Healthy Grandparents Inspire Healthy Grandchildren Try making it a game. Is there a local 5k going on? Sign up and ask your grandchild to help you complete the journey. Empower them to be your coach. It gets them active, gives them a sense of pride in accomplishment, and you are both getting active all in the same time.

Buy a bicycle and take your grandkids for a leisurely ride. If that is not enough motivation for them, give them an extra incentive. Tell them that the first person to make it to the goal line gets to pick the next day’s activity...or some such reward they will enjoy. If you are already active and have regularly scheduled workouts, you want

to be able to incorporate your grandchildren into these schedules so that you do not get off track. The easiest way to do that is to have a workout routine your grandchildren will enjoy. That means you may need to change up your routine in order to appeal to them. Being flexible in how you exercise will be your greatest benefit.

D o you have the pleasure of caring for your grandkids during the summer? Are you already an

active adult with a regular workout routine? Then you might be starting to plan your summer activities with your grandkids but are wondering when you will have time to work out. The simplest answer is to include your grandchildren in your workout routine. How can you do that and get them out from in front of their video games or the television? How can you get active with your grandkids? Consider a senior playground. What is that, you ask? It is an outdoor playground specifically geared for older adults. However, many are, in fact, multigenerational, allowing the grandparents to get active with their grandchildren. There are cardiovascular and strength-training activities that are more fun than work. And when you make work fun, it’s not work anymore. Why would a grandparent want to be active? There are two immediate answers. The first is that most want to be around 20 years from now to watch their grandchildren graduate from high school, college, get married, and begin their own families. The best way to do that is to stay healthy. The other reason to be active is that if you actually provide daycare, you want to be able to keep up with them, especially the overactive toddler who loves to be everywhere and anywhere simultaneously. But what if your grandkids do not want to get out and exercise? How do you get them out from in front of that video game console? One Finnish study that evaluated 40 people ages 65 to 81 that had access to a senior playground found that that after three months of regular use, seniors saw significant gains in balance, speed and coordination.

5 Ways to Get Better Sleep

A good night’s sleep will help you in every aspect of

your life. Most importantly, it will help you become

healthier. But how do you get a good night’s sleep?

Consider these five suggestions:

1. Intense exercise releases adrenaline, which inhibits

your sleep. Therefore, exercising in the morning can

offer better sleep at night.

2. This next suggestion may not get many cheers, but

you should have your last caffeinated beverage no

later than six hours before bedtime. That includes

coffee, hot cocoa, soda, etc.

3. Along with ceasing caffeine intake prior to bedtime,

you should stop eating at least three hours before

bedtime. Sleeping on a full stomach not only causes

physical discomfort, it also leads to increased reflux

and GERD, which will wake you up at night.

4. Put your phone and tablet away. The lighted

displays are counterproductive to melatonin

production, and you need melatonin for a good night’s

sleep.

5. Make a schedule and stick to it. You might be

surprised at how much better your sleep is once you

have trained your body that from X o’clock to X

o’clock is your sleep time.

Dear Clients and Friends,

Soon the kids will be finished with school for the year. What are their summer plans? How will they be getting their much-needed exercise?

When I was a kid, my summers were spent playing outdoors.

My siblings, friends and I were active—swimming, playing basketball, riding our bikes, having fun on the school playground—from morning until sunset. We wanted the days to last as long as possible, until our

mothers would call us in to get a bath & go to bed. The next day, we’d do it all over again.

The majority of today’s youth spend their free time indoors, sedentary, in front of the TV, computer, phone or video games. It’s sad, really, that this generation will see the most disease...that could have been prevented simply by playing outdoors: Heart disease,

diabetes, obesity, allergies, and a lack of social skills (yes, this is a disease too.)

I urge you, parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, to get the kids you love moving this summer. It can be as simple as taking a walk or as involved as joining a summer sports league...anywhere in between is a beautiful thing. Not only will your children benefit from

the physical activity, but you will too.

And these active summers will create some of your child’s fondest memories...
