A STOCK THAT IS BREAKING OUT SO THAT

YOU WON’T

It was only after my long career as a pharmacological scientist that I decided to pick the

biotech and pharmaceutical stocks as the hottest industries of the year.

That, of course, is not true – the part about my career as a scientist, that is.

But I have been talking about, writing about, and – most importantly – investing in stocks for

my clients and myself for a long time. And you do not have to be a scientist or doctor to

invest in scientific or medical progress.

Of the nearly 3,800 stocks I cover in my Best Stocks Now app, most do not get white hot

overnight. Neither do they lose all their value overnight.

So I look for industries first, then companies within those industries, when I am selecting

investments. And I use my Best Stocks Now app.

That is how I found Anacor Pharmaceuticals — ANAC.

Page 2: December 20, 2013 Password for Free Newsletter archives is ...files.ctctcdn.com/f97a0e9e001/8b6a334c-13a7-4c55... · Over the past three years ANAC has delivered 49.5% per year to

I didn’t hear about ANAC from a televised talking head. Nor did I read about in the Wall

Street Journal or Barron’s. I found it with my Best Stocks Now app.

ANAC is in the Atopic Dermatitis business. Eczema. One of their products is getting some

good results and some even say it could be a new standard of treatment for this disease.

But just because something is a good company in a good industry with a good – even great

– product, it does not necessarily mean it is a good stock.

ANAC became public in 2010 at $5 per share. I noticed it three months ago when it hit #23

on my Best Stocks Now app. Looking at the chart, we see it has a powerful saucer pattern

from April until Mid-August of this year when ANAC broke out and rose up the ranks in the

Best Stocks Now app.

Let’s look at the company a bit more closely:

Page 3: December 20, 2013 Password for Free Newsletter archives is ...files.ctctcdn.com/f97a0e9e001/8b6a334c-13a7-4c55... · Over the past three years ANAC has delivered 49.5% per year to

Performance

ANAC has a market cap of just $665 million. It’s no Merck (MRK) or Johnson & Johson (JNJ). If

it were, we would not be talking about it right now. Smaller biotechs have been ruling the

market this year.

Over the past three years ANAC has delivered 49.5% per year to investors.

And over the past year, ANAC has returned an incredible 221% to investors.

Now, these numbers do not make ANAC an automatic ticket to Bill Gunderson’s top 300 Best

Stocks Now. However, a stock has to have the performance numbers. And ANAC gets an

‘A+’ momentum grade.

Valuation

Because ANAC is so new, it is difficult to do a valuation on this stock. Of course the potential

is huge. I have an assistant who insists his potential for meeting and marrying Angelina Jolie is

huge.

But performance counts more than potential.

Stock Chart

A breakout may not sound good when you’re referring to eczema but when you’re looking

at the stock chart, it’s a great. I’m long the stock and I’ve already had some huge gains.

You want to know what a great chart looks like. Just look at the ANAC chart.

Because it is a small cap with a relatively short record or performance, this is not a stock for

widows and orphans. This is part of an aggressive portfolio. I never make any one position

more than 3-4% of my overall portfolio.

A lot of people misunderstand what it means to be aggressive: Yes, of course it means you

are going to put a portion of your portfolio down on stocks with a lot of volatility.

But that is only half of it. The other half of is time. Aggressive investors have to watch their

stocks and the market every day.

That does not mean you have to be a day trader. Or should be. It only means that just

because you want to take three weeks off to bicycle through France, your stock is not going

to take off with you.

Of the 3,771 stocks that are currently in my app database, ANAC comes in at number 44.

Follow me on Twitter or check the Twitter feed on my website to find out when I change my

opinion on the stock.

FED Chairman, Ben Bernanke presided over his last FOMC meeting this past week. All eyes

were on the man that has kept monetary policy on an all you can eat diet for the last five

years.

The Fed’s balance sheet waistline has ballooned from $1 trillion to $4 trillion since 2008. It is

the biggest expansion in the history of the world.

Has it worked?

The S&P 500 was at 666 on March of 2009. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 6,469.

The U.S financial system was on the verge of collapse, and lending was completely frozen

up. Financial institutions all over the globe were stuffed full of bad debt that was worth

pennies on the dollar.

Bear Stearns was no more. Lehman Bros. was BK.

Countrywide Financial was forced down Bank of America’s throat along with Merrill Lynch.

Those were difficult balance sheets to swallow, but were they too big to fail?

Gold was soaring while the dollar was sinking.

Foreclosure notices were being mailed out all across America as housing prices plunged.

Pink slips were a common occurrence as unemployment rose to levels not seen since the

great depression.

There was plenty of blame to be passed around.

From a government that forced institutions to loan to high risk borrowers, to the Wall Street

bankers who packaged those loans and spread them all across the world.

Like a bad virus that would eventually erupt into an epidemic.

Ben Bernanke was a man who had studied the great depression in depth. He understood

what was done wrong, and what would should have been done instead.

Today, the S&P 500 is over 1,800. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 16,000.

Home prices have bottomed out, values are rising once again, and home loans are being

made.

Bank of America and J P Morgan are hitting new 52 week highs. The U.S. dollar has held

steady while gold has plunged.

Inflation is tame and unemployment continues to drop.

Not everything is all roses however. Our debt ceiling is now $16.7 trillion as fiscal policy has

not been anywhere as creative as monetary policy.

Was Ben Bernanke a hero or a villain?

It is pretty hard to argue with results.

Bernanke went out with a flourish this past week as he finally announced a taper, but kept

the promise of loose monetary policy as far as the eye can see.

The Fed’s bond purchase program has been cut from $85 billion per month to $75 billion per

month. That is akin to going on a diet that only gives up the fudge sauce and whip cream on

top of the cheesecake.

Sounds like my kind of diet!

Of course the market loved it. Here is how we finished the week:

Despite the big bump in the U.S. stock market, emerging markets, bonds, and gold were down once

again this past week!

These are three asset classes that I have kept you out of ALL YEAR.

And how have those asset classes stacked up this year.

Not neighborhoods that I would want to hang out in!

If ever there was a year to be in the right asset classes and out of the wrong ones, this is it.

Asset Allocation anyone? No thanks….

Speaking of asset classes, let’s check the current ranking of the asset classes. I rank 34 different asset

classes (including a lot of stock and bond oriented ones) on a daily basis. I generally focus on the top

8-10. Here is how they currently stack up:

Top 8 (3 wks. ago) Top 8 (2 wks. ago) Top 8 (This week)

When 2013 began it was small cap U.S. stocks at the top of the leader board. As 2013 comes to a

close, it is still small cap U.S. stocks leading the hit parade.

Add in the technology and micro-cap stocks and you still have the leadership in this current market.

Mid and large cap U.S. stocks round out the top.

One-year chart of the NASDAQ:

The Nasdaq continues to break out to new highs.

DOMESTIC STOCK related.

Not much change again here. Commodities and emerging markets have been horrible all year long.

It will change at some point in time, but I see no evidence of this yet.

The four year, nine month old BULL MARKET is still intact. I am not a buy and holder. I am a market

timer. I have kept you in throughout this current bull. It will come to an end at some point, but I just

don’t see much evidence of that at all yet. Therefore, I continue to keep the GREEN FLAG flying on

the stock market.

Bill Gunderson’s Model Portfolio for Conservative Growth Investors:

This model is made up of mostly large and mid-cap companies that I consider suitable for

investors who have a conservative growth risk profile. Time horizon of at least 3-5 years would

be appropriate. Large cap stocks have underperformed small caps in 2013.

This portfolio is up 22.3% year-to-date. This net of an annual mgt. fee of 2.0% and all $7

trades. I sold DAL, PCYC, and REGN this past week. No new buys. Cash level is now 17.4%.

ACTUAL PORTFOLIOS MAY VARY DEPENDING ON START TIME AND ACTUAL PORTFOLIO MIX.

Conservative Growth Model 22.32% *YTD After Fees

I bought some more TSCO on Friday’s breakout.

Bill Gunderson’s INCOME/GROWTH Model Portfolio

This portfolio is for investors seeking Income along with the possibility of Growth. This is a good

mix for retirees who are seeking a CD alternative-albeit with greater risk. This portfolio

currently has an average yield of 4.2%.

This portfolio is now up 19.16% YTD and 28.31% since its August 5, 2011 inception. This works

out to an annualized rate of 11.67%. Bonds anyone? This is another testament to the

importance of being in the right asset classes at the right time, and out of the wrong ones.

I made not changes to this portfolio this past week. Cash level in this portfolio is now 15.8%.

ACTUAL PORTFOLIOS MAY VARY depending on start time and actual stock mix.

401-K Section (How is your 401k) portfolio doing?

Everyone has different choices to them in their 401-ks. The choices basically fall into several broad categories

however: Large Cap, Mid-Cap, Small-Cap, Govt. Bond, Corp. Bond, Inflation Protected Bond, International,

Emerging Market, and maybes sectors like technology, natural resources, etc.

I have added a number of mutual funds to my Best Stocks Now database that are representative of the various

categories of funds that are available in most 401k plans. I grade them on a daily basis.

If you have a wide selection of mutual funds in your plan, here is my current basic recommendation: This

portfolio is up 26.55% year-to-date (net of all fees and trading costs). I sold the Fidelity Energy Fund this past

week. Cash position is now 12.7%. I have also added to alternative funds to the ones that have been closed

recently.
