More than 30 travel agents from the region converged at the Warwick Fiji Resort & Spa to discuss ways in which Fiji can be promoted in the international tourism market. Travel agents from New Zealand and Australian recorded the biggest number to take part in the workshop in Sigatoka. The Australian Mega and Fiji Matai consisted of travel agents from Australia and New Zealand who promote local properties in their own countries. “The main purpose of having this kind of get together is just so that these travel agents can get a hands-on experience,” public relations manager Loata Koroi said. “So when they return to their own countries, they can promote our island in a better way because they have witnessed what Fiji is like.” The travel agents’ visit was made possible through Tourism Fiji who usually organises events like these to boost the countries tourism industry. With the booming numbers in tourism arrivals, Fiji is on a new journey where tourists and tourism is closely monitored because it is seen as a major revenue earner for the country. “Warwick alone hosted 30 families for

the month of November;; Naviti Resort had about 10,” Ms Koroi said. “Apart from the travel agents we have hosted conference groups too.” To promote a safer and more welcoming Fiji, Warwick Fiji has taken into consideration the accommodation, meals and other services that can be part of tour package deals for tourists. It is even noted that there was an increase in visitor arrivals since June, with the number standing at 58,614 - an increase of 23.8 per cent compared to November last year.

TRAVEL AGENTS DISCUSS TOURISM

The Immigration Department has in its custody a suspected fraudster who reportedly owes overseas interests $1.2 million. The man, who arrived in the country as Frans Philp De vol from Honduras in 2009, holds three other passports. All passports;; two Costa Rican and one from Vanuatu, contains different personal details and they were also used to travel to other countries like New Zealand. Other names he has allegedly used are Franz Anton Von-Hapsburg and Frans Hapsburg. The suspect is also reported to have owed locals $69,000, with some cases yet to be reported. While investigations have been handed to the police, Immigration director Major Nemani Vuniwaqa said the suspect’s alleged acts came to light when they conducted an investigation on how he had been entering the country using different passports. “He was supposed to have been deported after his arrest last Friday, but the people whom he owed money to had requested that he be held back to pay his debts,” Major Vuniwaqa said. “We are also keeping him in custody to prevent him from obtaining more money

from locals. “He is believed to have owed more locally and offshore.” When questioned, the suspect had claimed that he was an investor and was in the country to build a hotel. He told other people that he owned a scuba diving business in Fiji. “If he was an investor then he should have followed the right procedures and liaised with the Fiji Islands Trade and Investment Bureau (FITIB),” Major Vuniwaqa said.

owns a hotel in the Bahamas.” The suspect has given the Immigration Department until December 18 to extract money offshore to pay off his debts, including the $30,000 he owes his landlord for the apartment he rented. The communication process is done under strict supervision. Major Vuniwaqa said the Vanuatu Police have also issued a warrant for his arrest for related matters. Meanwhile, Major Vuniwaqa said those who breached the immigration laws would be taken to task. To those who know the suspect, Major Vuniwaqa is calling on them to come forward and help with their investigations. The suspect also claims he has an adopted son in Fiji.

The Value Added Tax (VAT) will increase by 2.5 percent, which will come into effect January 1, 2011. The increase is from 12.5 percent in 2010 to 15 percent in 2011. Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs

Mr Jitoko Tikolevu said the increase is expected to rake in revenue of about $80 million. He also added that food items at zero VAT would remain the same. “Whatever food items has zero VAT will

remain zero and everything else is across the board including pharmaceutical as well,” he added. The Tourist VAT Refund Scheme incentive will be made attractive with amendments to allow tourists to claim refunds for shopping in any number of days. “ ‘One day’ will be deleted and replaced with ‘many days’.”In addition the VAT exemption status would be provided to the Fishing Industry.“The VAT decree will be amended to

processors.”“A levy of $350 per tonne will be imposed on Fish that is off-loaded for trans shipment, without any value adding.”.The increase in VAT is a revenue measure the government has implemented.Additional revenue is also expected from a capital gains tax and which altogether is expected generate an additional $200m in revenue for 2011.“So I think those two major initiatives will get about $80m for government and $5 to $10m for capital gains tax and you can notice there is a lot of reduction in duty as well but that is by far and large $200m increase from revenue for this year and 2011,” Mr Tikolevu said.“So that is a big challenge for us so we are looking forward to that challenge.”FIRCA received a grant allocation of $34 for operating expenses and a $3m capital grant.“We are looking in-house in terms of capacity building, looking at the skills of our own people and we have come up with a lot of initiatives as well in terms of e-lodgment, e-payment to be launched before year end, so just in line with government’s e-initiative of the government – it’s costing money but at the same time facilitating tax payers.”

Preventing Fading and Color BleedingWe all have had that favorite dark colored shirt that fades and ends up with a “frost” of fade on it. Next time you buy dark (or bright) colored clothing, set the color by soaking the garment for an hour in a mix of 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 tablespoon of salt and 1/2 gallon of water. If the rinse water shows color after an hour, repeat the process. Use this technique only for single-colored items, because multi-colored items may bleed into each other. Multicolored items will likely need to be dry-cleaned. The clothing will still fade, but after many more washes. This will also prevent already laundered items from fading even more.Washing WhitesHot water works the best, since your detergent will dissolve and work the most effectively at this temperature. Water rinses equally well at any temperature, however, so be sure to rinse all your clothes using cold water to save on hot water. If your clothes are not particularly soiled, you could probably get away with using hot water every second or third washing to save on hot water as well. Be sure to always follow the washing directions given on the label of your clothes for best results.

Restore Black Color with CoffeeTo answer your question, you can refresh your black clothes by adding bluing, or strong coffee, or tea(2 cups) to the rinse water. They should return to their original dark black state. To prevent future fading, wash them in cold water, with Ivory Flakes plus only a small amount of detergent.Scuff Mark Removal from ShoesHow you remove the scuff marks on your shoes depends on the fabric the shoes are made out of. If they are leather, you can remove the scuffs by rubbing the scuff with non-gel toothpaste, rinse, wipe and let dry. If they are vinyl or plastic, you can remove the marks by rubbing them with a pencil eraser and if that doesn’t work, try a non-gel toothpaste and toothbrush or try

can scrub them using upholstery cleaner, cleanser or a non-gel toothpaste. Air dry.Wax Removal from TableclothTo get candle wax off your tablecloth, put a plain paper bag over the spot, and press with a warm (not hot) iron. Continue this, using fresh pieces of paper until all the wax is absorbed. If some of the dye has seeped into the fabric of your tablecloth and remains after removing the wax, try laundering with a color-safe bleach.

John 17:3 “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”What prevents us from knowing God personally?Man is SINFUL and SEPARATED from God, so we cannot know Him personally or experience His loveRomans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death” [spiritual separation from God].Romans 8:6-8 “The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.”

A great gulf separates man from God. Man is continually trying to reach God and establish a personal relationship with Him through human efforts, such as living a good life, philosophy, or religion. But he inevitably fails. The third principle explains the only way to bridge this gulf...Jesus Christ is God’s ONLY provision for man’s sin. Through him alone we can know God personally and experience God’s love Romans 5:8 “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”1 Corinthians 15:3-6 “Christ died for our sins... he was buried... he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures... he appeared to Peter, then to the twelve.

hundred...”John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”God has bridged the gulf that separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins. But it is not enough just to know these truths...

We must individually RECEIVE Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior;; then we can know God personally and experience His loveJohn 1:12 “As many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name.”Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith. This does not depend on anything you have achieved, it is the free gift of God;; and because it is not earned no one can boast about it.”Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self (a spirit of repentance) and trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive us of our sins and make us what he wants us to be. Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he died on the cross for our sins is not enough. Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. We receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of our will.Jesus Christ is waiting for an invitation to come in to your life. In fact, he says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock;; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in” (Revelation 3:20).Perhaps you can sense Christ knocking at

the door of your heart. You can invite him in by faith right now. God knows your heart so it doesn’t matter exactly what words you use. Here’s a suggested prayer:Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life to you and ask you to come in as my Savior and Lord. Take control of my life. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be.If this prayer expresses the desire of your heart, pray it right now and Jesus Christ will come into your life just as he has promised. Once you invite Christ into your life, he promises to never leave you.Hebrew 13:5 “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you;; never will I forsake you.’”To know God personally is the greatest decision you will ever make – Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you and he is always there 24/7 for HIS children – May God richly bless you!

How can I ... prevent SIDS?

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the “sudden death of an infant under one year of age that remains unexplained after a complete investigation, which includes an autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the symptoms or illnesses the infant had prior to dying and any other pertinent medical history.” Unfortunately, there is no 100% way to prevent SIDS, but there are steps you can take to reduce your infant’s risk of SIDS.It most commonly occurs between the ages of 1 and 4 months. Fortunately, the incidence of SIDS has decreased dramatically in recent years. This has been thought to be secondary to the Back to Sleep campaign that instructs parents to put their infants to sleep on their backs and not their side or stomachs. The most important thing that you can do to reduce the risk of SIDS is to put your baby to sleep on his back (sleeping on his side is not as safe, especially if he can roll over onto his stomach) and never put him down alone on a waterbed, bean bag, or soft blanket that can cover his face and cause choking. Also make sure that daycare personal or baby-sitters also know to put your baby to sleep on his back.Another risk factor for SIDS may be thermal stress or getting overheated. To avoid this you should provide your infant

with a comfortable room temperature that isn’t too warm or hot and avoid excessive bedclothes, covering the head and too much bundling. While bed sharing may not increase the risk of SIDS, it is also not thought to be

babies sleep in a ‘separate but proximate sleeping environment’ such as a nearby crib, cradle, or bassinet. Co sleeping and bed sharing is no longer recommended.Exposure to second hand smoke is a

enough to just smoke outside the house. Smoking during pregnancy should also be avoided, since that is another risk factor that can raise a baby’s risk for SIDS.Lastly, breastfeeding is thought to be protective against SIDS.How do I ... take my baby’s temperature? While there are many acceptable ways to take your child’s temperature, you should use a rectal thermometer if you think that your baby has a fever. To take

the thermometer and shake it until it is reading below 96 degrees F. Next, rub a small amount of lubricant on its tip and while your baby is lying down, hold one

just above his buttocks. Now gently insert the thermometer into his anus about 1/2 to 1 inch. Wait for two minutes and then remove the thermometer and slowly roll it until you are able to see the end of the mercury column, which is your baby’s temperature. For infants under three months of age, a fever is considered to be a temperature over 100.4 degrees F (call your doctor immediately!). How do I ... feed my baby? You should always hold your baby during a feeding. Even when he is older and able to hold the bottle on his own, you should continue to hold him and avoid propping the bottle during feedings. Also, hold the bottle so that the tip is always

baby from swallowing a lot of air.Burping your baby every few ounces can prevent stomach distention and discomfort.

Later you can get on more of a schedule of feedings every three to four hours.

NEWBORN PARENTING TIPS

What it looks like: Red welt that throbs with pain, then settles into a localized ache that lasts a few days. Honeybee’s stinger stays in the skin pumping venom for up to 20 minutes;; bumblebee retains its stinger. What to do: Remove honeybee’s barbed

or scraping motion using the edge of a credit card. Do not pull, pluck or pinch the stinger, which can squeeze additional

venom into the wound. Wash site and treat with calamine lotion or a paste of baking soda and water.See a doctor: If you notice a quickly spreading rash or your child reports generalized itching or symptoms like weakness, headache,

or swallowing, you may be dealing with anaphylactic shock. Use EpiPen in the thigh muscle and call 911.

Nadi Masters Association President Mohammed Ali echoes the same sentiment, adding more similar awards would be given to district members who have worked hard over the years to take Nadi where it is today locally and in Fiji. “We are proud to have Sattar as our honorary member,” said Ali.Nadi Soccer team manager Subarmani Reddy said Sattar is undoubtedly the most recognizable administrator in Nadi’s history.

only safe way to deliver them

DOCTORS are being trained in how to deliver super-sized babies as the country’s obesity epidemic worsens. The large newborns - most born to obese and overweight mothers - are so big their shoulders are becoming stuck during labour. In extreme cases doctors have to break their collarbones to free them and save their lives. One in four Australian women is obese

when they become pregnant, increasing health risks for both mother and baby.In Melbourne, Royal Women’s Hospital maternity services director Assoc Prof Louise Kornman said broken bones occurred in busy hospitals a couple of times a year.“I would imagine this will gradually increase as the size of mothers having babies increases,” she told the media. But doctors in Queensland say the shock procedure is carried out on up to 1000 infants across the state.Brisbane obstetrician Dr Gino Pecoraro, president of the Australian Medical Association Queensland, said an increasing number of cases meant junior doctors now took part in regular mock-up trials. He said obese and overweight women were more likely to give birth to babies over 4kg, with a greater risk of the babies becoming stuck in a condition known as shoulder dystocia.

It comes as Queensland is in the grip of an obesity epidemic, with almost half of expectant mothers now overweight or obese, and one in four classed as obese. It is estimated shoulder dystocia affects up to 1.5 per cent of all babies with a birth weight of 2.5kg (5 pounds 8 ounces). This incidence increases to around 10 per cent in babies weighing more than 4kg (8 pounds 13 ounces) and to 22.6 per cent in babies bigger than 4.5kg (9 pounds 14 ounces.)Of the 66,097 babies born in Queensland last year, 12 per cent weighed over 4kg and

it is estimated around 960 suffered shoulder dystocia at birth. After delivery the injured newborn is unable to move its arm until the bone heals, which can take weeks.Dr Pecoraro said despite the risks it was better to let an obese woman try and labour naturally rather than carrying out an elective caesarean.Meanwhile, thousands of pregnant women are refusing to give up smoking despite an increasing number of Queenslanders abandoning cigarettes.

BEAUTY TRENDS AND TIPS

2011 RAM 2500 HEAVY DUTY

The Dodge Ram changed the truck world in 1994 when it showed that full-size pickups could be made to resemble something other than a cinder block. Like its half-ton brother, the heavy-duty 3/4-ton Dodge Ram 2500 boasted a muscular, rugged look that took heavy inspiration from

fender design and prominent grille. This new look clearly resonated with America’s truck-buying public, because Ram sales immediately doubled with the new model and would eventually double once again by 1999. Now in its third generation since the styling rebirth, the Ram has an even more

muscular body and engine lineup, plus a versatile selection of cab styles. In addition to the regular cab, there’s a four-door Crew Cab (replacing the long-running Quad Cab) and a Mega Cab that easily lives up

For hard-core hauling and towing duties, the Dodge Ram 2500 comes standard with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8, while the available Cummins turbodiesel is capable of more than 600 pound-feet of torque. Of course, like other heavy-duty pickup trucks, the Ram 2500 also features a stiffened suspension and a more rugged frame. This Dodge’s combination of big-rig styling and muscle has rightfully earned it a loyal

following among serious truck drivers.Current Dodge Ram 2500The Dodge Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup is available with two-wheel or four-wheel drive and comes in a variety of body styles

Crew Cab (replacing the previous model’s Quad Cab) and Mega Cab (really big crew cab) comprise the body styles. The Mega Cab is only available with the short bed, while the regular cab is only equipped with the long bed. The Crew Cab is offered with either.Trim levels consist of the basic ST, the volume-selling SLT and the luxurious Laramie. Higher trim levels offer standard and optional niceties like dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, Bluetooth and a hard-drive-based navigation system. Off-road-ready packages include the TRX and the Quad-Cab-only Power Wagon.Standard on all Ram 2500 trucks is a 5.7-liter V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque. This hefty power

transmission. For enhanced towing capability, there’s a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel producing 350 horses and 650 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.Compared to the previous Ram 2500,

the current model has a bigger, forward-leaning grille and a more prominently bulging hood. Inside, there’s a sharper design backed by good-quality materials, similar to the recently redone Ram 1500. Additionally, the previous generation’s Quad Cab has been replaced by the roomier Crew Cab. Comfort also sees marked improvements thanks to a retuned suspension and hydraulic cab-to-frame mounts. In reviews of the Dodge Ram 2500, we’ve found it to be a very capable heavy-duty pickup truck. We’re fond of its powerful engine lineup, wide range of body styles and compliant highway ride. We also appreciate the new Crew Cab model, which is an improvement on the relatively cramped Quad Cab from the previous-generation truck. But redesigned heavy-duty trucks from Ford and GM have also debuted fairly recently, so our recommendation is to test-drive the different offerings before
