Activity: Making spectroscope

Materials needed for home made spectroscope:

Empty kitchen tissue paper roll

Paper cutter/scissor

Old CD

Small piece of card sheet

Tape

Colored paper

Steps to make spectroscope:

Paste the colored paper on the empty tissue roll.

Use a craft knife (an adult should do this) to cut a thin slit at a

45° angle toward the bottom of the cardboard tube.

Directly across from the slit, make a small peephole or viewing hole

using your craft knife (another step for an adult).

Page 12: d`c:qfd:adilt:cdpbogmqglk:ly:qfd:qvmdp:ly:j`qdog`ip:`kc ...€¦ · :jd :1111111111111111111111:::: i`pp ' :(d`c:qfd:adilt:cdpbogmqglk:ly:qfd:qvmdp:ly:j`qdog`ip:`kc: lahdbq:gp:qo`kpm`odkq

Trace one end of your paper towel roll onto your small scrap of

cardboard or cardstock. Cut it out.

Cut a straight slit right across the center of your cardboard circle.

Tape the circle to the top of your spectroscope.

Insert the CD into your 45° angled slit with the shiny side facing up.

Start by taking your spectroscope outside. Point the top slit up at the

sky (NOT directly at the sun). Look through the peephole. You will

see a rainbow inside!

Bring your spectroscope along with your summer break homework and

submit it to your teacher.

Learning Material

Natural material: The materials which occur in nature and used.

Man-made material: The materials obtained from nature material

through chemical processes.

Soluble materials: The material that dissolves in water are called soluble

material.

Insoluble materials: The material that does not dissolve in water is called

insoluble materials.

Reversible change: The changes which can be turned back to get original

substance.

Irreversible change: The changes which cannot be turned back to get

original substance.

Transparent material: It allows all light to pass through them. This means

that we can clearly see through them.

Translucent material: It allows some light to pass through them. This

means we can partially see through them.

Opaque material: It does not allow any light to pass through them. This

means that we cannot see through them at all.

Solid: The solid particles are packed closely together. It has definite shape

and volume.

Liquid: A liquid particles are separated from each other. It takes the shape

of its container.

Gas: A particles of gas are far away from each other. They does not have

a definite shape and volume.
