hello,

editor brianna milnewriter lola arielle lopez

Page 3: dear you magazine - issue two july

welcome to the second issue of dear you magazine. it has been a pleasure to create this magazine and i en-joyed every minute of it. of course without the lovely contributors, this magazine would be nothing but a blank set of pages. so to all the contributors, a big than-kyou. this issue focuses mainly on the beauty of grow-ing up. now me being sixteen myself, i have learnt that growing up is certainly not easy. there will be downfalls and moments where you just want to dig yourself a hole and die, but remember that you will always over-come the darkness. i recently just went through a bitter period of my life but with the help of God, i learnt that there is always a silver lining. now i’m not trying to pressure you into religion but all i’m saying is that you have to have faith, whatever that faith may be. always believe in yourself and others and never regret any-

thing. keep smiling and dancing,

I caught raindrops in my palm,Standing on rough sandAnd watching the ocean swellWith the fresh, new water of Spring.

The air tasted of salt,Lilacs, and something forgottenLingering in my brainLingering in my brainJust above my spinal cord.

The boy was there,Holding the sky in his palmsAnd weeping- always the sameGolden tears.

That was when I realized it was a dream."Who are you?" I called."Who are you?" I called. He dropped the sky,Blue shattered and the rain stopped.

"Don't break your wings."He warned in a voice the colourOf sunset poppies."Don't break them, or—"

The waves crashed and he was gone. The waves crashed and he was gone.I stood alone again on the sand,Blue sky fragmented at my feet.My wings fluttered in the wind.

I held up my hand for the rain to return,And a monarch butterfly, regal,Precise in every movement,Alighted on my fingertip.Alighted on my fingertip.

"Don't break your wings." It warned. Its eyes were black as snakes."Who are you?" I cried."Why do you always leave me?"

The butterfly crumpled,Dissolving as the rain returned,Salty as the ocean.Salty as the ocean. He called to me in a voice like sunset poppies."Don't break your wings, my dear,Don't let the butterfly die."

When we are young, we go through the hardest thing of all: growing up.

It’s important to know that no matter who you are, you are beautiful. Every-

body has a talent and everybody has something good about themselves.

One of the things we struggle with is the pressure from other peers. There

will usualy always be someone who will try to take you down or try to

make you think that you are worthless. Regardless of what they say, you

are beautiful no matter what. Sometimes we think that life is pointless and

thatthat there is no reason we should be living. But life has so many opportu-

nities and so many reasons to be happy. The power of positivity is the key

to a smile on the inside and outside. When times get tough, count your

blessings and be greatful for what you have. Don’t hate yourself and don’t

compare yourself to others. Life is special, treat it with care. Create a wall

of positive words to remind you that you are a beautiful soul. If anything is

on your mind you can talk to someone and you can get help. Never be

afraid to cry out; you are never alone. You are important and you matter.

love, me

dear youyouyou hide inside my memories, every day of every year. i’m the paper

and you’re the glue; i am completely stuck to you. you treat me like

dirt, like soggy mud that sits and rotts. i am dying inside and you

are living. i feel like i am made of sand because i’m always being

washed away by your hurtful words. not only do you tease me with your

words, but you knock me down with your actions. i remember when you

used to be all mine. we would melt into eachother - mould into eacho-

ther.ther. love was us and we lived within its spirit. you would pull me

close, so close that i could hear your heart beating and you would

stroke my hair until i was asleep in your arms. nothing in the world

stopped us from loving eachother. but one day my world of sunshine

became my world of darkness. you left me to bleed. i am broken and i

just want you to know that you were the biggest mistake of my life.

in life you must learn from your mistakes; if you don’t, you become

the mistake.the mistake.

Q. What age did you start photography and what got you into it?A. A. I guess I've been taking photos in some way or another for quite a few years now, but it's only been in the past year or so that I've really started to take it seriously and gone places just to take photos. I travelled to Canada last year and wanted to document my time away, so I joined this site called 'Flickr' to share my photos with my family back home. When I was on there I stumbled across something called a '365 project' -where the photographer takes one photo a day for a year and so I decided on a whim to do that too. I finished the project in early May this year and it was nice to see how much my photography had grown.

Q. Q. How would you describe your style of photography?A. I find it really hard to put things in boxes, I dont like to be too predictable. I think my style is probably a combination of whimsical, landscape and I do some typography. Nature features heavily - I love finding interesting locations and shooting amongst the landscape. I write a lot too, and try to combine the words with my images to add to the whole story.

41

Page 47: dear you magazine - issue two july

Q. If you had the chance to photograph someone famous, who would it be and why?

A. You know, I've never really thought about that before! Hhmmm. Someone who I can experi-ment with and do something different. Perhaps Sufjan Stevens because he has such a unique quality about him and I'd love to add him to the landscape. I'd also enjoy the opportunity to stare at him though the lens for a while. Hahaha ;)

Q. What does photography mean to you?A. A lot! I've always been a creative soul, whether its music, drama or writing and I feel that with pho-tography you can combine all of those elements. There is not much that beats the feeling of capturing something really special - a moment in time that will never be again but can live on in a photo.

Q. What cameras/lenses do you use?A. I got my first DSLR in december last year, its a Canon 1000D rebel xs named Pete and I really havent picked up my old point and shoot since then. I just use the kit lens but hopefully soon I can up-grade that too. Theres no looking back! Haha. I also have a vintage olympus om10 film camera named Roger - which I found in a thrift store in Vancouver, Canada. He is really beautiful and I love experimenting with film.

Q. Have any tips for people who want to get into photography?A. Go for it! When you're starting off there is no need for expensive equipment - get yourself a point and shoot and just start shooting. Experiment! Try different locations. Take photos of things you are inter-ested in, dont worry about impressing anyone else. Models are often hard to find, so take self portraits and learn about angles and lighting. I think you learn so much from just getting out there and doing. You have nothing to lose!

Q. Who inspires you?A. Oh wow, where to start? I am honestly inspired by so many of the wonderful people on Flickr! A small selection would include: Rosa Joy, Lexi Mire, Karrah Kobus, Laura Leal Aparicio and Alex Stoddard. Nature inspires me so much and also various artists, musicians and my friends.

I need to know what it feels like to live. I won't survive. We won't survive. I will live a life that's true, painful and just as beautiful as a morning sun, or a new moon. Running in open fields, feeling the grass below my feet as if I were not touching the ground, as if I was running so fast to start flying, spreading my wings and crying out to the world that I amam free. Free from the judgements , free from the hy-pocrisy free from all and nothing. Just living a life that's worth living, the way it was meant to be from the very start. And when my wings will tire out, and I'll fall to the ground, I'll start running again faster than before.

Running into the unknown, playing with fire without getting burned, blowing out the sun only to fly up into the sky to light it again. Swimming the whole ocean with the weight that drags me down. Being buried alive by the troubles made of sand, shaking off the dust and taking a step up.

Keep stepping up.

OnceOnce I've seen it all, i’ll run back the way I came from, flying up again. Only to explore everything a second time with the eyes of a child. That same child that allowed me to live the life I wanted, the life I had always dreamed of living. From heaven things are different, I bet you they wish they were here, just to take my example and set their wings to fly.Always aim for the sky.Always aim for the sky.

Some people call it fate. A tragedy. An enduring love story that love knows no boundaries even between time and space.

TheThe novel The Time Traveler's Wife is pretty much a clever and unconventional story of a man named Henry with a very rare genetic disorder known as Chronic Dis-placement Disorder that cause him to involuntarily travel in time who drops in and out of various moments in his life -- sometimes back to the past, sometimes forward to the future. His wife Claire has to suffer the sadness of his absences as well as the danger in many of his journey. absences as well as the danger in many of his journey.

Q. You have so much talent! What age did you start photographing?Hmm what age did I start photography? It’s hard to draw a line. My first digital camera that I had was when I was 14 I think. Back than I shot a lot of photos but I had no clue how a camera really worked. For my birthday this year in February I got a Canon 500d and I think that’s the point where I started to understand the process of photography.

Q. What inspired you to take photos? Some years I started to take pictures together with my best friend as a model and I think it was her who inspired Some years I started to take pictures together with my best friend as a model and I think it was her who inspired me. Her face is just so unique and beautiful; a face you just gave to photograph! Then in 2010 I went to Brazil for a year. It was just such a marvellous time so I didn't want to miss a second of it and I didn't. I still have all the photos here who remind me of the beautiful people I met on the other side of the world.

Q. Do you prefer shooting in natural lighting or with studio lighting?I have actually never shot in a studio so I can't judge if natural or studio light is better or which one I prefer. But I have actually never shot in a studio so I can't judge if natural or studio light is better or which one I prefer. But even though I think I like natural light best, it’s just so unpredictable. It can be your lover and enemy at the same time.

Q. What's your perspective on photography? I have never been a good writer; I am actually pretty bad in finding the right words, but with my photos I do, at least for me. I know that sounds pretty cliché but it’s my way of expressing things.

57

Page 65: dear you magazine - issue two july

Q. Who inspires you?Everyone and nobody…that’s a hard question. There are a lot of great talented artists on Flickr who really are a huge inspiration for me but I do find a lot of ideas from songs I hear, the nature around me and light. Most of my ideas just pop into my head on a boring Sunday afternoon.

If only I had courage, I would reach out and kiss you. I mean I can see it perfectly in my mind and the inane effects that I can imagine. I'd sit there and we'd talk, something slight and something fun, but suddenly your mood would look damp. Something would come across your mind and you'd venture to explore into it, something sad, something you wished for; a longing persay. I'd wish for you to forget about it, think about the now, forget the pain and sorrows. But you knew you couldn't do it, you knew there would be no way to forget it. Right there, I'd kiss you. Soft, subtle, my heart and soul put behind something so little.little. But with something so little the world would dissapear along with your doubts and fears. A warmth of uncertainty; a pleasure of knowing I'd be here for you... Or atleast thats

what I'd wish would happen.

Just thinking about a kiss, something I've never had experienced before, a warmth rushes through my body. I wonder how you would react if I just up and kissed you. So many per-fect moments, or atleast I think would be perfect. I'd dream about it forever and hate to wake up to the realization that I am alone. At some random moment, we'd be sitting there, and for no reason I'd kiss you, out of happiness and joy. How would you react? It pleasures

me to fantasize, and it pains me to remember reality.

How could one simple kiss bring such a curiousity to my mind? How can longing for such a simple thing burn inside of me? How come I think I could melt your heart with a kiss?

How come I think I could solve your problems with a simple kiss?

the tender side of love73

Page 81: dear you magazine - issue two july

What is love? What is it for? Try to answer these two questions, and it will take you a lifetime to even just understand the questioning. Don't ever search for your prince; he was probably killed by a car while riding on his gorgeous white horse to your house. (This sen-tence was just as real as love is.) Or maybe his navigation just sucks and he landed somewhere in the desert Sahara (but don't blame it on Google Maps.) Always look forward to work on the relationship with yourself, yourself, it's the most important in life. Because no matter what happens, you will always be by yourself. A man will always love a strong woman, and that's when you will get found – when you've become strong.

Women in general don't understand the difference between finding and searching. They can't wait for something to start. They already imagine names for the children they will have with a man they barely spoke a whole sentence with. This is why love hurts. Expecting too much, receiving not a tiny bit of that. Unrequited love indeed has destructive powers. The girl who seemed unbreakable, broke. The girl who always laughed, cried. The girl that never stopped trying, finally gave up. finally gave up.

Love tests us - our limits, our patience, our will to be happy. If you find the right person, you will suffer until you will be finally togeth-er. But as long as you have selfless, utilizing people in your life, you will have a good 15-minutes and then suffer. Not only because of the disappointmens and the feeling of emptiness in your heart, but also of loss of confidence in humanity. And this – otherwise than a heartbreak – is impossible to recover.
