Christmas gift exchanges can be orga-nized in many different ways, but the secret is to choose a theme that will keep things simple.Have you ever tried an alphabet exchange? Tap into the creative spirit of your guests by choosing a letter of the alphabet to be the theme for the exchange. For example, all the par-ticipants must bring a gift starting with the letter “B”. You could also do an exchange using the same principle but this time with a colour, preferably a bright one, in order to add a touch of gaiety to your family gathering.
An exchange of used gifts is sure to keep all your guests wide awake. It’s “re-gifting” gone legit! After all, every-body has something they’d like to get rid of, such as that bizarre piece of pot-tery bought on an impulse at the local flea market. Well, the opportunity to finally pass it on to someone else is here at last. Once your guests arrive, number the gifts and organize a draw. Donors must explain why they no longer want to keep the object and the reason they think it will better suit its new owner —you’d better ensure that all your guests have a good sense of humour!Children could also have their own gift exchange with surprise bags filled with toys from the dollar store, which they can choose by drawing a num-ber. Now all that’s left to do is to capture the joyful expressions as your guests open their gifts!
Fun ideas for Christmas gift exchanges
A gift exchange of used objects can result in some hilarious moments.

Christmas will soon be with us, and maybe as you’ve been thinking about spoiling your loved ones you’ve been feeling that something is missing. What is the root cause of that feeling? Perhaps it’s that for many of us, Christmas is just a commercial holiday. We fling money around like it’s going out of style, stores are all about the profit, and we forget that the season used to be a celebration of love and wonder. But what can we do to underline this event in a different way? What if we did something completely different, such as a little extra something to soothe the heart, as much for ourselves as for the recipi-ent? A humanitarian gift is a beautiful way to show and share our values with our children.Sponsoring a child can be a truly stimu-lating deed. Think about it: you could transform the lives of children, families, and communities around the world. One or two weeks after you register for a sponsorship, you will receive a welcome kit including a photograph and personal information about the child you are spon-soring, as well as various other facts about his or her community and country. After this, you will be kept informed of their progress through yearly activity reports, and of course you can communicate with them at all times.You could also give your support to a charitable organization. There’s cer-tainly no lack of choice! As Christmas approaches, food banks abound in well-
identified spots where the general public can donate non-perishable items. You can also demonstrate your generosity by giving the amount of your choice to an organization that is particularly close to your heart. You’ll soon realize that the quality of your Christmas holidays can be greatly improved with a few selfless gestures.

Some smells seem to be permanently engraved in our memories. Scents synony-mous with our fondest childhood memories can take us back through the years in the blink of an eye. A room filled with the scent of cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg will instant-ly bring to mind Grandma’s gingerbread cookies or Dad’s hot chocolate sprinkled with cinnamon.That’s probably why we rush to stock up with holiday spices and foods that will fill our homes with exotic fragrances. Just think of the oranges we used to find in the bottom of our Christmas stockings, a throwback to earlier days when citrus fruits were precious, rare treats. Indeed, sticking a few cloves into an orange will fill a room with a rich perfume, both sweet and spicy and most definitely Christmassy.
To really get into the holiday spirit you can always rely on the wonders of Mother Nature. Start with the fir tree, the king of the forest. To ornament your living room with one of these fragrant beauties, choose a balsam fir — its delicious scent makes it the ideal Christmas tree. Other plants and flowers are also great Christmas traditions:• The poinsettia, also known as the Christmas star, is easily recognized by its impressive, bright red bracts;
• Holly, with its prickly leaves and red berries, which make it the Christmas symbol par excellence;
• The Christmas cactus, which bears magnifi-cent flowers on the tips of its branches;
• Mistletoe, hung from the ceiling and under which tradition demands that two people must kiss.
