Why Catholic VBS is best
I want to send my daughter to Vacation Bible School at a nearby Protestant church. My husband insists we send her to a Catholic VBS across town. It’s five half-days of fun and games-does it matter whether its Catholic?
While it’s true that much of VBS is games, crafts, and snacks, it’s best for Catholic children to go to Catholic VBS because Protestant VBS doesn’t in-clude Catholic content like sacraments, saints, and practices. A solid Catholic VBS program integrates well with the standard religion curriculum. The Bible lessons should have an imprimatur, and verses should come from a Catholic version of the Bible. Look for Catechism citations to see the teachings the program supports. The theme—a camp, a treasure hunt, the beach—is im-portant but not as important as the content. If no nearby parishes are hosting VBS, encourage your parish to do it next year. Many Catholic publishers (including Liguori) sell inexpensive starter kits with step-by-step instruc-tions for planning and running a VBS as well as teacher materials, music, dec-orating ideas, and sample accessories. If parishioners donate art supplies, decorating materials, snacks, and prizes, the parish’s overall cost is minimal. A common challenge is finding enough volunteers. Sometimes several parish-es pool their talent to offer one large VBS; others use teen or senior volun-teers. If you do VBS right, you can engage your entire parish in teaching chil-dren about Jesus—and there’s nothing more Catholic than that

Let's be honest. Agreeing to teach kids about the faith is a daunting prospect. Not only do you commit to being present every Wednesday night into eterni-ty (OK, not quite that long), but you also have to deal with kids, and worse, their parents! On any given night, you might have Malcolm using the cross book-mark the class made as a sword, Amy's mother com-plaining that her child doesn't know what the Church teaches, and Kyle using his cell phone as you're trying to teach the Sermon on the Mount.

6. You become an active part of the most active part of your parish. When you join the catechists in your parish, you enter into a community that will support you on your faith journey, pray for and with you and encourage you in your Catholic way of life.
5. A catechist is a role model.
As a catechist, you get to model behaviors young people might not learn anywhere else.

Being a catechist is a way of being a good steward by giving a bit of your most pre-cious resources — your time

Taking time out of your life to teach the faith shows your own children, grandchildren, siblings and family members that you put a high priority on religious education.

Tri Parish News From the Pastor’s Desk
A number of years ago an article ap-peared in the Reader’s Digest. It was about a Catholic advertising executive. In spite of her successful career, she felt emptiness in her life. One morn-ing, during a breakfast meeting with her marketing consultant, she men-tioned that emptiness. “Do you want to fill it?” her colleague asked. “Of course I do,” she said. He looked at her and replied, “Then start each day with an hour of prayer.” She looked at him and said, “Don, you’ve got to be kidding. If I tried that I’d go off my rocker. “Her friend smiled and said “That’s exactly what I said 20 years ago.”
Then he said something else that real-ly made her think. He said, “You’re trying to fit God into your life. Instead, you should be trying to fit your life around God.” The woman left the res-taurant in turmoil. Begin each morning with prayer? Begin each morning with an hour of prayer? Absolutely out of the question! Yet, the next morning the woman found herself doing exactly that.
And she’s been doing it ever since. The woman is the first to admit that it has not always been easy. There have been mornings when she was filled with great peace and joy. But there have been other mornings when she was filled with nothing but weariness. And it was on these weary mornings that she remembered something else that her marketing consultant said: “There will be times when your mind just won’t go into God’s sanctuary. That’s when you spend your hour in God’s waiting room. Still, you’re there, and God appreciates your struggle to stay there. What’s important is the commitment.”

Peace Garden Field Mass July 10- - - - Bishop Kagan will be the main celebrant at the 56th Annual
Knights of Columbus Peace Garden Field Mass on Sunday, July 10. Mass begins at noon. The Field Mass origi-nated in 1960 and has been held on the second Sunday in July continuously for more than 50 years. People gath-er from two nations on the U.S. –Canadian border to promote good relationships and pray for peace for all nations.
Summer Lovin’ block party July 16- - - - All are welcome to join the Summer
Lovin’ block party on Saturday, July 16 from 6-10 p.m. at Hillside Park in Bismarck. The diocese’s Office of Family Ministry invites everyone to enjoy a grill out meal and a band, playground bounce house for entertainment. Seminarian golf tournament on July 18- - - -Golfers are welcome at the seminarian golf tournament on
Monday, July 18 at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan. Registration begins at noon with shotgun start at 1 p.m. Register by June 29 to participate. Cost is $125 per player for the 18-hole scramble style tournament. Each team will consist of four players with a priest or seminarian as team captain. Town and Country Celebration July 24- - - - Celebrate the Town and Country Mass on Sunday, July
24 at the farm of Rosalind and Larry Leier near Hauge. Blessing of animals and machinery begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by Mass with Bishop Kagan at 12:15 p.m. A free lunch and entertainment will follow. The Leier farm is located 12 miles north of Hauge.
