Saturday Night Show

Do not miss the Fireworks display for Can-ada Day this Saturday night at midnight. The Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley will be firing them off from the usual posi-tion below the arena so the beautiful col-ours will be out over the lake. There will be hundreds of boats lit up on the lake at the same time so it becomes a very visual (and loud) experience. This is one of my favourite events of the year. That is why I am happy to donate to the coin boxes at the grocery store every time I stop in. If you can, please make a donation to the Kinsmen Club to keep this show going every year.

Riddliculous

Words that begin with the letter ‘J’. Needed to change a flat tire. The green-eyed monster. Small sail at front of boat. Large Boy Scout gathering. Olympic spear for throwing. See page 8.

Soup and a Bun

The last Friday of the month (June 29) brings the Edgewater Soup and a Bun luncheon put on by the seniors at the Edgewater Legion. It is a great deal for a fantastic meal that includes a huge sense of community. This will be the last one until September as even the soup ladies need a summer holi-day for some relaxation.

Siblings

Sure, Albert Einstein was a genius, but his brother Frank was a monster.

Steak Sandwich

That is this Friday’s meal at the Invermere Legion. Steak sandwich with side dishes. It will be another one of those great meals. Dinner is at 6:30 pm every Friday with meat and 50/50 draws happening at the same time. Also make sure you visit their market on Saturdays. It is located right in front of the Legion from 9 am to 1 pm.

Canada Day Tunes

Radium is hosting a special Music and Market on Main this Sunday, July 1 from 7 to 9 pm. Local hot shots ‘Marty and Eli’ will be rocking, rolling and more on Canada Day for our enjoyment. Check it out, you will not be disappointed.

Robservations

The community based around the Colum-bia Valley is incredible. Yes there are a few smaller communities but everyone still knows and often helps each other. I have really missed it. I am very blessed to be part of this valley. There are so many things that I love about the people and the area that it is hard to describe them all. Of course, having The Valley Peak puts me in touch with a lot of you and you all have to read (well don’t ‘have’ to I guess) about my thoughts, feelings and experi-ences. Including my health stuff. I have been trying to get out into the com-munity as much as possible these couple weeks since I arrived home. I love how many folks will come up and say ‘Hi’ and ‘How are you feeling?’ People actually care (or give that impression anyways). It does help to have a handsome basset hound along with me. Watson has become quite recognizable around the valley. It is funny how many folks get excited to meet the ‘infamous’ writer of the Waddle. So thanks to everyone with a huge heart in this valley who have given me a hug, fed me, assisted me and more. Keep sharing your love with all the people around you and keep this valley amazing.

Red & White Party

Copper City Saloon will be celebrating Canada’s birthday with a red & white party on Saturday, June 30. There’s no cover, with prizes for the best costumed Canadi-an, free bar swag plus pizza and cham-pagne at midnight. DJ Fastlife takes over at 10pm. Bring your two pieces of ID to prove you’re 19+, so you don’t miss out on the fun. While you’re there, watch for the sign-up sheet for the Monday pool tournament, which takes place every week at 7:30 pm.

Live at the Horse

Check out the Open Mic on Monday Night Live at the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radi-um on July 2. The musicians are very tal-ented and very welcoming. It is always great to see some newcomers out display-ing their stuff. The food is great, the atmosphere is out-standing and the music is enthralling. Get out on a Monday and enjoy your evening.

Watson’s Waddle

Who even reads an article ‘written’ by a hound dog? Well obviously you do and I appreciate that. I also hope that you share it with (as in read it to) your pets as I am sure they could learn a thing or two from my infinite wisdom. They say hound dogs are wise beyond their ears. We visited the vet last week. Rob was get-ting worried about a couple of things and well, I am not getting any younger. As it turns out, most of my issues are relat-ed to the stress of having Rob sick. He goes away lots, leaving me worried about being abandoned. I have a great dog walk-er (Kootenay Kritters) and she does an excellent job (and loves me to pieces) but I still get worried when I am not with my guy, The vet gave me a good going over and figures I am in good shape for my age, breed and background. I have a bit of time left in me yet. It will be interesting to see if I can outlast Rob and his myeloma busi-ness. It will be a traumatic finish either way.

Kidney Failure

So here I am, midnight, preparing to do another dialysis exchange before retiring. It will be another night of interrupted sleep, leading to another long day tomorrow. But that is my own issue, related to the placement of my drain tube and there is not much that can be done other than an-other surgery. I really dislike surgeries and I am a bit frustrated that this one was not done correctly the first time. Beyond that working, I will have an option to go on home hemodialysis. That will in-volve leaving for three weeks of training in Trail, not really my ideal situation. I don’t want to be away from the valley and my friends. So this kidney failure adventure is turning out to be a lot less glorious than I had hoped. My dream to get back to the valley to live a ‘normal’ life is proving to be a tough challenge that will require some more work to succeed. And it is a pretty solo challenge as far as the dialysis proce-dures. They must be done.

Side Effects

It has been good for me to write openly about what is going on with my health con-cerns and stuff. I am glad that I have been able to describe the way things have been affecting me. It has been a fairly easy topic to write about knowing that lots of folks could gain from it. But I have not talked much about the emo-tional side effects. My days consist of a lot of folks telling me that I look good but it is a bit of work to just get out the door. It is a frustrating thing. When I do bump into a close friend for the first time since my diagnosis, it can be a very emotional moment. But the worst is sitting alone and thinking about it all. Yeah I may be positive out there but this is still kicking the crap out of me. Negative thoughts and outcomes can thrive some-times. I have to thank God for Watson in my life with all this. The poor hound has watched me cry and been there for me many, many times. His ears are great tissue substi-tutes.

The first show will be Wonder Woman, showing at Pothole Park at dusk. There will be a concession at hand for treats. Please bring chairs, blankets, bug spray and weather suitable clothing. And please clean up after yourself before you leave. It is a beautiful park.

My Progress

Just a short little note to celebrate that after this week I will only have 12 more hits of chemo to complete my original ‘protocol’ (they love that word). They have been very vague on what happens after that. I am sure that someone will want to pump a ‘maintenance’ drug into me. I have to admit that the chemo effects have been accumulating as time goes on. I try to believe that they are not affecting me too much, but it is definitely there. Some days I just don’t feel like doing anything.

Alternative Treatments

Part of my journey through this cancer adven-ture has been partnered with Pure North S’En-ergy, an alternative health program base out of Calgary. They really promote healthy lifestyle and eating habits but also the use of supple-ments of vitamin D. As Canadians we do not get enough sun and therefore we don’t get enough vitamin D in our bodies. They also believe that the old metal fillings in our mouths can cause chronic inflammation which stresses our immune systems. Anyways, they have been an incredible sup-port for me on this journey. A special thanks goes to Allan Markin for his involvement in S’Energy and getting me started with all of that.

Strawberries

Here’s the cool thing about strawberries: their taste changes through the summer. In June you get your jolt of tangy sweetness, while by August the flavour is more jam-like and rich. See for yourself: go U-Pick at Saunders Fami-ly Farm now, and then go again later in the summer. Or reserve flats at different times of the harvest season. U-Pick is open from 9 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday at this great family farm on the Dell Road in Windermere, or call 342-9283 for or-ders. Nothing says summer like sun-ripened strawberries.

Darkness

The Thrifty Reporter

Invermere is such a great senior's community and I really appreciate this as I am getting closer to that 65+ age. Quite a few stores have a senior’s day, including the Invermere Thrift Store. You need to be over 65 to participate in this shopping experience. This gives people with scooters, wheelchairs, canes or walkers a chance to explore the store without the traffic of regular hours. It is held the first Wednesday of each month. This makes the next Seniors’ Shopping Day on July 4th, 2 to 4 pm. Remember you must be 65 or over! And don’t worry if you are under 65 as the store will be open on Thursday at 10 am for its regular shopping hours.

This Thursday, July 5 is the first evening of ‘Sun, Sand & Sport’ Thursdays hosted by the District of Invermere. These events run every Thursday from 5 to 8 pm at the Kins-men Beach. This week’s event is ‘Campfire Night’. I am not sure what that entails but I know I love nearly everything about a campfire, includ-ing the tasty snacks that are toasted by the flames.

Eric, reporting for ICAN Rescue and Adop-tion Facility. This wonderful place isn’t pos-sible without a bunch of dedicated animal loving directors and volunteers! Mountain Al Fresco Dinner

Menu options have been announced for Mountain Al Fresco, our annual pop-up picnic at a secret location where all guests wear only white. Get your $25 ticket, then choose whether to bring your own picnic or pre-order a three-course meal through the event web-site from Hopkin’s Harvest, Cafe Allium or Birchwood. It is on Saturday, July 7, from 6 to 11 pm, with live music and dancing. Go online or call 342-9281 for more information.

Where I Was

I am sure it was an easy guess this week. A great fireworks display for Canada Day is coming up this Saturday night at mid-night thanks to the Kinsmen and everyone who has donated.

Wearable Tech Workshop

I told my Silicon Valley buddy we’re about to have a “wearable tech” workshop at the CV Centre, and he was wowed that our local MakerSpace group was offering such a thing. What is “wearable tech”? Sign up for this Sunday, July 15 workshop, which runs from noon to 5 pm at the Columbia Valley Centre and you’ll get hands-on instruction and help adding StitchKit computer tech-nology to your choice of clothing or appar-el. It will be fascinating. Light up your favourite jersey or Christmas sweater. You can even add sound effects. Sign up for the $60 workshop online at www.cvmakerspace.ca or call 270-0689 for more info.

Exercise

“Hey Sue. Would you like to go for a nice walk?” “Yes, that would be wonderful.” “Great. Can you pick me up a six-pack please?”

Lake Enid Picnic

Wildsight is hosting a potluck picnic at Lake Enid to celebrate its volunteers and members on Thursday, June 28, from 5 to 7 pm. Everyone is welcome. Bring something for the table to share (if you can), as well as your plate and cutlery, bathing suit and comfortable chair. There will be a BBQ on site if you feel like grilling. Wildsight is a non-profit group that sup-ports the conservation of wild spaces and improved relationships with nature. In oth-er words: they’re a great group of people to share a meal with.

A View Worth Seeing

What’s the point of a great view if your windows are smudged and dirty? The team at Swift Clean can change the whole feel of your house by washing your windows. Give them a call at 409-4002 and start seeing the mountains again. You won’t believe the difference clean windows can make.

Live at the Whitehouse

Check out local rockers, ‘Valley Forged’ this weekend at the Whitehouse pub in Windermere. They will be playing Friday night, Saturday night and also a matinee during the afternoon on Saturday. You can also enjoy karaoke on Sunday, July 1. Happy Canada weekend.

Slow Speeder

“You are travelling pretty fast,” said the officer. “I know. I’m trying to keep up with traffic.” “There is no other traffic.” “That’s how far behind I am.”

Young Hearts Triathlon

You know you live in an athletic community when there’s a triathlon for ages 4-15. The Young Hearts Triathlon takes place on Saturday, July 7 at Kinsmen Beach and around Fort Point. While awards will be presented and times recorded, the event’s priorities are fun and safety, with parents able to help their 4-7 year olds through the swim, run and bike portions. Registration opens on Friday, July 6 from 5 to 7:30 pm at Copper Point Resort, and at 7 am before the event. Check out the web-site or call 342-3373 for details.

Crocs: the Ideal Footwear?

My co-writer Heather has worn her crocs on a glacier, on a 2-month motorhome road trip, and always at the beach and when camping. She says they are the ideal summer footwear. If you’re up for the summer croc challenge, you’ll be happy to know that Columbia Val-ley Trading Company has a wide selection of crocs available, in all sizes, as well as hiking shoes and other options.

Take Advantage

For the past few years I have been privi-leged and blessed to be out there as a Fire Warden That meant that I was spending a lot of time in the back country, enjoying the beautiful places in the area. This year has been different due to health

issues. I am not quite there yet as I still get pretty fatigued. I realize that I do not take advantage of where I live. When I was a tourist here I was doing so many hikes, swims, camping and more. I was out there. Now I drive by vehicles at gorgeous sites without taking the time to stop and go for a quick wander in. I think I have too much to do (like write this mess) and forget why I actually live in this valley. Get out there and take advantage of where we are. Folks come from all around the world to check out the beauty of our valley so make sure that you are also enjoying it.

Final Note

Just a quick reminder to not take life too seriously. Don’t worry about other folk’s business, just look for joy and fun in your own life. Happy Canada Day.
