This year, forego thosestore-bought plastic reindeersand craft your own holiday

décor instead.Personalization adds a

unique and elegant touch to

your home. And with a littleingenuity, even items you’dnormally throw away like

candy wrappers and old mag-azines can be transformedinto spectacular vases, holidaygifts and jewelry.

"Grab a sheet of paper andhold it in your hands. Think ofall the things you can do withit: Crumple it, fold it, rip it,paint it, weave it, stitch it, tearpaper into strips to makepapier-mâché or cut it intointricate designs. Each sheetof paper contains endless pos-sibilities,” says Kayte Terry, visual merchandising manag-er for Anthropologie storesand author of “Paper Made,” anew crafting book full of proj-ect ideas made from every daymaterials.

Here’s a project you can tryat home, that just takes 10steps. Terry is offering direc-tions for a “Ring Around theRosey Vase,” so you can plantyour Holly this year in a vasemade by you:

1. Use a craft knife, ruler, and cutting mat to cut maga-zine pages into 600 1/4 inchstrips.

2. Use cylindrical objects ofdifferent sizes as rollinginstruments. Roll the stripsaround the object once, thenbrush glue on the next sectionof the strip and roll again. Dabglue at the end of the strip toseal the coil.

3. Brush each roll withdecoupage medium and setaside to dry.

4. Trace the bottom of thejar onto the cardboard withpencil. Add 1 inch to thediameter, and use a craft knifeto cut it out. Cut a magazinepage in a circle 2 inches larger

in diameter than the base.5. Brush one side of the

cardboard circle with whiteglue and center and press itfacedown onto the magazinecircle. Use the craft knife tocut slits 1 inch apart from theedge of the magazine circle tothe edge of the cardboard cir-cle.

6. Brush edges of the maga-zine circle with glue and wrapeach 1 inch tab around theedge of the cardboard circle.

7. Brush glue along theouter edge of the circle andattach a row of paper coilsaround the base. Vary the sizeof the coils, making sure thateach coil’s edges of touch thenext.

8. Continue gluing thepaper coils, stacking them inuneven rows. Every threerows, brush the inside andoutside of the vase withdecoupage medium and letdry. Leave more spacebetween the coils as the rowsstack higher.

9. Check the height of thevase by placing the jar insideit. Add paper coils until theyrise about 1" above the glassjar.

10. Remove the jar. Brushthe inside and outside of thevase with decoupage mediumand let dry completely beforereplacing the jar.

You don’t need to spend afortune on crafting supplies.By rescuing materials fromyour recycling bin, you cantransform your home for theholidays with unique colorfulobjects.

Looking for a thoughtful gift this holiday season?Give a gift basket!

Don’t be intimidated by the task -- it`s easy to cre-ate the perfect gift basket for even the fussiest per-son.

"A food basket is a welcome gift for all occasions,"says Bonnie Tempesta, founder of the cookie compa-ny Boncora Biscotti. "You can make it as elegant, whimsical or celebratory as you want -- and at what-ever cost your budget allows."

Gift baskets also offer a chance to inject some per-sonality into a gift.

"What you choose to put in a gift basket is a reflec-tion of who you are as a gift giver," says JeanThompson, Owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolates, maker of premium chocolate bars and truffles. "It`sa great way to share your good taste."

Follow these simple tips to make unique gift bas-kets for everyone on your list:

Decide what you want to include before you buythe basket so you can pick the right size. No matter

what size basket you use, it should be overflowing. If a traditional wooden basket isn`t your style,

look for other vessels: a colorful paper bag, a prettypastry box, a flower pot. The possibilities are endless-- and inexpensive.

Fill the basket with higher- and lower-priceditems to keep overall costs down. Include items ofvarying heights to add visual interest.

Arrange the contents around a theme, such asall things red or everything handmade or all choco-late!

Choose foods you love or products you`re excit-ed about trying. Chances are, if you were wowed bya treat, your gift recipient will be too.

“Go for edibles that don't need to be eaten rightaway,” says Edmond Sanctis, co-founder of SahaleSnacks. “Treats that can be nibbled and shared allseason long are ideal gift basket additions."

Splurge on indulgences your recipient normallywouldn`t buy for him or herself, like limited-editionholiday chocolate from Seattle Chocolates. You can

find a wide range of such products in all colors andstyles to suit any gift basket theme.

Add a food item that’s new or hard to find. Forexample, Boncora Biscotti, available only online, arehandmade to order. Plain or dipped in chocolate, they go great with a cup of joe, so pair this gift withsome gourmet coffee.

Include unusual flavor combinations that canbe used for snacking as well as cooking. SahaleCrunchers almond snacks can be eaten out of handor used for holiday meal prep. Plus, they're glutenfree.

Use colorful, recyclable paper, like tissue paperor shredded paper, to fluff up the contents of yourbasket.

The finishing touch on a gift basket is not theshrink wrap; it`s the note. Tell your gift recipientwhy you chose what you did!

With these tips, you're sure to create a gift yourfriends and family will appreciate.

The holiday season is themost festive time of year, from singing in the streets togatherings with friends andfamily. So if you’re going to beentertaining, you’ll want yourparty to feel as cheerful as theseason itself and to add somestyle and flair to make yourparty sparkle.

From the décor to the tablesettings to the food, a fewunique twists can makeguests feel welcomed,

impressed and ready to partyupon arrival. So set the moodaccordingly.

Delight on ArrivalYou can delight their sens-

es right away with a lit fire-place or by brewing a holidaypunch or cider with cinna-mon and other aromatic fla-vors. Also, be sure that yourentranceway is decorated forthe season and that there’smusic playing. A crooner likeBing Crosby performing holi-

day hits is a classic choice.Just keep the volume at aconversation-friendly level.

Think Small PresentationInstead of hosting a multi-

course sit-down dinner, makelife easier on yourself andmore fun for your guests witha splendid spread of smallplates. A small plate dinnermeans guests can eat when-ever they arrive and mix andmingle as they do so – it’s aneasy, fun way to entertain.

When it comes to parties, the visual impact of your foodis as important as its taste. This is where small platesshine, as little tastes can havea big impact with their colors, shapes and designs.

Give guests’ a taste surprisewith a round-the-world lineup of cuisines, from tradi-tional sliders to more exoticchoices like dumplings andMediterranean dips. Forinspiration, turn to a cook-

book devoted solely to minia-ture appetizers and desserts, such as those from authorRobert Zollweg.

Aim for each dish to featureabout four to six bites of foodthat can be eaten comfortablyseated or standing, andarrange dishes on small, sleekplates, such as Libbey JustTastings mini dinnerware col-lection. Both the Just Tastingscollection and cookbook lineare available at Bed Bath &Beyond.

For the sake of presenta-tion, be sure your dishes pres-ent a great array of colors.Attendees will naturally endup moving around the roomin order to taste everything.Make sure to coordinatetablecloths, napkins, candle-holders and centerpieces in aseasonal color scheme. Youcan find a colorful assortmentof each at www.bedbathand-beyond.com. Don’t be afraidto think creatively!

Dress it UpYou can dress up your party

space with a few simple andelegant flourishes. You canmake stylish centerpieces bytaking clear bowls and fillingthem with colorful ornamentsand pretty greenery. And youcan fill glasses with coloredstones or small candles to adda sophisticated glow to theroom.

By setting a mood that isboth cheerful and chic, youcan make a great impressionon guests and throw a partythey won’t soon forget.

You can bet that during theholiday season your pet isbound to sniff out leftovers, dig into the presents and havefun with all of your decora-tions. And while these holidayeffects can spread cheer andjoy amongst your humanfamily members, they can be

a real hazard to pets. This sea-son, keep your holiday cele-bration safe, happy andhealthy for pets by takingthese key measures:

Decorate WiselyAvoid poisonous holiday

plants like poinsettias andholly. There are plenty of

toxic-free alternatives asevocative of the season asthese traditional holidayfavorites. If you must deck thehalls with such plants, placethem in an out of the way spotyour pets can’t reach and keepyour pets away from thoseareas of your home.

Tinsel and gift ribbons aretempting for pets that like toplay with shiny things, butwhen swallowed, such itemscan cause intestinal obstruc-tions. Clean up after openingpresents and vacuum aroundthe tree to pick up any giftdebris, as well as fallen pineneedles which pose a similarhazard.

Avoid the ProblemWhen it comes to the holi-

days, there’s no need to be aGrinch in order to keep yourcelebration safe for pets. Newtechnologies are making iteasier to teach pets to stayaway from certain areas ofyour home, both indoors andoutside.

For example, InvisibleFence Brand Micro ShieldsAvoidance Solutions are smallmobile wireless units to trainpets to avoid areas of thehome or yard where theymight get in trouble. And ifyou have multiple pets, youcan set different rules for dif-ferent pets.

So don’t forgo that lovelyholiday candle display justbecause you have a pet in yourlife.

More information can befound atwww.invisiblefence.com .

Watch Your PlateAs most great pet owners

know, not all human foods aresafe or healthy for pets. Petscan choke on bones in meat orfish dishes. And such foods asonions, macadamia nuts andchocolate -- which are com-monly found in holiday cook-ing and baking -- are unsafefor dogs.

Avoid having your well-meaning guests sending Spotto the vet by laying groundrules about sharing food.

Also, one man’s trash is apet’s treasure, so be sure tokeep the lid on the garbagesecure.

By taking proper precau-tions, you can keep the holi-days festive this year for bothyou and your pets.

Whether you are in a newhome or have been in yourhome for many years, com-ing home should feel like get-ting a big hug.

There are only subjectiverules when it comes to deco-rating. Many confuse this factby believing that there is a“right way” to decorate aspace. What is light and opento one may feel hollow andempty to another. Whatseems cozy and “lived in” toanother, might seem clut-tered and unsafe to you.Wherever you see yourself, what matters is the courageto work those realities intoyour design plans.

Creating a room that looksand feels good is not a myste-rious process. The point isnot to adhere to rules or fol-low fashion, but rather tofind what you like and incor-porate it. When puttingtogether a room, start byunderstanding a few princi-ples of composition: space -defining space and using it;

color - determining moodand function; pattern - forcharacter, depth and visualinterest and texture - to givethe space its “feel.”

Space is the essentialdefining consideration of aroom. How much is there? How little? What is the qual-ity of the space? What is thefunction of the space?Mirrors are magic when itcomes to changing percep-tions about a room’s space.Placed strategically, mirrorscreate the illusion of a largerspace.

Color/Pattern: Color is oneof the most emotional sub-jects in decorating and is verypersonal. Tradition hastaught us that only certaincolors are appropriate forcertain spaces. But when col-oring your world, have nofear: the rules are few and therewards are many. Whendeciding a color scheme, con-sider what furnishings andart pieces will be used. Useyour fabrics, china and art to

help you. Pattern, with color,is one of the most basicdesign tools. No matter how

subtle, patterns can bring aroom to life adding character, depth and visual interest.

Texture gives the space its“feel.” All of our decorativetreatments and objects in aroom - even the amount ofstuffing in the upholstery -add to the atmosphere of theroom. Fabrics add softness;stone and marble convey asense of weight and perma-nence and improve overtime. Brass, steel andwrought iron supply hard-ness and edge.

Great rooms begin withhow you feel about being inthem. Successful decoratinginvolves making rooms feelas good as they look.

A home is really an attitudeand a mind-set that is createdphysically by the choices youmake. Your home shouldprovide a sense of belongingand be a refuge that calmsyou, pleases you and makesof you no demands.

Tip: Patience - The chal-lenge in decorating your newhome is likely to be bothemotional and physical. Takeyour time in making yourchoices and selecting yournew possessions. Do not feelpressured to buy impulsivelyjust “to fill in a space.” It’syour home you’re building, not a showroom.
