LITHONIA—Sixty curious “ramblers” visited Darold Honore’s house in November, examining the original molding, hardwood floors, and 10 fireplaces found throughout the two-story Victorian beauty he and his family call home.

Honore,’ a former mayor of Lithonia who now serves as a City Council member, lives in one of Lithonia’s oldest homes. The 19th century house on Church Street served as DeKalb County’s first public library, started by Lula Almand, who allowed residents to drop by and borrow reading materials from the bookcase in her parlor.

The Honore’ home was one of several stops explored by 60 history buffs—ramblers—who signed up for the Arabia Mountain Expedition, which was co-hosted Nov. 17 by the Georgia Trust and the Arabia Mountain Heritage Alliance. Members of the group plopped down $35 to $40 to tour historic sites in DeKalb and Rockdale and learn how people like Honore’ and the Monks at the historic Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Rockdale live with history every day.

“I actually call this place Noah’s ark because it’s such a large edifice made of cypress. It has fireplaces everywhere—even in the bathrooms—because that was the source of heat,” said Honore’, who bought the 3,000-square-foot, five-bedroom house in 2000 for $170,000.

And much like Noah’s ark, Honore’s house has been a refuge.

Honore’s parents moved into the house with him, his wife, Tammy, and their son, Darold, Jr. after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005. ABC’s Good Morning America filmed a segment at the house on Thanksgiving Day that year to see how the family was coping and to get a sense for what the holiday meant to them having survived the storm.

When the history lovers toured his home, Honore’ not only showed off the architecture, but some of his personal memorabilia, including a picture of him standing with President Barack Obama, who was on the campaign trail

in Atlanta in 2007. The people on the tour also learned

about the rich history of Lithonia. “That’s one of the things this

tour is all about. We’re ramblers. We love making that historic connection, bridging the gap between generations of families and people who live in and/or just care about this area,” said Arabia Mountain Heritage Alliance Executive Director Mera Cardenas. “There is so much great history here—from Lithonia’s Greek name to the fact that Lithonia served as the heart of the

CONYERS—Rockdale County will turn a new page in history when it installs its newly-elected officials on Sunday, Dec. 30, 7 p.m., at the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main St., Conyers.

Eight African American Democrats who campaigned as the “Slate of 8” will be sworn into office, along with two other officials—Superior Court Judge Robert Mumford and incumbent State Court Judge Nancy Bills, who both won their seats during the General Primary in July.

The “Slate of 8” includes Rockdale CEO Richard Oden, Commissioner Oz Nesbitt and Clerk of Courts Ruth Wilson, all re-elected to second four-year terms; Sheriff Eric Levett; Probate Judge Charles Mays; Magistrate Judge Phinia Aten; Tax Commissioner Rakeim “RJ” Hadley; Coroner George Levett, Jr., all elected to first terms. The eight are the first African Americans elected to their respective positions in the history of the 141-year-old county. The Nov. 6 election also marked the first time in more than 20 years that Democrats dominated Rockdale.

Details of the inauguration are still being worked out, including who will administer the oaths of office. The inauguration will be kept simple because it is being held on a Sunday evening, oganizers said A reception will be held after the swearing-in ceremony. The event is open to the public.

CONYERS—Rockdale Sheriff-Elect Eric Levett says he will hold a town hall meeting in early January to discuss his plan of action for his first 60 days in office.

“I’m going to keep my word and let the public know our priorities, where our administration is headed,” said Levett, who said the exact date and location of the meeting will be announced later.

Levett is organizing a five-member transition team, comprised of experienced law enforcement officials

from throughout the metro Atlanta area, to help him get organized. Two females and three males have been asked to serve on the team. Once all of the candidates are confirmed, the team will be introduced sometime this month, Levett said. The transition team will review the organizational structure of the Sheriff’s Office and formulate recommendations for changes where needed, Levett said. Other responsibilities are being discussed, he said.

Levett said he has not met with his opponent since winning the election. Levett was certified the winner in a tense showdown that required two recounts after the elections were held because the numbers were so close. In the end, Levett edged out Sheriff Jeff Wigington with 32 votes.

Wigington congratulated Levett in a letter and through an e-mail. Wigington was one of several dignitaries who showed support to Levett’s family a few weeks ago by attending the funeral of matriarch Barbara J. Levett, who was Eric Levett’s grandmother.

Wigington could not be reached for comment, despite calls and messages left with his office. Sources said he plans to retire from the Sheriff’s Office, where he has worked for 30 years. No one has released plans for a celebration honoring his service.

Meanwhile, Levett also has named the person who will serve as second in command in his administration: He

announced on Nov. 21 that he selected Major Scott Freeman, a 22-year veteran with the Conyers Police Department, to serve as his chief deputy.

Levett said he has known Freeman since they attended middle school together. Both are 40 years old and participated in the Conyers Police Explorer’s program as high school students.

Levett said Freeman possesses outstanding leadership skills and has an impeccable reputation of being fair, ethical and tough on crime, which Levett said will be a priority under his administration.

“He’s very knowledgeable, a very valuable asset to Conyers Police Department, and I believe he will be a valuable asset to the Sheriff’s Office as well,” said Levett. “He has brought in millions of dollars to the city of Conyers’ Police Department through grants.” Freeman received his bachelor of science degree in organization leadership from Mercer University and his master’s degree in public administration from Walden University, where he also received his Ph.D. in public policy and administration. Freeman is a graduate of the FBI national academy, open only to candidates through a nomination process. Less than 1 half of 1 percent of executive law enforcement officers in the U.S. are able to attend the academy.

Gwinnett County’s teen service group, H.O.O.K.E.D. (Helping Others Organize Kreative Everyday Differences), will host a meeting to discuss holiday volunteer opportunities on Dec. 14, 10 a.m. – noon, at the Shorty Howell Activity Building, 2750 Pleasant Hill Road, Duluth.

H.O.O.K.E.D. teens are trained as leaders in their community and assist with a variety of exciting activities and events throughout the county. Rockdale’s Monastery of the Holy Spirit, 2625 Georgia 212 Conyers, will host a Christmas concert featuring the Atlanta Boy Choir on Dec. 15, 7 – 9 p.m.

The Atlanta Boy Choir is under the direction of Maestro Fletcher Wolfe. The concert will also host Dr. Lawrence Weaver, a graduate of Morehouse University and the University of Michigan, as assistant director and accompanist.

The 50 boys and the alumni choir of 40 men of The Atlanta Boy Choir will be joined by a small chamber orchestra comprised of piano, flute, oboe, violin, cello and harp.

DeKalb History Center presents Rich’s author Jeff Clemmons

The DeKalb History Center, 101 East Court Square, Decatur, will host Jeff

Clemmons, author of “Rich’s: A Southern Institution.” Clemmons will be the guest speaker on Dec. 4, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Clemmons will trace Rich’s 137-year history including the true stories behind “Penelope Penn, Fashionata,” “The Great Tree,” the “Pink Pig,” Rich’s famous coconut cake and how events at the former downtown Atlanta store helped John F. Kennedy become America’s 35th president. In 1867, less than three years after the Civil War left the city in ruins, Hungarian Jewish immigrant Morris Rich opened a small dry goods store on what is now Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. Over time, his brothers, Emanuel and Daniel, joined the business. Wthin a century, it became a retailing dynasty.

DeKalb Commissioner Barnes sets Crime Watch meeting

DeKalb District 4 Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton is inviting three

South DeKalb communities—Dogwood Farms, Navarre and the Pennybrook subdivisions—to a crime watch awareness meeting she is hosting on Dec. 3. The meeting will be held at the Wade Walker Park Family YMCA, 7 p.m., 5605 Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain.

Sutton will be joined by other county and law enforcement officials.

Senior Spectrum welcomes HighLeit choral group

DeKalb Medical’s Senior Spectrum program will welcome the traveling “Highleit” chorus on Dec. 7, 10 – 11 a.m. in the hospital’s theatre, 2701 North Decatur Road, Decatur.

The holiday season is coming upon us and in place of the hospital’s usual physician talk, DeKalb Medical will host the Senior Spectrum Holiday Jubilee, a day of entertainment, beginning with a complimentary breakfast buffet.

Highleit is the touring-show choir with Avondale High School. Comprised of 22 9-12th graders, the audition-only group tours all over the Southeast and is the recipient of musical honors and awards.

Led by Jeffrey Funderburk, the Highleit Choir will perform some of the holiday classics, as well as a 60’s tribute to the songs and dances of the Doo-Wop era.

DeKalb NAACP sets swearing-in ceremony

The DeKalb NAACP will have a swearing-in ceremony for officers who have been elected to serve the next term. The swearing-in will be held on Dec. 15, 10 a.m., Piedmont Technical Center’s Conference Building, 495 N. Indian Cree Drive, Clarkston.

The organization is preparing to celebrate Jubilee Day, recognizing the signing of the Emancipation proclamation, on Jan. 1, 11 a.m., at Rainbow Park Baptist Church, 2941 Columbia Drive, Decatur.

Congressman Johnson to host ‘HomeSafe’ foreclosure event

Congressman Hank Johnson will host an event to help struggling homeowners avoid foreclosure. The event will be held Saturday, Dec. 8,10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Salem Bible Church, 5460 Hillandale Drive, Lithonia.

Johnson is hosting the free event with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ HomeSafe Georgia program and the D&E Group, which are certified housing counselors.

The event marks the second one Johnson has held this year to address the foreclosure crisis. Johnson held a similar event on April 28 in which hundreds of homeowners were helped.

HomeSafe is designed to provide temporary assistance to Georgia homeowners who have suffered a substantial income loss due to involuntary unemployment or underemployment and who are able and willing to work.

The event will also provide opportunities for homeowners to meet with counselors to see if they are eligible for a loan modification. To pre-qualify and to register, participants can call D&E at 770-961-6900 or visit their Web site at depower.org.

Robert McArthur said he brought his wife, Nancy, and son, John Mitchell, on the tour to get in touch with their family’s history. McArthur’s grandfather, John, was an immigrant from Scotland who

moved to Lithonia in 1880 to mine in the granite quarry.

“It’s important for Mitch to see this and for him to get a better understanding of his roots and the great history he comes from,” said McArthur, a realtor in Fayetteville. “They may move to Atlanta or across the country, but I never want my family to forget their history or Lithonia.”

Other stops on the

expedition included the Lithonia Woman’s Club; Arabia Mountain Nature Center; Lithonia’s Flat Rock Archives, which highlights a DeKalb community started by free slaves in 1865; the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, founded in Conyers in 1944; and the Smyrna Campground and Presbyterian Church, founded in 1827 in Conyers.

Police later arrested and charged Jackson with murder as an adult, but it is unclear if she will be tried as an adult. The DeKalb District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and has not reached a decision, said Erik Burton, a spokesman for the D.A.

Meanwhile, the case has become a hot topic everywhere. Many radio listeners of the Al Sharpton Show weighed in on the matter recently, urging DeKalb officials to try Jackson

as a minor—not an adult. Many said as a 13-year-old, Jackson may have cracked under the pressures of babysitting so many small children at the same time. Support for Jackson, the toddler and the family as a whole has come on the internet as well.

“This has made me cry so hard. I can’t even imagine the pain your family is going through. I’m so sorry for your loss,” wrote Melisa Barnes of Gadsden, Alabama.

“I still can’t get over your

loss, my God, my God what a terrible thing your family must endure. My heart and prayers go out to your family, for both daughters. May God be with you,” said Tawanda Adams, of North Carolina.

The day of the murder, Jackson had gotten into trouble earlier in the day because a neighbor saw a boy go to her home while her parents, Shelton and Haneefa Ray, were away. The neighbor went to the home and found the boy hiding in the

closet and told him he had to leave, according to Shelton Ray. Shelton Ray said Jackson feared Sasha was going to tell the boy was in their home.

The Rays came home around noon, after receiving a call from Jackson that her youngest sibling was missing. They searched for Sasha and eventually found her bloodied body in the back yard. Shelton Ray said she died in his arms on the way to the hospital.

A makeshift memorial of stuffed animals, balloons and

flowers was erected in front of the family’s home on Waldrop Trail.

“My heart goes out to the Ray family. This family, this community, is going to need a lot of prayer this holiday season,” said LaTonya Marsh, who lives in a subdivision near the family. “Sasha has earned her wings sooner than we did. We mourn her loss, but you have to remember that Sasha is resting peacefully with our Heavenly Father now.”

Rockdale Attorney Gary Washington has

another reason to be proud of his celebrity cousin, Kerry Washington.

Kerry, who endorsed Gary Washington in his bid this summer for Rockdale Superior Court Judge, is featured in the December issue of Elle magazine. Johnson as the “Business Champion of the Year.” Johnson, a successful entrepreneur with brands in a number of urban communities, is among eight business leaders lauded under this year’s theme, “Celebrating Champions of Job Creation.”

Johnson joined a distinguished roster of honorees at the 51st Annual Equal Opportunity Day Dinner and Gala, which was held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel Ballroom.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Business Champion of the Year Award from the Urban League of Greater Atlanta, an organization that I have always respected and admired for the work it does to empower communities and support families to achieve economic empowerment,” said Johnson. Atlanta Hawks’ Head Coach Larry Drew visited Voices of Faith Ministries in Stone Mountain recently, taking in a spiritual Word from Bishop Gary Hawkins, Sr. Drew worshipped with Voices of Faith on Nov. 25, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It was his second visit to the church.

“I was really glad that he came to visit us. I just looked out and there he was in the congregation. We didn’t know he was coming, but he has always said that whenever his schedule permits, he would worship with us,” said Bishop Hawkins, an avid basketball lover and big fan of the Hawks.

Bishop Hawkins praised Drew for the work that he is doing with the Hawks, who are on a winning streak, and encouraged him to pursue his goals.

CDC: Young people infected with HIV unaware

ATLANTA—Young people ages 13 to 24 represent more than a quarter of new HIV infections each year, according to new statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control. Officials say 60 percent of those young people don’t know they are infected. “It is a sobering reality that so many young people are infected with HIV and even more startling, the number of these young people who aren’t even aware of it,” said Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health. “This tragedy can be prevented by getting people tested and linked to treatment.” The CDC’s new statistics were released as the state prepared t observe World AIDS Day in Georgia.

Gov. Nathan Deal proclaimed Dec. 1 as World AIDS Day in Georgia. The state joined countries around the world in the fight against HIV/AIDS, offering support for people living with HIV and remembering those who have died of AIDS. In observance of World AIDS Day, the Georgia Department of Public Health hosted its first HIV/AIDS Twitter chat. Discussion topics include startling new HIV/AIDS numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the AIDS epidemic in Georgia, and what is being done statewide to fight the spread of HIV.

As part of Georgia’s treatment as prevention effort to reduce the spread of HIV infection, the CDC recently awarded the Georgia Department of Public Health $2.5 million to help get HIV-positive Georgians into treatment. Linking these patients with treatment is essential to reducing HIV transmission in Georgia. Research indicates an HIV-positive person is 96 percent less-likely to pass the virus to others if they’re adhering to an appropriate treatment regimen.
