    4/20

Its beginning to look like the

    holidays throughout LaGrange

    as the community readies for

    the thirty-seventh annual

Christmas parade, December 5,2013, sponsored by the

    LaGrange-Troup County

    Chamber of Commerce.

All I Want for Christmas Is . .

., this years parade theme, is

    causing everyone to get

    creative with their decorating

    ideas according to LeTisha

    Smith, parade coordinator.

    Since Gail and Pat Hunnicutt

were selected as grand mar-shals, we thought the theme

was a perfect tribute to Dr.

    Hunnicutts dental practice and

    also appealed to every child

    making their Santa wish list.

In addition to the entry fee, all

    participants are contributing

toys this year. We are partner-

ing with Toys for Tots to dis-

    tribute the toys to children

throughout Troup County, noted Smith. The Chamber

    wanted to remind everyone that

the best gift this year is one that

is given to someone in need.

    This year parade spectators will

    have an opportunity to

    participate in the gift

    exchange. Volunteers for Toys

    for Toys will follow Santa

Claus at the end of the parade

and collect toys. Spectators areasked to hold the unwrapped

    toys until the volunteers walk

by their area along the parade

    route. The volunteer will take

the toy to the vehicles where

    the toys are being collected.

    Bernard Bledsoe of the Marine

    Corps League Detachment

1040 indicates this is a great

    opportunity for parents. He

believes if you are a parent or

grandparent and want to teach a

child about the true meaning of

Christmas, let the child pick outa toy to give to someone else.

The best kind of giving is a gift

    to someone in need.

    The parade committee also

    announced that the parade will

begin at Granger Park and head

    south on North Greenwood

    Street. Marching groups will

be merged into the parade from

    St. Marks with the procession

going down North Greenwoodto Haralson Street. The parade

will then turn right onto Church

Street to the Square and Bull

    Street. New this year, the

    parade will turn left onto

    Broome Street before turning

    back onto Main. The proces-

    sion will then follow Main

    Street, past the Square to

    Ridley Avenue.

    The change to the parade

routeturning onto BroomeStreetwas made to allow for

    an east-west corridor through

    the city.

Some of our larger floats will

    continue down Bull until it

    intersects with Main and rejoins

    the main parade route,

    explained Smith. However, she

    stressed that spectators should

not line that part of Bull Street

since they will be able to view

    only a few entries.

    Were so happy that the

    Downtown Development

    Authority of LaGrange asked

Santa to arrive early to the

Lafayette Plaza. From 3 to 5

    pm children can take pictures

    with Santa, Frosty the

    Snowman and Rudolph the

    Red-Nosed Reindeer, so arrive

    early!

    Mayor Jeff Lukken will host

    the annual LaGrange tree light-

    ing ceremony beginning at 5:15

pm on the Plaza. Parade Grand

    Marshals Pat and Gail

    Hunnicutt and their family will

    flip the switch to illuminate

    the downtown tree.

    Watch the weatheryou may

    need a raincoat or umbrella,

    commented Smith. However,

we hope the forecasted rainmoves out of the area before 6

    pm. The parade will proceed

    rain or shine.

Acts 4:19 But Peter and John

    answered and said unto them,

Whether it be right in the sight

of God to hearken unto you

more than unto God, judge ye.

    This was Peter and Johns

    answer when told they could

not preach or teach in the name

    of Jesus. Their answer then

must be our answer today. Our

    military Christian chaplains

    were recently told they could

not pray in the name of

    Jesus! Now, friends, if we

    Christians dont pray in the

name of Jesus, just who do we

pray to? Is it alla, some moon

god? Or is it RA, some sun

    god?

As for me, I pray in the name

of JESUS. Jesus said he and

the FATHER am one, and, I

want to pray to the real one!

Our Bible tells to pray in the

name of Jesus. Who will you

    obey, some person or Gov.?

I kinda think its better to obey

    our Bible, dont you??

    I remember when we

went to the bank and had

    go inside to do your

    banking. There was no

    drive-thru. The firstdrive-thru incident

    proved to be a very

    embarrassing. I was the

    one that usually went to

    the bank for everybody

    so I had several deposits.

    Sometimes I would have

    to go to several banks

    before I was through.

    I went through the manu-

    al pull-in box. I

    exchanged greetings with

    the teller while putting

the deposit in the box. Idont know if I was

    slower that day removing

    my hand but she pulled

the box in and it snapped

    on my hand. We thought

    that she could just push

    the box back out.

    Not!!!!!!!!!!!! It would

    not move. We tried

    everything. It would not

move. My hand wasnthurting. It was just hang-

    ing in the box.

    The cars are backing

    up behind me. They sent

    someone out to redirect

    them to another line. A

    workman was called. He

    had to take some screws

    out before it would

    release my hand. It took

about 45 minutes toremove my hand.

    Someone from inside

    called and told them at

work I would be late and

why. I wish they had not

    told them why. People in

    the bank line were all

    ready laughing as they

    went through the other

    line. My hand had a

small mark across the topand not hurt but boy, was

    I embarrassed. I went

    through several days of

    teasing.

    It seems I have trou-

    ble at banks. My

    thoughts are if we have

    to use these little drive-

    thru boxes they should

all be alike. I have beento every bank in town

    and they are all different.

    This time my friend Ann

    was with me and this

    was her bank. We

    stopped to get her check

    cashed at her bank. This

was a new bank and had

    Actors & Acting

    Acting, not prostitution,

    is the oldest profession.

    Even apes act.

    - Marlon Brando

    Acting is the most

    minor of gifts. After all,

    Shirley Temple could

    do it when she was

    four.

    - Katherine Hepburn

    I never said all actors

    are cattle; what I said

    was all actors should be

    treated like cattle.

    - Alfred Hitchcock

    How many actors does

it take to change a light

    bulb? One hundred.

    One to change the bulb,

and 99 to say I could

    have done that.

    just opened a new

    drive-thru. We got in

    line where they have

    cylinders that you put

your check inside and ittravels to the teller. I

    grab the cylinder quick-

ly because we are in a

hurry. I put the check in

and throw it in the hole.

    I turned to say some-

    thing to Ann and heard

    a noise. The cylinder

    was back. I tossed it

again into the hole. Itrolled back down. What

    is wrong with this

thing? I slide out of my

truck and got in a good

position to toss it in and

    threw really hard. It

    rolled back again. The

    line is backing up,

    which by the way it

    always does, behindme.

    As I am standing

    there beside the cylin-

    der so intent on finding

out why it is not work-

    ing I dont notice the

    people around me

    laughing. I looked at

    the teller at the same

    time she keyed her

    microphone and said

Push the Button,Please. I pushed the

    little tiny red button, a

    door opens and the

    cylinder falls through

on its way to the teller.

I slid back in my truck

with a very red face. I

    looked at Ann and she

    is in the floor board

laughing. I said youcould have told me. She

    said it was too funny.

I ask her why she was

    in the floor board and

    she said she didnt want

anyone to see her. I told

    her too bad your name

    is on that check. I

    think the little red but-

ton should be bigger. Ifit had been maybe I

    would have seen it.

    Shhhhhhhh, You must be

    quiet while the other chil-

    dren are practicing! We

    often heard those words as

    Mrs. Miller shushed us yet

    another time. She was really

    quite lenient with us

    because it was Christmas

    time and she knew how

    excited we were. She didnt

    really care if we whispered

    quietly but we knew better

than to be loud or rowdy.

    After all, it was nearly

    Christmas and those prover-

    bial visions of sugarplums

    were dancing in our heads.

It was time for the annual

    Christmas program at

    Baring School and our par-

    ents and the whole commu-

nity would come to hear us.

    The procedure was the same

every year. We sat in our

    class groups on the gym

    floor of Baring school while

we waited for our turn to

    practice our part of the

    Christmas program on the

    stage. We looked forward to

it because we got out of our

    regular classes so we obedi-

    ently marched in single file

    from our classroom to our

spot on the gym floor to sit

    and wait.

    The stage had been readied

    for the program. The tempo-

    rary walls had been taken

    down to expose the full

    stage where we would per-

    form. This meant that we

    couldnt hoist ourselves up

to sit on the ledge during

    noon hour and lean against

    that temporary wall and

    dangle our feet over the

    edge like we usually did.

    The stage would remain

    open until after Christmas.

    While the grade school

    practiced, the high school

    seniors worked on decorat-

    ing the Christmas tree.

What a beautiful tree it was!

    There was a very tall

    stepladder being used

because the tree was a huge

cedar tree that one of the

    local farmers cut and

brought to the school. I had

never seen a tree so big!

    The fragrance itself was

    enough to make us think

Christmas had surely cometo Baring School. A couple

of the boys put strings of

lights on the tree and then

    other decorations were

    added until it looked beautiful

right down to the final laying on

    of the icicles.

The night of the school program

finally arrived and the gym floor

    was covered with folding chairs

as families packed the gymnasi-um. Back stage we huddled in

corners waiting for our turn on

    stage. The covers had been

removed so the foot lights were

on and the curtain drew back for

    the first scene. The program

    would begin with the youngest

children and end with the oldest.

I practiced my line over and

    over because when the villain

was caught I was supposed to

say, We will let you go when

    Santa has come.

Nearly all of the Christmas car-

ols were sung by the time each

    class had performed.

Each class in our school drew

names for a gift exchange so

there were lots of gifts beneath

the tree the night of the program.

At the end of the program sud-

denly a Ho! Ho! Ho! resound-

ed from the door and everyonesattention was drawn to where

Santa entered with his pack full

    of small brown bags. Every

child was given one of the bags

    that contained hard Christmas

    candy ribbon and various other

    hard candies. The bag was

topped off with a big round

    orange.

The gifts under the tree weregiven to their recipients and at

the end there was one little girl

who had not received a gift. My

mother, who was a high school

teacher, saw the little girl who

had tears in her eyes. She looked

at the little girl and said, You

    know, I think somebody just

    missed finding your gift under

the tree. Lets go look again.

Sure enough there was a gift

    behind the Christmas tree stuck

under the tree skirt and the little

girls face lit up as she choked

    out an emotional thank you.

I knew at the time that Mama

had that same gift in her tote bag

earlier in the evening but it was-

nt until years later that the

pieces of the puzzle all fell

    together in my mind.

    Mama had simply determined

that no child would feel sad and

left out on Christmas if she

could prevent it so she carried

an extra gift or two whenever

    there was a Christmas gift

    exchange. That was because a

long time ago there was another

    Christmas program, another gift

    exchange, and another little girl

who didn't receive a gift. Back

    then, nobody noticed the little

girl who didn't receive a gift

because she was very small, and

very shy. That little girl was my

    Mama.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Christmas . . .

Q: If Santa doesn't have to age,

then why has he become old?

A: He only appears to be old.

    He's an undercover kid.

Q: How can a sleigh possibly

fly through the air? A: If you

were being pulled by eight fly-

    ing reindeer, wouldn't you fly

    too?

Q: Why do reindeer have red

    noses? A: They are not

    equipped with ABS and thus

tend to bump into things on

    slippery surfaces. This is why

Santa is often seen with a rednose (the sleigh doesn't have an

    airbag, either).

Q: Why do we wish people a

    "Merry Christmas" instead of a

    "Happy Christmas"? A: The

two are about the same, but

    with "Merry Christmas" an

extra twinkle is seen in the

    eyes.

Q: Why is a Christmas tree that

    has been chopped down called

a "live Christmas tree?" A:It's dead but doesn't know it,

and yet it's having the time of

    its life.

Q: Why do we wrap our

    Christmas gifts with paper?

A: Because we like to see sur-

prise and joy (real or kindly

    faked) in the recipients.

Q: How many angels can dance

on the head of a pin? A:

Nowadays, only four angelscan dance there. Formerly there

was no limit, but OSHA passed

    the Angel Safety Law recently,

which also requires that the pin

    must be inspected twice each

    year for structural defects.

Q: How many gifts can Santa

Claus's bag hold? A: One less

    than infinity. Why one less?

    Because there's a limit to

    everything.

Q: Is there really a Mrs. Santa

Claus? A: The best way to

know for sure is to ask Santa

Claus next time you see him.

Q: Why do we hear so many

    bells at Christmas time? A:

    Because so many people ring

    them.

    18/20

I saw a truck of Christmas trees

And each one had a tale,

The driver stood them in a row

And put them up for sale.

    He strung some twinkly lightsAnd hung a sign up with a nail;

    "FRESH CHRISTMAS TREES"

    It said in red

    "FRESH CHRISTMAS TREES

    FOR SALE."

He poured himself hot cocoa In a

    steaming thermos cup,

    And snowflakes started falling As

    a family car pulled up.

A mom, a dad, and one small

boy Who looked no more than

    three

    Jumped out and started searching

    For the perfect Christmas tree.

    The boy marched up and downthe rows, His nose high in the air;

"It smells like Christmas, mom! It

    smells like Christmas every-

    where!"

"Let's get the biggest tree we can!

A tree that's ten miles high!

A tree to go right through our

roof! A tree to touch the sky!"

"A tree SO big "That Santa Claus

Will stop and stare and say,

    'Now, THAT'S the finest

    Christmas tree I've seen this

    Christmas Day!'"

It seemed they looked at every

    tree At least three million times;

    Dad shook them, pinched them,

turned them 'round To find theperfect pine.

    "I've found it, mom! The

Christmas tree I like the best of

    all!

It's got a little bare spot, But we'll

    turn that to the wall!"

    "We'll put great-grandma's angel

    On top the highest bough!

Oh, can we buy it? Please, mom,

PLEASE?! Oh, can we buy it

    NOW?"

    "How 'bout some nice hot

    cocoa?"Asked the man who

    owned the lot.

He twisted off the thermos top,

"Now, THIS will hit the spot!"

    He poured the steaming chocolate

In three tiny paper cups. They toasted, "Here's to

    Christmas!" And they drank the

    cocoa up.

"Is this your choice?" The tree

man asked, "This pine's the best

    one here!"

    The boy seemed sad--- "My

daddy says "The price is just too

    dear."

    "Then, Merry Christmas!" Said

the man, who wrapped the tree in

twine,"It's yours for just one promise.

    You must keep at Christmas

    time!"

"On Christmas Eve at bedtime As

you fold your hands to pray,

Promise in your heart To keep the

    joy of Christmas Day!"

    "Now hurry home! This freezy

wind Is turning your cheeks pink!

And ask your dad To trim that

trunk and give that tree a drink!"

And so it went on All that blus-

    tery eve

As the tree man gave Tree upon

    tree upon tree

To every last person Who came to

    the lot-

Who toasted with cocoa In small

    paper cups,

    Who promised the promise Of

    joy in their hearts---

And singing out carols, Drove off

    in the dark.

And when it was over One tree

    stood alone;

But no one was left there To give

    it a home.

The tree man put on his Red

    parka and hood

    And dragged the last Christmas

    tree Out to the woods.

He left the pine right by a stream

In the cold,So the wood's homeless creatures

    Could make it their home.

He smiled as he brushed off

    Some snow from his beard,

When out of the thicket A rein-

    deer appeared.

    He scratched that huge reindeer

    On top his huge head---

"It looks like we've Started up

    Christmas again!"

"There are miles more to travel,And much more to do!

Let's go home, my friend, And

    get started anew

He looked to the sky And heard a

    jingle bells sound---

And then, In a twinkling, That

    tree man wasn't around!
