REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR

THE 19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Liturgy of the Word contains another Theophanic

revelation from God. Last Sunday’s Gospel according to Matthew,

Jesus performed one of His “feeding” miracles This miracle revealed

several aspects of God’s love for mankind. First, it showed that the

Divine preference was to work with mankind not just for him.

Often times, people seek favors from God according to their will

not His. God, however, oftentimes work through his creatures.

Using available meager resources, Jesus thanked God (in Greek

“eucharistia” or thanksgiving), blessed the food and had His disciples

distribute it. Thus, unlike the manna that fell from heaven, Jesus

multiplies what is available to meet the current need. Then, he

directs his followers to distribute the food meeting the need. In the

end, God’s generosity is revealed in that there was an abundant

surplus left, demonstrating that God is generous and loving.

Secondly, this miracle becomes a precursor for an even greater

miracle by Christ at the Last Supper – the formation of the New

Covenant and the distribution of food that meets mankind’s spiritual

needs. Finally, this act revealed the Divinity of Christ, Himself, in

that He was the sole author of the miracle. The event clearly fell

within His power to solve their problem. In today’s liturgy, the

“unseen” God continues to reveal Himself in a variety of

circumstances, culminating in Christ’s revelation of His Divine.

REFLECTIONS on the READINGS for THIS SUNDAY , CONT INUED

Deacon Rob

In the first reading from the First Book of Kings, the Theophanic revelation is found in the way Yahweh reveals Himself to Elijah. A god in the ancient world was anthropomorphic. He was shaped in the image of man. A god of the ancient world would be described as a super-being who would be awesome, all-powerful, intimidating and imposing. When the Hebrew God calls the prophet out of the cave, Elijah experiences many events that would typically be associated with a god, i.e. power-ful winds, crushing rocks, earth-quakes and firestorm; however, in all these experiences, God was not present. Finally, the prophet hears a whispering sound in which his God is present. Thus, God reveals qualities about Himself – Love and Gentleness. These qualities are not the human equivalent as depicted in their pagan counterparts. Rather, they are what humans viewed as weaknesses. The love is sacrificial and giving, not lustful, just as the gentle-ness is merciful and caring. Elijah’s God, while omniscient and omnipotent, is also paternal willing to form an intimate relationship with his creatures. Unlike pagan gods, Yahweh does not impose Himself and demand worship. He offers Himself in a Covenantal relationship.

In the Letter of Paul to the Romans, Paul addresses his deep sorrow for his fellow Jews who do not recognize the Covenantal fulfillment of their God in the Divine Jesus as the Messiah. Their failure is a rejection of this paternal desire of God to be with His people. Paul reflects upon how the Jews are a “chosen” people who have had multiple encounters with God culminating in the Messiah when God, Himself, walked with His people to bring them closer. Nonetheless, Paul affirms that despite their rejection of Jesus, God will find a way to reveal Himself as he continues to shepherd His new flock. He will always reach out to the Jews despite their stubbornness and hardness of heart. This steadfast quality of faithfulness found in the Divine is the thrust of Paul’s arguments as he concludes his reflection with a deepened faith. It is this faith that culminates in new Family of God formed through His Church.

Finally, our Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Gospel of Matthew’s account of Jesus’ walking on the water and enabling Peter to do the same if he has faith. This story occurs just after Jesus had fed the multitude with a miracle. Jesus had separated himself from his disciples to pray and had ordered his apostles to cross to the other side of the sea in a boat. As the apostles were crossing, they encountered a great storm which tossed the boat and

instilled great fear in all. They were terrified, then sudden-ly, Jesus is seen walking on the water towards them. Peter is stunned and asks the Lord to let the Prince of the Apostles, himself, to walk towards Him on water. As Peter

begins, he loses confidence and begins to sink crying out to Jesus for help. Christ reaches out and supports the shaken apostle. Boarding the boat, Jesus admonishes Peter for his lack of faith as the seas and winds die down. This walking on water and the enabling of Peter to accomplish the same feat demonstrates Christ’s power to accomplish any request if the faith of the individual is great enough. Sharing this ability can only be accomplished by the Divine Will. Thus, Matthew is verifying a Theogonic feat proving the divinity of Jesus to the apostles. In addition to this, the compassion and love found in Jesus is also emphatically expressed. Early Christians saw in this miracle that their faith in Christ

would help them survive the trials and tribulations they were destined to experience. This Theogonic revelation assured them that, as their faith grew, it was superior and more valuable than anything the world could offer. They and we know that our acceptance of God’s Will and our Faith in Him through Christ will garner the rich rewards that God has to offer.

Thus, the message for today is found in faith. In today’s world, people have the tendency to dismiss things that cannot be explained or accepted as scientifically sound. Society has become so arrogant and immune to the Divine message that it entirely doubts or dismisses things of the supernatural. God’s very existence is doubted by many and accounts of miracles are ranked as “superstition”. If God’s existence is challenged, then Satan’s existence vanishes, too. Nothing is more harmful to the soul’s existence than a disbelief in these beings. People have forsaken their concern for their afterlife to tirelessly garner worldly riches. Holy Mother the Church desires humanity to look at the miracle of God’s creation and see the Divine Fingerprint. Likewise, our encounter with Christ’s modern daily miracle, the Eucharist, needs to be witnessed and appreciated by the modern Christian. We need to take our faith and develop it during our daily encounter with the “storms” of the world. Faith in Christ will allow us to “walk” the waters of our worldly storm and reach Christ. We are capable to overcome any obstacle that we encounter through Faith. All we need to do is to reach out and take His Divine Hand.

SAINT EDITH STEIN (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross)

August 9

Edith Stein, born in 1891 in

Poland, was the youngest child

of a large Jewish family. She

was an outstanding student

and was well versed in

philosophy with a particular

interest in phenomenology

(the study of structures of

consciousness as experienced

from the first-person point of

view). Eventually she became

interested in the Catholic faith,

and in 1922, she was baptized

at the Cathedral Church in

Cologne, Germany. Eleven years later Edith entered the

Carmelites. Because of the ramifications of politics in

Germany, Edith (whose religious name was Teresa

Benedicta of the Cross) was sent to the Carmelites in

Holland. When the Nazis conquered Holland, Sister Teresa

was arrested, and, with her sister Rose, was sent first to the

concentration camp at Westerbork. A Dutch official there

was so impressed by her sense of faith and calm, he offered

her an escape plan. Sr. Teresa vehemently refused his

assistance, stating: "If somebody intervened at this point

and took away [her] chance to share in the fate of [her]

brothers and sisters, that would be utter annihilation." Both

she and Rose were later sent to the concentration camp at

Auschwitz and died in the gas chambers there in 1942.

Even though her life was snuffed out by the evil of genocide,

her memory stands as a light undimmed in the midst of evil,

darkness, and suffering. In 1987, she was beatified in the

large outdoor soccer stadium in Cologne by Pope John Paul

II. She was canonized on October 11, 1998. She is one of the

six co-patron saints of Europe.

FELICITACIONES a todos los estudiantes que recibieron su Primera Comunión este verano. Publicaremos una lista pronto.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the students who received their First Communion this summer. We will be posting a list soon.
