If you answered “yes,” this is the volunteer job for you! We need a project manager (from January 31, 2019-December 31, 2019—approximately 5 hours/week) to coordinate volunteers to proofread transcripts of RMPBS productions that have been digitized by the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB). The transcripts are posted on the AAPB website, so volunteers can do the proofreading from the comfort of their own homes! For every transcription completed, the AAPB will digitize FOR FREE other RMPBS programs ensuring that programming from RMPBS will have a lasting presence nationally. (RMPBS cannot digitize all its productions because it is cost prohibitive.) Digitizing productions is the only way to ensure that these programs will be preserved for future generations. Currently, RMPBS has 94 productions posted on December 2018 Happy Holidays ! Volunteers Do It All! Thanks go to all the RMPBS and KUVO volunteers for their service. Early each month, the Volunteer Bulletin arrives by email and is also posted at www.rmpbs.org/volunteer. It delivers news, volunteer opportunities and volunteer appreciation. AAPB website and more will be added. (For more information on the AAPB, visit www.americanarchive.org ) The project manager will be trained by RMPBS staff and volunteer and then will, in turn, train other volunteers. Skills required include: 1) strong organizational skills; 2) strong computer skills especially related to internet use and experience with software programs; 3) strong training skills; 4) willingness to work with fellow volunteers. For more detailed information and a job description, please contact Susan Barber [email protected] . Volunteer and make a difference! ATTENTION ALL KUVO & RMPBS Volunteers!!! We Need Your Help! Recently, the Federal Communications Commission determined that nearly 1000 TV stations across the country must change frequencies to make room for the internet carriers. Rocky Mountain PBS, and our viewers who watch our programming via antenna, will potentially be impacted.

As we prepare for this we intend to staff a phone bank to field call from viewers who have questions or require assistance about how to re-scan their television sets. Volunteers who staff the phone banks will have a script and instructions to follow. We have been given the transition window end of December/beginning of January and may not have a specific date until closer to that window, but we are asking for volunteers who would be interested in staffing the phone bank. At this time, we need volunteers to contact us NOW to indicate availability and interest in helping us out. Please email Susan Barber [email protected] to indicate your availability on weekends (morning, afternoon, evenings) and weekdays (morning, afternoon, evenings) during that December window (1-21). As the date draws nearer and as RMPBS has a clearer picture of when the transition will occur, we will be directly in touch with volunteers regarding available shifts. Thank you in advance for your help! Let’s get crafty! Create Centerpieces for the Denver Screening Event (Jan. 3) of Episode 1 of Victoria Enter to win a Victoria inspired gift basket! Create a center piece to be displayed on a table at the screening of Victoria (episode 1) on January 3 at RMPBS. We will number the centerpieces anonymously, and the guests will vote for their favorite. Once the people’s choice votes are tallied, the winner will take home the prize! All persons submitting a centerpiece will have a reserved seat at the screening so that they may enjoy the evening; parking is free on the South side of the building. Parameters: The centerpiece must be made by you, using all of your crafty closet awesomeness. The centerpiece should contain at least one tea cup or tea pot (or both!). Tip: Think about visiting a thrift store. The centerpiece should not be larger than 1’x1’x1’. That’s it! Otherwise, get creative, and most of all, have some whimsical fun! If interested, please contact Brooke Collins, Community Engagement Coordinator, to register and gather more info. 303.620.5748. [email protected] Join a State-Wide Virtual Volunteer Team and Make a Difference for RMPBS: Proofread RMPBS Transcriptions on the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) Website (work from home!) Calling volunteers and staff at RMPBS (Denver) and KUVO: Submit your nomination for the annual “From the Heart” awards! Calling on volunteers and staff at the RMPBS (Denver) station and KUVO to nominate a very special volunteer and/or a special Denver staff member—those folks whom you have observed giving exceptional and cheerful service to the Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO community. They exceed expectations and often work quietly out of the limelight. You may see these people, perhaps on a daily basis or maybe during a special event or project working quietly and efficiently with no thought of reward or accolade. The nomination deadline is Monday, January 18, 2019. The nominations need not be elegantly written, just heartfelt. You will be reminded again in early January of the deadline. However, we’d appreciate your submitting nominations early while the idea is in your mind. The brief and simple nomination form is available online at www.rmpbs.org/heart or contact Susan Barber at [email protected]. Past recipients are listed below. While these individuals are no longer eligible for consideration, please use them as an example of what behavior exemplifies “From the Heart”. Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 14, 2019 and join in celebrating the 23rd consecutive year of honoring volunteers and staff members who have given unselfishly of time and energy to support Rocky Mountain PBS (Denver) or KUVO. The awards are scheduled to be presented in the Teleconference room at the Denver RMPBS station, 1089 Bannock Street on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 3–4pm. Welcome Hillary Daniels—New Employee Rocky Mountain Public Media is pleased to introduce the newest staff member in Grand Junction, Hillary Daniels. In her capacity as the Community Engagement Specialist, Hillary will be working with volunteers. Hillary had the opportunity to travel when she was younger but finally decided to move to Grand Junction where her grandparents live. She graduated from Colorado Mesa University in 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in mass communications. From there, she has had a variety of jobs from working for a

news station to working as an administrator at Rocky Mountain Health Plans. During that time, she found that she had a strong passion for social media marketing and event planning. She brings that passion to her current job with Rocky Mountain Public Media. She is also a Girl Scout leader for girls with disabilities in high school and she is on the Colorado Mesa University Alumni Event Committee. Hillary and Allison Ellington with Girl Scouts of Colorado stopped by the KFQX studio to discuss the new troop for disabled teenage girls in the Grand Valley. Hillary talks about where the inspiration to create the group came from and the ways in which it'll be different from other troops. She also discusses the ways they plan to empower the girls in the group by giving them an opportunity to have experiences that cater to their unique sensory needs. (For the full interview, go to https://www.westernslopenow.com/news/local-news/girl-scouts-creates-troop-for-disabled-teens/1569850400.) In Hillary’s words, “I have a huge passion for making people happy, helping them any way I can, and connecting people to help strengthen their goals and passions in life.” Welcome to Rocky Mountain Public Media Hillary! We are excited to have you on the team.

Rocky Mountain Public Media—Station News (excerpts from staff newsletter by Lone Bryan)

We are so proud that our own Carlos Lando is one of the 19 honorees with banners along the historic Welton Street corridor of Five Points, Denver’s only historical cultural district. Carlos has been a part of KUVO Jazz for 33 years!

RMPM Board Member Andrew Hudson was recently vacationing in Spain and struck up a conversation with a local musician in a jazz club. Andrew asked where he listened to music during the day and the gentleman responded that he was hooked on an app from this little jazz station in Denver, Colorado called KUVO. Yet another KUVO app success story from around the world!

Capital Campaign Update: Such an eventful month! On October 31, we successfully closed on our new market tax credits. We also finalized our partnerships with the City and County of Denver and Emily Griffith Technical College on the Community Media Center that will be located on the first floor of the new building. As of the first of November, we have just $3.5 million in philanthropic dollars left to raise to hit our $34 million goal, and on November 29, the construction phase of our project will begin with the official groundbreaking ceremony. Matchwits: Sixteen schools from across Colorado gathered one last time in the KTSC studio in Pueblo for the 34th and final taping of the locally produced RMPBS series “Matchwits”. Students, parents, coaches, staff and crew celebrated the final season with a “Farewell to Matchwits” luncheon. “Colorado Experience” and National Recognition: Congrats to “Colorado Experience” (COEX) for recognition from APT (American Public Television) at their annual national conference. COEX airs nationally on WGBH’s World Channel as part of their North-South-East-West Series. Long Tail Journalism: Remember our 2017 documentary “Beyond Standing Rock” in which our Inside Energy journalists looked at issues of native American rights and resources? “Beyond Standing Rock” lives on. More than four dozen schools, organizations, and individuals nationwide have purchased rights to show the film including Yale University, the Autry Museum of the West and a number of K-12 schools, churches, public libraries and colleges across the country. One more new staff member: Welcome to Kate McDonnell, our new Vice President of Leadership Giving. KRMA-TV produced “Showtime on Ice” to feature assets in Denver area By Anne Marshall Christner, Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) volunteer Channel Six brought a locally-filmed program of figure skating to living rooms in its broadcast area in December, 1980. Filmed in May, 1980 at the Colorado Ice Arena in Denver, “Showtime on Ice” featured a number of award-winning amateur skaters who had local ties. One such performer was Olympic Gold Medalist Robin Cousins, who had trained at the Colorado Ice Arena for three years. Other singles skaters in the show included the 1980 Japanese and British Ladies Champions, Emi Watanabe and Karena Richardson. Skating pairs who performed in “Showtime on Ice” included Judy Blumberg and Michael Siebert – 1980 U.S. National Senior Dance Silver Medalists – as well as 1980 U.S. National Junior Pair Champions Dana Graham and Paul Wylie. “Showtime on Ice” was produced by the Colorado Skating Club led by Carlo and Christa Fassi, who were world-class trainers of Olympic champions Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamill. KRMA-TV Director of Programming Dan Everett said that the figure-skating program was only the first of such programs to be produced “to highlight events and activities in the Denver metro area.” More than 20 people were involved in videotaping the rehearsals and final performance. Mr. Everett showcased some clips of the program at an August, 1980 meeting of the Council for Public Television (KRMA’s governing board), explaining that this one-hour show required 309 hours of work by 25 people. Development Director Trudy Fowler asked Council members for suggestions for procuring $25,000 in underwriting support, and said the station hoped the show would be distributed to other U.S. stations via PBS. (The Adolph Coors Company ultimately underwrote “Showtime on Ice.”)

The show was aired in early December, 1980 during Festival events to solicit membership pledges. Then in January, 1981, “Showtime on Ice” and its producer, Warren Wright, and Director Kaye Lavine, were honored by the Colorado Broadcasters Association with a first-place award for best single program in Colorado. In a press release, Mr. Wright said that “we are extremely appreciative of this honor, and feel that it demonstrates that public television, given the proper support, can provide quality local programming for the community it serves.” The photos from the SAM archives below provide highlights from this special program.
