Day #11 09 June 2016. Got up and had breakfast at
a corner café just down the street from the hotel.
Then to the parking garage to the car for the trip
above, to the Brussels airport. Had to call the
parking garage phone number to find out how to get
out of the garage.
Got to the airport around 9a and
said farewell to the Opal Mokka.
2,461 km = 1,529 miles on this trip
Had a
sandwich and
a “farewell to
Belgium” beer
It’s the better part of
an hour getting from
Keflavik International
Airport to downtown
Reykjavik.
I guess we missed the more scenic parts of
Iceland. Wasn’t much to see on the 45 minute
bus ride.
Started looking a little more interesting closer to town.
Our lodging was on an
upper floor from GEYSIR
women’s clothing shop.
Quite appropriate
to take a selfie
when on an
Icelandic tiny
elevator.
Just a short walk
from our room
was the
Hallgrimskirkja,
the Lutheran
church that
stands 244’ high. The church is
named after the
Icelandic poet and
clergyman Hallgrím
ur Pétursson (1614–
1674). The
designer wanted it
to resemble
the trap
rocks, mountains
and glaciers of
Iceland's
landscape. It took
41 years to build.
1945-1986.
The statue of explorer Leif
Eriksson (c. 970 – c. 1020)
by Alexander Stirling
Calder in front of the
church predates its
construction. It was a gift
from the United States in
honor of the
1930 Alþingi Millennial
Festival, commemorating
the 1000th anniversary of
Iceland's parliament at Þin
gvellir in 930 AD.
Website says: The concert organ is
the largest in the country, and
organists worldwide take pleasure
in playing it and in recording in the
church. Inaugurated in December
1992, it was constructed by
Johannes Klais Organworks in
Bonn, Germany, and has four
manuals and a pedal, 72 stops and
5275 pipes. It is 15 m high and
weighs 25 tonnes. The largest
pipes are 10 m long.

This is where we had our official Icelandic beer on the patio and a
good meal. Everything in Iceland is EXPENSIVE!
Official Iceland
beer at 9:55pm
I’m sure there are some stunning vistas like this in
Iceland, but we didn’t see em.
Day #12, 10 June 2016 We got out early so we wouldn’t miss the
shuttle back to the airport for our 10:30ish am flight.
And before you know it we
were on the way back to
JFK in New York.
Celebrating the trip with
our last beer at JFK
airport. Had a couple
hours to kill before flight to
Austin

Again we thank our gracious wives for blessing our
guy trips. Costa Rica (country #30) is in store for
2017.
