DE VIBE OPEN MIC AND LOUNGE FEATURING SIMON PIPEIron Sharpen Iron produce this main event Saturday May 24th at Infinity on the Beach hotel

On Saturday May 24th, spoken word artist D.J Simmons of Iron Sharpen Iron is proudly presenting De Vibe Open Mic. For the first time this quality event will be taking place at the land side facility of the Infinity on the Beach hotel located in the heart of entertainment central in Barbados, St. Law-rence Gap.

The show features well respected and skilled singer and guitarist Simon Pipe. Simon’s music is the love child of pop and reggae - catchy hooks and romantic melodies sitting on top of deep drum pulses and rootsy guitars. Besides living a past life as the lead guitarist in the island’s most promi-nent reggae act, Simon is a formally trained audio engineer, owns a recording studio and has a ten-dency to surf.

De Vibe Open Mic was orginally birthed in 2011 with the vision of building the perfect ambiance budding with confidence and creativity where any artist could find their niche and network hub. From its beginnings hosted by D.J Simmons at Dis Is It bar, and Empress Zingha at The Good Life Cafe, the shows have always attracted beautiful and appreciative audiences. Now it has evolved into the monthly main event at the gorgeous Infinity hotel.

In November 2007, Adrian Green and D.J Simmons established the brand Iron Sharpen Iron with a drive and focus to contribute and aid in the development of spoken word and local lyricists in the island, providing a stage for talent to be showcased. Some of their past productions include the live events Talk Hard, Echoes of the Ancestors, Iron Mic, Ironmakon, among others, and artists who have guest appeared at the shows include Mahalia of the band Nexcyx, Mic Check, Bobo, Azman, G-Syndicate, James Lovell, The Mighty Gabby, Canadian based poet Dwayne Morgan, Kid Site, Rebel Glam, Damian Marvay, 1688 Orchestra, iNDRANi, and more.

De Vibe Open Mic and Lounge is proudly supported by Smirnoff and their creative cocktails, the catering of Lee’s Bistro, Parhelion 120 Stage Lighting, Lawnkrank Productions and the great staff of Infinity on the Beach hotel. Doors open for the event at 7:30 pm and admission is $20 on the night or $15 via tickets available from D.J Simmons and The Good Life Cafe. A dress code of Confident is excitedly enforced. Your support of this venture is greatly appreciated and we are thanking you in anticipation.

Simon Pipe walks barefoot, lives at the beach and kicks back with a cold one after a long day in the studio. Or a short day, whatever.

His music is the love child of pop and reggae - catchy hooks and romantic melodies sitting on top of deep drum pulses and rootsy guitars. Besides living a past life as the lead guitarist in the island’s most prominent reggae act, Simon is a formally trained audio engineer, owns a recording studio and has a tendency to surf.

Simon Pipe wrote, recorded and produced his 18 track debut album titled “Ya Probably Shouldn’ta” while playing all the instruments, including rum bottles, dustbins - even taking a stab at some bodhran and mandolin. “Ya Probably Shouldn’ta” is on sale island wide and album #2 is already in the works.

This inspirational spoken word artist stands as an example of following one’s dream and he is an in-finite source of encouragement. D.J’s work is filled of songs for every season and a rhyme for every reason.

For Jason Morris, music is who he is and where he always wanted to be. His love affair with music started at the early age of 4, and was reinforced through various musical groups and orchestras of the Christ Church (now Mylton Lynch) Primary and Queen’s College Secondary school orchestras. These formative years allowed Jason to quickly forge his musical foundation, quickly becoming rec-ognized by the school for his musical prowess and aptitude. In addition to improving his playing ability, and successfully completing examinations in practical and theory of music. Jason also ex-panded his appetitie to include new instruments, infulences and styles becoming one of the inaugu-ral members of the Queen’s College ‘Tuk Band’ and Steel Pan orchestra.

Jomo began to play the drums at Ellersie Secondary School, where he played fo rthe cadets and lat-er played the full drum set with the school orchestra, moving on to play with the Barbados Youth Orchestra. During that time he had the honour of a drum lesson with Barbadian legend el Verno del Congo. In 2008 Jomo stumbled upon a djembe drum one night by happy circumstance while at a bar with some friends, and got the opportunity to play it. Unable to get a djembe for himself, he chose the Conga. Now he plays anywhere he can, infecting others with his passion for his instrument and his knowledge of beats.
