Age Guidelines For Summer Programs:

Our librarians have planned a variety of activities for children of all ages. Each event

is carefully designed with a particular age

group in mind. Please observe age requirements listed.

Sometimes events beyond our control result in date changes

or event cancellations.

Program registered patrons who supply a phone or e-mail address at sign-up will be notified of any

changes as they may occur. Patrons are encouraged to register by phone 315-446-3578, or via our

For Kids

Fizz! Boom! Read! @ the DCL! Monday, June 30 - Monday, August 18

Experiment with reading this summer! You’re encouraged to read (or listen to) the books you want. Record your reading adventures in your very own Scientist’s Log! Then visit the Library and share the stories you've read with a librarian. A prize will be given out each week to encourage you to explore the world of books.

Children, in preschool through Grade 5, can register at any time during the program’s run.

MISS JENNY CHALLENGES YOU!

8 weeks, 5,000 books.

Can it be done? If participants of the Children’s Summer Reading program, “Fizz! Boom! READ!”, read a combined total of 5,000 books before Monday, August 18, Miss Jenny will voluntarily dye her hair. What color will it be? You get to choose!

Kick-Off Party Monday, June 30 @ 2:00-4:00 pm Summer reading begins with crafts, face painting, and more! Parents can learn about our Summer Reading Program, which encourages children to read. Chil-dren in preschool through 5th Grade can register for our Children’s Summer Reading Program.

End of Summer Party Monday, August 18 @ 2:00-4:00 pm For children in preschool through 5th Grade who are registered for our Summer Reading Program at the DCL! Find out if DCL summer readers reached this year’s goal.

For the Littlest Patrons

Little Sparks @ the DCL! July - August

For ages birth to 5 years old. The Little Sparks Summer Reading Program helps parents and children build important early literacy skills. Stop by the Library to register and pick up an activity sheet to share with your child. Complete the activities on the sheet and bring it back to the

Library and receive a prize. This program runs for the months of July and August. Participate for one or both months.

For Teens

Spark a Reaction & Make A Summer @ Your Library

Monday, June 30 - Monday, August 18

For grades 6 & up. Teens, discover the summer reading program that has been upgraded to include more than just read-ing. Teens will have the opportunity to earn “badges” by completing tasks such as creating a meal, writing a poem, composing a song, attending a library program, and many more. The DCL will award prizes for the most badges earned as well as the most creative project. Teens may still partici-pate in the traditional reading club as well.

Join Donna Butterfield for this interactive music and movement show. Enjoy stories with Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses, and sing and dance, play in-struments, and more! There’ll be face-painting, too!

Soda Bottle Science Show Thursday, August 7 @ 6:30pm

Award-winning author and scientist Steve “The Dirtmeister” Tomecek presents science experiments that go fizz, boom and pop! These safe and fun ex-periments will entertain your kids. Recommended for Grades K and up!

Moreland the Magician Thursday, August 14 @ 6:30pm

“Professor Dave”, aka Moreland, is looking to make the discovery of a life- time. Join him as he fumbles his way through several experiments that blend magic, puppetry, mystery, and audience participation. Recommended for Grades Pre-K and up!

DCL Crafts @ Jamesville Beach Geared for ages 5 - 10!

Looking for something different to do this summer? Join the Library crew at Jamesville Beach and make some fun crafts that you’ll simply love!

DeWitt Community Library will be offering awesome crafts to beachgoers at Jamesville Beach Park. Children’s Librarian Jennifer Burke and Para-

librarian for Children’s Services Kelly Sickler will be hosting four fun ses-sions for ages 5-10. Come for one or all four! The DCL will provide all supplies, except for t-shirts to dye. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parking fees are not included.

In this hands-on program, kids become scientists and

The Town of DeWitt Police Department shows students

some practical applications of everyday science. A brief history of the use of physical evidence in law enforce-

ment is followed by demonstrations/examples of how science is used in criminal investigations.

The MOST: Fizz Boom Amaze Thursday, July 31 @ 2:00 pm

Recommended for all ages! Ever wondered why Pop Rocks pop and soda goes fizz? The

MOST brings you an exciting selection of experiments that fizz, boom and pop! You will be amazed, and dazzled as you

learn the science behind them. This 45 minute interactive show is for people of all ages and designed to encourage

The Amazing Honeybee Tuesday, July 15 @ 1:00 pm For ages 6 & up.

Honeybees are incredible creatures. Join

hobby beekeeper and DCL librarian Emily Wormuth for a hands-on discussion about how bees make honey, how

beekeepers take it out of the hive, and what you can do to protect these amazing creatures. She’ll bring some of

her honey for you to taste, and you’ll have the chance to try on a beekeeper’s suit. Registration Required.

Do you know what to look for in the summer

sky? Join us for a hands-on program as local amateur astronomer Dave Wormuth discusses the skies, tele-

scopes and astronomy websites. If weather permits, we’ll go outside and look at the sun through a special

crafts, and snacks. Bring your lunch and

LEGO Block Party Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30pm For all ages! Do you like Lego? Bring your

building skills to the library for a Lego party

featuring games, food and, of course, plenty of building. You can use the library’s Legos to build a

masterpiece that we’ll put on display for everyone in the library and the mall to admire throughout the summer.

Spa Day Thursday, July 17 at 2:00pm For ages 8-16. Relax at the library

and make your own homemade spa products.


Pete the Cat Party Friday, July 25 at 11:00am For ages 2-7. Pete the Cat is just about the coolest cat around. Join us for a party based on

killed in the library and why. Follow the clues and test your detective wits.

Digital Readers’ Theatre Saturday, July 26 @ 1:30 - 3:30 pm

For ages 8 - 16. Take on the role of pop-ular book characters in the DCL’s Digital Read-ers’ Theatre. Read the script, play a part, and have your voice recorded live. Learn about digi-tal audio recording, performance, and podcasting as you create your informally staged production of a popular book or two.

Each performance will be recorded and a free CD will be made available for all to keep.

Readers’ Theatre promotes reading confidence and fluency in a fun, creative, and non-threatening environment.

Cheryl Pula returns to the DCL for more exciting “moments in history” programs. She previously presented “Crime

Spree,” a look at famous unsolved mysteries about Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh Kidnapping, and Black Dahlia, and “Battle Royale” about turning points in the Revolutionary, Civil, and Second World Wars.

Web? Helpful online and software tools exist for search-ing names, and locating vital records, for tracing one’s

roots, or creating a family tree.

About the Speaker: Holly Sammons, MLS is Head of the Genealogy and History Department at the Central Library. Holly is on the board of the Central New York Genealogical Society, member of the NEHGS and NGS and has 15 years of experience researching genealogy.


The Making of a Museum

Discover an Erie Canal treasure! Discover the unearthing and preserving of one of New

York State’s most fascinating canal historic sites. Marvel at the excavation, preservation, and restoration of the

three bay dry dock complex where canal boats were built and repaired, and the reconstruction of the blacksmith

shop, sawmill, and mule stable.

Much like a traditional face-to-face book club, The Cozy Chair discussions will offer more opportunities for everyone to share and chat about our favorite books. There are 2 fiction adult book clubs, 2 nonfiction adult book clubs, and even a book club for kids!

The clubs will run from June 30 through August 22, 2014, with weekly posts during this period. Extra copies of the books are available at the DCL for participants.

We hope to see you online, commenting, mingling, and shar-ing your reading experiences with fellow booklovers.

Join us at the Library for an in-person session on Friday, June 20 at 11:00 am, which will introduce you to the Cozy Chair and how it works. Learn how to access and participate in the DCL’s online book groups.

Community Art Project Saturday, July 12 | 11:00 am to 4:30 pm

Help create a symbolic tree painting. After a brief tutorial,

participants will work with the artist one-on-one for ap-prox. 20 minutes. The canvas will rotate among area li-

braries and upwards of 50 people may be participating in
