    SIDES OF DEBATE

    KEY POINTS

Each side will have 2-3 people assigned to one of the 5(or 4) main arguing points:1. fossil succession2. anatomical homology3. molecular homology4. embryology5. biogeography **Each person needs to be familiar with the information for all the other key points.SPEECHES

First proposition constructive 5 minutesThis speaker makes a case for the motion for debate, providing a proof of the topic with three or fourmajor points.(These major points would be referring to fossil succession, anatomical homology etc.)

    First opposition constructive 5 minutes

This speaker makes several arguments against the proposition teams case and refutes thepropositions major points.(These major points would be referring to fossil succession, anatomical homology etc. that theproposition team brought up.)

Second proposition constructive 5 minutesThis speaker should rebuild and extend upon the propositions case. This means that this speaker mustextend and amplify the original proposition points and refute the oppositions major argumentsagainst the case.(You are going into more detail on the main arguing points, fossils, anatomical homology, molecular

    homology etc)

Second opposition constructive 5 minutesThis speaker amplifies the opposition arguments against the case, providing new information aboutwhy the opposition team should win the debate. This speaker should answer the propositions answersto the opposition teams original arguments.

Opposition rebuttal 3 minutesThis speaker must put the debate together and explain why, given all of the arguments in the debate, the opposition team should still win the debate (you summarize). Should finalize refutation of thepropositions major points.

Proposition rebuttal 3 minutesThis speaker should summarize the issues in the debate and explain why, even with the oppositionsarguments, the proposition teams should win the debate. Should refute the oppositions major points.

    Argument and supporting facts

Each pair is responsible for writing 2 arguments that supporttheir topic (fossils, anatomical homology etc).

These will be used in the debate.

The 3 essential parts of an argument (ARE):

    A - AssertionA statement:

    Homework should be banned...

R - ReasoningThe because of the argument:

...because it interferes with effective learning.

E - EvidenceThe proof of your reasoning:

...For example, students have to stay up late to finish theirhomework, and this makes them tired in class so they cant pay

    attention.

Each fact needs to have a source listed.

The facts need to be clearly stated.

Refuting PointsEach pair is responsible for writing 2 points their opponent willpossibly bring up. There are also to write a counter-argument

    against each of those points.

Note Taking during DebateEach student must take notes during the debate.

Each of the 5 columns in the Notes Sheet need to be completedduring the debate. There should to be a logical flow to the

    notes.

    Outcome of Debate

Winning Team will receive points for their well executeddebate.

    RESEARCH NOTES -GOOGLE DOC

Your team needs to set up a Google document. (Make sure you share Ms MacDonald on it.)It will have a section for each of the 5(or4) key points (fossil succession, anatomicalhomology etc). Each pair will write their 2 arguments and 2 counter-arguments on the shared google doc.

    For example:

Argument 1: Fossil Succession - Evolution

    A.R.E. #1Source:A.R.E. #2Source:

Counter Argument 1: Fossil Succession - Evolution
