Learn now how water is processed in Denton

DRC FILE PHOTO

Lake Lewisville is one of two area lakes that provide water to Denton residents.

Few people, when turning ona faucet, give much thought towhere their water comes fromor how it gets to them.

Only within the past 100years or so has safe and steadywater supply become some-thing that residents can takefor granted.

This achievement, oftenovershadowed by more dra-matic technological develop-ments, is nonetheless one ofthe most important advancesin modern civilization, accord-ing to City of Denton pam-phlets. Drastically reducingwater-borne diseases and fos-tering new developments intechnology and industry wouldnot be possible without a clean, consistent supply of water.

The Safe Water Drinking Actwas originally passed byCongress in 1974, and wasamended in 1986 and 1996.Originally, the Safe WaterDrinking Act focused primarilyon treatment as the means forproviding safe drinking waterat the tap, but later amend-ments expand the SafeDrinking Water Act to protectresidents’ health from source totap.

The City of DentonMunicipal UtilitiesDepartment operates andmaintains the public watersupply system for Denton resi-dents. Denton has two sourcesfor obtaining its water – LakeLewisville and Lake RayRoberts.

Denton currently holdswater rights for up to 24 mil-lion gallons per day from thetwo lakes. A dual intake struc-ture on the north shore of theHickory Creek arm of LakeLewisville gives the LakeLewisville Water TreatmentPlant operators the option ofwithdrawing raw lake waterfrom two different levels inorder to provide the best waterquality.

Before the raw water leavesthe raw water pump station, itreceives its first treatment – adose of potassium perman-ganate – which improves theraw water’s taste and odor.Adding the chemical before the9-mile journey from the rawwater pump station to thetreatment plant provides timefor the chemical reaction todevelop along the way.

Raw water flows to the LakeRay Roberts Water TreatmentPlant through the intake struc-ture built into the dam and isregulated with by-pass pipingand a flow control valve thatallows it to gravity-flowthrough the plant when thelake levels are high, reducingthe electrical operating costs ofthe facility.

Raw water pumps are uti-lized when lake levels are low.Lake Ray Roberts raw waterreceives its first treatment, pre-ozonation, at the plant. Pre-ozonation conditions the rawwater and makes it easier forthe organic materials and

debris to be removed as it flowsthrough the plant. This processactually reduces the amount ofchemical coagulants needed toclean the raw water.

The Lake Lewisville WaterTreatment Plant, completed in1957, had an initial capacity of4 million gallons per day. Plantexpansions in 1962, 1972 and1988 took the plant to 8, 16 andits current capacity of 30 mil-lion gallons per day respective-ly. The plant has kept pace withchanging water quality stan-dards through nearly 50 yearsof service.

The Lake Ray Roberts WaterTreatment Plant began con-struction in June of 2001 andofficially went online in May of2003. The current capacity of

the plant is 20 million gallonsper day, but the plant has beenmaster planned for an ultimateproduction capacity of 100 mil-lion gallons per day to sustainfuture growth and provide thecity with high quality drinkingwater well into the 21st century.

The new water plant is asecure, state-of-the-art facilitythat incorporates a superiorwater disinfection system, abackup power generation sys-tem and cost-cutting produc-tion methods that can be regu-lated from a central location.

Coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation are all basi-cally the same at the plants. After sedimentation, the set-tled water flows into the inter-mediate ozone contactor.

Ozone disinfection is about1,000 times more effectivethan chlorine at destroyingbacteria and viruses in water. After the ozonation process, the water moves through filterssimilar to the Lake LewisvilleWater Treatment Plant.Following filtration, the waterflows to the transfer pump sta-tion where it is pumped to theclearwell or ground storagetank.

Both plants then transfer thetreated water from the clear-wells to the distribution systemusing high-pressure pumps. The distribution system hasbooster stations that reboostthe water to the various pres-sure zones and water towerslocated in Denton.

A kitchen worth cooking inPut everything in its place so there’s space for you to prepare, cook and enjoy meals year-round

By Cathy CassataCTW Features

Deciding what to cook formeals is challenging enoughwithout having to fightthrough an unorganizedkitchen. Make this dreadeddaily decision a bit easier bywhipping the kitchen into

cooking and dining shape withhelpful tips from chefs, akitchen designer and a profes-sional organizer.

PPaannttrryy ppeerrffeeccttIf your dream walk-in

pantry is a nightmare of amess, divide it into zones. “Put

items you don’t use often uphigh, items that are heavydown low and items you regu-larly use at eye-level,” saysMarlene Buckner, designerand owner of The UrbanRealm in Portland, Ore.

Make rotating items a habit, says Devin Alexander, host of

Healthy “Decadence” on FitTVand author of “The BiggestLoser Cookbook” series.“Instead of putting a new canof soup in front of an older can,put it behind,” she says. “Ittakes a little longer, but it’sworth it because you’ll eatfresher food and throw away

less expired food.”To manage the oft-untidy

snack cabinet, Lea Schneider, owner oforganizerightnow.com has asolution. “Use an easy-to-reach large basket placed ateye-level to hold opened pack-ages of things, such as cookies, crackers, chips and granolabars,” she says. Then, use alabeled area of a top shelf tohold the new, unopenedreplacement boxes. “Not onlydoes this system encouragefamily members to eat thealready opened packages first, but makes it much easier foryou to judge when you need tostock up,” she adds.

Remember not all drygoods belong in the pantry, says Dean Zanella, executivechef at Rhapsody restaurantin Chicago. “Some thingsmake more sense if they’recloser to where you’ll be cook-ing,” he says. “I keep my spicesin a cabinet by the stove ratherthan the pantry, so I can easilyreach them when needed.”Zanella says this also opens uproom in the pantry for bulkieritems or appliances you don’talways use. “Since I keep somedry goods throughout cabi-nets in my kitchen, the bottomshelf of my pantry is free forthings like my blender.”

SSttuuffffeedd wwiitthh ssttuuffffBefore you begin a mad

hunt for the best spot for dish-es, glasses, utensils and gadg-ets, Schneider says take every-thing out and purge. “Onlykeep one of each item unlessyou are sure that you use twoat the same time. For instance, keep two ladles if you tend tomake two different pots ofsoup at once,” she says.Alexander agrees and saysmultiple sets of certain thingscan actually make your life inthe kitchen easier. “For thingslike measuring cups and

The key to an organized kitchen is keeping only the items you use regularly - and purging those you don’t.

Page 15: April Real Estate Showcase 2011

spoons, if you have dry andwet ingredients, you don’twant to extend your cookingtime by washing and drying ameasuring spoon in-betweensteps. But, do you really need

more than one ice creammaker? Decide what you’llneed more of and what youwon’t.”

Once you decide what’s stay-ing in the kitchen, Schneider

suggests applying the “next-to”rule. “If an item has a compan-ion piece, it should be storednext-to that item. Coffeeshould go next to mugs, whichshould be near the coffee

maker,” she says. Zanella fol-lows this method regularly. “Ikeep utensils that I’m going touse for certain types of cook-ing with each other. I have adrawer where my measuringcups and spoons are that I usefor baking close to my pans forbaking, and my silverwaredrawer is near my dinnertable. while my utensils draw-er is closer to my stove.”

FFrriiddggee ffrreennzzyyStretch your grocery budget

and keep your family healthyby organizing your refrigera-tor weekly, Schneider says.“Before making a week’s menuand grocery list, clean out theexpired foods, wipe up messes, make a note of leftovers thatneed to be eaten and incorpo-rate those items into your nextweek’s meal plan,” she says. Tokeep track of leftovers andopened items, Alexander saysto mark cooked dishes andopened items by labelingthem with the date they werecooked or opened. Then place

the stuff that will go bad firstnear the front of the shelf. “Ifyou have children or multiplepeople in the house cooking,it’s a great way to communi-cate what needs to be eatenwhen,” she says.

Zanella says to be honestabout what will be used.“Think about when you’regoing to use that condimentagain and if you really need it,”he says. “There’s no pointkeeping something in thefridge for months for a recipeyou’ve been meaning to get to,but won’t.” To make space,Zanella recommends cuttingup fruits and veggies intosmall pieces and storing themin containers. “Instead ofwhole grapefruits taking upmy produce bin, I’ll cut themup, store them in containersand put them on a shelf,” hesays. “This way I can’t missthem and I can use the pro-duce bin for other things thatwon’t expire as quickly.”

Happy MediumWith happy-go-lucky hues like honeysuckle pink, it’s never been easier

to organize with mood in mindBy Marilyn Kennedy MeliaCTW Features

Get happy – that’s the col-lective message home- andinterior-products makers aretelling folks this year.

The world has been a pret-ty tough place for the pastdecade, racked by war andrecession.

For 2011, expect to seesome “happy” colors in every-thing from dishes to furnitureto throw pillows, says LeatriceEiseman, director of thePantone Color Institute whoalso writes the morealive-withcolor.com blog. ThePantone Institute, whichtracks color trends, declaredhoneysuckle pink its 2011Color of the Year because “it’san instant pick-me-up,”Eiseman shares.

But color is just one way toadd a dose of cheer.

Of course, just as each of usdefines happy in our ownterms, mood boosters are amatter of individual taste.

Still, experts can point toseveral themes that make ahome a happy refuge:

CClleeaarr aanndd CCoommffoorrttiinnggSure, a bright throw tossed

over a sofa can lift your mood– but only if the view isn’tobscured by piles of unreadmail or other anxiety-induc-ing clutter.

“What do we want to see,and what do we hide?” asksSeattle architect Milan Heger.Developing an “aesthetic dis-cipline” to get in the habit ofclearing away clutter is theprimary step towards a happyhome, he says. “First we cre-

ate a good way to store objects,”Heger says. Book shelves, cabi-nets or even neat piles keep thedistractions in their place, headds.

CCoolloorr--CCooddeeddOrganization clears your

space, which in turn clearsyour mind.

Our own reluctance toorganize is the only obstacle inthe way to clear-headedness.Combine another mood lifter –

namely color – to spur yourselfinto action.

Kate S. Brown, a certifiedprofessional organizer inSarasota, Fla., shares that col-orful organizing tools and filesprompt people who hate to putobjects in their place or file getstarted. “For instance, I’ve seenpeople who have purchasedphoto files in a color that coor-dinates with their room getreally excited about using the

files – and then after they’rethrough they’re even more sat-isfied,” Brown shares.

Emotion-enhancing huesvary according to the individ-ual and with the spaceinvolved, underscores AnitraMecadon, host of the DIYNetwork series “Mega Dens.”

“For example, red is a pas-sionate color that stimulatesthe senses – it’s great foradding life to an active room,”

says Mecadon. On the otherhand, Mecadon adds, you canachieve happiness with “somegreat soothing earth tones, orpale shades of green-blue,which are peaceful and calm-ing.”

Eiseman adds, “Our favoritecolors in surroundings alwaysmake us feel better. Each colorhas a different effect, but allbright colors can give us a lift.”

FFlloowweerr PPoowweerrTake time to smell the roses.

And put them in a vase. Andset them out where you’ll viewthem often.

Scientific studies, like onerecently conducted by RutgersUniversity, find that flowersprompt immediate positiveresponses, and are even relat-ed to better social behaviorsand memory skills. Moreover, the researchers find the boostis likely to last even after thebloom fades a bit. The Rutgersstudy finds women whoreceived flowers reportedmore positive moods threedays later.

SSmmaallll CChhaannggeeJust as you may need a

break from your routine to revup your spirits, adding a doseof difference to a couple ofrooms every season can rev upthe senses.

“Utilize new candles, colorsand scents,” suggests KristinAndress, who runs the Website imaginebeing.com. “Adddifferent throw pillows to thecouch or a lively rug to yourfoyer. The energy of yourrooms will improve with sim-ple changes here and there.”

Float OnAnchor the family room with a ‘floating’ furniture arrangement

to create space - or at least the illusion of itBy Dawn KlingensmithCTW Features

Challenge: Open floor plans, though still popular, putdesign skills to the test becausethere are few walls to place fur-niture against. On the otherhand, small spaces can feel asthough the walls are closing in.

Proposed solution: Pull fur-niture away from the walls and“float” it in the room. In anopen floor plan, this provides acozy seating area. In a smallroom, it creates the appear-ance of airiness.

Bigger challenge: Getting

the proposed solution to work.

AAiirryy AArrrraannggeemmeennttssA floating arrangement is

difficult to pull off, since any-thing other than perfect place-ment can make furnishingslook like “ships cast at sea” oras though someone cleanedthe walls and forgot to movethe furniture back, says NewYork designer Scott Salvator.

For the average person, andeven for pros, a successful out-come “requires a lot of arrang-ing and rearranging,” saysdesigner Dawn Falcone, also of

New York. “You have to setaside time to work with yourfurniture. Sometimes justpushing something back oneinch makes all the difference inthe world.”

In certain rooms, a floatingarrangement simply won’twork, no matter how manyrounds of “musical furniture”you undertake. “It’s really anarchitecture-driven thing. Ifthe room is big and open in alldirections, a floating floor planworks great,” Salvator says, though an island of furniturein the middle of the room

requires at least 3 feet of walk-ing space around the perime-ter.

To begin experimenting, remove everything from theroom except your largest fur-nishings, such as your sofaand love seat. Identify theroom’s focal point, or createone. In a living room, it’s usu-ally the fireplace or television.

The focal point is youranchor, Falcone says, andguides the placement of yourremaining furniture.Generally, the sofa looks gooddirectly across from the focalpoint, facing it at a comfort-able distance. Other piecescan then be angled toward thefocal point or oriented aroundthe sofa to create a balancedarrangement conducive toconversation.

Alternately, you can placethe sofa and a love seat toform an L, with the arms closetogether for cohesion. Youprobably will need to placefurnishings with comparable“visual weight” across fromthe love seat for balance. Anarea rug can be used to defineand unify your arrangement,Falcone says.

With your primary pieces inplace, you need to figure outhow to use the rest of thespace. “In a huge room, ifeverything’s in the middle youneed to have other groupingsof furniture,” Falcone says.Against one wall, you could

place two chairs with an occa-sional table between them, forexample.

In the best-case scenario, these groupings wouldaccommodate other activities, such as reading, Falcone says.

OOffff tthhee WWaallllssA floating floor plan leaves

you with blank, gallery-likewalls. If smaller furnituregroupings aren’t possible, fillin the space with framed pho-tos and artwork, or place aconsole table against the walland hang a striking piece ofartwork above it, Falcone sug-gests.

For smaller rooms, considermoving furniture off the wallat an angle instead ofunmooring it altogether. Forexample, angle your sofa offthe wall slightly and put atable and table lamp behind itin the widest part of the pie-shaped space you’ve created.Or keep the sofa parallel to thewall but bring it out farenough to put a rectangulartable behind it.

One problem with floatingfloor plans is that there’s noplace to plug things in, thoughin some homes it’s possible toretrofit floor outlets. Make nomistake: “You’ll need tablelamps and floor lamps nomatter how much natural andoverhead lighting you have,”Falcone says.

‘If the room is big and open in all directions, a floatingfloor plan works great,’ says designer Scott Salvator.

Face the sofa toward the room’s focal point, then angle in other pieces to create a bal-anced conversation area.
