In1938-1939,EdgarHandybuiltthesecondropetowintheUnitedStatesatSharonSprings.(ThefirstwasbuiltinWoodstockVT.)The1,000footskitowoperateddaily

forskierswhoenjoyedthemanytrailsofone-halftoonemileinlength,locatedonly300yardsfromtheVillage.Transportationwasavailableorguestscouldski-walkfromthehoteltothemainslopes.Excellentskiingfacilitieswereavailablefornovicesandexperts.ThemoreadventurouscouldattemptSuicideHill.DuetopeculiarclimaticconditionsatSharonSprings,snowwasoftenplentifulhereattimeswhentheslopesofthesurroundingcountrysidewerequitebarren.SharonSprings,originallyknownonlyasasummerretreat,waspromotedbytheWhiteSulphurCompanyasayear-roundresortin1940.Theskitowcloseddowninthe1950s.

welcomingpopulaceandfellowbusinessesthanwehavehereinSharonSprings. TheAmericanHotel,204Main,BlackPearl,Beekman1802andGlimmerglassOperaarespecificallysomeofthebusinessesthatcustomershavesaidreferredthemtous.LocalpeopleIknewgrowingupherehavestoppedovertocheckusoutandrefertheirrelatives.Withoutallofyou,wewouldnothavebeenassuccessfulaswehavebeen. Whenwebeganthisjourney,alotofpeople(mostlyourparentsandoccasionallyourselves)saidwewerecrazy.Nowaswelookbackatthelast

twoyears,thereisnotonethingwewouldhavechanged.Themanyguestsfromaroundtheworldaswellasthelocalassociationsthatwehavegotteninvolvedwithhavemadethisaveryenjoyableventure. Wehaveaveryvibrantandfriendlyvillagethatweareproudtobeapartof.Ourfestivalsandmusiceventsaretheenvyofmanyoftheneighboringtownsandvillages. Asforfestivals,theVictorianChristmasCelebrationhasbecomeourfavoriteeventoftheyear.Idontknowifitstheholidayspiritorthebeautyofitorthefactthatitisalittlelesshecticforus.ThehousecomesalivewithChristmasdecorationsandthevillagetakesonthelookofaNorman

Rockwellpainting.Whitesnowputsanicecleancoveroverthedormantvegetationandjustaddsaquietblankettothevillage.Itswonderfultoseethestreetslinedwithbeautiful,Victoriancostumesandallthevariousholidayactivitiesthatgoonthroughouttheday. Again,KellyandIaresincerelyhappytobeapartofthiscommunityandappreciateeveryonesassistanceingettingusgoing.

A SPECIAL TREAT FROM ROSIE

Hi Nancy and Chatter friends,I came upon a quote by Thomas Jefferson in an old book. "I findfriendship to be like wine, raw when new, ripened with age, the true oldman's milk and restorative cordial." I thought we could include a recipe

for a Ruby Cordial.

1 1/2 cups whole, fresh cranberries2 cups vodka2 cups sugar1 orange juice bottle

quart size decorative glass bottlesCrush cranberries in a bowl with a metal spoon. Add vodka and sugar.Pour into juice bottle and let sit for about a month. Stir every 10 days todissolve sugar. Pour into decorative bottles, straining out cranberries.With its bright red color this is a festive gift to bring to friends atChristmastime. Tie the bottlenecks with wide green ribbons and a sprigof holly or juniper.
