Help BRSD finalize the 2013-2014 School Calendar

Battle River School Division is seeking input from parents, students and staff regarding the school calendar for next year. From December 1 to 21 there will be two calendar options posted on the BRSD website (www.brsd.ab.ca). Please take a moment to view the two calendars and select which option you would prefer.

Based on the input, a final decision on the 2013-2014 school calendar will be made in January.

The Grade One Class would like to thank the Alberta Farm Safety Centre for the presentation on November 27. Mrs L. taught us: “Stay Safe / Play Safe!”, said Heather. She also reminded us, “To ask an adult before going to the shop, the barn, by water, or on the ice,” said Kohl. “We need to stay away from machinery,” said Emma. The biggest danger for grade one students is getting ran over. Cash said, “Stay away from farm animals, especially if they have babies!” Stay on the other side of the fence with an adult. Kail said, “Stay away from augers.” William reminded us about quads, skidoos, and tractors, “One Seat / One Rider!” The best way to Stay Safe and Play Safe is to stay in or near your house to play. If you need to leave that area, ask an adult!!!

Mark your calendars for the New Year! Bottle Drive - Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 – Starts at 12:00 p.m.

Proceeds to the Viking Grad Class of 2013 Town residents leave donated bottles on front steps for pick up.

Rural residents and Businesses - contact a grad student or call Cindy at (780) 390-0515 to arrange pick up.

An earlier date for pick up can be arranged upon request.

Thank you for your support and Merry Christmas!

P.A.R.T.Y. Program

On Tuesday, November 20 the Grade 9 class attended the P.A.R.T.Y program at the Miseri-cordia Hospital in Edmonton. The P.A.R.T.Y program is designed to Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth. We started off the day in the auditorium watching a presentation about what could happen when you don’t wear seatbelts and also when you drink and drive. We then watched a presentation from a police officer about drinking and driving. After that we tossed a ball to each other while wearing special glasses. These glasses simulated how vision would be impaired after drinking too much alcohol. We were surprised at how difficult it was to accurately throw and catch the ball. We then learned about spinal cord and brain injuries. After this presentation we were allowed to touch a cow’s spinal cord and brain. At lunch, we could not use our fingers on either of our hands as we wore braces and had our hands taped up. We wore a neck collar and also wore glasses that impaired our vision in some way. It was difficult to eat our lunch, but we did experience some of what it would be like to be injured permanently. After lunch we listened to a few different speakers talk about their injuries and how these inju-ries have affected themselves and others around them. It was quite emotional listening to these people. In all, we learned to try to make smart decisions. Some of these decisions include wearing the proper gear for an activity to reduce the chance of being seriously injured. We learned to not text or be otherwise distracted when driving. We learned not to drive if we have been drinking. This day was a very good learning opportunity for all of us. We would like to thank Mr. Lorne Smith and Mrs. Janice McKie for helping supervise this activity.

Players, parents and spectators can check out our Athletics section on the website at www.brsd.ab.ca/school/viking/athletics/basketball.
