December 31, 2017 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
Mass Intentions
My Dear Family of Faith,
I pray that your Christmas celebrations of the Nativity
of our Lord have been filled with great joy. Thank you so much
to everyone who sent or delivered cookies, candy, or gifts to me
and the parish staff. We have been enjoying them! Thank you
for your thoughtfulness!
The Christmas season continues this weekend as we
celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Holy Family perfectly models
the love and dedication God wills for all families. Even amidst their poverty and trials,
they trusted in God's plan and remained faithful to His will. On Monday we celebrate the
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Because it falls on a Monday, it is not a
Holy Day of Obligation this year. However, it is still a very important day in the
Church's calendar, so we will have Holy Mass at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 31, and
8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 1. What a beautiful and fitting way to continue the Christ-
mas celebration as we begin the new calendar year.
Secondly, as I mentioned in the December 17 bulletin, we will be conducting a
planning study, which is a continuation of a process that helped produce our parish mas-
ter plan prior to our Forward in Faith campaign. Now, as that campaign enters its final
months, we will be seeking your input before making any decisions regarding the long-
range plan for Immaculate Heart of Mary. Beginning this week, The Steier Group devel-
opment firm, will begin to conduct a comprehensive survey of the entire parish. They
will then compile this information and present it to our parish leadership.
In the coming days, all registered parishioners and non-parishioner school fami-
lies will be asked to share your thoughts regarding our needs, as well as determine the
feasibility of conducting a major fundraising effort. Your feedback will enable us to de-
termine potential support for the master plan projects. If we, as a faith community,
choose to move forward, the planning study will also provide us with information to
identify prospective campaign leaders and to establish a realistic campaign goal. At that
time, we will make an informed decision regarding the implementation of our master
plan.
I believe that this process is extremely important, and I encourage each and eve-
ry parish and school family to participate. Your input is valuable as we plan for the fu-
ture of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Parish.
God Bless,

Stewardship Reflection for Dec. 31, 2017 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
“...as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.”
Colossians 3:13
Forgiveness – one of the hardest things for people to do.
It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry
with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Fam-
ily, take this opportunity to act in Stewardship and give
the gift of forgiveness to someone - maybe someone in
your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neigh-
bor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text some-
one right now.

World Day of Peace - January 1
The World
Day of Peace is held
on January 1, the
Solemnity of Mary,
Mother of God in the
Catholic Church.
The day was first ob-
served on January
1,1968.
World Day of Peace often has been an occasion on which
the Popes made magisterial declarations of social doc-
trine. The below paragraph is from the message of His
Holiness Pope Francis For the Celebration of the 51st
World Day of Peace - January 1, 2018:
"Peace to all people and to all nations on earth! Peace,
which the angels proclaimed to the shepherds on Christ-
mas night, is a profound aspiration for everyone, for each
individual and all peoples, and especially for those who
most keenly suffer its absence. Among these whom I con-
stantly keep in my thoughts and prayers, I would once
again mention the over 250 million migrants worldwide,
of whom 22.5 million are refugees. Pope Benedict XVI,
my beloved predecessor, spoke of them as 'men and
women, children, young and elderly people, who are
searching for somewhere to live in peace.' In a spirit of
compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and
hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty
and environmental degradation to leave their home-
lands."

Epiphany House Blessing
There is an ancient custom
among Christians to do a house
blessing on Epiphany, recalling
the visit of the Magi. It is done
on the 12th day of Christmas.
The 12th day of Christmas is
January 6; however, Epiphany is
celebrated on the Sunday after the Feast of the Holy Fam-
ily. This year we will celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord
on January 7.
The custom of blessing homes on this day seems to be
linked to the Gospel: “and on entering the house they saw
the child with Mary, his mother. They prostrated them-
selves and did Him homage.” Mt. 2:11a, b
As part of the blessing, the initials of the traditional
names of the Magi: Gaspar (or Caspar), Melchior, and
Balthasar, are inscribed and connected with crosses in
white chalk on the inside door frame. The numerals of the
current year serve as bookends. This year you would
write: 20+G+M+B+18
***There will be blessed chalk available on the weekend
of the Epiphany in the narthex of the church.
TRADITIONAL HOME BLESSING
(Gather your family at your front door)
OPENING PRAYER:
“In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through Him,
and without Him nothing came to be.”
~John 1:1-3a
“And the Word became flesh
and made His dwelling among us,
and we saw His glory,
the glory as of the Father's only Son,
full of grace and truth.” ~John 1:14
PRAY: May God bless all those who enter and leave this
house.
Make the Sign of the Cross with holy water on
the doorway. Write the following in chalk on the lintel
(header) of the door frame: 20+G+M+B+18
Process to the other rooms of the house. Make the Sign
of the Cross. Sprinkle holy water as you enter each room.
Pray in each room. For example: “May this bedroom be a
quiet place of rest...” End with a song: possibly “We
Three Kings”
