Polar Express Experience Delights Local Families

What a delightful evening was had by 200 + individuals Saturday December 8.

Thanks to your contributions and the work of the Outreach committee, 55 children

in 11 elementary schools were chosen randomly to receive four tickets to see The

Polar Express at The Midland Theater. Some children invited friends, others invited

their family and the winners could be identified by the big smiles on their faces. The

parent of one winner called her friend whose son won last year. The friend told her,

“It was a wonderful lifetime experience for our son. Make sure you go to the church

for cookies and hot chocolate. The church

made it so fun”. Tickets were picked up at our

church between 4:30 and 7:00, greeted and

welcomed by Todd and Isabelle with cookies

and hot chocolate adding to their evening

served by Tom and Nancy LeBlanc, Mary Beth

and Weldon Mathews and Dan McKay. Doug

Kullman was our train engineer with authentic

cap and bandanas distributing the tickets. The

model train was running, thanks to Bob and

Amy Mader, and pictures were taken by Doug Crawford, assisted by Connie

Johnson, and will be delivered to each school to be distributed to the winners in the

New Year. The highlight for many was Don Johnson dressed in Sally Henry’s Dad’s B

and O Railroad conductor uniform, complete with beautiful brass B&O buttons and

cap. He looked like he was ready to board them on the Polar Express any moment!

The first little kindergartner to take a picture with his family and Don, turned to

Don, and one foot away from him, continued to greet

him with wave upon wave! Most of the families and

friends arrived at 4:30 and stayed, relaxing in our dining

room, library and gym (we had an overflow!) All were

invited to our Christmas Eve services and will get an

invitation to worship with us. By 6:00 many were

leaving to see

Santa at the

Midland and by

6:50 folks had all

taken their seats

at the theater.

We received so many words of appreciation.

It was such a fun evening for the participants

and the volunteers!

From the Office … Monthly newsletter published the last Sunday of the month with article deadline the Tuesday before.

CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL UPDATE!

NOTE change for 2019! Family worship Sunday will be the 1st Sunday of each month; children will remain with their families for the entire service on that day. When Sunday school is in session, we ask

that all children go to the sanctuary and share the first part of the worship service with their family. (This will allow teachers to participate in the first part of the service in other ways.) Class participants will then exit with their teacher

following the Children’s Message.

JANUARY’S SCHEDULE -

1/6 – Communion Sunday, Family Worship Sunday. Children will stay in the sanctuary and learn first-hand about our worship traditions and service, so there is no separate Sunday school class. (The Nursery is available every

Sunday for children from infancy through pre-school-age.)

1/13, 1/20, 1/27 - Elementary students dismissed to class following the

Children’s Moment.

A note from your Deacons….

Your Deacons celebrated with each home bound member of our church

this month delivering a gift, reminding them of God’s love and that of their

church family. We welcomed the new Deacons Judy Tuttle, Diann Priest and Tom

Henry while being sad to have Kathy Fickes, Shari Fronckel and Charlie Wells leave us

…. we hope only temporarily! As John Johnson practices, once a Deacon, always a

Deacon. We look forward to the coming year and the opportunities you will provide us

to serve the members of our church. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New

Year!

WHY FAIR TRADE?

In conventional trade the producer generally receives only 1-5% of the retail price that the consumer pays, where as in Fair Trade the producer usually gets 20-45%. This is a large difference for the producer and means they can not just get by but also invest in their future. Good products - at a good

price – for a good cause!

Stock Items of Breakfast Blend Coffee (beans, ground, or K-cups), and Chocolate Bars are available during Fellowship Time the first Sunday of each month. Or you can contact Ruth or John Cooper any time for a special delivery.

The Sacrament of Communion will be observed on January 6th and the first Sunday of the month for 2019. If you know a shut-in who might like to have communion delivered to them at their home that week, please contact the church office or a Deacon.

From the Finance Office ...

The 2018 statements will be mailed soon. Please look them over closely. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your statement, please call Doug in the Finance Office at 740-349-8691. If there is a check missing, please have the check number and date ready before calling. You may also send a note via e-mail. Doug’s office e-mail is [email protected]

Thank you to Pastor Todd for leading our Advent in Narnia discussions during this special season – and for bringing us Turkish Delight! Todd is a great teacher – watch for and make it a point to participate in his next class; you’ll be glad

you did!

After taking the week between holidays off, the adult class will resume on January 6. First, we will finish up the “Christian Hope” study. The final lesson, “Living Hope in Church and World” spotlights our church’s sacraments. The focus on communion is especially timely as we will be sharing the Eucharist in worship that same

morning.

A new study will begin January 13: “The Prophets Still Speak.” This is another offering from the “Being Reformed” curriculum published by our denomination. Come hear what Amos, Micah, and Isaiah

may be saying to us today.

Everyone is always welcome! You don’t have to come every week! Please join us any time

you can.

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under

heaven. Ecclesiates 3:1

When I think back 12 ½ years, this was to be a pre-retirement job, part-time, using the skills I’ve learned over the years to benefit you and the church. Little did I realize then how much I would learn and how much a part of you I would become. I thoroughly enjoy my job and all that it entails, staying in touch with you via emails, phone calls, and my favorite, in prayer. I have many cheerleaders who can never be forgotten or replaced. I’ve made friends that I believe will continue to be a part of my life, wherever I am. The church has been my much-needed “happy place” during difficult times. After working many years, I am looking forward to retirement, being with my husband and remembering each day to count my blessings and laugh!

I WILL MISS YOU!

Vision Statement

We, the congregation of Second

Presbyterian Church accept that

we have been called to love,

serve and worship God; and to

proclaim the good news of our

Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As a beacon of Christ serving

our community, we joyfully

pledge to use our God-given

gifts of time, talent and treasure

to meet the spiritual and physi-

cal needs of all people. We

exist by the grace of God, and

will respond each day to His

love by loving one another with

the kindness, humility and gen-

tleness of Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite verses from the Bible is Psalm 118:24; “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Whenever I need to think of a quick scripture to put my head straight for the day, this is the verse that will pop into my mind. It is such a simple idea, remembering that each day is a gift from God and choosing to be grateful for that and to find joy within it.

Imagine how different our world could be if every one of us was able to live this verse out each day. Imagine the impact it could have on our attitudes. Imagine how it could influence the way we treat our families, friends, and neighbors. Imagine how it would help us when we are going through difficult times.

That is just the thing, rejoicing and being glad for each day does not mean that we can never be sad, or frustrated, or down. Instead it means that we can find a reason to rejoice and be glad even when we are going through difficult times and struggling to find joy in the circumstances of our lives. Our joy or our gladness as Christians comes, not because nothing bad ever happens to us or because we ignore those difficult things, but rather because we know that we have a God who is with us through it all. In fact, if you look just a few verses back in this Psalm to verse 21, you will see that motivation for the psalmist rejoicing is the knowledge that God is their salvation. We too can rejoice and be glad knowing that God has offered us salvation through the love of Jesus Christ.

Sisters and brothers in Christ, let’s work together to try to approach each day in this new year with a Psalm 118:24 attitude. An attitude of gratitude and joy no matter what each new day brings, knowing that God is with us through it all. And as we do, let’s spread that joy and gladness to the ends of the earth.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Todd.
