By Ginny BalistreriAnother grand evening is being

planned for the 2013 Il GrandeCarnevale, the Italian CommunityCenter’s pre-Lenten costume andmask ball. The theme for the eventon Saturday, Feb. 9, is “Recordi diCarnevale” (“Memories of Carne-vale”), and it’s shaping up tobecome one of the most memorableevents of the New Year. Considerthis your official invitation toattend.

Built upon the traditions ofVenice, Italy’s historic celebration, the ICC’s Carnevale is traditionallyone of the highlights of the Center’sevent calendar. Co-Chairs Rose-mary DeRubertis and Joanne(Sanfilippo) Czubek and their com-mittee are promising to top pastevents with terrific, fun-filled activ-ities highlighted by great food, theoutstanding music of the BillSargent Big Band, magnificent cos-tumes and masks, chances to wincash and other prizes, a galaparade, the coronation of the royalcourt, luscious sweets and aBartolotta fireworks display tolight the sky and your imagination.

The deadline for reservations isMonday, Feb. 4. Prepaid reserva-tions are $55 per person, with adiscounted price of $50 for ICCmembers. Reservations may bemade with a credit card by callingthe Italian Community Center at414-223-2180, or by sending in thereservation form accompanyingthis article. Don’t wait until thelast minute to make your plans.Carnevale always enjoys a capacityattendance.

An evening to rememberFor those who haven’t previous-

ly attended, Carnevale gets underway at 5:11 p.m. in the galleriawith a social hour (cash bar) whereyou will enjoy an array of tasty hot

and cold hors d’oeuvres. An hourlater, at 6:11 p.m., guests will becalled into the Pompeii GrandBallroom for a sumptuous dinnerand dessert.

A colorful coronation ceremonyof the ICC’s 2013 royalty followsdinner. Then there’s judging forthe best costumes and masks alongwith many chances to win prizes, dancing to the popular Bill SargentBig Band and other entertainment. But that’s not all; there’s a moneyraffle and an exciting late-nightpyrotechnics display presented byBartolotta Fireworks. The memo-rable evening concludes with a tripto the spectacular sweet table. Acash bar will be open all evening.

Carnevale’s dinner menu is bestdescribed as a gastronomic extrava-ganza. Starting with Italian saladand bread and butter, it includes adouble entrée – a petite filetmignon and chicken Sarà – servedwith a nest of light garlic-butterangel hair pasta, broiled tomatoparmesan, and a vegetable medleyfollowed by a decadent dessert ofNew York cheesecake with straw-berry filling and chocolate ganache, coffee, tea, iced tea or milk. Eachtable will be set with a bottle of redand white wine.

The creative design team of ICCvolunteers Marie and Craig Lieber,C.J. Lieber, Ryan Lieber, ChristinaZiino, Ann Zambito, Santa Mazza,Frank D’Amato, Cosmo Carini andPamela Mazza-Mueller are alreadybusy creating the ballroom decora-tions to carry out Carnevale’stheme. All they will say is that the

ballroom will sparkle. However, theteam does ask that anyone who hasphotographs of past Carnevale con-tact the ICC. The design teamwould like to borrow the photos anduse them in displays at the ball. The photos will be returned to youafter the event. The most desirablepictures are those that reflect yourmemories of Carnevale.

Other members of the commit-tee, including Rose Anne CerasoFritchie, Liz Ceraso, Mary Winard,Marie Schwindt, Jim Schwindt,Mary Pecoraro, Anna Pitzo, andGinny Balistreri are busy at workon registration, the raffle, programbook design, publicity and ad sales.

Those who would like to place abusiness ad or a congratulatorymessage to members of the RoyalCourt in the program book shouldcontact Anna Pitzo at 262-695-6119; or at [email protected] will provide specs and pricesand help in placing your ad.

Costumes and masksCostumes and masks aren’t

required to have an enjoyableevening, but many choose to get inthe spirit of Carnevale with imagi-native outfits. It’s not unusual tosee court jesters, Las Vegas showgirls, ladies and gentlemen of therenaissance, lions and tigers, cler-gy, the phantom of the opera, andan Elvis or two among the guests.Masks, which are separatelyjudged, are equally imaginativedecorated in sequins, beads, plumes, and whatever else strikesthe creator’s fancy.

“We encourage our guests tocome in costume or masks and cre-ate a few memories of their own,”said the co-chairs, DeRubertis andCzubek. “We’ll have judges to selectthe best entries, and we will beawarding prizes for the best andmost creative efforts.”

The judging will take placeduring the grand march before thefireworks show and the serving ofthe sweet table.

In her role as La GranMarescislla, Marie Lieber will openthe evening’s festivities and be incharge of keeping the activities onschedule.

Czubek and DeRubertis added:“This year we’re asking past royal-ty who plan to attend Carnevale onFeb. 9 to let us know they will be

Royal Court announced for Feb. 9Il Grande Carnevale

By Ginny BalistreriThe Royal Court has been select-

ed for the 34th annual Il GrandeCarnevale, the Italian CommunityCenter’s social event of the year.Their selection will be formallyacknowledged at a coronation cere-mony during the pre-Lenten cele-bration, which is open to the publicand will take place at the ICC onFeb. 9, the Saturday before AshWednesday in 2013.

The theme of the 2013 gala is“Ricordi di Carnevale” (“Memoriesof Carnevale”). Details of the eventcan be found in an article in thisissue of The Times.

Carnevale co-chairs RosemaryDeRubertis and Joanne (Sanfilippo)Czubek are once again chairing thegala for which attendees areencouraged to wear costumes ormasks or both. “You can wear anycostume you choose; you’re limitedonly by the extent of your imagina-tion,” they said. As in the past, judges will award prizes for thebest costumes and masks.“Competition for prizes is alwaysintense,” they added. “Year afteryear, people keep outdoing them-selves.”

Czubek and DeRubertisannounced that their committeehas selected the following ICCmembers for 34th Royal Court:

• Re e Regina (King andQueen) – John Alioto and MaryAnn Ceraso Alioto.

John and Mary Ann have beenmembers of the Italian CommunityCenter “…since the beginning.”Their parents, Sam and BeatriceCeraso and John and CarolineAlioto, set the example by beinglong time active members of theCenter and dedicated volunteers. It was only natural that their com-mitment would be passed down totheir children. Besides Festa andCarnevale, the 2013 King andQueen have served as volunteersfor events like the Children’sEaster and Befana post-Christmasparties and help coordinate golfcarts at Festa.

The only time they weren’tinvolved was when they were car-ing for Mary Anne’s late father dur-ing his illness.

The ICC and Festa are part ofthe reason the couple is togethertoday. John and Mary Anne datedin high school and college, but wenttheir separate ways and later mar-ried others. John, who works forC&D Technologies as a lead man inproduction, and Mary Anne whodevelops telecommunications solu-tions for business customers ofTime Warner Cable, met again in1998 after they were both divorced. They began working together asICC/Festa volunteers from thattime on. They married two yearslater in 2000. Their blended familyincludes John’s daughters, Jenna,Kayla and Anna Alioto, and thecouple’s son, Sam.

This is the first time the couplehas been named to the CarnevaleRoyal Court. However, Sam wasPiccolo Principe in 2010 and John’sdaughter Jenna is a formerPrincipessa.

“We’re honored to have beenasked,” said Mary Anne. “We’reexcited to share this experiencewith our family and everyone whoattends Carnevale. It’s going to bea wonderful evening.”

They expect a big turnout frommembers of both the Ceraso andAlioto families. Their excitement is

multiplied by the fact that MaryAnne has had a very long recupera-tion from groundbreaking anklesurgery following an extreme sportaccident. She expects that byFebruary she will be able to walk inthe Grand March and hopefully toshare a dance with her husband.

• Nonno e Nonna (Grandfather and Grandmother) – Rayand Caroline Besasie

Ray and Caroline (Purpero)Besasie were founding members ofthe ICC and Festa. Their dedica-tion to the Center is steeped in vol-unteerism and family commitment.Even though the couple raised fivechildren and Ray was also busywith a very successful career asvice president of The ExcaliburCorporation and later as the ownerof Baci Auto Co., Inc., many of their57 years together are linked to ICCevents and activities.

Ask either Ray or Caroline torecount a memory of the early daysof the organization, and they havetrouble recalling just one. However,Caroline can look back on the firstFesta and her role as the one andonly cashier for that event 35 yearsago with a hearty laugh.

Her assignment was to sellFesta tickets from a wooden boothat the Main Gate that was as dirtyas it was old. She had to clean itfrom top to bottom before she couldopen for business. But that wasnothing compared to the unexpect-ed onslaught of business thatoccurred from the time they openeduntil they closed three days later. The organizers underestimatedFesta’s initial attraction, andCaroline had to manage rapid saleswithout the benefit of even a cashbox. Someone finally found a shoe-box and that’s how she managedthe cash flow.

Caroline later served as Captainof the Main Gate, while Ray man-aged the Festa bank.

The couple, who met at LincolnHigh School and married in 1955,is well suited to their role as theRoyal Grandparents. They havefive children – Ray, Jr., Grace AnnNiles, Roslyn Radke, MarilynBesasie and Carlo Besasie – andthey are the grandparents of 11 – 6boys and 5 girls.

By Thomas HemmanTimes Editor

Beginning with the next issue(January 2013 edition), The ItalianTimes will be introducing a newmethod of delivery of the newspa-per to its readers.

The Italian Times will continueto be published 11 times annually, including the combined July/Au-gust Festa Italiana issue. Everyissue will be published as anonline edition of the ItalianCommunity Center’s website –www.ICCMilwaukee.com. However, just six of the 11 editions will beprinted and made available formailing to ICC members and forfree public distribution throughour 70 outlets in the GreaterMilwaukee Area.

This action, which wasapproved by the ItalianCommunity Center Board, is beingtaken to save on printing, mailingand delivery costs. Our plan is toproduce print editions carryingdatelines of February, April, June,July/August, October andDecember in 2013.

With the introduction of thisnew plan, we have a special offerto our advertisers. Our plan is tocharge for advertising in the printeditions only. Initially, there willbe no charge for advertising in theonline edition. However, advertis-ers must purchase advertising inthe print edition to receive freeonline edition advertisements.Once we are able to evaluateonline readership, we will be able

to set our online advertising ratesaccordingly. These rates, weexpect, will vary from the printedition advertising rates. However,if they desire, advertisers will beable to purchase combined printand online advertising rates atvery attractive rates.

We will also be offering advert-ing opportunities on the three web-sites under the stewardship of theICC. In addition to the previouslymentioned ICCMilwaukee.com, thetwo other websites arewww.FestaItaliana.com andwww.ItalianConference.com.

Details on this advertising pro-gram need to be ironed out andwill be made available once thework is completed.

Our goal is to retain all of our

regular advertisers and, throughthe worldwide exposure of theonline edition, attract many morenew readers, as well as advertis-ers.

The ICC Board considers TheItalian Times a vital tool for theorganization, its future growth andprosperity and an importantrecord of the contributions of per-sons of Italian descent to our socie-ty.

Persons who may have ques-tions about the new method ofdelivering The Italian Times maycontact me, Tom Hemman, at414/223-2180 or via email at [email protected].
