Prayer
Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts, not just to those who are close to us, but to all who cross our path; to all humanity.
Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.
Help us realize that this is the only way to transformation. The only way to true peace. Amen
Congratulations to Lachlan Butcher (room 3)
and family on the recent arrival of a baby girl.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Chazz
(room 2) and Tate (room 7) Van Veen and
family as Chazz and Tate’s Opa passed away

Dear families
A huge thank you to our 2016 fete coordinators - Mrs Kiim Parnell and Mrs Leanne Brennan-for
their outstanding leadership and organisation of our school fete last Saturday. Special thanks also to Mrs Kathy Mavros who worked tirelessly to source our sponsors and to the students and staff of
St John’s Catholic College who assisted so willingly with the set up on Friday and the BBQ.
St Mary’s is one of only a few schools in Darwin that holds a fete each year and we are blessed to have such dedicated and committed people who enable this to happen. I commend our P & F, stall
coordinators, parents and staff who have been so generous with their time and efforts. Your contributions have been instrumental in raising much needed funds for St Mary’s students and in building a rich and spirit-filled com-
munity. My sincere thanks to our fete sponsors for their kind donations to St Mary’s school. Please see this week’s newsletter entry from the P & F acknowledging our sponsors and the many people and businesses who contributed
to the success of our fete.
Highlights: Thank you to the students, staff and families for your support and hard work this Semester. Year 5/6
students shared some of their term highlights with me this week:

Yvonne Goolagong clinic at the Darwin Tennis Centre
Athletics Carnival and Little House winning after 14 years!
OLSH feast day
P & F fete
Buddy Classes and working with our buddies
Mother’s Day Liturgy and morning tea
V8 visit
St John’s College visits for Year 5/6-Dance and Drumming
Semester 2 Staffing: There will be some minor changes to staffing next term. Ms Zufferey is tak-
ing leave to pursue her travel and artistic passions and Mrs Hicks is returning to relief teaching so that she can spend more time with her family. We are currently recruiting replacements for Pascale
and Belinda with the position still to be finalised. Parents will be informed as soon as the appoint-ment/s have been made. Please join us at our Mass this Friday morning as we farewell and thank
Ms Pascale Zufferey and Mrs Belinda Hicks for their valued contributions and pray for them in their future endeav-
ours.
Construction Works: A number of upgrades to St Mary’s Community of Learners and St Mary’s school have been scheduled to take place during the school holiday period 27th June-22nd July. Community of Learners works
include the replacement of the playground soft fall and louvres and security screens in the Centre. School building works include the construction of a covered walkway to the library and Hall, a new workshop for Mr Malcolm and
landscaping of the Cavanagh Street Walkway garden. We have deliberately scheduled this work to take place in
the school holidays to minimise disruption to children, families and staff.

Pupil Free Day: A final reminder that Monday 25th July is a Pupil free day for students in Catholic
Education. St Mary’s staff will be participating in a professional development day focused on Maths and Information Technology. Outside school hours care will be available for children on this day. Please
email OSHC coordinator-Kirsten Wilson- at [email protected] for bookings.
Social Media: Teachers have been working with our senior students regarding the appropriate use of social media including Instagram and Facebook. Included in this week’s newsletter is some excellent information for parents in
relation to Instagram. We ask parents to read this information, bearing in mind that Instagram and Facebook
should be restricted to users 13 years or older. Parents might like to consider deleting these accounts particularly if the use of social media is impacting negatively on your child.
Talent Quest winners from the Fete will be announced tomorrow (Thursday).
To Freddie Richards (room 5) and Nguyen Nguyen (room 1) and families who leave our school community this week.
Thank you for your support this Semester.
I hope you all have a very safe and enjoyable holiday break.
I look forward to seeing you when students return on Tuesday 26th July.

Making Jesus Real “MJRiscenteredonthebeliefthatwearetheimageofJesustoall thosearoundus.

Last week, we were very lucky to have Peter Mitchell, the founder of MJR, come up from Tasmania to run
sessions with the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 students. Peter also ran a staff professional development evening on
Wednesday and spoke with the School Board on Thursday.
Peter discussed how the MJRprogramcanbeincorporatedintooureverydaylifeatschool throughthe

wantto‘see’inourstudents”.
You may have noticed children being a little more helpful around home last week after Peter spoke to them
about ‘Teamwork at Home’, one of the units in MJR.
One of the key things to remember about MJR is that:
“Religion is easy. Every time you smile, say please, thanks or sorry, help someone by picking up pencils when
they fall on the floor, open a door for someone, give a compliment, etc – you are LIVING your religion. It’s
part of your life – it’s part of who you are. In other words, you are living out being WEST” (Welcoming, En-
couraging, Say Sorry, Give Thanks).
Celebrations We look forward to parents, friends and family members joining us for our end of Term Liturgy on Friday,
24th June at 9.00a.m. in St Mary’s Star of the Sea Cathedral. Year 3/4, Room 1 will be preparing the Lit-
urgy.

A reminder that it is essential that your child wear a hat and sun screen during weekly PE sessions this term as we prepare for
our up and coming Athletics Carnival. Students who don’t have a hat will be required to sit and observe the PE session rather
than partake.
Also, if your child is unable to participate in PE lessons for any reason, please send a note along with your child or email me di-
rectly at [email protected]

Indigenous Tennis come and Try Day
On Monday the 20th of June 15 students participated in the Evonne Goolagong Tennis come and try day. We were placed
into age groups and then we learned how to play tennis. Our main coach was named Anzac, he taught us a range of skills like
back hand and 4 hand on a tennis racket.
Evonne Goolagong was ranked the number one player in the world in 1971 and 1976. Evonne has won the Australian open 4
times and Wimbledon twice. It was a real honour to meet Evonne and all the students that attended had a fabulous day.

P&F NEWS
Thank You St Mary’s for putting on a wonderful Twilight Fete
Well done St Mary’s, thanks for coming along and supporting our Twilight Fete. It was a very busy weekend & a busy evening; an evening that is very much dependent on the help, donations and sponsorships from our families, staff and the St Mary’s Community. Thank you to everyone who helped set up the fete on Friday and Saturday and packed it away afterwards. To all the par-ents, families, staff and friends of St Mary’s who donated, sponsored, worked and attended the fete; your efforts are re-ally appreciated. A really big thank you to all the Fete Sponsors, large and small, every donation is appreciated and St Mary’s is really thankful to have had you all on board. A HUGE thank you to all our Fete and Stall Coordinators who worked extremely hard to put together their stalls, without them, there would be no fete: Leanne Brennan, Kathy Mavros, Clalia Mar, Rebecca FitzGerald, Kiim Parnell, Tiziana Hucent, Jo-Anne Christie, Cindy Law-less, Jonah Playford, Tanya Brady, Nicky Coleman, Elizabeth Church, Linda Reeves, Koula Saraglou, Julie Robinson, Kelly Whitty and Tanya Hollamby. A BIG thanks to their families for lending them to us over the fete period. Special thanks to all the Teachers & Staff who assisted in the organisation of the class stalls and fete in general. Special thanks to Mr Malcolm for doing all those fete things that needed doing & for setting up his home made best Dunking Dunny in the whole world. All our coordinators were very appreciative of the help they received from the parents & staff, who helped out with the working bees and assisted with the running of their stalls on the night.
Huge thanks to Rebecca Fitzgerald who coordinated the Fete Bank on the night and to both Louise and Julie for assisting. The final tally for the fete will be finalized as soon as all the bills are paid, so if you have an invoice for the fete, please pass it on to Rebecca. Takings for the night were approximately $11,500. Thank you St Mary’s for supporting this event.
A special mention to the students from St John’s College who helped set up Friday afternoon, assisted on the stalls & packed up the Fete Saturday night. Your help certainly made a difference to the stall coordinators involved.
Colouring-in competition
Thanks to everyone who entered the colouring in competition. Lots of wonderful entries this year, prizes in each age group were announced at Friday’s assembly. If you haven’t seen them, they are displayed on the after school care glass doors, go have a look. Thank you Koula Saroglou for coordinating the competition.

Creative Kids Art Classes
Semester 2, 2016
In Semester 2 I will be offering after-school art lessons. I am planning on teaching two groups; one run on a Tuesday afternoon and one on a Wednesday afternoon. Classes will run for 6 weeks of each term from 3:15 until 5pm. Starting Tuesday, 9 August and finishing on Wednesday, 14 September. They are suitable for all ages and will be run at school, upstairs in room 13.
Some of the ideas for classes include working with colour families to create hues and tones, using stamping techniques to create texture, looking at individual styles of artists, painting canvases and inves-tigating pattern as a decorative design. These activities may vary according to particular interests that may arise during our investigations of the various art elements.
The cost of the 6 classes is $210 per child and $180 for every additional child in the same family. This will need to be paid at enrolment to secure a place. Classes are limited to 12 children and will be run by my-self and another adult.
All materials are provided but students will need to bring an art smock (an old shirt is fine) and after-noon tea if they like.
If you would like to enrol your child in the program, please collect an enrolment form from the front of-fice at school, or contact me on 0403 429230 for any queries or email me at [email protected]
You will be put on a waiting list if there is a big demand.
Kind regards
Mrs Susanne Kinnell
