In a time when Floridians are

    thinking twice about buying

    property, Europeans and

    Canadians are ignoring the hype,

and shelling out the cash. All

    across Western Europe the

mantra is to 'go west'. From the

    U.K. to Holland to Spain,

Europeans are now the majorplayers when it comes to

    purchasing second homes,

    vacation rentals, and investment

    properties. "The United States is

    a very attractive buy to

    Europeans," says Michael Burke,

a Realtor with John R. Wood

    Realty, "We have something

unique to offer they can't find

    overseas" and he's not just

    talking about our weather.

    According to the National

    Association of Realtors foreign

real estate investment in the U.S.

    increased 8.5% from 2004 to

    2005 rising to $1.87 trillion, a

    national record.

    Although our beautiful beaches

and warm climate is a major

draw to foreign buyers, it's our

weak dollar that has themcrossing the Atlantic in search of

a home. "The pound is at its

highest point in 27 years and the

Euro is strong against the dollar,

    the homes in Florida are

    considered affordable to

    Europeans", says Burke. To

    many foreigners, the United

    States has become the ideal

    vacation destination and

    eventually retirement home.

    And when you compare the

numbers, you can see why. In

    London a modest single-family

    home costs about $600,000. A

similar home would go for a third

of that price in Naples. In

    addition to our 'bargain priced'

    homes, realtors say Europeans

    love the lifestyle and attitude

only found on the coast."What's interesting is that the

weak dollar is now bringing new

    buyers into the housing market

    and what that's doing is

    introducing demand to actually

    balance out the supply," says

    Burke. "Foreign national buyers

    are introducing demand and it's

helping the markets keep a sense

    of calm."

    International real estate

remains in high gear and seems

to be one of the only facets in real

estate to come away from the

    housing crash unscathed.

"Demand is five to ten times

higher than it was at this time last

year. As real estate prices are

    increasing abroad, many folks

are getting priced out of their

own neighborhoods and see theU.S. as an attractive

    diversification of their overall

    real estate portfolio", Burke

    explained.

    International home sales in

    Florida have increased steadily

over the past 5 years, and

    continue to climb. The most

    recent statistics available from

    2005 show more than 82,000

    homes were sold to international

    homebuyers in Florida.

    So what about U.S. investors

who don't have a strong currency

    advantage to boost their

    investments? Advice from

analysts about when to get back

    into the housing market ranges

from right away to five years

    down the line.

"There is no doubt that this isa buyer's market, but when

    exactly the bottom will be

reached is the subject of debate"

says Burke. "The recession in the

    housing market has gone on

    longer than anyone anticipated,

    and the uncertainty has caused

    many investors to be nervous.

    However don't forget the bottom

line is that long term, real estate

    has always been a terrific

    investment for homeowners.

    The recent volatility in the

    stock market has everyone a

little jumpy - even folks who

    have worked with a trusted

    financial planner for years. But

if you've never worked with a

planner before, one of the first

things he or she will do is make

you fill out a risk analysis

    questionnaire.Why is risk analysis

    important before you make

    decisions with your money?

    Risk tolerance is an important

    part of investing - everyone

knows that. But the real value of

    answering a lot of questions

about your risk tolerance is to

tell you what you don't know -

how the sources of your money,

the way you made it, how

    outside forces have shaped your

view of it and how you're

    handling it now will inform

    every decision you make about

    it in the future.

The most important thing a risk

    questionnaire can tell is what's

    important about money to you.

    Trained financial advisers can

    determine your money

    personality through a process of

    questioning discovery. Planners

    can then guide investors within

    their money personality. Do you

want certainty, are you willing to

take a little risk or let it roll

    because "you can always make

    more of it?"

A financial planner tries tosee through the static to find out

what you really need to create a

solid financial life. But it might

make sense to ask yourself a few

    questions before you and your

    planner sit down:

    1. What's important about

    money?

    2. What do I do with my

    money?

    3. If money was absolutely not

an issue, what would I do

    with my life?

    4. Has the way I've made my

    money - through work,

    marriage or inheritance -

    affected the way I think

about it in a particular way?

    5. How much debt do I have

and how do I feel about it?

    6. Am I more concerned about

    maintaining the value of my

    initial investment or making

    a profit from it?

    7. Am I willing to give up that

    stability for the chance at

    long-term growth?

    8. What am I most likely to

enjoy spending money on?9. How would I feel if the

    value of my investment

    dropped for several

    months?

    10. How would I feel if the

    value of my investment

    dropped for several years?

    11. If I had to list three things I

really wanted to do with my

    money, what would they

    be?

    12. What does retirement mean

    to me? Does it mean

    quitting work entirely and

doing whatever I want to do

or working in a new career

    full- or part-time?

    13. Do I want kids? Do I

    understand the financial

    commitment?

    14. If I have kids, do I expect

them to pay their own way

through college or will I pay

all or part of it? What kind

of shape am I in to afford

    their college education?

    15. How's my health and my

    health insurance coverage?

    16. What kind of physical and

    financial shape are myparents in?

    One of the toughest aspects

of getting a financial plan going

    is recognizing how your

    personal style, mindset, and life

    situation might affect your

    investment decisions. A

    financial professional will

    understand this challenge and

can help you think through your

    choices. Your resulting portfolio

should feel like a perfect fit for

    you!

(NUI) - Today, there is an

    overwhelming amount of media

    options available for businesses

to tout their latest products. And,

    regardless of the medium, many

    businesses are set on choosing

Web site addresses they feel are

    memorable, but why should

    phone numbers be any different?

    According to Ron Henson,

the general manager of a Utah

    auto dealership, incorporating a

    vanity phone number into his

    team's marketing plan a phone

    number that spells out words

increased his call volume by 650

    percent.

    "We are shattering previous

sales records by 50 percent, and I

attribute this success to our new

    advertising which prominently

    features a vanity-800 number,"

    Henson said.

    If you're looking for better

ways to get the word out, the

    following tips will help you

    receive higher response rates in

    your advertising and hone your

marketing efforts to generatemore leads and sales:

Say it in a song. Everyone

    loves a good jingle. Using

    jingles in radio and television

    ads creates an emotional

    connection to the consumer

and can last for years if

    correctly used to brand your

    business.

Say it loud and proud. Put

    your vanity phone number on

    everything from business cards

to company cars. Feature it in

    radio, print, television and

    billboard advertising. Using

    your number in all advertising

    materials and in all campaigns

    delivers consistent messaging.

    Prominent placement.

    Feature your vanity-800

number prominently on the TVscreen. Leave it there

    throughout a television

    commercial. Mention it at least

three times in a radio ad.

Above all, make sure it is

    easily visible or heard.

    More impressions, more

    responses. One-off ads will

not work. Make sure that you

    have a moderate-to-heavy

    advertising schedule no matter

    what medium you have chosen

    to convey your message.

    Buying more time or space

will also decrease the cost per

    ad, and your vanity-800

    number will increase your

    ability to generate leads and

    sales. Delivering a consistent

    message multiple times will

    ensure that consumersremember you.

    (ARA) Oh, the

    holidays a time when

    the social calendarseems endlessly filled

    with work parties,

    gatherings with old

    friends and annual

    family get-togethers.

    The pressures of the

    hectic holiday season

    can often make personal

    grooming and styling

    play second fiddle --

    right along with

    grandmas yearly fruit

    cake.

    If you want to ensure

    your aunt doesnt make

you the talk of the family

gossip trail this year, working to achieve a

    clean overall look should

    be the goal this holiday

    season. For women, that

    may mean a fresh, new

    hairstyle. For men, it

    means understanding

    that actually looking like Santa

Claus can make not only small

children cry, but quite possiblycolleagues, friends and family

members as well. Here are some

simple grooming tips to help you

look your best at your next

    holiday get-together.

Cut it out: It is said that

having a great hair style can save

any bad outfit. That said, its

important to start by getting a

    fresh, new cut and style.

Remember this is not the time to

    do anything drastic. Were

    looking for simple, classic looks.

Its important too for women to

ask their stylist for tips on how

to achieve and maintain the style

on their own at home. Getting astylish cut and maintaining it can

    be two completely separate

    tasks, says Richard Marin,

    celebrity stylist. It can be

    challenging to recreate the salon-

styled look the next day, but

    Remington Products makes it

easy by offering a variety of

    lines that help women easily

achieve that look on their own, every day.

D.I.Y.: If a new cut is not

going to fit in the busy calendar

or tight holiday budget, then just

using some of the newest hair

    tool innovations like Nano Silver

can help women create a clean

new style. The new Nano Silver

    straightener from Remington

uses the technology that is said

to cleanse the hair of micro-

    impurities with anti-microbial

    purifying properties leaving hair

    healthy, beautiful and shiny.

    Clean it up: Some men

look at the cold winter months as

an excuse to slack on theirgrooming habits, even claiming

that the extra hair is grown to

    keep them warm. While that

excuse may fly at the North Pole,

    nothing looks better than a

    freshly shaved man. If men

wont dare to bare it all, then use

a grooming tool that allows for

    various length blade adjustments

-- giving men the choice to stillhave that 5 oclock shadow

    scruff, but with style.

Take it off: The cold, harsh

winter months can cause men to

have dry and sensitive skin. To

    prevent the irritation and not-so-

    flattering rash, consider using

    antimicrobial grooming

    products. The Remington

    CleanXchange is the worlds

    first electric shaver to feature

    Nanosilver technology and offer

    a fully disposable, exchangeable

head, good for up to 30 shaves.

Not only does this mean men

will have a clean shave every

time, with reduced redness andirritation, but its easy and

    convenient, eliminating any

    messy cleanup from brushing or

    cleaning out the shaver head.

    styling tips visit,

    f a s h i o nHow to Look Your Holiday Best

    (ARA) Winter is the toughest

time of year on your skin.

    Cool, dry conditions leave

your hands and feet prone to

    painful cracks, splits and

    flaking. The dryness also

    makes the wrinkles youve

been trying so hard to ignore

    more prominent.

    Dont just sit back and

take the abuse! There are some

simple things you can do to

    give your skin a fighting

    chance against the elements.

    What your mother told you

is true. Diet has a lot to do with

it. Eating lots of fruits and

    vegetables will provide your

    skin with the proper nutrients

to fight off crows feet and

    nasal labial folds; but

    according to Dr. Steven Lamm,

    author of several anti-aging

    books, diet alone is not

    enough.

    As we age, the blood

    becomes less efficient at

    delivering the essential

nutrients to the skin, he points

out. So whats a gal to do? Dr.

Lamm says the key to looking

    younger is bringing a wide

    variety of essential vitamins

    and minerals directly to the

skin with the help of an

    enriched moisturizing cream

    like Dermalastyl-B.

    Originally intended as a

material that could be used to

assist with tissue and organregeneration, clinical testing

    proved that Dermalastyl also

had a future in the cosmetics

    industry. Participants in a 2006

    study in Manhattan reported a

    glow to the skin upon

    application and a hydrating

    moisturizing effect that lasted

all day thanks to the creams

    main ingredient -- a bio-

    available source of elastin, the

    protein that makes the skin

    elastic.

    While the directions on the

    tube recommend daily use,

Burt Ensley, CEO of thecreams manufacturer,

    DermaPlus, says most people

use it at least twice a day.

Once in the morning to serve

as a protective agent for the

    skin, shielding it from wind

    and damaging UV rays from

the sun. Then at night they put

it on again to serve as a means

for providing the skin with the

    nourishment it needs.

    Dermalastyl is not

available in stores. It is only

    offered through the

    manufacturers Web site. For a

limited time, you can get a free

sample by logging on towww.dermalastyl.com or

    calling (800) 335-8312. All

you have to pay for is

    Your Home

& Gardentips, news and advice for homeowners

    (NUI) - As another rousing

    chorus of "Auld Lang Syne"

    rises up amongst partygoers this

    New Year's, many will be

    thinking about turning over a

new leaf in their exerciseroutines and eating habits. But

    there's another personal goal that

    many can feel good about

    achieving throughout the new

    year better housecleaning. If

    you've resolved to de-clutter

    your life or re-organize your

home in the new year, the

    cleaning experts at Merry Maids

have some helpful tips to help

    you succeed.

    Tackle your closet. Most

homes have at least one closet

    that's brimming with clothes

    that haven't been worn for

months. Clean out the space by

getting rid of any clothing, shoes or purses that haven't

been worn or used in the past

year. Help someone else have a

    better new year by donating

items to a local charity, or add

them to your garage sale pile.

Use the Web. Join the world

    market from your home, and

find buyers for items that you

    don't need or haven't used in a

    while. Turn your unwanted

items into someone else'streasure, and make a little extra

    cash by taking advantage of

    online auction Web sites.

Get down while you clean up.

    It's the truth sometimes

cleaning is just not fun. Make

things easier by putting on your

    favorite CD to help change

    your outlook and boost your

energy level. A few extra steps

and squats in the name of

    cleaning could also help with

    that other popular New Year's

    resolution weight loss.

Have a plan. Daunted by big

    cleaning projects? Divide and

conquer by assigning yourselfa task or room a day. Keep a

    checklist. The progress you

    make will encourage you as

you tackle the rest of your

    projects and cross things off

    your list.

    GIVE YOUR HOME THE

    CLEAN SWEEP

Protect Your Home Fromthe Winter Elements

    (NUI) - Many homeowners are

    aware of the basic do-it-yourself

    home projects one should tackle

    when preparing for the winter

    season, including caulking gaps

    around doors and installing

    programmable thermostats. But

what about projects that are just

    as important but easy to

    overlook?

    You can save time and

money by simply renting what'sneeded to complete essential

    projects that will help winterize

    your home. The following

    project ideas, supplied by The

    Home Depot Tool Rental Center,

    are four simple, yet effective,

    projects that can help increase

the lifespan of your home and

    can all be done without

    purchasing seasonal tools or

    equipment.

    Power wash and seal outside

    structures. Sealing your

    driveway and deck protects

    them from fluctuating

    temperatures as well as ice

and winter damage. Applyinga sealant gives a driveway the

    added protection it needs to

    last longer and resist

    deterioration, especially

    during the winter months.

    Alway remember to power

    conditions

    arrive, aerate your lawn to

    improve water penetration by

    poking holes into the ground.

    This allows the nutrients to

move further into soil to reach

    the roots of your grass.

    Help eliminate or prevent

the growth of mold in your

    home. The colder months are

when we seal our homes off

    from winter weather. With

    closed windows and lack of

    air exchange, the buildup of

    moisture can lead to mold

growth. Concrobium MoldControl is a great way for do-

    it-yourselfers to clean,

    eliminate and prevent the

growth of mold in the home.

    For larger spaces like attics,

    basements and crawl spaces

    that are more suseptible to

    mold, homeowners can rent

    an easy-to-use fogger for

    application.

    Clean out your gutters.

    Gutters are meant to divert

    rainwater away from the

exterior of the home, but they

    can also collect leaves and

    debris during the summer

    months. Although beautiful

    this time of year, autumn

    leaves can harm the

foundation of a house so grab

your ladder and prevent anylong-term damage from

    occuring. For more

    BARKING UP THE

    GREEN TREE

(NUI) - While many people are

aware of how their own lifestyle

affects the planet, they may be

surprised to learn how much of

    an environmental "paw print"

    their four-legged family

    members are leaving behind.

    According to Anthony

    Zolezzi, eco-entrepreneur and

    author of "How Dog Food

    Saved the Earth," there are

    many "green" changes you can

make in and around your home

to safeguard your pet's diet and

    environment.

    "When it comes to saving

our planet, the focus has always

    been on our own carbon

    footprint but I would challenge

you further to look at the carbon

"paw print" your family pets are

leaving behind, and examinetheir role in protecting our Earth

    from excessive pollution," said

    Zolezzi.

    Through Zolezzi's work,

    which involves promoting

    social responsibility and green

    programs, he got involved with

launching one of the first pet

foods on the market with U.S.

    source-verified meat and

    poultry Pet Promise.

    "When we purchase natural

    and organic products from

    family farmers who support

    sustainable agriculture, we also

    support a cleaner environment.

Our pets can help make a

    difference when we feed them

    food products sourced from

    these same family farms," said

    Zolezzi.

The sale of Pet Promise has

    helped eliminate more than 88

    million doses of antibiotics in

the food chain and 15 million

    doses of artificial growth

    hormones fed to cattle. Through

    this endeavor, Zolezzi and his

    team have helped support more

    than 1,500 U.S. family farmers

    who are committed to the

    humane treatment of animals

    and using natural and

    sustainable methods to protect

    the environment. For more

    information, visit

    www.PetPromiseInc.com.

    Here are some additional

tips to help you keep your pet's

    environment chemical-free and

    green:

Stay off the lawn. Keep your

animals away from the lawnor garden when treating them

    with fertilizers, pesticides or

    insecticides until it dries

    completely.

    Don't clean house and play

    fetch. Never allow your pet

    access to areas you are

    cleaning. Some cleaners

might only cause a mild upset

    stomach, but others could

    cause severe burns of the

    tongue, mouth and stomach.

    Keep the garage clean. Store

    all automotive products such

as oil, gas and antifreeze in

    areas away from pets. Just

    one teaspoon of antifreeze

can be deadly to a 7-pound

    cat, and less than one

tablespoon can be lethal to a

    20-pound dog.

(ARA) - Want to cover yourhome in the latest shade of

barn red or hunter green? Put

    away your paintbrush!

    Smart homeowners are

    finding that the easiest way

to get -- and keep -- todays

    fresh colors is with certified

    vinyl siding.

    Whether youre

    building the home of your

    dreams or remodeling the

home you love, you want a

    cladding with distinct color

and curb appeal. But if your

    siding requires constant

maintenance to keep up itsappearance, your dream can

    become an expensive

    nightmare. To ensure that your

vinyl siding is made to last,

make sure its backed by a

    third-party certification

    program for quality, which the

    Vinyl Siding Institute has had

    in place for a decade.

    VSIs Vinyl Siding Product

    Certification Program was

launched in 1998 as a way for

    manufacturers to certify,

    through independent testing

    and verification, that their

    products meet or exceed the

quality requirements of theASTM D3679 standard.

    Certified vinyl siding is

    subjected to a dozen different

    performance measurements and

    tests simulating wind, weather

and even the impact of a hard-

    hitting hammer.

    Products certified through

    VSIs program pass this battery

of tests and submit to twice

    yearly unannounced plant

    inspections. They also meet the

    International Building Code

    requirements for siding to be

    certified by an independent

    quality control agency.

    There are more than 1,000

    different vinyl siding products

    currently certified through

    VSIs program. Whats more,

nearly 300 different colors ofthese products have been

    certified for color retention. In

    addition to passing the quality

    requirements of ASTM D3679,

each color must undergo atwo-year, outdoor

    weathering study, to

    ensure that it meets the

    rigorous requirements of

    ASTM D6864, the color

    retention standard for

    vinyl siding.

    Sunshine, rain, or

    winds of more than 100

    miles per hour wont

    weather certified vinyl

    siding noticeably, says

    Jery Y. Huntley, VSIs

    president. Vinyl siding

    hues certified for color

retention have been testedin a variety of climates to resist

    major color changes over the

    course of time. That means

    simple, periodic washing can

    keep your siding looking as

beautiful as the day it was

    installed.

    Sedona Red. Oxford Blue.

    Irish Linen. Summer Wheat.

Those are just a few of the

    hundreds of vinyl siding colors

    certified for color retention

    through VSIs program. They

    can give your house long-

    lasting beauty, whether you

want the newest shade on the

block or are looking to preservehistoric accuracy. For a full list

    of products and colors certified

    through VSIs program, visit

(NUI) - It's a primary cause ofindoor allergens in the winter, itfilters through the air bothindoors and out, and it cancause serious health problems.Mold a dreaded houseguest, cangrow on almost any surface, especially damp ones. Thinkyou're safe?

According to the AmericanLung Association and the U.S.Consumer Product SafetyCommission, one-third to one-half of all structures have

conditions in which mold cangrow and thrive. And while the

recommended way to treatmold is by eliminating thewater or moisture source in thearea, how do you safely and

effectively remove moldthat has already grown?

Many products on themarket are eitherineffective, limited towhat type of surface

the mold is growingon or toxic. As a result, cleaning mold yourself can betaxing and even frustrating.

Red Reef Laboratories,Inc., however, has developed anew, unique system calledBioClear that utilizes RedReef's products to eliminatepathogens, reduce allergens andminimize cross-contamination.This non-invasive and highlyeffective system is still non-toxic, biodegradable and safe touse in poorly ventilated areas, making it a breakthrough in themold-cleaning market.

    And since cleaning mold is

only half the battle, Red ReefLaboratories offers these tips tokeep mold at bay in your home: Check to be sure your

indoor humidity is between30 and 60 percent. You cancontrol this with air

    conditioning and adehumidifier.

Add extra insulation toareas, such as windows, thatcreate condensation.

Be on the lookout forstanding water. Airconditioning or refrigeratordrip pans can be a problem.

Look up. Regularly checkyour ceiling for leaks ordrips.

Open doors inside yourhome, such as between

rooms and those to closets, that will help keep the aircirculating properly.

Use area rugs. These canregularly be washed, whichhelps avoid any mold growth.

    Brush Up ForWinter Driving

(NUI) - No matter where youlive, winter driving requiresextra-special attention. When thetemperatures outside fall, keeping an eye on your car'smechanical condition, beingprepared and driving cautiouslyare all critical to your personal

    safety and that of yourpassengers

The following tips fromAAA will help ensure your car isin prime operating condition. Before severe winter weatherarrives: Inspect your vehicle

thoroughly. Make sure tires areproperly inflated, fluid levelsare full, lights are all operatingproperly and engine belts andhoses are in good condition.

A common cause of cold-weather breakdowns is a weakor dead battery. Indications ofa battery that may need

replacement include a startermotor that cranks the engineslowly and headlights that dimwhen the engine speed dropsto idle.

If you are unsure about anyaspect of your car's mechanicalcondition, a local AAAApproved Auto Repair facilitywill be happy to help you.

Before you head out on the

    road, remember the following:

Check the weather conditionsalong your route beforedriving long distances.

For safety, carry a cellularphone to call for help in anemergency.

Pack a winter safety kit in yourvehicle that includes: awindow scraper or brush, aflashlight with fresh batteries,a small snow shovel, tractionmats, booster cables, a warmblanket, flares or reflectivewarning triangles, heavygloves, window-washersolvent and a first-aid kit.

    Finally, once on your way,

    practice these safe driving tips:

When driving in slipperyconditions, slow down, keep asafe distance from othervehicles and allow extra timefor all actions.

Use gentle pressure on boththe accelerator and brakepedals to prevent wheel lockupand skids.

Stop effectively on ice andsnow by applying your brakeswell in advance of the stoppingpoint.

Always fasten your seatbelt, and make certain yourpassengers are properlyrestrained as well.

When driving in rain, fog orfalling snow, reduce yourspeed, use low-beamheadlights or fog lights andincrease the distance between

your vehicle and the one aheadof you.

Make a Connection With Your Teen(NUI) - Talking with teenagersabout their health isn't always a

parent's or a teen's favoriteconversation. But parents havemore influence on their teen'shealth than they think, accordingto researchers with thePrevention Research Centers(PRC) network.

"While some adolescents arevery skillful in convincing us thatwe are no longer pertinent intheir lives, we make the mistakeof believing that," says MichaelResnick, Ph.D., an adolescenthealth researcher and director ofthe PRC at the University ofMinnesota. "The researchdefinitely contradicts thatcultural stereotype."

Dr. Resnick has found thatteenagers who feel they can talkto parents and other caring, competent adults are more likelythan other teens to be protectedfrom suicide, eating disorders, emotional distress, risky sexualbehaviors and substance abuse.

Despite some appearances, most teens say they do want closerelationships with their parentsand care what they think.

"The parents sort of set thepatterns," said Kristina Ann

Jareno, 16, a high-school seniorin Long Beach, Calif., whobelongs to the youth advisoryboard of the PRC at theUniversity of California at LosAngeles/RAND. She says shesees parents making decisionsabout nutrition and physicalactivity that affect her friends, such as choosing whether toemphasize sports, to drivechildren to activities and topurchase healthy foods.

Although friends, oldersiblings and older cousins arerole models, Jareno said herparents are the reason she studieshard in school and stays away

from negative peer pressure."My parents are the most

influential people in my life," shesaid.

Mark Schuster, M.D., Ph.D.,director of the UCLA/RANDPRC, provides the following tipsto help parents discuss topicssuch as fitness, nutrition, sex andsubstance use with teens: Start talking about health when

    children are young, and keep

the lines of communicationopen. Never tell a child he or

she is too young to ask aquestion, but use age-appropriate answers.

Instead of criticizing a teen allthe time, notice your childdoing something good, andoffer a compliment.

Ask questions that can open aconversation, such as "Whatdo you think about that?" and"What's on your mind?"

Let your teen know why youwant to have the conversationwith phrases like "I want tounderstand the things you'regoing through," and "There is alot of misinformation outthere."

Listen without interrupting or jumping in with advice.Rephrase what your child saysto be sure you understand whatyour child means, and let himor her know you are listening.

Help your children learn tomake decisions on their own.Let them come up with optionsfor solutions, go through theoptions with them, and havethem pick one that seems best.

Then you can chime in withyour thoughts.

Teach your childrenassertiveness skills that willhelp them avoid unhealthybehaviors.

Never underestimate a parent'spower of example.

The PRC network comprises33 academic research centersaround the country, supported bythe Centers for Disease Controland Prevention. Eight of thecenters focus primarily onadolescent health. For moreinformation, visithttp://www.cdc.gov/prc.

    (NUI) - Anyone who's kept a

    crisp, clean Babe Ruth rookie

    card tucked away for safe

    keeping knows about the

    benefits of purchasing a classic

item it retains value over time

    and can provide a significant

    return on the original

    investment.Whether searching for a

prized oil painting at an auction,

    looking for antique furniture at

an estate sale or purchasing a

    luxury automobile through a

    certified pre-owned program,

    more people every day are

    finding value in classic, high-

    quality products. One example

    is a high-performance car such

    as a Mercedes-Benz. Seventy-

    four percent of all Mercedes-

Benz vehicles sold in the United

States are still on the road today

    a testament to what constitutes

    enduring value and quality.Finding a classic isn't

    always about buying something

    brand new. Whether you're

    searching for a top-of-the-line

    w a t c h ,

    jewelry or

    a n

    automobile,

    it makes

    sense that

    the best-

    k n o w n

    b r a n d smake some of the best pre-

    owned products. However,

    finding a quality pre-owned

vehicle can be tricky. Here are a

few tips that can help make this

    process easier:

    Do your research. A wealth

    of information about pre-

    owned vehicles is available

    on the Internet, from pricing

the blue book value at Web

    sites like www.kbb.com to

    getting vehicle history reports

    from outlets like

    www.carfax.com.

Review products in person. After a little background

    research, it's important to

    follow up with an in-person

    visit. Using the information

    that you

    found online,

    in the

    newspaper or

    by word of

    m o u t h ,

    c a r e f u l l y

    examine the

    interior andexterior of your potential

    vehicle. Don't forget to look

    underneath the hood and

    under the car. Take the

vehicle for a test drive, and be

sure to leave the radio off so

that you can listen to the

    engine.

    Make sure the car is

    inspected by a professional.

    Before you write that check,

    have your mechanic inspect

    the vehicle. Or, for additional

    peace of mind, consider

    purchasing your new car

through a certified, pre-owned program such as the

    one offered by Mercedes-

    Benz. Through it, vehicles

    must meet stringent criteria

    and pass a rigorous inspection

    process including a bumper-

    to-bumper inspection of the

    appearance and mechanics of

    the car.Making sure your

    vehicle has received a

    thorough inspection will save

    you time and money.

"Because only selectvehicles are eligible for the

    program, our clients are finding

    that using the Certified Pre-

    Owned program is an excellent

    way to experience the

    performance, safety and style of

Mercedes at a price similar to

    some new, non-luxury vehicles,"

    said Niles Barlow, General

    Manager of Pre-Owned & Fleet

    Operations, Mercedes-Benz

    USA.

    Finding a timeless classic,

such as a luxury automobile, at a

    significantly reduced cost can be

highly rewarding. For moreinformation on certified, pre-

    owned vehicles, visit

(NUI) - While it has long been a

    problem in hospitals

    nationwide, Staphylococcus,

    commonly known as a staph

    infection, has become a

    threatening issue in another

    frequented location the hallways

    of schools.

    Several high schools in the

Washington, D.C. area recentlyreported multiple cases of

    M e t h i c i l l i n - R e s i s t a n t

    Staphylococcus (MRSA), a

strain of staph that is considered

    a "superbug" and extremely

    drug-resistant. The alarming

    incidents have had many parents

    and concerned community

    members wondering how to

    keep future occurrences of staph

    from becoming a daily concern.

    "Keeping our children and

    teachers safe from contagious

    bacteria like staph is highly

    important especially with the

news of outbreaks across thecountry," said Dr. Claus

    Wagner-Bartak, president of

    Red Reef Laboratories. "Our

    family of BioClear products has

    been specifically designed to

    combat harmful bacteria like

    staph in a non-toxic,

    biodegradable manner."

    Staph bacteria is commonly

    spread through close contact and

    by indirectly touching infected

    clothing. According to the

    Centers for Disease Control and

    Prevention, millions of

Americans carry staph bacteriaon their skin and the inside of

    their nose without any

    symptoms or infection. But

    staph can easily pass through

    open cuts, leading to painful

    bumps, and more serious

    conditions such as pneumonia

and toxic shock which is why

    good hygiene is critical in

    preventing staph. Adhering to

the following tips will help keep

    you safe:

    Keep your hands clean by

    washing thoroughly with

soap and water or using an

    alcohol-based hand sanitizerthroughout the day.

Make sure to keep cuts and

    scrapes clean and covered

with a bandage until they are

    healed.

    Avoid coming in contact

    with other people's wounds

    or bandages.

    Don't share personal items

    such as towels or razors,

    which have been known to

    commonly harbor staph

    bacteria.

    When you are around

    someone who has a staph

    infection, there are additional

steps that can be taken to avoid

    spreading the infection to family

    and friends:

    Clean surfaces daily with a

    safe and effective

    disinfectant such as Red

    Reef's family of BioClear

    products, which also help

    contain and kill mold and

    other harmful bacteria and

    viruses.

    Use a solution of one

    tablespoon of bleach mixed

with one quart of water to

    disinfect all non-disposable

items that may have come in

    contact with the infected

    area, wound drainage or

    soiled supplies.

    Wash soiled linens and

    clothes with hot water and

    laundry detergent, and dry on

    a hot setting.

    Find a Clinical

    Trial With a

Click(NUI) - When ShirleyFeigenbaum was diagnosed with arare form of breast cancer, herfuture looked grim. "From thelittle that I heard of inflammatorybreast cancer, which is what I had,the prognosis was very bad,"

Feigenbaum said. "I did not expectto live more than three months."

That was four years ago.Today, Feigenbaum creditsclinical research with saving herlife. When she agreed to take partin a clinical trial to help futuregenerations fight the disease, shehelped find a cure for her ownillness as well.

People like Feigenbaum whovolunteer for clinical trials aresometimes called "everydayheroes" for their willingness to trynew drugs and medical devices. But for many people, the simpletask of finding a clinical trial canbe overwhelming.

That's why The Center forInformation and Study on ClinicalResearch Participation (CISCRP)created www.SearchClinicalTrials.org (SCT), a new online resourcethat scans the Web and compilesinformation and results fromthousands of clinical trials in oneplace. Developed by CISCRP incollaboration with Fast Search &Transfer, a prominent search-technology developer, andePharmaSolutions, a renownedclinical services provider, the freesite helps users find clinicalresearch information quickly andeasily.

With patient recruitmentbeing one of the biggest barriers tothe timely completion of clinicaltrials, SCT helps bridge the gapbetween volunteers and theclinical research process.

"SCT's centralized databasegives users the tools they need tolearn about clinical research andits role in the health of their family, their community and themselves,"said CISCRP President and CEODiane Simmons. "It is our hopethat SCT will help visitors cutthrough the clutter of informationabout clinical research and findwhat they need to make informeddecisions about clinical researchparticipation."

SCT users also will find easy-to-use features that help narrowthe search for clinical trials bydisease type and geographiclocation and provide informationabout trial sponsors, phases, recruitment status and eligibilityrequirements. Online links tocurrent medical news, plus a list ofquestions to ask beforevolunteering, take users throughthe first steps of starting theclinical trial search.

"We believe SCT gives usersa valuable tool for makinginformed decisions about clinicalresearch," Simmons said."CISCRP is delighted to make itavailable to the thousands ofpeople who search the Interneteveryday for news andinformation about clinical trialsand clinical researchparticipation."

STEPS TO A HEALTHY NEW YOU(NUI) - At the beginning of

every new year, many decide to

turn over a new leaf when itcomes to their general health.

    However, that renewed interest

    in bettering oneself doesn't

often last long. According to a

recent study, 50 percent of those

who set a New Year's resolution

for themselves abandon it by the

end of January and 90 percent

call it quits by the end of the

    year's first quarter.

    Rather than being part of

    these unfortunate statistics, a

renewed, long-term resolve toget fit and feel great should be

    something everyone strives for,

    according to celebrity fitness

    trainer Valerie Waters.

"New Year's is a great time

of year to set priorities and

focus on good health for the

entire year. The key is getting

    into a healthy routine," Waters

    said.

    Waters provided these tips

to help you stick to a routine:

Set a goal and deadline. Fewthings will get you more

    committed than a deadline.

    Know where you are. Before

    you start your regimen, take

    your measurements and

    weight. Write them down to

    monitor your progress.

    Know where you're going.

Set a clear and specific goal

    that's measureable, so you can

    stay focused and know when

    you've reached your goal.

Eat right. As part of a healthy

    style of eating, a 1/4-cup

    serving of delicious California

    Raisins helps to meet the

recommended goal of eight to13 daily fruit servings.

    Raisins deliver antioxidants

    and potassium to reduce

    oxidation that helps to prevent

    high blood pressure and

    plaque buildup in the arteries,

    which lowers cholesterol

    levels and contributes to heart

    and colon health. Try this

recipe for a healthful snack to

    jumpstart the new year.

I dreamed I had an interview

    with God.

    So you would like to

    interview me? God asked.

If you have the time I said.

    God smiled. "My time is

    eternity. "What questions do you

    have in mind for me?

    What surprises you most

    about humankind?God answered... That they

    get bored with childhood, they

rush to grow up, and then long to

be children again. That they lose

    their health to make money...and

then lose their money to restore

    their health. That by thinking

    anxiously about the future, they

forget the present, such that they

live in neither the present nor the

future. That they live as if they

will never die, and die as though

    they had never lived.

God's hand took mine and we

    were silent for a while.

And then I asked... As a parent, what are some of life's

    lessons you want your children

    to learn?

    To learn they cannot make

anyone love them. All they can

do is let themselves be loved. To

learn that it is not good to

    compare themselves to others."

To learn to forgive by practicing

forgiveness. To learn that it only

takes a few seconds to open

    profound wounds in those they

love, and it can take many years

to heal them. To learn that a richperson is not one who has the

most, but is one who needs the

least. To learn that there are

    people who love them dearly,

but simply have not yet learned

how to express or show their

feelings. To learn that two people

can look at the same thing and

see it differently. To learn that it

is not enough that they forgive

one another, but they must also

    forgive themselves."

Thank you for your time. I

    said humbly, Is there anything

else you would like your children

to know?God smiled and said, Just

know that I am here... always.

    DECEMBER 2007YOUR NEWSPAPERPAGE 14

(NUI) - With a minimum workday of 8

hours and an average commute time of 24

minutes each way, working parents are

seeing less and less of their children. As a

result, more parents are opting for family-

based vacations to reconnect and catch up

    with their loved ones.

    "Americans with children are seeking

to use their vacations to reconnect with the

    family unit," said Peter Yesawich,

chairman and CEO of Pepperdine, Brown

& Russell, a leading travel, leisure and

    entertainment public relations firm.

"Consumers want to reconnect with what

they feel is really important in their lives."So, the 71 percent of parents who

wish they could spend more time as a

family are in search of the perfect family

vacation. Those who are looking for a

departure from the usual treks to Disney

World should consider a unique, festive

    way to vacation this winter.

    The Rocky Mountaineer winter train

captures the dream of a snow-capped

holiday season as it travels from

    Vancouver, British Columbia, to Banff,

Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies with

    transfers available to Calgary, Alberta.

Families can reconnect during two full

days amid the pristine winter scenery.

The train exudes a festive feel in thewinter with views of glacier-capped

    mountain peaks and snow-filled valleys.

    Additionally, holiday entertainment, gifts

    for the children, holiday-themed meals

and an appearance by Santa add to the

charm. Adults can also embrace the

holiday spirit by dancing to live jazz in a

    specialty bar car.

In a private dining room onboard,

guests enjoy an la carte menu of bi-

    regional cuisine, seasonal dishes and

    award-winning local wines. Eggnog and

mulled wine are even available to those

    truly festive passengers.

Families also enjoy winter fun when

they get off the train. They can take part in

an array of winter activities such as dogsledding, skiing, skating, Native American

winter crafts and even a snowball fight.

    A Rocky Mountaineer vacation is

even more affordable this holiday season,

during which one child between the ages

of 2 and 11 years of age travel free with

    two full-paying adults in GoldLeaf

Service. Vacation packages on which the

    special is available include: Winter

    Wonderland, Canadian Rockies Winter

    Excursion, ATruly Canadian Christmas or

    Winter in the Canadian Rockies.
