Par humne soch liya tha ki kuch toh kar ke dikhayenge. (I used to feel bad that had I been earning something, I would not have heard ‘taanas’ from my in-laws. But I had made up my mind to prove myself.)” That is when she learnt about DDU-GKY, that it provides free skill training to the youth. She immediately enrolled into the Bedside Patient Assistant course for 3 months and packed her bags to the training centre in Ranchi within 10 days of enrolling. She is now working at Orchid Medical Centre, Ranchi since January 2016 and draws a salary of Rs. 6,000 per month. Today she supports her husband and has gained the respect of her in-laws. She is now saving to pursue her M.A. and has pledged to support her sister’s education. With a sense of pride she says “Achi naukri ho, kamaye toh izzat milti hai varna koi nahi poochta. Aurat agar chahe toh ghar bana sakti hai ya bigad sakti hai (With a good job and a regular income comes respect otherwise nobody cares for you. A Woman today can either break or make a household.)”

Jawahar from Akola district in Agra, Uttar Pradesh comes from a family of 5. His father passed away 3 years back when he had just passed class 12th. The household was run by his elder brother who is a schoolteacher would take private tuitions to support his family. In his pursuit to take off some burden from his brother’s shoulders, he enrolled in DDU-GKY to pursue a course in Hospitality in May 2015. By July he was recruited by Amazon to work as an Associate at a CTC of Rs. 12,000 monthly. He has also won a certificate for being the best performer during peak season deliveries. In fact recently, his younger brother cleared the interview process and joined Amazon as a Helper at a take home salary of Rs. 10,000 per month. In his words he says “Mereko future ka kuch pata nahi tha but aaj main apne parivar ko 8-9 hazar har mahine bhejta hun. Ab toh mere bhai ne bhi mere saath kaam karna shuru kar diya. Main bohot khush hun ki main apne parivar ko sambhal pa raha hun and vo bhi mujhe bohot encourage karte hain. (I was unsure about my future but today I send home Rs. 8-9,000 every month. Now even my younger brother has started working with me. I am very happy that I am able to support my family and they support me back and encourage me.)” Jawahar is now looking forward to appear for the interview for getting promoted.

“After working with illiterate contractors for years, DDU-GKY gave me a respectable job where I now work on a computer”

Bablu comes from a small village near Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. His father passed away when he was small, leaving his mother and sister behind. After working as a building contractor for 7 years, he joined DDU-GKY to learn Accounting. “Main anpad logon ke beech mein kaam karta tha. Gande se kapde pehnta tha. Cycle chalakar, jhola latkakar kaam pe jaata tha. Mujhe acha nahi lagta tha (I used to work among illiterates. I used to wear dirty clothes, ride to work on a bicycle with my stuff tied in a cloth. I dint like it)”. After completing his training, he joined Flipkart in October 2015 where he takes care of loading and unloading of packages and also works on excel to maintain the database. Earning a monthly salary of Rs. 7,500 gives him an opportunity to finally live his youth. “Ab hum sheher mein kaam karte hain toh apna shauk bhi poora karte hai… khana, peena, kapde, movie dekhna, yahan vahan ghoomna. Hum bachelor hai toh thodi masti bhi toh karenge. Contractor ki naukri mein toh thak jaate the din ke annt tak. Yahan aise kuch nahi hai. (Now that I work in a city, I am able to fulfill my desires..eating out, buying new clothes, watching movies, roaming around. I am a bachelor so its understood to have some fun. I used to get very tires by the end of the day when I used to work as a contractor. Here there is nothing like that)”. He saves around Rs. 2000-3000 every month in his bank account after sending Rs. 2000 to his mother. He plans to work hard, become experienced and grow in his profession.

Banita from Koraput district in Odisha, recently won the ‘Best Customer Service Award’ at Hypercity Mall in Noida, where she works, for going out of her way and helping an elderly woman customer. Banita comes from a family of 5, whose father has passed away. She now proudly contributes to the family income from her salary of Rs. 7,700/- per month. She also earns a target-linked incentive at the store, wherein in March 2016, she earned an extra Rs. 1,000/-. She proudly recounts “Agar mujhe training nahi mili hoti toh main itne ache se customers ko attend nahi kar paati aur na hi mujhe kabhi yeh award milta. Ghar pe toh koi opportunity nahi thi..shayad main kabhi Delhi aane ke soch bhi nahi paati..Meri mummy ne mujhe bohot support kiya yahan aane keliye…issliye maine apni pehli salary apni mummy ko bheji..vo bohot khush huyi and mujhe khoob ashirwaad diya (Without getting trained at DDU-GKY, I could never have attended the customers so well and could have never got the award. Back home, there are no opportunities, I could never have dreamt about coming to Delhi too. My mother supported me a lot in my dreams. That’s why I sent my first salary to her. She was very happy and gave me a lot of blessings.)”

“Now with my salary, I am helping people more needy than me”

Vinay, a resident of Garhwa district in Jharkhand belongs to a family of nine solely dependent on his father who works as a farmer. The only family income was the agrarian produce, which was merely sufficient for their consumption. Being an optimist and a hard worker, Vinay completed his basic schooling by working as a daily wage labourer. He would work for two to three days in a week to attend school for the rest of the days. Despite his extreme situation, he finished his class 10th along with actively participating in public service under the guidance of a local Church Pastor. He wanted to make public service his profession, but lack of education and monetary support prevented him from doing so. The Bedside Patient Assistant course from DDU-GKY came as an answer to his prayers because he could now make a living while helping people. He has been working with Orchid Hospital for the past 5 months and taking home a monthly salary of Rs. 6,000. “Mujhe bohot zaada acha lagta hai kyunki meri sooch ke hisaab se mujhe kaam mila hai (I love my work because I got exactly what I had in mind).” He recently got married and is now sending home Rs. 3,000 every month, being the first member from his family to get employed. One is left spellbound when he says “Apni income se main gareeb se gareeb logon ko daan deta hun gift mein, apni khushi se, Rs. 50-100 tak har mahine. (I try to give charity as a gift to people who are poorer than me, that too with my happiness, be it Rs. 50-100 every month).”

Sangeeta from Chatra district in Jharkhand, belongs to a family of 5 who depend on cultivation for their daily sustenance. When she had just completed her 12 th, her father was diagnosed with TB. She desperately started looking out for avenues to support her family. That’s when she attended an orientation session on DDU-GKY in her village and immediately enrolled for a three months program in Retail. There she learnt about how to deal with customers, how to make a sales pitch and at the same time, how to carry yourself. In May 2015, she was given placement at Minacs in Ranchi, which is a BPO run by Aditya Birla Group at a starting salary of Rs. 6,300 per month. This grew to Rs. 7,500 after 3 months and today she has been promoted with a salary of Rs. 10,500 per month. She took care of the complete treatment of her father, sends around Rs. 4,500 to her family every month, is now pursuing her graduation and also supporting the education of her 2 brothers. While the elder one is in High school studying Commerce, the younger one is in the 6th grade of an English medium school. She also bought a scooty for herself a few months back by making a full payment of Rs. 54,445. “Maine apni mummy ka sapna poora kiya. Gaon se koi bhi apni betiyon ko nahi bhejta bahar padne ya kaam karne. Par unhone bheja. Aaj main DDU-GKY se padh kar aage badh chukki hun. Mere mummy papa bohot khush hain. (I have fulfilled the dream of my mother. Nobody sends their daughter out from the village to study or work. But they did. Today I have succeeded in life after studying at DDU-GKY. My parents are very happy)”.

Roopwati from Hamidpur district in UP is an examp le of rural youth realizing their career aspiration. Coming from a poor family of 10, she was studying BA first year, with yearning to work and serve in the area of medicine. She received training in Nursing from Indian Institute of Natural Resource Management and is today working with Jaypee Hospitals in Noida as a Nursing Assistant. Seeing her passion and in recognition of her commitment, Jaypee has offered her the critical role in the ICU department. She earns Rs. 7,200/- per month and proudly sent her first salary to her parents. “Ab maine paison se main apne bhai beheno ko pada sakti hun. Jo pareshani mujhe dekhni padi, vo main unhe kabhi nahi dekhne dungi. (With my salary I will now educate my brothers and sisters. I will never let them face the problems that I faced)”.

Ankita hails from a small village called Jaipur near Chaibasa, which is in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. Her father, a small farmer was the sole earning member for a family of four. After completing her 12 th in Commerce she had no means to study further but she aspired to support her family’s income in some way. She got to know about a 3 months Banking and Accounting course being offered by DDU-GKY during an open session near her village. Her eagerness to make the most of the opportunity was proven as she had the maximum number of queries. Though her parents were a little hesitant in sending their only daughter to the city, all there worries were put to rest when they visited the JSLPS office and the training centre. Ankita came out as a completely transformed girl after 3 months. Talking confidently with a huge spreadsheet open on her computer she explains her job profile at Arohan Financial Services Pvt. Ltd. where she joined in September 2015 at a monthly take-home salary of Rs. 7,200. “Ye ek micro finance company hai to ek chotte bank ki tarah kaam karti hai. Hum yahan logon ko loan provide karte hain. Mera yahan pehle round mein hi selection ho gaya tha. (This is a micro finance company, which works as a small bank. Here we provide loans to customers. I was selected here in the first round itself)”. Today she sends home around Rs. 4,000 every month, is pursuing her graduation through distance learning and is also supporting her younger brother’s education who is pursuing a diploma in Engineering from Ranchi. She recently got promoted as a Sr. Data Entry Operator and sees herself becoming a Hub Supervisor with a salary of Rs. 18,000 per month in 6 months and handling a team of 4-5 people. She wants to stay in the same sector and see herself grow.

Rajesh, a graduate from Deoghar district in Jharkhand belongs to a family of 10 members solely dependent on farming and carpentry. With a fascination towards Marketing, he joined a 3 months Sales Management course at DDU-GKY and bagged a job at Eureka Forbes, Ranchi in October 2015 as a Sales Executive at a starting salary of Rs. 8,500 per month. He recently got confirmed, having sold 46 units of Aquaguard since his joining and is now drawing a monthly salary of Rs. 12,000 per month. He is now planning to purchase a motorbike through his organisation for around Rs. 60,000. Every month he keeps Rs. 5,000 for his expenses and sends the rest home. Staying true to his profession, he makes a sales pitch when asked what he plans to buy a Samsung mobile phone only “Jaise Eureka Forbes Aquaguard ka service centre har jagah hota hai, vaise hi Samsung ka service centre centre har jagah milta hai. Toh koi bhi kharabi hogi toh aasani se theek ho jayega. Humare Aquaguard ka service centre har 5 kms pe hai, baaki kissi water purifier ka nahi hai. Sirf kareedne se kuch nahi hota, benefit milna chahiye (Just like Eureka Forbes has their service centre everywhere, Samsung also has the same. Therefore it will be easier to get the phone repaired if required. Our Aquaguard service centre is found every 5 Kms unlike other water purifiers. You should get some benefit from a purchase)”.

Atul, a BA pass unemployed youth from Hardoi District in Uttar Pradesh has tried his hands at various places. He instantly got enrolled and is now working with BCL Securities in New Delhi and earns Rs. 15,000/- per month with company provided accommodation.
