A Friday evening crash near Enumclaw took the lives of two young men.
According to the King County Sheriff ’s Office the single-vehicle crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Southeast 432 and 284th Avenue Southeast, known also as the pickle factory road.
Driving the 2001 Volkswagen GTI was 19-year-old Justin Glasco. His 20-year-old passenger was Alfredo Gonzalez. Both were from Enumclaw and died as a result of the accident.
According to the sheriff ’s office report, both were wearing seat belts and speed was a factor in the crash.
The sheriff ’s office reported there was no ice on the road at the time of the incident.
At the scene of the crash it appeared the vehicle left the road, hit a fence line and crashed into a large tree in the front yard of a home.
The sheriff ’s office reported no further investigation of the crash is being conducted.

The city of Enumclaw has received more than a half-million dollars that will be used during the coming year to provide Seman-ski Street motorists with a much smoother ride.
City Administrator Chris Searcy announced the news during the
Nov. 25 meeting of the City Council. The state’s Transpor-tation Improvement Board has awarded the city a $507,000 grant, Searcy said, to be used solely for work on Semanski.
The only catch is the city must provide $90,000 in match-ing funds. Searcy noted there is $105,000 set aside in next year’s
budget to satisfy the TIB require-ment.
The grant money will pay for an overlay of new pavement on Se-manski Street from Griffin Avenue south to Elmont Avenue.
While he was discussing cash coming the city’s way, Search noted
the city has also been awarded a Community Development Block Grant in the sum of $97,000. The money will be used in 2014 to provide
upgrades at McFarland Park. Specifically, the city plans to
refurbish sidewalks and pathways in and around the park and take care of some “hazard trees” that are
becoming a nuisance or a safety hazard.
Later in the meeting of the 25th, the council signed off on a proj-ect completed this year with TIB money that was originally issued in July 2012. The money was for side-walk and paving improvements; the work began in July of this year and was completed in November.
A bid in the amount of nearly $658,000 was accepted so Hoff-man Construction could improve sidewalks on Semanski Street, do pavement overlays on 244th Avenue Southeast and Battersby Avenue and improve both Kibler Avenue and Bailey Street.

Franciscan Health System has been supporting new mothers with breast-feed-ing challenges for nearly two decades and now has expanded the services of its lactation program to Enumclaw’s St. Elizabeth
Hospital. According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, breast-feeding is one of the most effec-tive preventive measures mothers can take to protect their health and the health
of their children. Under the Affordable Care Act, breast-feeding support, supplies and counseling are now part of women’s pre-ventative services that must be covered by commercial insurance plans at no cost
to the policy holder. “We know that breast
milk is the ‘best first food’ for babies and helps them avoid various illnesses and medical problems,” said Sonja Dahl, lactation coor-dinator for Franciscan
Women’s Care. “Many mothers don’t realize that breast-feeding is a learned skill and doesn’t come natu-rally. That’s where we can help.”
Franciscan Lactation Services includes: support from international board-certified lactation consul-tants, breast pump rental or
purchase and information on breast-feeding supplies and accessories.
Inpatient consultations are available Wednesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Hospital. To make an appointment call at 253-382-8580. Breast-feeding classes are available by calling 1-888-825-3227.

(Make Checks Payable to: POM-Neighbors in Need)
By Britt NelsonDirector, Plateau Outreach Ministries
While POM’s mission is to help neighbors build bridges out of crisis, it is hard to pour the foundation to that bridge without taking care of basics such as food, clothing and shelter. The toughest of these is shelter.
Some of our clients need help with rent because a job loss or an emergency medical expense consumed their rent budget. Sometimes people need assistance in nding housing that will let them escape domestic violence. Sometimes the need is less costly housing that ts the family’s budget. But the most challenging situations are when people truly have no place to go. Those who fall into this situation often have no family, no friends, no support network and often no income. It reminds you of the Christmas story – no room at the inn.
And like the innkeepers in the Christmas story, even in the coldest, darkest nights, we had to send such people away. We could provide a phone number or the name of the closest shelter in Tacoma or Seattle. There were closer “freezing night” shelters in Auburn and Puyallup, but they required a bus trek and even then, getting in was a gamble. As the doors closed each evening at the Enumclaw senior center, the handful of homeless went out into the cold. Some went to cars, others went to tents. All headed into the frigid night air rather than the warmth of a home.
For years POM and our supporting churches debated and struggled with this. Today, we are thankful beyond measure to the churches of the Plateau Ministerial Association who decided to take action. Together with over 100 volunteers, the churches, in
partnership with POM, are making a winter shelter available for our neighbors on the plateau. Our goal is to give people a warm, safe place for the winter nights and case management resources to achieve longer term help through POM’s emergency assistance.
“Jennifer” is an example of those who can bene t. This young woman came to POM with two bags and a backpack as her only possessions. She needed to see a case worker at the state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to get into a long-term program. She also needed a place to stay until that program starts because she is currently living on the street. Through POM case management, we were able to help her get to DSHS to connect with the assistance she needs to stabilize her future. We were also thankful that we could invite her back to POM to board the evening shuttle to a winter shelter here on the plateau. Jennifer was very grateful for a warm meal and a place to stay. The next day she shared how nice it was to sleep until she woke up herself and not be awakened by someone asking her to leave. We hope we gave her hope.
This week especially, we are very aware of the cold. Because of your warm generosity, we can help people into a winter shelter and also assist them in making a plan for a better future. This ability is the gift of a community rich in compassion for ALL our neighbors, especially those who have the least. Thank you!
The Winter Shelter will run from December 1st through February 28th. 6:30 pm registration and sign-in; 7:00 pm shuttle from POM-Marshall Street entrance.

Offering new and used appliances, repairs and service calls, Doug Reynolds launched American Appliance in October.
Aside from selling both new and previ-ously-owned items, Reynolds of fers appliance repairs either in his shop or in customers’ homes; and, catering to the do-it-your-selfer, he sells parts. Pre-owned appliances come with a 90-day warranty and in-home service calls will run a customer $76.
Reynolds emphasizes that dryer inefficiency can often be traced to dirty dryer vents, rather than the machine. To solve that problem, he offers duct cleaning as one of his services.

The middle of Dec-ember means the celebra-tion of the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year. For garden-ers this means that by the end of the month, the sun will set later each day and bulbs and buds will begin to stir in a slow wake up toward spring.
This is part two of cre-ating and celebrating the winter garden. Last week, I wrote about choosing a site, (one you can see from indoors or near the entry), adding outdoor lighting and choosing a focal point plant. Now it is time to consider some of the best plant material for winter gardens.
Top plant for winter color: Heavenly hellebores – for indoor and outdoor color
Hellebores are drought-, shade- and deer-resistant perennials. Once known
as “the Christmas rose” or the “Lenten Rose,” today hellebores are new and improved with larger, more colorful blooms that can bedazzle the garden all winter long.
In western Washington the wholesale grower Skagit Gardens has been providing hellebores that can take the place of poinsettias as indoor Christmas gift plants. You can now find the white-blooming hellebore Jacob potted up and wrapped in festive red foil to give as an easy-to-grow gift plant for indoor enjoyment.
Americans are finally catching up to the Europeans who have made Hellebore gif t plants a Christmas tradition. The advantage of giv-ing a potted helle-bore over a potted poinsettia is that
the hellebore can go right out into the garden imme-diately after the holidays continue to bloom and grow for many winters to come.
White-blooming hel-lebores may be the most popular as holiday gift plants but there is now a rainbow of hellebore varieties that bloom deep purple, green, pink, spot-ted, splotched, peach and ruby red. Hellebores
have been cross bred and improved to become the perfect plant for west-ern Washington winter gardens. Look for locally grown hellebores later this spring from the Gold Collection that offer not only impressive blooms but also more compact plants with attractive, evergreen foliage. Exciting new plants like these hel-lebores are just one more reason to give a gift cer-tificate to a local nursery.

Recession, housing crisis were in place prior to the Bush administration
Editor’s note: the following is in response to a letter printed in the Nov. 27 edition of The Courier-Herald.
Ah, Lee, Lee, you got to let go, man.
So, let’s review once again.(Full disclosure, I am not a real
fan of many of the Bush policies but respect the man and respect history.)
The “Bush recession” actually started a long time before he took the oath of office. The signs were clear at least a year before and Clinton knew about the coming crash of the
tech bubble but did and said nothing cause the next Republican would get tagged for it. Democrat politics at its best. This was around the same time Clinton was caught selling mis-sile technology to the communist Chinese (who last month announced they can now hit any U.S. city with a nuke) for campaign funds. The high-est unemployment rates in Bush’s entire eight years in office was his last at 7.8 percent, compared to President Obama’s low of (officially) 8.1 percent, so far. Six years later the official rate is about 8 percent, but if you use the same metrics as the Bush era it’s 13 to 15 percent. Unemployment in the first (nearly) four years of Obama’s presidency was higher than that of any sin-gle month in president Bush’s eight years in office and it’s not getting
better. Methodologies and reporting policies mysteriously changed under “I Won.” Imagine that.
As to the housing crash, let’s see who ordered the mortgage lenders to loan money to anyone, especially if they demonstrably couldn’t pay it back…anyone? Bueller? Clinton, Democrat Congress, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Bush gave seven speeches within a year of taking office asking the Congress to rein in F/F to stop the disaster. Barney Frank (D), the Congressional head of F/F, called him a racist.
So Lee, 1) ya got to move into the 21st century and look at what’s what over a half a decade later. And 2) how’s that “hope and change” work-ing out for ya?

After the Edward Snowden revelations, an embarrassed President Obama, who campaigned for government trans-parency, is reshaping his surveillance policies – secretly. Isn’t this hypocritical? The answer, surprisingly, is no.
President Obama has become aware of the reality of the presidency. What is promised on the campaign trail does not always factor out into reality. Decisions and events of previous presidents force the new president to conform to the new norm. It’s easy to criticize a policy, and but anoth-
er problem altogether to change it.
President Obama has to do what every president has had to do since John Adams replaced George Washington – adapt.
Past precedents shape any president’s
power. Because of the nature of government and the checks and balances put in place by the Constitution, it is hard to bring about change. It’s like turning around a supertanker, which often requires 10 miles before a 180-degree turn can be made. That’s as true of a small town mayor as it is for the most powerful leader in the world. Government is meant to be inefficient and it requires a great deal of effort and patience to change direction.
America’s sense of security was deeply shaken by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. As a result of this event, govern-ment became more concerned with secrecy and infor-mation gathering. Secret data collection is now a multi-billion dollar operation. Offices are scattered across the nation in upscale business parks, watching and listening to the world’s and the U.S. public’s electronic noise, trying to find the next terrorist who wants to wreak havoc on Americans at home. That is the legacy created by 9/11 and the Bush administration’s reaction to that event.
President Obama can now tweak the structure as he is trying to do, but he does not have the power or the will to tear the whole structure down. There are too many bureaucratic, political and economic forces that now have an interest in preserving the status quo to bring about immediate change.
Another example of this is the Department of Education. Several conservative presidents have campaigned to dis-mantle this department, but have been unsuccessful. Now conservatives don’t even talk about it. The Department of Education is here to stay.
The same can be said of Social Security, Medicare and even ObamaCare. They’re now in place, and no matter how many bills are passed by the Republican House, it’s not going away, like it or not. That’s the reality of how the government works.
Programs get built up and it takes a tremendous

This bird’s eye view of the town of Ravensdale was taken prior to the 1915 explosion which devastated the community. The photo is looking northeasterly toward a row of homes which still stand on Ravensdale Way as it parallels the railroad tracks. The existing mainline tracks can be seen in the middle left of the photo amidst a number of old growth stumps. The town was first called Leary in honor of a Seattle coal and railroad investor, John Leary. By 1901 the town’s name changed to Ravensdale, which residents changed in recognition of a large colony of ravens nesting in the vicinity. Photo provided by Bill Kombol

LAST WEEK: Has the economy
turned the corner, headed again
for prosperity?
Yes: 37% No: 63%
At the outset, let me make one thing perfectly clear: I certainly encourage all of you to Christmas shop in Enumclaw because, believe me, our local merchants need all the support they can get.
Yet, I’d also make a second thing perfectly clear: Enumclaw has become a bedroom, suburban com-munity whose residents work and travel every day to other regions within the vital sphere of Greater Seattle. And many, if not most, of these residents also shop in Seattle and the surrounding retail complex-es and malls because these retail centers are an intrinsic part of their daily lives.
Places like Southcenter.Through the years, I’ve often
complained about Christmas shop-ping in such an enclosed, insulated bubble. Of course, Southcenter’s Christmas decorations and displays are quite colorful and attractive, but I don’t like the fact that it’s climate-controlled; that is, you can wander leisurely from store to store and not be exposed to the wet and freez-ing weather of the season. Call me
Old School if you will, but for me an important part of Christmas is bundling up in heavy clothing, hug-ging your lover close to your side and darting through the chill and slush between Macy’s and Nordstrom, reminding you that it is, after all, a winter holiday. Of course, between stores you can also scurry into Oliver’s or some other warm, conve-nient lounge to ward off the shivers with a hot buttered rum. (You should never go Christmas shopping until you’re in the proper frame of mind.)
Perhaps that was the most intol-erable aspect of Christmases past at Southcenter; you couldn’t get a drink anywhere. However, I’m happy

“What is your relationship like with your father?” Or… “Tell me about your father.” This is a common opening line of question for many psychologists and counselors when meeting with a patient for the first time. Of all the places they could’ve started, why do they start here?
The answer is simple and profound. The way one views their father and how they feel their father views them are crucial elements of both psy-chological development and emotional well-being.
Most humans deeply desire the love and approval of a father. Ultimately this would include an authen-tic, reliable relationship that could withstand the chal-lenges of human error and imperfections. In the sim-plest of terms we want to be fully known and fully loved by our fathers and in return we want to fully know and
fully love them back. I believe the way some-
one views God is extremely important to his or her spiri-tual development and well-being. Is God harsh or laid back, conservative or liberal, serious or funny? How you think of God explains a lot about your approach to him or even your lack of approach. I believe the context in which we view God can explain the creation of denominational doctrine, determine the cul-ture within individual church-es and even begin to answer why some hold to the indefen-sible position of atheism. After all, it’s easy to reject someone if
we perceive they reject us. It all starts with the way we view God and the way we feel God views us.
Did you know that Jesus…being the express image of God the Father, was able to endure the shame and the pain of the cross simply because
he loves us? In fact, while each of us were in the grips of our sins and rebellion against him, he died for us. We could never sin enough to make him love us less or do enough good things to make him love us more. He loves us because that is who he is! He manifested his love for us by exchanging his life for ours on the cross.
A lot of junk in our lives could be wiped away sim-ply by being assured that our dad’s love for us is real, enduring and uncondition-al. I wish sometimes that each of my four sons could
see themselves through my eyes. I think they would find such rest knowing how awesome they are in my eyes and how completely I love them. Love has a way of presenting us blameless and complete in the eyes
of the beholder. None of my sons are perfect, but I don’t think I could be more proud of them. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that my biggest failure as a father has been in seeing the reflection of my love in the eyes of my sons. It isn’t that they don’t know I love them, just that their eyes are yet to reflect the depth of which I love them. That is how many of us are
with God. Our lives are a reflection of our ideas of God and how he loves us. Having God’s love revealed more and more to us is the patient work of the gospel.
As you celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas sea-son may the joy, hope and peace of God’s love rest with each of you. www.gracepointnw.org

Enumclaw had two final-ist in the classic, as both Levi Nortan at 106 pounds and Sean Wei at 170 took second place.
Team captains are seniors Wei and Wyley Stewart, who will compete at 195.
Eilers said the team is young and the, “Kids are working real hard. We are doing something right. We started out pretty good in the White River Classic.”

White River boysLast season’s White River High boys wrestling team man-
aged to crack the Top 10 at the Class 2A state wrestling tour-nament, with five Hornets qualifying for the big show at the Tacoma Dome.
The good news this time around is three of those state-qualifying grapplers are back for another season on the mat.
Coach Joe Klein’s top returnee is senior Trevor Kurtz, who took fourth in state a season ago at 132 pounds. He kicked of the 2013 season with a 6-3 decision, competing at 152, during White River’s battle against the tough Orting Cardinals.
Also back are Mason Hamilton and Cody Schwab, who qualified for state last year at 106 and 120, respectively, but weren’t among the top placers. At Orting, Hamilton had bumped up to 120 and Schwab earned a 5-2 decision at 145.
White River girlsWhite River coach Rich Valdez has high hopes for this
season’s girls wrestling team, largely based on turnout.
He had just nine wrestlers on last year’s team that placed sixth at the Class 2A state tournament and this year has seen the roster jump to 16 girls.
“We have more rookies than veterans, but a lot of under-classmen so the future looks bright,” Valdez wrote in an email.
He’s expecting big things from Hannah Lewandowski, the team captain who was heavyweight runnerup at last season’s state tourney. “We will be looking to match her up with the top competition all season and have her ready to take the title at state this year,” Valdez said.
Also, the coach is figuring his two returning seniors, captains Kylie Norton and McKinsie Shirey, can be state medalists. “Kylie is a cool-headed veteran with a lot of mat savvy and experience.” Valdez wrote, “and Shirey has shown leaps and bounds of improvement over the years and is really stepping up into a leadership role. I will expect her to put her money where her mouth is in the performance department and lead by example with a high placing this year.”
Additionally, the coach is excited about the continued improvement of Kendra Blue, who he sees potentially as another state placer. “She is highly competitive and coachable and I look for her to go far,” he wrote.
He notes that freshman Erin Redford also could turn some
heads this season.Rounding out the squad, Valdez said, are “a laundry list of
rookies and some returners that are aggressive, coachable and i can’t wait to see who is going to step up and surprise us.”
Part of the program’s success, he said, is due to volunteer coaches Jeff Meagher and Jason Jackson. “I couldn’t do any-thing without them, they don’t ever get enough credit.”

WR wrestlers seeking success
The girls on the team include, Emily Jerry, Patience Daniels, Alexis James, Leondra Keeline, Haily Starr, Marina Starr.
Jerry Scheidt said, “The Kings are in a coopera-tive agreement with the Enumclaw girls wrestling team, meaning that they will practice together for the year, but are their own team at tournaments and in the postseason scoring.
GymnasticsThe Enumclaw gymnas-
tic team is on the road to take its third consecutive state championship.
The Hornets competed at an invitational over the weekend and came in sec-ond by less than a point.
Coach Ben Skipworth said he was impressed with
the team’s performance at the invitation.
“We have a solid core. We will get stuff cleaned up and makes some big scores,” Skipworth said.
The Hornets bring back the core of the 2013 state champion team with Olivia Bannerot, the 2013 individ-ual state champion in bars, Emily Berte, Maddison Ward, Victoria Hernandez and Maria Blad.
Adding depth to the team are two freshman gymnasts, Elise Dunning and BriAnna Reisinger.
Skipworth has been coaching for 12 years, starting when he was 16 years old. He has lead the Hornets four years, bring-ing two state titles and now is looking for a third.

Helping hands
to report – just in case you haven’t been there for a few years – it’s different today.
Indeed, during the last decade Southcenter has gone through a major transforma-tion. Not only have occu-pants like Nordstrom and Sears extensively remodeled, but the entire promenade has been overhauled. There’s a comparatively new AMC theater complex, a revamped
food court and several new clients like Chico’s and H&M. And chief among the relatively new businesses are four large, modern and innovative restaurants. Not only are their menus rather refreshing and novel, but they offer fully-stocked bars and, though the settings may be a bit too bright and harsh, I hesitate to criticize such a “revolutionary” change. The old Rain Forest restaurant – a place that will surely delight your children – now
boasts a “safari” lounge that may not offer the secluded intimacy you’re looking for but at least the lighting is kind of dim.
Even Nordstrom has welcomed the conversion. It’s third floor now boasts a pleasant little cafe that has wine and beer. In fact, though you may find the tables are a bit cramped, I think it’s the most comfort-able place in the mall.
Happy holiday shopping, everyone!

December marks the second month of QFC’s annual charitable giving
program, Bringing Hope to the Table, to raise cash and food donations for hungry people in the Northwest. This program began at QFC in 2002 and benefits two outstanding non-profit organizations that are working to end hunger in the northwest, Food Lifeline in the Seattle area and the Oregon Food Bank in the Portland area. Between them, these organizations distribute food to hundreds of food banks, meal programs and shelters every week.
In the course of a year Food Lifeline will distribute over 36 million pounds of food, or more than 30 million meals, to over 744,000 people.
“Due to the continued recession and long-term unemployment, the number of hungry people in our communities continues to grow, but QFC customers are making a difference!” notes Amy Shipman, Grocery Rescue Program Manager at Food Lifeline. “During the winter months, many families make the tough decision to pay the heat bill or buy food for the table. Bringing Hope to the Table makes sure that families
have enough to eat beyond the holidays and whenever there is need.”
According to Food Lifeline, “the very low income people that food banks and meal programs have traditionally served still have tremendous need and represent 53% of the people who seek food assistance in Western Washington.” Of the clients that Food Lifeline serves, 35% are children and 14% are seniors. Oregon Food Bank reports similar numbers. Children age 17 or younger make up 34% of the recipients in the households served by OFB and adults 55 and above account for 18% of their clientele.
The donations that QFC collects during this two month period will help feed hungry people for several months to come. Food donations typically drop in quantity after the holidays, so the surplus donations collected now will help fill the gap until donations pick up in mid to late spring. Your cash donations are also vital to keeping the food collection and distribution operations going. They help pay operating expenses to keep the freezers running and the trucks on the road.
There are many ways in which QFC customers can help support Bringing Hope to the Table. You can buy a pre-made bag of groceries for $10 that contains dry-good grocery items. You can also purchase food bank recommended items and donate those in our donation bins. There will be items throughout the store marked with special tags to make it easy to know what
to purchase and donate. QFC will also have $1 and $5 donation cards available at the checkstand as well as $10 virtual bag donation cards. You can also donate your spare change into coin collection boxes available at your checkstand. Thank you for supporting QFC, Food Lifeline and Oregon Food Bank to help feed the hungry during the holiday season and beyond.

is a grace to learning to appreciate the subtle charms of the winter landscape. Notice how a white-barked birch contrasts against the gray winter sky or the allure of bright red berries for the local bird population.
Christmas greens from your own backyard
Adding evergreens like cedar, arborvitae, blue spruce and golden cypress to the land-
scape offers more than just evergreen color and texture. Now is the time to prune and trim your evergreens and use the clippings to fill empty window boxes and container gardens for the holidays. Add a few bare branches of coral bark maple, red twig dogwood or the twisted branches of con-torted filbert to your collection of evergreen boughs and you have a Christmas display that can be enjoyed all winter long.
Tips for using cut evergreens
Cut the evergreens at a joint or where the branch joins to the trunk.
Cut evergreens can be stored for weeks inside a plastic bag if left outdoors in a cold but shaded location.
The cut end of any evergreen or bare branch can be poked into the moist soil of an empty container garden and they will look fresh for up to eight weeks if left out-
doors. For indoor use you can count on your cut holly, pine or cedar lasting just 24 hours unless the stems are in water.
Avoid using hemlock, especially indoors, as the needles fall quickly from the cut branches.

amount of work to end what was started. President Obama campaigned on a promise to get rid of the prison at Guantanamo Bay, but five years later, the naval base on Cuba’s eastern shore still houses terrorists captured since the American invasion of Afghanistan in 2002. And there’s noth-ing the president can do to change things.
Remember when we didn’t have to go through security checks before we got on a plane? It was before the Black
September hijackings of three jets in September 1970. These jets were destroyed on the ground in Jordan, blown up after the passengers were offloaded. D.B. Cooper hijacking a Portland plane bound for
Seattle on Sept. 24, 1971, added to airport security, which was followed by the Sept. 11 hijackings.
The War on Terrorism will continue to exist and no president can actually dis-mantle it, even if the need is no longer there. As a result, Americans can expect to have their actions monitored secretly, like it or not.
We can’t turn back the clock on airline security, the Department of Education, Social Security, Medicare and, recently, ObamaCare. No president, whether Democrat or Republican, can bring about change eas-ily. That’s the nature of prec-edent.
We voters need to remember this when we listen to the promises of future politicians. Promises are cheap and easy, reform is costly and difficult. Not only do presidents have this problem, we all do. All of us have to live with our previ-ous decisions.
