HONOURED FOR WORK WITH THE RNLI
One of the firs tasks of our new Mayor, Cllr Carl Tebbutt, was an extremely pleasant one: to present the Gregory Cup to
TOM FREEMAN who was nominated by the public to be given this award by the Town Council in recognition of his services to our community: his voluntary selfless work for the RNLI.
Pictured here with Tom & the Mayor is Mike Gregory [RIGHT] representing the family from whom the cup takes its name. Among the accolades for Tom was one from Mike’s mother-in-law, one of our previous mayors, Joyce Taylor who wrote on how much Tom desreved the award, saying to him, “You are a true Hero! Thank you for all your years of dedicated service.”
A profile of Carl appears on page 5.

MYSTERY PHOTO FROM AROUND 1957
THE MAKING OF A MAYOR
Carl moved from Loughborough to Mablethorpe in 1975, & here he has set up two businesses first serving as a Town Councillor in 1989. For nine years he was Chair of the Carnival Committee. In 2012 he resigned from the Council frustrated by the lack of progress being made. Despite the way Mablethorpe had, in his words, “punched above our weight”, he witnessed the Council “constantly going over old matters & difficulty in getting decisions through.” What was needed, he is quoted as having said then, was “some foresight & investment into leisure facilities to give the place a kick start.”
This is exactly what is on the table now with the pledge
of major funding for the Station Sports Centre. And in the new Council Carl has a strong team behind him: fresh new faces, supported by the experience of the long serving councillors Bernard Dobbs & Janet Cook. Also alongside Carl will be his consort Cllr Helen Parkhurst & the new Deputy Mayor Cllr Colin Matthews.
Carl’s chosen charities will be the Meridale Youth Club & the Men’s Shed. For 25 years he has been active on the soccer scene as a team manager, a club chairman & a referee. Having moved to Sutton-on-Sea in 2004 (where his home overlooks the playing field) Carl is now active in promoting walking football with a growing number of older members of the community enjoying taking part each Tuesday evening.
Carl is very much looking forward to a busy mayoral year meeting many members of our community.
And if you have a feeling when you meet him that you have encountered him before, that’s because as a side-line Carl plays extras in adverts & TV shows… depicting both Criminals ~ & grandees.
Recently you might have spotted him in the acclaimed BBC costume drama “Victoria”. A M A Y O R

CONGRATULATIONS ON ELECTORAL SUCCESS
The Labour Party swept the board in the elections to the East Lindsey District Council on May 2nd.
Congratulations go to Graham Cullen, [LEFT] who was the councillor with the most votes in the whole of the District (989).
Re-elected with him was Tony Howard [BELOW LEFT] (848), & a new councillor, Claire Newman (720) [RIGHT].
We extend to each of them good wishes in shouldering the task of working for our whole community.
To contact one of those who represent Mablethorpe on the District & Town Councils, call in to the Coastal Centre on a Tuesday morning between 10am & noon.
Appointments at other times can be arranged.
One of the issues on councillors’ in-tray at the moment is a difficulty facing those relying on public transport.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT PROBLEMS
The new Stagecoach InterConnect bus time table is now in operation linking up the whole of the coastline with Mablethorpe in the middle. The 59 links us up with Skegness & the 51 links us with Grimsby. This has the advantage of our being able to go direct to the Louth Hospital & the Princess Diana Hospital in Grimsby. Both buses also go to the Ferryboat, the Seal Sanctuary & Golden Sands with a convenient stop at the Loewen Cinema. However, a stop at the North Sea Observatory means that the journey for those wishing to go direct to Skegness takes longer: while the useful link in Louth to Lincoln has gone: Instead of being able to catch the Lincoln bus as soon as the Mablethorpe bus arrives you now have to wait for an hour… And it can be an even longer wait when you return.
There is, nevertheless, still a way of arriving in Lincoln in time to have an hour or so’s shopping or to catch a train. This is facilitated by the Hunts 96X bus which leaves the stop by the Co-op at 8am getting to Spilsby via Sutton-on-Sea & Alford just over an hour later at 9-05. The 9-32am 56 InterConnect from Skegness then takes you to Lincoln getting in at 10-50am. Coming back you would have to leave Lincoln at 1pm to wait 45 minutes in Spilsby for the last 96A bus to Mablethorpe which leaves at 3-05pm arriving in Mablethorpe at 4-30pm. Otherwise it is a matter of catching the 4-20pm 56 from Lincoln to Skegness. It arrives in Skegness at 6-20pm in time to catch the last 6-35pm 59 bus which arrives in Mablethorpe at 7-47pm. All this is wonderful if you like looking at the Lincolnshire countryside… but not if you want to spend more time at your destination than you spend travelling! Representations are being made to our bus companies.
As this issue of TIDINGS is rolling off the press a new six-part series is starting on ITV. Shot in Boston (& also at locations nearer us) WILD BILL tells the story of a high-flying US cop Bill Hixon parachuted into Lincolnshire.
WILL BOSTON BECOME THE NEW
BROADCHURCH?
The top cop is appointed Chief Constable of the East Lincolnshire Police Force with the dual task of reducing the area’s soaring crime figures while making the cuts an austerity budget requires. He has a feisty 14 year-old daughter & he seems to have taken on the county’s problems to exorcise his own. Unimpressed by his US credentials & not keen on a Sheriff coming from across the Atlantic on a pilgrimage to clean up the town, the community forces Bill to question everything about himself leaving him asking whether it’s Boston that needs Bill, or Bill that needs Boston?
Bill [LEFT] is played by Rob Lowe (“West Wing” etc), while his Deputy [RIGHT], over-looked, presumably due to racial prejudice, is Nottingham’s Anjli Mohindra (“Dark Heart” & “Bodyguard”).
The Police & Crime Commissioner is Tony Pitts (“Line of Duty”), & the local journalist is Angela Griffin (“Coronation Street” & “Waterloo Road”).
The barrister & daughter of an aristocratic Lincolnshire family [RIGHT] with whom Hixon has the rather predictable affair, is Diana Rigg’s daughter Rachael Stirling (“The Bletchley Circle”, “Tipping the Velvet”, & “Snow White & the Huntsman”).
Over the next six weeks we may well be asking whether this the Boston we know? Or whether the problems that create the series’ plot-line are a little too close for comfort?!!
Here is a brand new bistro style venue open to the public 7 days a week.
With a relaxed bar, a lakeside terrace, & also a pet friendly eating area, it is committed to offering the best locally & ethically sourced seasonal dishes.

THE SAME PHOTO WITH DIFFERENT CAPTIONS ON THE FRONT PAGES OF NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS
95 year old Jack Quinn, who, with his wife Shirley, lives in Mablethorpe’s Regent Road, & is a former President of our branch of the Royal British Legion, caught the attention of the world media on the 75th anniversary of D-Day with this moving photo. As a Corporal in the Royal Marines he was involved in the construction of the “Mulberry harbours” [PICTURED BELOW] which historian & author Guy Walters has described as “a classic example of British ingenuity & inventiveness for my money right up there with the bouncing bomb & radar.” “We wondered what they were at first,
when we saw them.” said Jack. “‘What are they going to do with them?’ we asked & were told, ‘They are going to load men & vehicles on them.’ “We were surprised they towed them all that way. But the soldiers were glad to get in a lorry & drive off a Mulberry harbour instead of getting in a landing craft & getting wet through. Speed was the essence.” So indeed was the hard graft put in by so many like Jack. We can only echo the head-lines: THANK YOU TO OUR HEROES!
It’s well worth while to take the opportunity to visit this remarkable Victorian building:
Gayton Engine Pumping Station, Whichhouses machinery that has been used to pump flood water from the Marshes for well over 100 years. Here you can see in operation the 1933 two stroke diesel engine & Gwynnes pump … along with other exhibits on display in the station’s museum.
JUST THE PLACE FOR A FASCINATING EXPERIENCE ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON!
You can find the station easily. It’s set back on the south side of the main road between Mablethorpe & Louth at Theddlethorpe All Saints, Thacker Bank LN12 1PE. Dogs are welcome, there’s a picnic area & parking for the disabled & coaches. The visit along with the parking is entirely free of charge (though donations are welcome.)
The dates this year are the Sundays of 16th June, 21st July (when other engines will also be on display, & refreshments will be served), 18th August, plus the Heritage Week-end 14th & 15th September.

What do we do at Smartie Pants? We use it as a learning opportunity! The children started counting the drips & making tally charts to find out which bucket is filling up the fastest!

SMARTIE PANTS DAY NURSERY [in Ruskin Road]
tells how they rose to the challenge of our recent appalling weather…
So it’s cold, wet & miserable & we have leaks appearing everywhere:
Unfortunately, such was the weather it looked as though bigger buckets would be needed as well as more paper!
Unfortunately, such was the weather it looked as though bigger buckets would be needed as well as more paper!
Although we did get to jump & splash in some puddles for a short while we mostly did have to play indoors. So continuing our theme of physical development we created an indoor obstacle course [SEE PHOTO RIGHT!]. Lots of twisting, bending, stretching, balancing & using our whole bodies & minds to tackle the course!
And there were also great examples of initiative: using a cushion as an umbrella [LEFT]
And of OPTIMISM: Note the sun-glasses

JOKERS’ CORNER Eight kids were too many & the cost of rising prices was getting Fred down. He told his wife if they had any more kids he would go out of his mind with worry. A week later his wife announced that she was pregnant.
“That’s the end,” lamented Fred. He opened the drawer beneath his desk & pulled out a revolver & held it to his head.
“Stop,” cried his wife. “You’ll be killing an innocent man.”

MABLETHORPE
The internationally recognized Blue Flag status is awarded each June & Mablethorpe is one of the 68 UK beaches given the award this year.
To receive the award 33 criteria have to be met.
These include Environmental Education & Information (which may be displayed on a map), Environmental Management (including public toilets), Water Quality, & Safety & Services such as accessibility & the availability of drinking water, but in particular the patrol of the beach by lifeguards. Only four other beaches in the East Midlands received the award this year: the central beaches of Cleethorpes, Sutton-on-Sea, & Skegness, & Ingoldmells south.
