Just ahead for more celebrations, the up-coming next, is our annual Christmas Party, on Dec.9, we hope to see as many as possi-ble of you at this event. The planning for our Heritage Day in Feb-ruary is going well, but we are hoping for more vendor to take part. If you are in contact or have any knowledge of some who would like to join, let us know. Solskinn Book Group News

Members of the lodge book group have a nice sur-prise from Dottie Bessares. She shared an Icelandic Tradition. She brought a wrapped book with a snack and a bag of tea for each of use to enjoy on Christ-mas Eve. I haven’t opened my book gift yet. It is waiting for Christmas Eve. This is a great idea to share with your family.

Jólabókaflóð From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jólabókaflóðið (Icelandic for "Yule book flood") is the annual release of new books in Iceland occur-ring in the months before Christmas,[1] a national publishing tradition for new titles. Newly published books are listed in a yearly compi-lation called bókatíðindi ("book news") that is dis-tributed to all households for free; the total number of new books published was about 800 in 2007[2] and 760 in 2008.[3] A further ramification of the cus-tom stems from both Iceland's centuries-long liter-ary tradition, and strict WWII currency restrictions which limited the amount of imported giftware. Given that restrictions on imported paper were more lenient than on other products, books became a massively popular Christmas gift, and indeed the default gift, and thus the custom was established for the settling in and of the reading of said books.[4]

Helping Hands to Members

Solskinn Lodge members donated $200 in October to the Helping Hands to Members fund within the

Sons of Nor-way Founda-tion. The Helping Hands to

Members Grant is a grant of up to $1000 to Sons of Norway members whose home has been significant-ly damaged and is deemed unlivable for a period of time due to a natural dis-aster such as a flood, tor-nado, hurricane, or wild-fire. This particular grant

program was started after the Red River flooding in the upper Midwest. Our lodge members were gen-erous as we considered the recent horrendous wild-fires in California. Cur-rently, we are aware of three members’ homes that were destroyed in the fires. This grant is not in-surance, but will provide assistance with immediate needs of a displaced fami-ly. A simple application is required to request the grant. Thank-you Solskinn members for your help in supporting the Helping Hands to Members grants. Submitted by Nancy Madson

The Norwegian Santa Claus

First up folks, sorry to say but, there's no such thing as Santa Claus! But seri-ously, the real Santa Claus lives in Rovaniemi, Finland. The Santa Claus Village tells the story as follows: “When Santa Claus declared Rovanie-mi as his hometown, he told how his home at Ear Mountain (Korvatunturi) was revealed at the beginning of the last century and how this closely guarded secret spread the world over. In order to retain the privacy of his secret location, the Elf folk decided to build a place where Santa could meet people from near and far at the Northern Arctic Circle.”

But despite his home being so close, Santa Claus is not the most common Christmas icon here in Norway.

That honour goes to julenisse. A crea-tion from Scandinavian folklore, a nisse (tomte in Sweden) is a short creature with a long white beard and a red hat. Julenisse means the gift-

bearing nisse at Christmas time. Sound familiar?

Christmas Eve

I grew up with 25th December as the focal point of Christmas, but here in Norway, the focal point is 24th De-cember. Julaften (Christmas Eve) is the day when presents are exchanged and the whole family gets together for the main Christmas meal. Christmas Day is a much quieter affair and often quite private.

Julebord

Ah, the good old fashioned Christmas party! Every company, school, sports club and social group hold their own julebord (literally Christmas table) and partners are usually welcome, meaning most Norwegians will attend at least two, possibly many more, during De-cember.

These communal gatherings are an important part of Norwegian culture and traditional food is often served. Large amounts of alcohol are con-sumed and normally followed up with a late-night party (with the exception of school julebords of course!)

The food Norwegians eat at Christ-

mas is largely defined by where they come from, just like the English eat turkey whereas Americans tend to-wards ham, roast beef, or goose.

Perhaps the most common Christmas dish is ribbe, seasoned pork belly served with sauerkraut and redcurrant sauce. Pinekjøtt, mutton ribs, is popu-lar in the western counties, as is cod, while lutefisk is commonly eaten in the run-up to Christmas. Christmas drinks In the run-up to the festive period, most breweries re-lease juleøl,Christmas versions of their beers, commonly darker and spicier than their regular brews. Norwegian magazine Klikk rated Trondheim's own Dahls Juleøl the best of 2014, closely followed by Tuborgs, Grans and Ringn es. Skål! For those who don't drink alcohol, most breweries also produce julebrus, a sweet soda, loved by Norwegians young and old. If you want to amuse yourself at this time of year, just tell a Norwegian from Bergen that Lillehammer's julebrus is the best you've ever tasted. Sit back and watch the fireworks.
