(NGL&S) This group of dancers is officially known as Nordahl Grieg Leikarring og Spelemannslag. This entertaining group of dancers is a non‐profit social and performing group that meets for practice weekly at the Masonic Hall in Mountain View, focusing on traditional Norwegian dances and dances from other Scandinavian coun‐ tries. Led by Meg Laycock and Tom Sears, they welcome visitors to any of their weekly classes. The group performed in July this year for the Daughters of Norway International Convention in Burlingame. For their performances, the dancers wear traditional Norwegian dress. The group takes their name from the Sons of Norway Nordahl Grieg Lodge, where they originally formed. Nordahl Grieg was a Norwegian journalist, nov‐ elist, and popular poet who flew with RAAF during WWII as an observer and correspondent; his plane was shot down and he was killed along with the aircraft crew in 1943. Though the name is a bit unusual for eve‐ ryday folk, definitions of the words are helpful: A Leikarring is a Norwegian folk dance group and a Spele‐ mannslag is a group of folk musicians (ensemble). You won’t want to miss their colorful dance and music presentations on January 8, 2017 at our SVAS club meeting.

Presidents Letter: This month is a Merry Month. Time for Happiness and Cheer. We always have a good time at our meetings and this month was no exception. Upon arrival at Harry’s we found that the room had been double booked. The “Corvette Owners Club” had also been booked. After some searching and negotiation we found that we could take over the Bar area. What better place for music during the holidays.? We were a little cramped but it all turned out well. I wish to announce the election of our newest Board Member. Lou Buonomo has agreed to join our Board of Directors. He and his wife Karen have been helping out at the front desk for some time now. He started playing the accordion one year ago and is making great pro-gress to the point that he is joining in with the Jam Band performances that we have been having. Welcome aboard Lou, I am sure you will be a big help to our organization. Unfortunately because the photographer was in the Jam Band we didn’t get pictures of our large group in the preprogram. II would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope to see everyone next on January 8th - the second Sunday due to the Holiday. - Ken

Welcome New Members: Mei Lu & You Chien; Connie Tan

There was no better place to kick off the holidays than at Harry’s Hofbrau the first Sunday of De-cember which, by the way, is where we found SVAS getting into the yuletide spirit! Thanks to maestro, Ken Caple’s fine organizational skills, SVAS’s own JAM Band offered up one hour chock filled with holiday cheer and ho-ho-ho enthusiasm! You can’t beat those old-time favorite holiday songs that are always just perfect for an audi-ence sing-a-long accompanied by 13 accordionists joined by Barb Corsiglia on bass guitar and Gloria Tapogna on recorder. Welcoming the arrival of the holiday season with a dazzling display of musical talent was the beautiful and talented Doris Sprugasci who treated us to a medley of accordion favorites. Played with her characteristic technical skill and joie de vivre, Doris treated us to several accordion standards including Pennies from Heaven, Upali Upala and It Had to be You. Sledding in from Greenfield, she surely did spice up our meeting with her performance - all the while smiling and seeming to enjoy every moment! Music has always been a staple of the most merry time of year. Hubert Kallabis , playing his amazing Zupan ac-cordion shared some old-timey favorites and then took us on a musical tour around the world with tunes such as Am Abend auf der Heide, Blue Hawaii, South of the Border, and Spanish Eyes. Hubert’s performance offered up a dis-play of virtuosity and pizazz. Waltzes and polkas were all part of the rich banquet of songs Hubert presented to us.

It takes special skills to prepare and serve food that is as pleasing to the eye as to the taste buds. Applause all around was expressed to all those who brought treats to this month’s event. Special appreciation to the cooks and bakers who shared their many culinary talents by treating us to two whole tables full of delicious goodies, both sweet and savory. To the accompaniment of Roberta Rosa’s interpretation of White Christmas, Bob Stanfield announced this month’s raffle winners Pam Kawashima, Karen Bouanamo, Linda Hoffman, Barb Corsiglia, Rudy Pivk, John Mendez, Marilyn Portchy, Florence Lam and Jesse Aripez.

Roberto Rosa As an early Christmas gift to all of us, Roberto Rosa hitched a ride on Santa’s sleigh to Harry’s all the way from Santa Rosa. Roberto plays a customized Bell accor-dion with three and four sets of reeds with a double tone chamber and the latest contactless midi system. Latin jazz is one of Roberto’s specialities. Latin jazz is a genre of jazz with Latin American rhythms. Born in Puerto Rico, Roberto is the first Caribbean musician to play Latin Jazz on the accordion.

His music emphasizes percussion and South American rhythms. Roberto’s performance included jazz, merengue, bossa nova, salsa, and folkloric music. Putting his own spin on traditional Christmas standards, Roberto shared his musi-cal renditions with his very unique characteristic jazzy flair. As with any instrument, “wow-worthy” technique is what makes expert accordionists stand out and Roberto’s eclectic

mix of familiar songs filled the room and our hearts with good music and lots of holiday cheer!
