Finishing touches are being put on a '63 Chevy being restored at West ConcordCollision & Restoration.
Tim Gangl finds new niche in West Concord businessTim Gangl started Minnesota Hot Rod Hardware and the business has grown to include
West Concord Collision & Restoration. Last winter, which was hardly a typical Minnesota winter, business slowed yet Tim was
able to find a niche that generated new business. He is now converting sleeper semi-trucks intoday haulers.
The process involves shortening up the cab by taking out the sleeper and shortening the boxby about six feet. Shortening up the box actually increases the value of the trailer, said Gangl.
One of Tim's first customers had semi trucks converted to day haulers so he could haulsugar beets in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Farmers around here also use the converted semitrucks for hauling grain. He has converted 50 of them and business has taken off. "It has beengood for us and it fits in with what we do here," said Tim. He has done every model fromPeterbilt to Kenworth, International and Freightliner.
Three years ago Tim constructed a new building just off Highway 56 in West Concord andincorporated collision and restoration work to complement Minnesota Hot Rod Hardware.
What Tim specialized in was selling after market parts for street rod and muscle cars. Theparts, to name a few, include updated front and rear suspensions, cruise, air, radiators, mirrors, rims and mounts used to put in new engines and transmissions. Tim sells the after market partsall over the country and even has regular customers around the world.
When Tim built the new 60' x 80' building and renamed the business he incorporated clas-sic car restoration and collision correction on today's models. Expanding the business provedto be a good move. As the economy slowed so did the car restoration business because it is a"luxury" the owner can put off.
Collision repair was a good option that complemented the restoration business and broughtnew business. Collision work was also beneficial in that it gave his staff a change of pace.Restoration can be very tedious and slow. "Doing conventional repairs gives them a break andthey are more energized when going back to a car or truck being restored," said Tim.
Tim admits it was a good business decision to take on the conventional auto and truck col-lision correction and most recently the semi-truck conversion work. However, he insists thereis still that special attraction to a hot rod or muscle car. He still remembers when he was ayoung boy fixing up cars in his parent’s back yard.
This fall West Concord Collision & Restoration will be hosting a car show open houseacross the road from his business in a lot owned by Boe Auto Center. The show attracts some300 classic street rods and muscle cars for the day. The event was held at the fairgrounds inKasson and last year was the first time it was in West Concord. Tim said the event was suc-cessful and drew people to the community.
Tim Gangl stands by a cab that has had the sleeper removed. Employees are in theprocess of converting the truck into a day hauler.
Pictured is a semi-truckafter being converted froma sleeper to a day cabhauler.
