Explore your creative side Fridays 1-3pm this summer at the Ionia County Commission on Aging Senior Center, 115 Hudson St in Ionia. Bring your own project!

FIT TO BE TIED QUILTERS

Meets every Friday at 130 E. Washington Street in Ionia from 9am until 2pm,

and welcomes new members to sew, press, tie off and cut quilts – or anyone

who would like to help make quilts for donation to families in need and other

worthy organizations in the Ionia Area. Donations of fabric and new batting

are always welcome!

YARN CIRCLE

Every Thursday at the Ionia County Commission on Aging. After dinner, sit with friends

for knitting, crocheting, or other yarn play, while listening to the music of Grand Valley

Strings.

BRIDGE and EUCHRE Each Week at Ionia County COA

Join the fun! The Ionia County COA hosts weekly card games for Bridge and Euchre

devotees.

A place to connect with other caregivers who truly

understand what you are going through.

Ionia County Commission on Aging offers a FREE exchange

on durable medical equipment. We receive donations and

re-distribute equipment to other Ionia County Seniors in

need of items. Call (616) 527-5365 to donate equipment

or if you’re in need of any equipment.

We are not able to receive all items, but we do regularly

receive and give away items including walkers, shower

seats, canes, wheelchairs, commodes, toilet seat risers, etc.

We also take donations of DEPENDS (“Pull-up” type ONLY).

The Ionia County Commission on

Aging offers a variety of IN-HOME

supportive services to seniors aged

60 and older. These services are

provided by friendly, experienced and

highly-trained staff from right here in

our community!

Our in-home services include Home Health

Aide, Home Maker Aide & Respite Services.

HOME HEALTH AIDES provide assistance with

bathing/showering, hair care, skin care,

transferring & getting dressed.

HOME MAKER AIDES provide assistance with light

housework including vacuuming, sweeping,

mopping, cleaning the bathroom or kitchen, doing

dishes, laundry, or grocery shopping.

RESPITE AIDES provide relief to a caregiver and

tasks may include doing housework, assisting with

bathing/showering, preparing meals or just

companionship. The caregiver does not have to

live with the care recipient in order to receive

respite services.

Many of our services are available at little to no

cost, with suggested donations ranging from $5

and up per hour. A cost share may apply in the

case of respite services, which is determined by

a client’s ability to pay. In some cases there is no

cost to the client. A limited number of RESPITE

CERTIFICATES (for care in the home or a stay

outside the home) are also available.

FOOT & TOENAIL CARE \

Ionia County Commission on Aging provides routine foot care (toenail trimming) in the home for Ionia

County seniors. $10 per hour charge for this service, performed by COA’s In Home aides.

COA is unable to provide foot care to those with diabetes or who take blood thinners. However,

diabetics may be covered by Medicare Part B if service service is performed by a podiatrist, and you are under the active care of a doctor of medicine or osteopathy

who has documented that you have diabetes.

“MAKING MEMORIES”

Day Camp

Provides a day of respite for caregivers

while their loved ones enjoy music,

Take the ONE DAY SMART DRIVER COURSE

Weds. Sept. 12th, from 8:45am-5:00pm.

The classroom course costs $15 for AARP

members, $20 for non-members. Space is

limited, register now by calling (616) 527-5365.

The AARP Smart Driver Course teaches valuable defensive driving strategies and provides a refresher of the rules of

the road. Since 1979, the course has helped more than 15 million drivers learn research-based tips to adapt their

driving to compensate for physical and cognitive changes that may occur with aging. Plus, you may qualify for a multi-

year automobile insurance discount by completing the course (check with your auto insurance agent for details).

Course held at the ICCoA . Cost payable to the instructor in cash, money order, or personal check made out to

AARP. Snack (popcorn), coffee and water for attendees during the training session.

There will be a 45 minute lunch break, with a “Lunch to Go” available:

$3 donation for Seniors 60+; $3 charge if under 60.
