboveshouldbecompleted. ThefollowingFigures3and4providevisualexamplesofproperandimpropersteeldeckfasteningsforHiltibarjoist(X-HSN24)andstructuralsteel(X-ENP-19L15)fasteners,respectively. Inspectionoftheinstalledsteeldeckandinstallationofroofcoverings,insulationandmembraneshouldbedonesoonaftersteeldeckinstallationtoassistinalleviatingcorrosionorotherissuesthatcouldariseduetolong-termexposure.Fastenersmustbecompletelyprotectedfromtheweatherwithin180daysafterinstallation.
3.2 Inspecting Fastenings to Ensure Quality
Steeldeckconstructionprojectsmaypresentachallengewithrespecttothequalitycontrolofconnectionsbetweensheetsteelandthesupportingsteelstructure.Qualitycontrolmeasuresforweldingtypicallyconsistsofvisualchecksanddimensionalorsizeverifications,whichmayormaynotconfirmaproperfastening.Fieldverificationoftheadequacyofpowder-actuatedmechanicalsteeldeckfastenerscanbeconductedasdescribedinthissection.

Thiscouldalsobecausedbynothavingenoughfastenersinthefastenermagazine.TheDX860-HSNisagravityfedtool.Fillfastenermagazinewithfastenersandattemptanotherfastening.Ifthisdoesnotwork,makesurethe"window"onthefrontofthetoolisclosed.Ifitisopen,closethewindowandattemptanotherfastening.
Thismayalsobeduetoajammedfastener.Ensurethatthenoseofthebaseplateassemblyisfreeofjammedfasteners.Fastenerstendtojamthetoolmostoftenwhentheoperatormissesthebasematerialandcontinuestoattempttofirethetool.Inthiscase,asthefastenerdoesnotattachtothebasematerial,itmayremainlodgedinthebaseplate.Repeatedmisseswillexacerbatethisproblem.Iffastenersdobecomelodgedinthenoseofthebaseplate,unloadthetool,removethebaseplate,actuatethepivotplatesoastoclearthepindetectoroutoftheway,andforcethejammedfastenersoutofthebaseplatewiththepistonofthetool.

Step 1–Installthehandles.Loosentheouterbutterflyclamps.Slidethehandlesintotheframe.Ifthetoolisnew,thismayrequiresomewigglingofthehandles.
Step 2-Adjusttheheightofthehandles.Thehandlescanberaisedorloweredaccordingtotheheightoftheoperator.Itisrecommendedthatoperatorssettheheightofthehandlessotheoperator’sarmsmeetthehandlesatalmostfullextension.Thisallowstheoperatortousetheirbodyweighttohelpdrivefasteners.Thismethodhelpsreducearmfatigueandincreaseproductivity.

Step 9–Loadthemagazinewithfasteners.Takeastripofcollatedfastenersandinserteitherendintothemagazine(thescrews'drilltipsfaceawayfromthetool).Makesurethestripiscompletelyinserted.Youmayneedtolightlyshakethemagazineforallthescrewstodropin.Removetheplasticstriponceallscrewsareloaded.Placeasecondstripintothemagazine.Thisstripremainsinthemagazine.Upto50screwscanbeloadedintothemagazineatonetime.Whenthescrewsinthemagazinearespent,removeanyemptyplasticstripsandreload.
