Interschool Sports & Lightning Carnival Last Friday, our Year 5 and 6 students played Craigie Heights PS in the last of the scheduled interschool matches. Once again, our students are to be congratulated on their efforts. Poseidon won the football, and both netball games and Craigie Heights won the hockey. The soccer game was a nil all draw.

The Interschool Lightning Carnival is on Friday, June 23.

Sports will be played at the following venues –

Netball Bouncers Indoor Sports Centre (Joondalup)

Hockey Eddystone Primary School

Soccer Eddystone Primary School

Football Heathridge Park, Sail Terrace Heathridge

The students playing in the Football, Hockey and Soccer teams will leave school at 10:30am with the first match commencing at 11:30am. The girls in the Netball teams will be leaving school at 10:00 am. They will be collected by bus with all the other schools’ Netball teams to travel to Bouncers Indoor Sports Centre. Netball games are of 2 (10 minute) halves with a 5 minute half-time break. Hockey, Soccer and AFL games are of 2 (15 minute) halves with a 5 minute half time break. All teams will play 3 matches. Please check your Lightning Carnival Program to work out when our matches have been scheduled.

Focus on Cooperative Learning Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up In room 16, we use this class building Cooperative Learning Strategy to motivate, activate prior learning and to display accountability. This strategy ensures children are engaged in their learning. The steps are:

All students stand up and put their hands up.

Students mingle, mix, practice a meeting and greeting and find a partner (in Room 16 we have a strict rule of no ‘drive bys’).

Children share their information on a set topic.

After a certain time this strategy is then repeated.

Lost Property

Over the last two terms we have had an abundance of lost property. To help alleviate this amount of lost property, it would be appreciated if parents/caregivers could ensure all clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles and any other items be clearly marked with the student’s name.

Dance Program Finale The Dance Finale will be held on Monday, June 26 in the undercover area. Parents are encouraged to come along and enjoy seeing the students strut their dancing skills around the undercover area. Parents will also be given the opportunity to join and have a dance with their son or daughter. The canteen is planning to offer a special lunch as well on that day and it is hoped that parents will stay to have lunch as well. More details will be provided closer to the big day.

Safety Suggestions for Students Due to a number of suspicious incidents around schools in the northern suburbs this term that have been brought to the school’s attention, I thought it timely to remind families of the police information for students to take care when going to and from school, and to report anything suspicious to parents, school and the police – call 000 in an emergency or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers.

PLEASE MAKE THE TIME TO TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT HOW TO STAY SAFE.

Here are some simple suggestions to help children stay safer:

Always travel in company

Walk on the right hand side of the road so you face oncoming traffic

Wherever possible, leave space between yourself and the roadway

Stay in areas that are well lit

Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations

Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably

If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number

If a passing car stops nearby never get too close

Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk

Provide this advice to brothers and sisters, especially if younger

Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and the police, noting number plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features of individuals.

We are trialling a new meeting time at 3:00pm on Mondays. The P&C meet in the staff room and Rm 9 has been made available for the young children of the P&C during the meeting. However one parent of the P&C must be present to supervise the children for duty of care reasons. So if you have been unable to attend due to not having a babysitter, this option might suit you. The P&C always welcome and encourage new parents to come and see a meeting or help out in any way they can.

Reading your child’s report

Could try harder . . . always does her best . . . lacks concentration . . . easily distracted . . . a pleasure to teach . . . Do these comments, taken from a batch of student reports sound familiar? Student reports bring mixed feelings for parents. Pleasure and pride if they are performing well but considerable angst when children are not progressing as you hoped.

Reports can mean anxious times for children too. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children. Kids of all ages take their cues from their parents, so your reaction to their school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people.

Before you rip open the sealed envelope containing the report do a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind:

1 Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in line with their ability?

Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then kids can be turned off learning. Too low and there is nothing to strive for. Pitch your expectations in line with your child’s abilities. A quick check of your child’s last report cards may provide you with a good yardstick.

2 Do you believe that children learn at different rates?

There are slow bloomers, late developers and steadyas-you-go kids in every classroom, so

avoid comparing your child to siblings, your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child. Instead look for individual progress.

3 Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it?

Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as possible.

School reports come in different formats. Some are prescriptive while some use grading systems such as A, B, C, etc. with room for teacher comments. Regardless of the format school reports should provide you with an idea of your child’s progress in all subject areas, their attitude and social development.

Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report:• Focus on strengths. Do you look for

strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is to focus on strengths even if they are not in the traditional 3Rs or core subjects.

• Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report indicates that effort is below standard, then you have something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then you cannot ask any more than that, regardless of the grading.

• Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social setting. How your child gets along with his or her peers will influence his happiness and well-being, as well as give an indicator to his future. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by employers so don’t dismiss these as unimportant.

• Take note of student self-assessment. Kids are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. They are generally very perceptive so take note of their opinions.

• Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns.

After reports are read and discussed celebrate your child’s efforts with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise progress and remind them that the holidays are just around the corner when they can forget about assessment, tests and reports for a while.

Reports can mean anxious times for children. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children.
