Nevada Youth Legislators Congratulations to Rose Asaf ’15 and Nick Nielson ’15 for serving on the nevada State Youth Legislature for the 2014-2015 term. rose was recently named Chairperson.

Youth Legislators review and evaluate issues that affect nevada’s youth. Distinctive to the nevada Youth Legislature, as a group, they have the statutory authority to propose one legislative measure during each legislative session. This gives Youth Legislators the ability and opportunity to author policy that can be passed by the nevada Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

Congratulations!

Freshman Pride

It is hard to imagine that the first semester is coming to a close. It has b e e n f o u r months since the freshman transition began, and most students have gotten used to the “Gorman” way of doing things. There is a lot to take in when one considers the different schedules, the different dress codes, the difference between Mandatory Study Hall (MSH) and Mandatory Homework Session (MHS), and most importantly the difference between a tardy, an absence, and an A15! Judging by the number of nominations received for Freshman of The Week, it appears as if most of the students have adjusted.

Recent winners of the Freshman of the Week award include Trevor Papock, isabel Franco, Grant rogers, emily Burnar, Joseph Williams, Jillian Briare, Sydney lobato, and Francisco Franco. They and their parents should be very proud of this early recognition in their high school career, especially noting the large number of freshmen! Congratulations to all.

With exams behind them, I am wishing everyone a joyful Christmas break. To you and your family I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

PSATResults will be distributed in December to the juniors and sophomores through their English classes. The counselors will explain to the students how to interpret their results at that time. Students receive their original test booklets with their scores. Parents and students should use it as a valuable learning tool and take the time to go over the problems and the answers. We encourage juniors to take the SAT and the ACT in the spring.

TuTORiNgAfter school every Tuesday and Thursday National Honor Society students – juniors and

seniors with a 3.50 grade point average and above – are available to tutor students in need of a little extra help. Most subject areas are covered. There is no charge for this service. Students may acquire the assistance of an NHS tutor by just going to the Tiberti Student Commons on those days.

Final Exams Are Right Around The Corner (December 17, 18, 19) Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind:1. is my Study Place available to me whenever i need it?

Your Study Place does little good if you cannot use it when you need it. If you are using a Study Place that you must share with others for any reason, work out a schedule so that you know when you can use it.

2. is my Study Place free from interruptions?

It is important to have uninterrupted study time. You may have to hang a Do noT DIsTUrB sign on the door or turn off the phone.

3. is my Study Place free from distractions?

Research shows that most students study best in a quiet environment. If you find that playing a stereo or TV improves your mood, keep the volume low.

4. Does my Study Place contain all the study materials i need?

Be sure your Study Place includes reference sources and supplies such as pens and pencils, paper, ruler, calculator, and whatever else you might need.

5. Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table?

While working on an assignment or studying for a test, use a desk or table that is large enough to hold everything you need. Allow enough room for writing and avoid clutter.

6. Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair?

A chair that is not comfortable can cause discomfort or pain that will interfere with your studying. A chair that is too comfortable might make you sleepy. Select a chair in which you can sit for long periods while maintaining your attention.

7. Does my Study Place have enough light?

The amount of light you need depends on what you are doing. The important thing is that you can clearly see what you need to see without any strain or discomfort.

8. Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature?

If your Study Place is too warm, you might become sleepy. If it is too cold, your thinking may slow down and become unclear. Select a temperature at which your mind and body function best.

Having a good study Place is important for effective studying.

ART AND SCIENCEIn mid-October, 35 Advanced Art, Ceramics and Earth Science students traveled to Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah for three days in a co-curricular opportunity to study geologic processes of the area and use the beautiful natural landscape as inspiration for works of art.

Led by teachers Mrs. Feely, Ms. Dawson and Mr. Devlin the classes practiced Leave No Trace principles, hiked a variety of trails, learned about Native American Astronomy and even went stargazing. The goal of the trip was for students to better understand

the natural processes such as frost-wedging and chemical weathering that carved the beautiful vistas and hoodoos that became the subject of many pieces of art such as watercolors, drawings and sculptures made from natural materials. All in all, the students gained a greater appreciation and understanding for the processes that created the beautiful panoramic views and used them as inspiration for amazing works of art.
