Dear Padre August 12, 2018 What does doxology mean? The verses of a popular gospel song, “How Can I Keep From Singing,” speak of our struggle with sorrow and darkness, and the ulmate joy we have knowing “Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, / How can I keep from singing?” The songwriter joyfully sings out because of God’s love; it’s a doxology of praise. Doxology, “a glorious uerance,” is a prayer the Church uses to give God praise. We have countless examples in Scripture, such as the psalms, which by their nature give God righul praise. The Sanctus acclamaon is another example. Taken from Isaiah 6, it directs our focus to praising God for his power and might. On Christmas night we sing “Glory to God in the highest,” a doxology from the angels. The Eucharisc prayers end with a doxology to the Trinity showing how “the Holy Spirit who thus awakens the memory of the Church then inspires thanksgiving and praise (doxology),” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1103. We use doxologies to emphasize our worship of God, acknowledging his righul praise. Doxologies are part of major liturgical prayers such as the Eucharisc prayers, the communion rite where we add a doxology following the Our Father. We also add doxologies to our personal prayers. The rosary contains a well-known doxology called the Gloria Patri, a prayer praising the eternal nature and love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. —Fr. John K. Schmidt, CSsR It is better to say one Our Father fervently and devoutly than a thousand with no devotion and full of distraction. ~St. Edmund KERYGMA (kah-rig’-mah) Kerygma is the initial and essential proclamation of the Gospel Message that people are brought to the decision to entrust themselves to Jesus Christ by faith.

From the Pastor’s Desk

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 5, 2018

Most Americans eat well. To have three square meals a day is not uncommon. Indeed, some may eat five or six times a day, if coffee breaks, evening snacks and other times of eating are counted, in addition to breakfast, lunch, and supper. Drive through a town of any consequence and count the number of fast food places and restaurants that are found. At some corners of major roads or along a block or two of a busy thoroughfare you may find five to ten eating establishments. It is not uncommon to find in close proximity McDonald's, Burger King, Hardee’s, Arby's, Subway, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Dairy Queen, Wendy's, and Taco Bell as well as lesser-known or local look-a-like fast food establishments. Go into a major supermarket and count the variety of products that are similar. The only discernible difference often is in the trade name. Whole aisles will be filled with a vast array of cereals. Another aisle will be filled with competing brands of soft drinks: Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sprite, Mello Yello, 7 Up, and lesser known or store brands. Try to find in the same area a religious bookstore. Compare the size of the religious book and supply store with the supermarket.

It does not appear that people are as eager to be fed spiritually as they are to be fed physically! In John 6, Jesus takes the preoccupation of the crowds with food and drink as an occasion to move from physical eating and drinking to the more important needs of the spirit. Nourishment is needed for spiritual life and growth. When we are hungry, do we ever think of asking God to fill us? Is our hunger really for “bread” when what we truly long for is the knowledge of God’s mercy and His grace in our lives? Let us ask the Lord to lead us to a new awareness of His presence so we can receive with gratitude the fullness of Christ, the Bread of Life.

Amen!
