Deanery News Dear all, As we look forward to Christmas, there are many opportunities to reach out to more people in our parishes. Do please have a look at what some of our churches are planning to do. You're very welcome to the services, or to borrow their ideas! At our last Deanery Synod we heard from Kat and Ellie, our Diocesan Learning and Formation Officers. They talked about the different ways they are seeking to encourage discipleship and support people in their roles through training. This complements the training and courses that we are already offering as a Deanery, and they will be producing a booklet giving details of upcoming training that is being offered around the diocese. In other Deanery news, the four Anglican churches across the town of Swadlincote are seeking to work together more closely as Swadlincote Minster. This is about finding a new way of sharing and working together, to enable ministry and mission to happen across the town in ways that none of the churches by themselves could manage. Amongst other things, a cafe-style service is already running and is well attended, and there are plans for a Minster Messy Church and Missional Communities to start shortly. Missional Communities are groups of 20 or so people who will meet in non-church buildings to disciple each other and work within their local community, to grow God's kingdom. This is a very exciting initiative that the Archdeacon and Bishop are very supportive of. The four churches have met together for a joint service and vision day. As a sign of the new way in which the churches are working there is going to be a service at which the clergy and Readers will be licensed to all four parishes. Bishop Jan will be leading and preaching at this, which is at 7pm on Wed 28th November at St John's Newhall. Everyone is very welcome. Do also send in reports and pictures of your Light Parties, Remembrance services, and Christmas events. It is always encouraging to hear what churches are up to, and it is also a good way of sharing ideas. Elvaston and Weston on Trent

Around 30 people came to celebrate St Bartholomew's day on the 24th August at Elvaston church. our guest preacher was Bishop Peter Fox, who has been a Bishop in Papua new Guinea and Norwich Diocese, he gave a very engaging sermon and wonderful refreshments were shared

afterwards.

This is one of a series of special services in the Trent and Derwent

churches.

Over 40 people came to St Mary's Weston on Trent to celebrate the feast

of St Michael and All Angels. Bishop Jack Nicholls gave a wonderful

sermon and we welcomed Charlotte as an altar server and dedicated our

new lectern in memory of Kenneth Boyce.

It was good to see people from the other churches in our benefice.

The next in our series of special services will be at Aston on

Trent on Sunday 3rd November when Bishop Jan will celebrate All

Saints tide.

Derbyshire’s New Bell Ringers to Honour WW1 Fallen

In our diocese, over 70 people of all ages have learnt to ring this year ready for Remembrance Sunday, 11 November 2018, for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. They are some of the 2000 people who have joined the national #RingingRemembers campaign to honour the bell ringers who died in WW1. The new bell ringers have joined teams of current ringers in churches throughout the Diocese of Derby, giving their local churches and communities that iconic soundscape for Sundays, Christmas, weddings and special occasions. New bell ringers soon become 'hooked' on their new activity, enjoying exhilarating new experiences, effective workouts, challenges and rewards and a fun social life. New ringers are still being recruited. If you are interested, please sign up before 11 November 2018. On the morning of 11 November 2018, muffles will be used to make bells sound alternately loud then soft when they are rung in remembrance of those who gave their lives serving our country. In the afternoon and evening the muffles will be removed and bells will ring out in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice: at 12:30pm for 'Ringing Remembers' and at 7:05pm for 'Battle's Over - Ringing Out for Peace'.
