Welcome to the second Issue of the Associated Students Council of Ocean Campus Newsletter CCSF Bookstores Looking to

Change: Privatization of the CCSF

Bookstore The CCSF Ocean Campus

Book store is going to be privatized by

a company called Follett. Sometime

after the start of the spring semester,

the CCSF Bookstores expect to

undergo a change in operations. Over

the past several years, the bookstores

have been losing money due to low

textbook sales. Reserves that the

bookstore had built up over the past

are now depleted and the bookstores

will not be able to absorb any more

years of losing money. The solution is

to hire an outside bookstore company

to operate the stores for City College.

Students

will experience little or no change

immediately but will see some added

enhancements and services during the

next year.

The decision to outsource bookstore

operations was made after a full year of

study and exploration of options. The

Associated Student Presidents and the

Student Trustees during the two

academic years participated in the

process to a greater extent than has

been done by any other college.

Student leaders and faculty leaders

participated in the research and in the

selection. They made sure that student

services would be maintained or

improved upon by this move.

You can expect a major remodeling of the

Ocean Campus Bookstores, continued

textbook sales at all Centers, expansion of

the textbook rental program and a much

larger assortment of merchandise beyond

textbooks and supplies. The proposed

vendor has agreed to expand bookstore

support for the AS Bookloan Program.

The District Board of Trustees will be

asked to authorize this change during

their December board meeting. If

approved, the changeover will occur in

late February. Current bookstore

employees will be able to remain and will

become employees of the new company

Registering for Classes and Preparing for Finals The Spring semester of 2013 is just around the corner. Now that 2012 is coming to an end, this is a great time to work hard, persevere, and finish this Fall semester strong! Students who have priority registration have had the privilege of registering in advance, but students who do not have the option of registering just yet, should still get familiar with the classes they would

like to take next semester to avoid having to be put on a waiting list. In order to find out when students are eligible to register for classes for the Spring 2013 semester, students can log in to their Web4 accounts, click on Student Services and Financial Aid and EOPS, then click on Registration, and then lastly click on Check your registration status. Students also have the option of checking out the schools’ class catalog at any given time before they are eligible to register. an

imitation singing contest called

Ultimate Copy King On December

7th, 2012. The competition is open to

all the City College students as well as

the public. We hope this will draw a

great variety of contestants to our

event which will only help make it

more successful.

All contestants will be judged in two

areas: performance skill and dress

code; contestants can dress up as their

favorite celebrity/group and sing the

song of their choice. Prize for winners

will be awarded to first, second and

third place respectively with $400 to

the 1st prize, $200 to the 2nd, and

$100 for the 3rd. In addition, the

audience will get to decide the winner

of our special popular prize, which

carries an award in amount of $100.

Associated Students Council: Christmas Screening of

Joeyeux Noel on Thursday,

December 6th, from 3:00-500

P.M. The event will be a

showing of Joyeux Noel, a

Christmas film about a truce

between soldiers fighting in

World War I. It will be shown

in Room 305 of the Library, on

the 3rd floor, Thursday,

December 6th from 3-5 PM.

STUDENTS PROTEST CONSOLIDATION OF DIVERSITY

DEPARTMENTS: Saving Ethnic Studies

Hundreds of Students

gathered at City College's

Ocean Campus to protest the

consolidation and the

eventual elimination of their

diversity departments. This

was was initiated to meet one

of the 14th accreditation requirements to save City College $2 million. This protest

occurred on November 15 at noon in the RAM Plaza, hundreds of students along

with teachers, community allies, and elected representatives, gathered at San

Francisco City College's Ocean Campus. The departments that are under threat of

consolidation are African American Studies, Latino/Latina Studies, Asian Studies,

Asian American Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Labor and Community Studies,

LGBT Studies, Philippine Studies, and Women's Studies. Additionally, The

Diversity Departments at City College are being threatened with consolidation

under the pretext of the accreditation imposition.

The autonomy of these programs was won through the hard-fought struggles of the

1960s to bring our marginalized histories out of isolation. The consolidation of

these departments would be a huge step backwards, undermining their importance

and paving the way for their elimination. Teachers would be fired, and

communities of color would again be denied representation. But students, faculty,

and staff mobilize, can save the Diversity Departments and build a historic

movement capable of stopping these racist cuts and oppressive attacks by making

the government financially bail out CCSF to prevent cuts to any classes and

programs.

Tuition has gone up dramatically in the past 3 years in the UC, CSU and

Community College Systems. This trend towards privatization and austerity is imposed on our public education systems. This will

not be tolerated by the students, teachers, staff, or the very diverse communities of San Francisco. "The college serves students of

all incomes, ages and ethnicities across the City," says Edgar Torres, chair of the Latin American and Latino/a Studies

Department. "We cannot allow San Franciscans to lose access to this vital resource that offers students of all backgrounds an

affordable quality education and so many innovative programs."

Changing: Are You Ready?

A huge battle is being waged right now as we

speak in California higher education. The

largest single campus Community College in

the nation is quietly shrinking right before our

eyes. Board members are being asked to zip it

up and respect the Accrediting Commission.

Administrators are being told their jobs and

workloads are a typical of a standard

California community college. Faculty

members are told to pack in students 35 plus

to a course. Staff experiences range from not

busy enough to covering three additional

employees’ duties.

Morale has never been lower at the college. Accreditation workgroups

have gone from discussion sessions where constituent groups get on the

same page to homework sessions where students are being asked to write

sections of the accreditation report. It is definitely time for students to

become more involved. That involvement must result in the development

of a Student Budget for Fiscal Year 2013-2014. If you are interested in

getting involved in a real strategy session to discuss prioritizing needs for

CCSF students, contact me, William Walker, your student trustee.

We need a dedicated group of students for the spring semester to put their

heads together and get an immense job done. Independent study academic

credit of up to four units can be arranged.

Hello CCSF Students,

It has been an honor to serve as your

President at Ocean Campus during this

challenging time at our college and for

public education in California. City College

of San Francisco is the largest Community

College in the nation. Please tell your

friends, family and community that City

College of San Francisco is open and

accredited! You can enroll now for the Spring semester, which starts on January 14th

still offering free noncredit classes!

There has been so much that has happened this Fall semester. Associated Students

Council at Ocean, our resource centers and the Inter Club Council have been very

active reaching out to students and hosting events. AS resource centers include: The

Family Resource Center, Veterans Resource Center, Students Supporting Students (S-

cubed), Guardian Scholars, Queer Resource Center, Voices of Immigrants

Demonstrating Achievement (VIDA), Each One Teach One, Homeless At Risk

Transitional Students Program (HARTS), Multicultural Resource Center (MCRC) and

Bookloan. These programs are run and funded entirely by students!

ASC Ocean hosted in November hosted a rally and film screenings at the Diego Rivera

Theater and Mission Campus of “Precious Knowledge” in support of Ethnic Studies

and our Diversity Departments. In September we hosted an International Solidarity

Forum that brought students from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada to talk about

challenges to public education globally. This election season we helped to get

Proposition A and Proposition 30 passed. These revenue measures passing means we

will have additional funding coming to our college. This means no cuts to Spring and

Summer classes for 2013 and $25 million in revenue for approximately eight years.

We are also actively involved in Accreditation workgroups and would like more

student input participation in these groups. We especially need student input in the

Participatory Governance and Student Services workgroups.

We will continue to keep reaching out to students and advocating for students City

College of San Francisco belongs to the community and we will ensure that it stays

that way!

Whole Foods Donates to CCSF

Whole Foods sales will be donating 5% of their revenue to City College of San Francisco. Shop on Wednesday, December 5th

to contribute to helping City College.

Each One Teach One (CCSF) is a student-teaching-student pilot program by the Associated Students. The program is funded by $5 student activities fee. Students can get paid to facilitate a workshop in a subject of their choice. The stipend is $500 (subject to approval by E1T1 Committee and Student Activities). Students who are taking E1T1 workshop can earn actual school credit units under Independent Studies (from 0.5unit to 3.0units). E1T1 is open to International/Non-Work Study students too. My Each One Teach One Workshop: "Out The Box-Raw Talk” is to bring awareness to society and anyone else about the invisible people (formerly incarcerated) that are in school changing their lives and how they are doing it.
