Life Image – Traditions By Carolyn Bendall

Traditions are what solidify children’s security within the family and extended family unit.

Our children declared that after going to stay overnight on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena CA on New Year’s Eve for just one time and the next year approached, “But it’s a tradition, we have to go!” So, we went to the Rose Parade again. Granted, they had to come to the realization that it would be a twice in a lifetime event; however, they wanted to watch the parade on New Year’s Day for several years after.

More realistic traditions that have stayed even as they have become adults, were our Friday night pizza and a movie night—this tradition happened because we couldn’t afford to go to the movies, but we could afford a cheap pizza and a movie rental! Also, our new pajamas every Christmas, as a gift under the tree from ‘The Grinch’. We also got each of them a new Christmas ornament each year, and I didn’t realize how much this meant to them until it was time for them to go out on their own and they wanted their ornaments, like really desperately wanted their ornaments. I realized, this was their growing up years in Christmas ornaments.

Some traditions are simply recipes, our children do not go for any homemade fudge except for Grandmoma’s, no one else’s is worth the time or the ingredients. One daughter has to have a real pumpkin instead of canned pumpkin for her pumpkin pies, so we start the lookout for the cooking pumpkins early!

For a long time we did rockets on Monday holidays or the 4th of July. That one faded as everyone graduated from school and got real jobs, however, they still enjoy rockets.

It isn’t hard to start a tradition. It can simply be that you read a certain book at each holiday; or watch a certain movie on certain days; or watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while fixing dinner. A new one that we have started is volunteering for Toys for Tots each year, sometimes more than one time.

It is never too late to start a new tradition. What makes it so important to children is that security in knowing that this particular activity is always going to happen, no matter what else is going on. This is security to children. It helps to solidify their family unit, and give them a sense of belonging. So, what will be your new tradition you start this year? (I’ll be watching ‘Holiday Inn’ and ‘White Christmas’, so don’t call me and tell me, just message me!)

We live in an age where instant gratification is at its height. Instant gratification does not encourage the setting of short term, and eventually, long term goals. We have developed a simple program of goal setting and working towards individual changes within one’s life experiences and daily encounters. Our subjects cover a variety of different options within one’s personality, personal choices, or professional endeavors.

Do not overload yourself. Make yourself accountable. Present yourself in your best light, and then move forward toward that life definition.

Select two goals a month, one from two different subjects. After you have completed one goal in each subject; start over again. Sometimes you may be able to choose more than two goals a month, however, realize that to change a behavior one must do a goal for at least 21 days.

Do not give up. If you stop for a few days, just pick up where you left off. It if is a goal that would change behavior, then your 21 days would start over.

Need help? For $35 a month, we will provide support weekly through email and one video chat call a month.

To order the workbook, $12.95, or monthly support for $35 a month or $300 a year:

Wellness: Art Therapy By Kally Efros

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT ADULT COLORING BOOKS? IF

NOT, YOU SOON WILL. ADULT COLORING BOOKS ARE ONE

OF THE HOTTEST TRENDS RIGHT AND FOR SEVERAL GOOD

REASONS. Coloring just might be a great alternative to meditation. Coloring clubs are popping up all over the place. Many refer to coloring as yoga for the brain.

Years ago I saw the therapeutic benefits of art, I had met a young man that suffered with depression. He began drawing beautiful and detailed doodles and mandalas. Through his drawing, he began to heal and find inner peace. Just the other day in my store, someone came in and told me their story of stress and anxiety over her health and never ending pain. Her doctor wanted her to see a therapist for depression; she decided to do art therapy and said she is doing great as a result. She now regularly takes art classes, and she loves beading; it keeps her mind off her challenges and helps get through the days.

The American Art Therapy Association1 defines art therapy as:

…a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by an art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. Clients who use art therapy may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include emotional, behavioral, mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, brain-injury, or neurological conditions and physical illness. Art therapy may be provided for groups or individuals. Clients do not need to have previous experience or expertise in art. Today art therapy is widely practiced in a wide variety of settings from hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, wellness centers, schools, crisis centers, and senior communities to private practice.

Coloring helps unlock your creative potential and relieve tension and anxiety. It even helps with relaxation and helps your mind to rest. Kids happily color and express their creativity. When I was in 1st grade, years ago it was not “okay” to be left-handed. I broke my right arm. The school brought in a tutor as they didn’t want me writing with my left hand. Well that was fine, until it was time for art. I didn’t get to participate. I remember being so frustrated with this and couldn’t wait to get home and start coloring which always made me feel better. I carried a coloring book around with me, it was one of my treasures, this coloring book was about an inch thick.

Art therapy can be a formal therapy protocol, however doing art has many therapeutic benefits on your own and it is different than when a professional art therapist facilitates a session. Simply doing art stimulates a long list of benefits. Not only should every kid have art in their lives on a regular basis, adults would benefit from hobbies, crafts and art.

Art therapy is perfect those on the autism spectrum2. Due to impaired ability to communicate or get their words out, many find themselves screaming and frustrated. Art provides a way to help them express feelings and ideas without words.

Art therapy is showing up in hospitals to help children with traumatic brain injuries or in clinics where children are dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, many Vets find art therapy helpful and it is encouraged for them, and many people report that coloring has become their new favorite hobby. Art stimulates the brain and helps people put the pieces together and unlock blocks.

In the 1900’s Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology, prescribed coloring and drawing mandalas as it calmed his patient’s minds. It is a centering activity and rests the brain from fear.

Coloring encourages imagination which is not only great to stimulate in children, but for adults as well. Imagination is the stuff dreams are made of and helps to light a fire to our passion. Imagination sparks innovation. Albert Einstein is credited with the following quote:

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview for life’s coming attractions.”

Wellness: Art Therapy (Continued)

Art therapy can include drawing, coloring, painting, dance, crafts, building models, theater and music.

“Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” -Twyla Tharp

Coloring is just fun and it actually helps train your brain to focus. While you are coloring, you use two hemispheres of your brain – both logic and creativity. It may even help delay the onset of dementia.

A mandala is a drawing that is usually in a circle; it represents wholeness and has intricate, symmetrical imagery. Drawing mandalas and coloring from books with mandalas helps promote a meditative activity and

mental well-being. Check out Craftsy3 for a nice tutorial to draw a mandala.

Another form of drawing that is very popular is Zentangle4. It is based on using repetitive patterns and structured patterns

Dance is a great form of physical exercise and also helps postpone dementia and may even boost your memory. Dancing also reduces stress and has a positive effect for those dealing with depression.

“In many shamanic societies, people who complain of being disheartened… or depressed would be asked,… When did you stop dancing?... This is because dancing is a universal healing salve.” -Gabrielle Rothou

Learning new skills whether it is a new dance step, playing an instrument, developing a hobby, learning a new craft, coloring and drawing help the brain develop better neuroplasticity, essentially that means that you help keep your brain young and

adaptable.Give yourself and others the gift of art. Take time to color and doodle. Give your kids art supplies and the endless possibilities of imagination. Get together with friends for snacks, cocktails and coloring to color and socialize. Take a dance class or music lessons. Learn a new craft skill. You’ll have fun, help your brain stay younger, and improve your health and mental well-being.

Surviving the Diabetes Road Trip By Dominick Domasky

Published on http://www.insulinnation.com

The following is an edited excerpt from the book Don’t Double Bread the Fish, a Tale of Failure, Persistence, and Finding Success:

I WILL NEVER FORGET MY SON’S FIRST PRESCHOOL HALLOWEEN PARTY. HE DECIDED TO DRESS UP AS DARTH VADER. THE COSTUME WAS A BAGGY BLACK PLASTIC GET-UP WITH A HARD PLASTIC MASK. The mask only had a front with razor-sharp edges, and the back has a tight rubber band attached by the world’s weakest staple.

Cameron had been drinking an abnormal amount leading up to the Halloween party, and urinating often. He would wake up at night and

drink a 32-ounce Gatorade, and then still want more. I remember wondering if he was really thirsty or just messing with me. Otherwise, he appeared healthy as an ox.

We sent him off wearing his mask and garbage bag-like costume. Later that day, we got a call from his preschool teacher; she said our son was sobbing uncontrollably. The teachers didn’t know what to do and asked us to come pick him up. My wife did so and called the pediatrician and described the recent symptoms. The pediatrician instructed her to get him to the local hospital for blood testing.

Our son’s pediatrician soon broke the news that our son had Type 1 diabetes and that we had to go to the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital as fast as we could to meet with an endocrinologist. We loaded ourselves into the car for the long, scary trip.

My family have spent some of the hardest days of our lives in the Children’s Hospital, but those first few days were some of the roughest. We were in a fog, a state of disbelief. Every time I was alone I cried.

The visits have gotten easier since then, but certainly not easy. The hospital visits soon became not as overwhelming or as frequent. We settled into a routine where we were only traveling to Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital quarterly for scheduled testing, aside from the occasional diabetes emergency. The regiment for my son at these visits is as follows: his fingers are poked to draw blood, then his tiny arms are hooked up with rubber hoses for drawing more blood.

Your True Colours Vol. 1 Issue 10

After that his blood is tested, numerous other examinations are done, and the doctors poke at him more; repeat. Then fellows and med school students have their turn. Then they ask him questions and speak to him as if he’s an adult with any understanding of why this is happening to him.

Usually after the routine visits, my family and I will head for a feast. My son gets to pick the place, and to him there is no greater treat than “chicken on the bone.” This is “fried chicken” to the rest of the world.

One gloomy January visit stands out in my memory. It hadn’t been the easiest visit. They had forgotten to call us for our appointment at the hospital, so we sat in the waiting room for hours. My daughter was two at the time and my son four; it took a lot of energy to keep them happy while we waited.

Finally, after the visit was done, we left Pittsburgh and headed towards our feast on the way home. We stopped at one of the nearby shopping strips to visit a restaurant that we thought Cameron would like. It was the Golden Corral, a buffet that was a good place for “chicken on the bone.”

I don’t know if the cold weather had gotten the best of the restaurant or what, but the vestibule was flooded. I’m not talking about some wet entrance mats; I’m talking about six inches of water. My wife and I were horrified, but Cameron thought it was great. He wanted to step in the puddles and make a splash. Amazingly, the restaurant stayed open, and we really didn’t have the energy to find another place.

Just as we paid for the buffet, the fire alarm started going off. Nobody moved. The manager assured everyone the alarm was because of the water in the lobby, and not a fire in the kitchen. It was ear-splitting, but Cameron wasn’t even phased. The kid ate like a champ. The alarm didn’t stop until we were putting our coats back on to leave.

A few days later, I was talking with Cameron about dinner plans, and I asked him what his favorite restaurant was. He said, “The place that plays the fire truck music.” Of all the pokes and prods of the day, the one memory that stands out for him is the awesomeness that we ate chicken on the bone while a fire alarm went off. Every day I learn a lot about resilience from my child, and about how to enjoy the little things in life.

The Creative Process in Songwriting By Nick Bryant B.B.A.

WHERE DOES CREATIVITY COME

FROM? WHAT IS IT? WHY DO WE

SEEK TO CREATE?

As a songwriter I ask myself these questions. The answer is very simple. Creativity comes from a deep desire to better the world around us given our limited perception and understanding.

I want to continue this blog entry given the fact that I do make a living as a singer-songwriter. Many years ago my grandmother gave me a book that helped younger kids

visualize where they wanted to be in three, five, ten or even thirty years from now. The book had me literally drawing pictures of the images in my mind when thinking about my future. I remember after drawing a big stage with myself as well as other band members playing to an audience how awesome that would be. Here I am writing and performing music and doing it as a full-time job.

Given my autobiographical scenario above, was my creative process an overnight event? No. In my case, I invested thousands of hours into my craft, my education (of business) and my overall creative process to become who I am today. I’m still on my way…

Rumor has it that some of the greatest songs in history have been written in less than twenty minutes. Less is more, keep it simple stupid, we’ve heard it all too many times. Every new song is a fresh white piece of paper left to you to make it darker or a fresh black piece of paper waiting for some light. The metaphors will go on forever and its up to you to pick the right ones for the appropriate song/situation. I’m afraid creative minds are never satisfied and never see their own worth. There’s a reason for that. There’s a reason for a lot of things, but sometimes it comes down to learning what you can and cannot control and using both to your advantage.

Your True Colours Vol. 1 Issue 10

D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 5 | 28 Your True Colours

It takes a lot of elbow grease, time, effort, drive and persistence to get very good at anything. Songwriting or playing guitar is just like any other skill: it is learned. Some may be born in a musical family which gives this person generations worth of time spent on getting better at their craft. Mozart’s father was hard on young Mozart just like Joe Jackson was hard on Michael to continue excelling forward. They were not born with their skills. Your life influences your drive and motivations and it’s up to you to satisfy the burning fire inside. Mine happens to be playing music, writing songs, helping people, etc.

Creativity is such a fickle concept and songwriting techniques are plentiful. Let’s think about songwriting like confessions pouring out your deepest feelings. If you keep them bottled up you will explode. Maybe a story that needs to be heard. Let it out. Maybe just a random phrase or melody that gets you excited. Some songs are written very quickly and are never revisited again for changes. No need to fix something that isn’t broken right? Others are revisited many times and are constantly changing. The latter is similar to nursing a baby. Some seem to need lots of love and care, more than others.

Try it all. Different approaches, languages, tempos, rhythms, keys, topics, points of view, imaginary, auto-biographical, #deep, etc. Take ideas from other writers, musicians, artists, etc. or don’t. That’s the beauty of creativity. Just go ahead and fall, fail and continue to learn until you can crawl and soon enough you’ll be running like a champion. Like I always say, its not where you start, but where you go from there that matters. Regardless of the form, get it out, finish it and move on to the next one.

Hang Your Artwork Like a Pro by Miguel Afortunado.

Published Aug. 4, 2015 in www.artfinder.com

TATE'S SENIOR ART HANDLING TECHNICIAN MIKEI HALL HAS MOVED, HUNG AND POSITIONED SOME OF THE WORLD'S MOST EXCITING, EXPENSIVE AND IRREPLACEABLE WORKS OF ART. HERE HE OFFERS SOME TIPS ON HOW GALLERY EXPERTISE CAN BE USED TO HANG ART IN YOUR HOME.

It might not be a priceless Picasso or an irreplaceable Rembrandt, but if your new work of art is worth having, it's worth looking after.

Mark Rothko, White over Red (1957) We usually use a ‘center line’ which is what runs through the center of the painting. Keeping this line at

eye level when you hang it allows you to look directly into the work.

Sometimes artists like things done differently. Mark Rothko's Seagram murals at Tate Modern are hung high as the artist wanted you to feel like you were looking up at the works.

Richard Long once did an installation at Tate Britain where wall works were hung very low to help viewers move their eyes around and engage with sculptural works on the ground.

Be prepared When hanging a work always allow yourself as much time as possible. Make sure you have a piece of paper, a pencil, masking tape, a hand drill, a measuring tape, a spirit level and a screwdriver. Another idea is to carry an envelope ready just to catch dust while you are drilling.

Tips from the top You can buy little felt circles from places like John Lewis and pop these on the four corners of the rear of the frame. This will prevent the frame from scratching your wallpaper or paintwork. This also allows the picture to hang slightly away from the wall so air can get through. If the work is hanging on an external wall, this will prevent condensation gathering.

Steady now... Something that even experienced art handlers forget, whether you're hanging a famous oil painting in a gallery, or a print that you love in your home, is to keep the work well clear of your working area.

The worst thing that could happen is just as you're drilling the last screw into the wall, you drop the drill through the glass of the frame and rip a nice little tear through the paper.

Haste makes waste The most important thing to remember is to take your time. You spent long enough deciding which artwork you wanted in your home, make sure you put it in the right place. Are people going to be sitting or standing when they see it? Does its shape sit well with the furniture around it?Never rush hanging art as you definitely won't want to redo the job, I assure you!

Top Tips to Start Your Art Collection By Jayna Mistry.

Published Aug. 10, 2015 in www.artfinder.com

YOUR TASTE IS UNIQUE TO YOU, AND THE GOLDEN RULE IS TO BUY IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT! BUT WE KNOW STARTING AN ART COLLECTION CAN BE A DAUNTING PROSPECT, SO HERE ARE OUR TOP TEN HINTS AND TIPS.

1. Buy it because you love it The biggest mistake is to buy an artwork primarily as an investment. The art market is fickle, and it’s not easy to buy and sell artworks quickly. So buy it because you love it and not because you feel you should.

The highland light 16 | Category: Oil | $43.65

2. Start with a budget This will refine your search, and may influence what type of artwork you buy. Beginners often buy limited edition prints and photographs: this is a great way to own reasonably priced works by well-known artists. Conversely, you can buy original oil paintings by lesser-known artists for under £150.

3. The smaller the edition, the higher the price If you’re buying a work which is part of an edition, check the edition size to ensure that you’re paying the right price. All limited editions on Artfinder are signed and have the edition number written on them.

4. Think about where you’ll put the work This may influence the style of the work you’re looking for, as well as the size. As a rule of

thumb, the bigger the work, the higher the price.

5. Browse and browse again This will give you an idea of the styles of art that you like (if you don’t know already). By clicking on the heart-shaped button on each artwork on Artfinder you can to save your favorites to your wishlist and review them later.

6. Do your research Once you have chosen a selection of artworks you like, do some background research on the artists. Have they featured in any exhibitions? Have they won any competitions or prizes? Have they been written about in any books or journals? We also recommend checking whether the artist is listed on the Artfacts.net Artist Ranking System, which ranks the world’s top 100,000 artists by their exhibition success.

7. Be confident in your taste Art is subjective, and there is no right or wrong. Don’t be shy if you feel like you “know nothing about art”.

8. Talk to people If you have art savvy friends or relatives, drop them a call and ask for their advice. Additionally, our experts are more than happy to answer any of your questions. Please visit our contact us page if you have a query.

9. Take care of your artwork Artworks can quickly depreciate in value if they are damaged. Works on paper should be kept away from direct sunlight, and if the artworks are going to be on a wall, they should ideally be glazed with acid-free matting and ultraviolet light-resistance glass.

10. Read art books and train your eye It can take years to train your eye, but this is the best way to spot a future star. Slowly build a library of books on the history of art, and read contemporary journals to get an idea of which themes and aesthetics are in vogue.

The World Needs More Artists by Jayna Mistry. Published Sept. 24, 2015 in www.artfinder.com

Taken from the original post on his blog, self-professed misfit artist Jeff Goins talks about the importance of art and what it brings to the world... http://goinswriter.com/world-needs-artists/

THE HEAVENS ARE TRYING TO TEACH ME SOMETHING, IT SEEMS.

The other week, I heard Ann Voskamp at a conference advocate for poetry over prose. She reminded me that in a world of reality TV and fear-driven media, beauty can still captivate us.

I saw my friend Mark deliberate over the final iteration of his memoir that’s about to be published.

And I saw my other friend Carl spend night after night, recording his solo EP in a studio in downtown Atlanta.

I see all of this, and I realize something: There is still a place for great art in this world. Still a place for people who think outside the box, for misfit artists like me… and maybe you.

Why we need art These friends of mine, these artists, are doing something that borderlines on obsession. They’re tirelessly working their fingers to the bone to create something important and meaningful. They’re spending more time on their craft than they ever will be rewarded for.

But none of that matters to them. Because they’re creating art. And while the “reward” may never come, they will leave a legacy.

Art allows us to see the invisible, to call forth light in a world shrouded in darkness. It speaks to that most real part of ourselves we’ve forgotten. It transcends circumstance and gives perspective.

We can’t face great art and not be changed. And the world most definitely needs to change - for the better. What will do the job?

• Politics won’t do it. Laws and regulations aren’t enough to transform human hearts. • Business won’t do it. Economic success doesn’t translate to happiness and wholeness.

(We should know this by now.) • Science won’t do it. Human progress describes how something works, not why it works.

None of these will work. Neither will intellectualism or sheer brute force. All these may be good for something. But they are not enough to change the world.

We need something more than an explanation or equation. We need to be restored. And only art can do that.

Great art begins with intention Making great art requires good motives. You can’t set out to do this Helen Wells https://www.artfinder.com/helen-wells

Your True Colours Vol. 1 Issue 10

D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 5 | 39 Your True Colours

The World Needs More Artists (Continued) with the sole intention of making money. It doesn’t work like that. People see through your ruse. The work has to be, first and foremost, a labor of love.

Somehow, God takes notice of this and rewards you in his own, unexpected way. Eventually. Your job is to do the work, not expect the reward. And as you apply your passion, it turns into

conviction, maybe even compulsion.

You spend hours and days and weeks and months and years trying to get it “just right.” This is not because you’re a perfectionist, but because art warrants tedium.

Fortunately, it doesn’t end there.

You still must ship All this obsessing, all your constant tweaking, doesn’t matter if you don’t ship.

I don’t know how you reconcile the two sides of the creative spectrum (idea generation and production), but I know that it never goes away. If you are an artist, you have to learn to live in this tension.

You have to keep releasing your work into the world, and it has to be good. If it’s excellent, and nobody sees it, it doesn’t count. If it’s on display for the world to see, but ordinary, it’s irrelevant.

Louise Stebbing https://www.artfinder.com/louise-stebbing

The path to compelling work lies somewhere in between the two extremes of genius-but-invisible and ordinary-but-in-your face.

Only the artist knows the true balance; only she can find the harmony. This is the person with the taste and passion to make meaningful work. She’s the ones with enough gumption to create change. These people, true artists, are rare.

And for good reason…

Quality matters There are a lot of people in the world doing mediocre work. The problem is they think it’s pretty good. And that’s what makes it mediocre.

“Pretty good” isn’t good enough. If your project is not press release material, if it’s not remarkable enough to tell the neighbors, then it needs more R&D. It needs to be more compelling, more noteworthy, more shareable.

Spend time on this. Make your book or album or dance class the most amazing, incredible thing you could possibly make it. And then ship.

Do this so that you don’t have to feel like a sleaze for promoting it. Create something so world-changing that you’re proud to promote it. Make it something you can’t not talk about.

It sure beats the alternative, right?

Go do something amazing What’re you waiting for? It’s time to begin. The world deserves better than mediocre. So do you, and so does your art.

Remember: If you don’t ship, it doesn’t matter. Don’t worry about failure; worry about stalling. Your art gets better as you go. Just don’t ever use that as an excuse to settle.

And once you’ve created something, do it again. And again. And again, and again, and again…

The world is longing to be changed. It is desperate for great art. We

IS IT TIME TO FIRE AN EMPLOYEE? By Delmar Johnson

IN MY 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN HUMAN RESOURCES, I HAVE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF A MANAGER WHO LIKES THE IDEA OF HAVING TO FIRE AN EMPLOYEE. IT’S ONE OF THOSE THINGS IN CORPORATE AMERICA THAT HAS A HIGH PROBABILITY FOR CAUSING ANXIETY, OR YOU LOSING A LOT OF SLEEP.

Even as uncomfortable as firing someone is, there is an appropriate way to do it to reduce the chances of a highly charged and emotional experience. As a smart, responsible entrepreneur and business owner, you should have access to a business attorney, and you’ll want to consult with him or her before terminating anyone’s employment with your company.

Entrepreneur.com offers a list of great questions you should definitely ask yourself before taking that leap to fire. I share with you the top five of ten questions while inviting you to continue reading the entire list here: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/243632.

1. Am I abiding by company policy? If your company has a policy for dismissing employees, be sure to follow it meticulously

Your True Colours Vol. 1 Issue 10

D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 5 | 44 Your True Colours

2. Am I being fair? Seriously consider who supplied the incriminating information about an employee that led to the decision to fire him or her

3. Am I following state and federal employment law? To be sure you don’t violate state and federal law when terminating someone, consult with your company’s human resources personnel or employment attorney ahead of the termination, or that you research applicable employment laws yourself, if needed. The U.S. Department of Labor thoroughly details federal rules and regulations regarding termination here: http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/termination/. To find your state’s labor laws, you can search here: http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/state.htm.

4. What documentation of the cause of termination is needed? There’s technically no paperwork that’s required to let someone go. However, documenting consistent under performance is key when firing someone for not fulfilling his or her job duties. Keep thorough written records of warnings you’ve given the employee and of any improvement or probation plans provided.

5. Where and when should I fire the employee? Whatever you do, don’t fire the employee over the phone. Afford him or her the respect of a face-to-face exit interview.

Termination should never been done off the “cuff”, but with solid consideration in following protocol to reduce the probability of backlash of lawsuits from a disgruntled “former” employee.

Ironing Out the Wrinkles in Skin Care By Stan Gardner, M.D., CNS

The Skin Care Industry: Ironing Out the Wrinkles OUR SKIN IS THE LARGEST ORGAN IN OUR BODY, AND YET WE BOMBARD IT, KNOWINGLY AND

UNKNOWINGLY, WITH STUFF THAT CAN DO US A LOT OF HARM. IN THE EFFORT TO LOOK AND FEEL

OUR BEST, WE SMEAR UNSAFE GUNK ON OUR FACE AND BODY–CREAMS AND LOTIONS THAT (LIKE A

LOT OF PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS) MASK THE SYMPTOMS, WHILE CONTRIBUTING TO THE OVERALL

PROBLEM. In addition to masking symptoms, most of the popular skin care products are exceptionally costly. We’d like to explore some of what we have discovered with you.

As our world population ages, more and more people are seeking solutions. Is it possible to look younger? To feel better? To live longer?

A recent discovery shows it is.

But before we get to that part of the story, let’s first talk about some of the ingredients that got us into the mess of dangerous skin care. We’ll just mention a few, along with what they’re used for, and why they are a problem for our overall well-being:

7. Hydantoin, Urea Preservative

8. Colors, Pigments Coloring

9. Chemical Sunscreens Block UVB rays

On the surface (forgive the pun), these seem innocuous enough. Look on the ingredients list for nearly every soap, shampoo, make up, and lotion. You’ll have a tough time finding something without one or more of these ingredients.

Now let’s have a look at what these ingredients do:

Phthalates, DEP, DBP and Fragrance: are endocrine disruptors (alter genital development)

Parabens: have hormone disrupting effects (mimic estrogen), and are possibly a breast cancer risk.

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate: are a 1,4-Dioxane contaminant that causes cancer, neurotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): opens pores so toxins enter more readily, causes allergic reactions, and is a 1,4-Dioxane contaminant that causes cancer

Propylene Glycol: is an irritant that causes dermatitis and allergies

MEA, DEA, TEA (___ethanolamine): cause allergic reactions and eye irritations, dryness of skin, and contain cancer-causing nitrates

Hydantoin, Urea: release formaldehyde and cause allergic dermatitis

Chemical Sunscreens: endocrine disruptors; cause free radicals

High Costs, Little to Show for Them We looked at the leading skin care products that are sold in the United States today. It is very difficult to locate the ingredients list for most of the skin care products! But we found info on three of the top four. Number one costs $210.40 for one ounce. Number two costs $355.35 for 1 1/2 ounces. Number 4 costs $128.00 for 3 1/3 ounces.

Then we looked at a popular new skin care that comes in a night cream and day cream. The day cream wholesales at $80.00 for 30 ml, or one ounce. It retails for $110.00.

One site offers a price comparison of several leading products, naming them by name:

NeriumAD Age-Defying Treatment $80

But that’s not the biggest issue that caused our concern. Just have a look at the ingredients. Mind you, not all are bad. But many of them are from the list of toxic ingredients we shared above:

Trades of Hope – Empowering Women out of Poverty

By Tracy Tartera

TRADES OF HOPE IS NOT YOUR ORDINARY DIRECT SALES COMPANY. WHY? BECAUSE AS A BUSINESS THEY HAVE SET THEMSELVES APART BY EMPOWERING WOMEN OUT OF POVERTY AND THEY DO IT WELL. IN JUST FIVE SHORT YEARS THIS COMPANY HAS ESTABLISHED 20 ARTISAN GROUPS IN 16 COUNTRIES TO HELP WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF OWNING THEIR OWN BUSINESS AND OVERCOMING THE DEVASTATION OF POVERTY! Trades of Hope is rescuing women from the slums, sweat shops and sex trade and giving them what every woman wants

- a way to provide for their family while maintaining dignity and pride in themselves and what they do. Trades of Hope was founded in 2010 by Holly Wehde, former business owner and church planter and Gretchen Huijskens, former missionary to Haiti. It was their desire to find a way to create jobs for women in need giving them the opportunity to provide the basic necessities for their families; food, clothing, shelter, education and health care. Today, Trades of Hope employees over 6000 artisans in 16 countries; (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jordan, Kenya, Nepal, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Uganda, United States, Vietnam); and 2,000 women in the United States through its direct sales model. The Trades of Hope business model is a “Party with a Purpose” and it is working! But it isn’t a typical “party” business where mass-produced items are sold to benefit only the manufacturer and the saleswomen. These Artisans are hand crafting each of their products with care and attention. So, why so much focus on these women? Here are a few statistics that will help you understand the impact that Trades of Hope is having across the globe and why they believe Empowering Women is the answer to generational poverty. 40 % of working women across the world make less than $2 a day. Women are paid, in general, .25 cents to a man’s dollar. 70% of the world’s 1.3 billion people in poverty are women. The primary victims of today’s wars are not soldiers, they are women and children. When given resources, women will share them with her children and community.

Trades of Hope is engaged in Fair Trade principles which means they are:

• Building long-term relationships between producers and buyers. • Engaged in environmentally sustainable practices. • Empowering women and providing equal employment opportunities for all, especially

the marginalized. • Providing safe and healthy working conditions for those they employee.

Fair Trade is about providing a living wage for those in extreme poverty and giving them a better way of life. At Trades of Hope our Artisans are paid 3 - 6 times more than what they would be paid in their own country and they are paid 100% of their asking price up front. This means our Artisans do not wait until a sale is made to feed their family! But once the sale is made, Trades of Hope reserves a portion of the money to support the surrounding communities and villages through the “Gifts of Hope” initiative. This helps fund ministries and business programs started by women to reach well beyond their own community. For example, in Africa “Gifts of Hope” supplies chickens and goats, allowing a family to eat for a year and have a sustainable business by selling the eggs and milk to others. Trades of Hope has also purchased sewing machines and tools to help Artisans get started with their new business. Trades of Hope is also helping women on the home front as well; 10% of the company’s profit goes to support organizations in the fight against modern-day slavery also known as Human Trafficking. These sponsored programs are helping women in the United States escape the sex trade and begin a new life! Trades of Hope takes great pride in the Artisans, making sure that each product is packaged with an Artisan label that tells their story. This is a powerful reminder to the buyer just how

it’s not for sissies A MEMOIR BY MARIE PIZANO

According to Marie Pizano, the word “no”

is not in her vocabulary. She simply

says, “I Can” and “I Will”. Her

memoir, From Barefoot to Stilettos tells

the story of her life thus far, from her

childhood days of living on food stamps,

gangs and double-dutching on the streets

of south-side Chicago to surviving a life

changing accident, moving to Memphis

and living a trophy-wife life, dealing with

the mean girls, the monster-in-law, panic

attacks, becoming a mother, to her post-

divorce years and defeating the odds of

building an entertainment powerhouse, all

while rediscovering herself, her life, and

her power. Through explorations of her

own past and present tense, Marie

reflects on how the sum of her trials and

triumphs shaped her into the empowered

woman she became during her incessant

quest to find her “yes.” ...

Small is Beautiful

Small is beautiful. We are Camelliatune Craftsman. ❤❤❤ We are Camellia tune ❤❤❤ Tangible, sensual, and personal, they suggest that craft and design are ultimately about the relationship established between makers of the things and the individuals who, by selecting and using those things, complete the creative process. Handcrafted, natural materials, and traditional techniques are that which I treasure and value most. Through my own handmade clothing, I wish for people to set aside the attitude of consumerism and cherish the rarity of the things made by hand and feelings that come along with. I work very small and become completely engrossed in details. A lot of my inspiration comes from Tang Dynasty folk art and 20th century styles, brief luxurious design, but also everyday life and all sorts of romantic notions and nostalgic recollections. I got my start with my family members and I understand from first-hand experience how much

love and energy is required to make a business like this, in an industry like ours, to work. It can be soul-destroying cut-throat and the competition is fierce. Intensely fierce. Because of this, I have a great deal of admiration for the small, independent designers who are driven more by passion, than profit and follow a path that allows them to truly express their creativity and what they love. Now, At least I am brave to say, our brand CAMELLIATUNE are what, in my view, makes my customers so very special.
