A Claremont couple unknowingly drove around with a $1million winning Powerball ticket in the glove box of their carfor more than seven months.
It wasn't until November 24 when Kristi Himle wassearching for her registration information in her car that shecame across two unchecked Powerball tickets from the April21, 2012 drawing. "I figured they weren't even good any-more but I brought them inside for Dennie [her husband] tocheck," she explained.
When Dennie had the tickets scanned at a retailer later thatday, he got a message that one of the tickets was worth morethan $30,000 and must be redeemed at Lottery headquarters.Unaware of the exact prize amount, he went back home andgot on the computer to check the Lottery's website and dis-covered that the couple won $1 million! "We were both inshock," said Dennie.
The couple arrived at the Lottery's headquarters inRoseville on November 30 to claim the prize.
Kwik Trip, located at 1112 Second Ave. N.W. in Faribault, sold the winning ticket. The winning numbers drawn onApril 21, 2012 were 6-8-20-42-51 and the Powerball was 16.

Recently the Minnesota RestaurantAssociation presented 2012 awards and theHubbell House was selected as the MinnesotaRestaurant of the Year. Hubbell House ownerDon Pappas and several employees attendedthe awards ceremony November 19 at theSaint Paul Hotel.
Over the years the Hubbell House has beenbestowed with several awards. Don Pappassaid being selected the Minnesota Restaurantof the Year is the biggest honor they have everreceived. He also said it was only fitting eightstaff members could attend because there areso many people at the restaurant who madethe honor possible. “I am proud of the awardand our staff,” said Don.
The Restaurant of the Year recognizes acompany that provides outstanding customerservice and distinguishes itself as a leader inthe industry and community. The HubbellHouse is one of Minnesota’s oldest restau-rants, established in 1854 as an important stopbetween Winona and St. Peter, then the aspir-ing state capitol.
First operated as an inn, famous guestsinclude Horace Greeley, Alexander Ramseyand Ulysses Grant. In 1946 Paul Pappas laidhis eyes on the old limestone structure andknew he had found the location of his dreamrestaurant. Paul and Irene Pappas expandedthe Hubbell House from one dining room for60 customers to six dining rooms that can seatover 300 guests.
Designated a national historic site, theHubbell House continues to host famousguests, from Dwight Eisenhower to RoyRogers to Mickey Mantle to the MinnesotaVikings, who train in Mankato.
Paul passed away in 1996, just a few daysbefore celebrating his 50th year of ownership.
Son Don Pappas represented the family inaccepting the award. He introduced eightemployees, noting their years of service andhow each has contributed to the success of therestaurant. Waitress Jan Smith drew the mostapplause when Don said she has worked at therestaurant since 1947. "I really enjoy it andwould miss all the people I get to see," saidJan. Four other staff members have at least 30years experience. General manager DougKracht (43 years) and chef Jary Gardner (38years) have a combined 81 years experiencebetween them and waiter Dan Driver andhostess Ann Driver have 30 years each.“These are the people who have made theHubbell House,” said Pappas.
Doug Kracht said Paul Pappas was alwaysa great guy to work for and to be around thislong he said, “You have to like the businessand the people you work with”. We have triedto keep pace with the trends and I think wehave done that,” added Kracht.
The Hubbell House is the first southeastMinnesota restaurant to receive theRestaurant of the Year honor. A majority ofthe honors have gone to restaurants in theTwin Cities metro area.
Attending the Minnesota Restaurant Association 2012 awards ceremo-ny representing the Hubbell House were: Seated Karri Burns, Jan Smithwho has waitressed at the Hubbell House since 1947, and HeatherSwygman, standing: Scott Pappas, Ann Driver, Don Pappas, JaryGardner, Doug Kracht, Dan Driver and Dick Jensch.

Hubbell House owner DonPappas introduces employeeJan Smith who has been onthe wait staff since 1947. Shereceived the most applausewhen introduced at theMinnesota RestaurantAssociation banquet wherethe Hubbell House wasselected by peers as the2012 Restaurant of the Year.
Over the past 65 years the Hubbell House has had several celebritiesdine at the restaurant. One of them was former Los Angeles Dodgers ownerPeter O’Malley who typically ate at the Hubbell House when he was inRochester for check-ups at Mayo.
The Hubbell House was adream come true for Paul Pappasin 1947. Paul died only a coupleweeks prior to the 50th anniver-sary celebration of the restaurant.
Mantorville Chamber of Commerce • Kasson Chamber of Commerce
Congratulationsto Don Pappas and the Hubbell House staff for being selected the 2012 Minnesota Restaurant of the Yearby the Minnesota Restaurant Association. The Hubbell House is a valuable asset to Kasson-Mantorvilleand we are fortunate to have had such a fine restaurant here for almost 65 years.

You ask the Senior questionWe find the Savvy answer
How to Find a Lost PensionDear Savvy Senior,How does one go about tracking down a lost pen-
sion? About 35 years ago, I worked at a manufacturingcompany for a few years that offered employee pen-sions, and I want to find out if I’m eligible for anymoney now that I’m about to retire.
Searching StevenDear Steven,Losing track of a small pension from years ago is actual-
ly quite common, especially if you’ve have had a lot of jobsthroughout your working life. To help you locate a lost pen-sion, here are the steps to take along with some freeresources that can help you search if your previousemployer has gone out of business, changed names ormerged with another firm.
Pension ProofIf you think you have a pension from a previous employ-
er, and the company is still in business, your first step is tocall their human resources department and ask them togive you the contact information of the pension planadministrator. Then you’ll need to contact them to find outhow much your pension is worth and how to claim it.
Depending on how complete the plan administrator’srecords are, you may need to show proof that you onceworked for the company and that you are pension eligible.
Your old income tax returns and W-2 forms from theyears you worked at the company will help you here. If youhaven’t saved your old tax returns from these years, youcan get a copy of your earnings record from the SocialSecurity Administration, which will show how much youwere paid each calendar year by each employer.
Call 800-772-1213 and ask them to mail you the“Request for Social Security Earnings Information” formSSA-7050, or you can download it atwww.ssa.gov/online/ssa-7050.pdf. You’ll pay a small fee forthe report, depending on the number of years of data yourequest.
Some other old forms that can help you prove eligibilityare your Summary Plan Descriptions (SPD) that you shouldhave received from your employer when you worked there,or any individual benefit statements.
Check the PBGCIf you can’t find your former employer because it went
out of business, or, if the company ended its pension plan, you need to check the Pension Benefit GuarantyCorporation’s (PBGC) online pension search directory atsearch.pbgc.gov/mp/mp.aspx. Or, you can call 800-400-7242 and get help over the phone.
The PBGC is a federal agency that guarantees pensionsof bankrupt companies. The agency also maintains infor-mation on any pension plan that has been terminated, evenif the company is still in business.
The PBGC, however, does not cover or have informationon lost pensions that are still active, nor will they help youlocate lost 401(k) plans.
