Woodside Road Closures San Mateo County and Cal Fire are working on a major brush removal project along Kings Mountain Road including brush clearing with widening of the archery fire roads this summer. This impacts the Kings Mountain archery range as the area being cleared is from Highway 35 through Huddart Park to east of the Main Gate. There is single lane control near Woodside Road. Kings Mountain Road will be closed while the work is being done. Gary Johnston is in contact with the county parks department and the county arborist to try to stay informed of the work progress and schedule. As of this time, a specific start / finish date is unknown. Also unknown are the exact dates that Kings Mountain road will be closed. As we get the information, we will endeavor to distribute the information via e-mail, the KMA website and Facebook. If you (KMA members) go to the range and find the road closed, please post it on Facebook: Kings Mountain Archers or/ Kings Mountain Archers Fan Club or email [email protected] so Mike can notify the club members.

Work Party #4 Report Saturday June 15, a work party was held to pre-pare the range for the 3D shoot. The animals were placed at the targets, the trail was groomed, coolers and food were prepped, and the clubhouse neatened and organized. Then we were fed a delicious lunch of tri-tip sandwiches, potato salad and apple cobbler. Thank you to all who got the range ready for the 3D in the Red-woods: Chris Miller, Bob Nahmens, Rick

Lombardo, Gloria Purcell, Jim Purcell, Kelly Yamada, Robert Wurgaft, Rick Hanson, Guy Purcell, Gary Johnston, Tanya Soluk, Jeff Buell, Les Vander Wal, Mike Anderson and Cindy Vail. Club Business Meeting Changed Happy Independence Day! As most of us would rather be watching fireworks and partying with family and friends, the Club Business meeting on July 4 is being rescheduled. The KMA Club Board and Business meeting will be held on Thursday, July 11 at the Veterans Memorial Building in the Sunset Room, same time as usual with the club meeting starting at 7:30 pm. Refreshments will be served.

June Club Shoot The June Novelty Shoot was the special 5 yards to 100 yards (2 arrow) novelty shoot, back for a second year. If anybody thinks this is easy (only 40 arrows), come ahead and shoot it next year! I can always use a good laugh!

Range Captains Report Thank you to all the hard working people who came to work party #3 on Saturday June 1st. Robert Wurgraft, John Morris, Karen Boyer, Mike and Annika Furukawa (new members), Mike Anderson, Tanvir Mudhar and Dave Stewart all helped out. Later everyone passed out from food comas from Les Vander Wal’s amazing cooking pulled pork, spicy rice with beans and strawberry cobbler!! Rick Lombardo, Gary Johnston and I picked up 2 truck loads of bales Thursday May 30th to be able to rebuild the practice range on Saturday. We have lots of new members who have stepped up and many members who have never been to a single work party in the last 2 years that I’ve been coming. There are always jobs that need doing. If you can’t make a particular date, email me at: [email protected] and I will work with you to find days, times and tasks that you can do. Any offers of help will be gratefully received.

Sadly, we’ve had a new rash of vandalism at KMA. Brand new targets that Rick Lombardo and I put up less than a month ago were de-stroyed by someone using a throwing knife. Two days after running new targets on 1-14, the first 6 targets were shredded with deep cuts from throwing knives. Target #9 which is a Morrell bag target was shot with a hunting broadhead and slashed with a knife when the person had trouble getting their arrow out. If you see people at KMA not respecting our range call the Rangers at San Mateo County Parks Dept. 650-851-1210, 650-851-0326 or San Mateo County Sheriff’s office.

3D in the Redwoods Report The 3D in the Redwoods is KMA’s BIGGEST event of the year. This is true in terms of the number of archers, the number of KMA volunteers, the food made and served, the awards given and the cleanup effort at the end of the day. As usual, the day started before dawn with fog blowing through the trees. Early-birds arrived at 6:45 am to find Jim Purcell staring at an upside-down canopy. It blew off the clubhouse deck in the middle of the night. We righted the canopy (no significant damage) and then proceeded to setup the clubhouse with electricity, propane stoves, griddles, etc. Matt and Silvia Martinelli began to do their magic; cooking breakfast with the help of Stephen Nellis. Thanks to Peter Palomo who brought coffee and donuts, giving a jolt of sugar and caffeine to keep us going. T he a rcher s began to arrive for the shoot a little before 7am. Mike Anderson and Cindy Vail d irect ed the parking, with guests in the upper parking lot and volunteers on the fire road executive parking area. The piles of rocks in the upper parking lot had been pushed pack to give us room for 4 more cars. By the start of the shoot, we had parked over 65 cars. A big thanks to all those that carpooled!

Registration began at 7am, under the dripping boughs of the redwood trees. Emily Palomo, Guy Purcell and Karen Boyer worked the registration desk, and effic ient ly p r o c e s s e d t he

registration of 91 archers. What a crowd! This year, the Raffle Table crew, Gloria Purcell and Robert Casey, were selling the raffle tickets at the

end of the registration table. It made perfect sense, since the archers wallets and money were already out. Many many raffle tickets were sold. Gary Johnston and Mike Fuge brought ice for the drink and snack coolers, and then Bob Nahmens and Gary delivered the coolers around the range on the ATV. It would not be good for the archers to lack energy from thirst or hunger. Gary then gave the shoot talk to all the waiting archers, and the 3 D i n t h e Redwoods shoot began with air horns and car horns at 9:15am.

The Purcell clan, plus a few others, arrived to take over the clubhouse kitchen to prepare lunch. Ali Vijeh cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs. Amber Vijeh, Mitra Vijeh, Gilbert Martinez, Megan Casey, Robert Casey all pitched in to prep the food and setup everything for serving. Connie Phillips managed the cashbox while keeping an eye on Peter Palomo as he stirred and served chili.

Thanks to Melissa Lui who brought brownies and broccoli pasta salad, and to Gloria Purcell who brought macaroni salad to round out the lunch menu.

The Raffle table was full of d o n a t i o n s acquired and organized by Gloria Purcell. Tickets were sold all day long, with Mitra

and Gilbert walking the range to sell even more tickets. The Raffle crew, Megan Casey and Robert Casey, with Gloria, drew the winning tickets and distributed the prizes to the excited ticket holders.

3D in the Redwoods (cont.) Emily Palomo was the scorekeeper this year with help from Karen Boyer and Mike Anderson. Name plates written, scorecards collected and scores sorted highest to lowest kept them busy. Finally, with the last score card turned in; the awards could be presented. It was a lively awards ceremony punctuated with applause as Cindy Vail announced the winners and presented them with stylish mugs, keychains or ribbons. The 3D shoot was over, with the vital c l e a nu p c ho r e s r e ma in ing . Bo b Nahmens and the clean-up crew: Jeff Buell, Andreas and Sabrina Schulten, Johan Ballin, Mitra V i j e h , G i l b e r t Martinez and Guy Purcell brought up the 3D animals from the range and stored them in the container. Bob also brought up the coolers. The kitchen crew cleaned the clubhouse and made everything neat and tidy. The cleanup was finished and we shut the gates at 5:30 pm. Thank you to everyone! You made the 3D in the Redwoods a big success!

The Carp Shoot Report The annual Carp Shoot was held on June 2, on a beautiful day with very little wind and not too much heat. Only five KMA archers tried their luck in the ditches, sloughs and shallow ponds at the Wildlife Preserve: Emily Palomo 2nd VP, Peter Palomo, Matt Martinelli, Jim Purcell and Gloria Purcell. Jim and I arrived first and signed in; it took two hours to get there from Belmont, and definitely worth getting up early enough to get there at about 9:20 am. The others arrived shortly afterward. As soon as they signed in, we all went out to Parking Lot 3 and started exploring, or hunting, or in my case, strolling. I love going there to watch the birds and other wildlife. I have never managed to shoot a carp. Alas, this time I quickly realized after a mere 50 yards or so from the truck that I was not going to be able to carry the weight of the bow, loaded as it was with heavy fishing arrow and reel with line roll. I staggered back to the truck to sit down and broke out my ever-present book to read. In between sentences, I enjoyed the scenery. I decided to make a list. From entrance parking lot to #3, I saw: a king snake swimming, a black duck, a rabbit, 4 swallows, a red-winged blackbird, 3 sulfur butterflies and a distant flock of birds. Within the approximately 100 yards of my hunting journey, I saw: 8 sulfur butterflies, 2 orange-black spot butterflies, 3 red-winged blackbirds, a squirrel, honeybees and lots of other bees in a field of obviously delicious white flowers, 2 large egrets swooping repeatedly around, a muskrat, a camp-robber jay, a brownish bird, a crow, and heard: 4 bullfrogs, a frog with a “blaat” sound, lots of cheeping frogs and birdsong. When everyone got back after an hour or so, nobody had seen any carp at all and it was getting hotter, so we gave up and went home. Next year we need to get a much earlier date and catch some carp! We had to explain this to a very skeptical cat when we got home. Gloria Purcell
