NEWSLETTER Issue 3, Term 3 2015 From the Principal Welcome to our newsletter for Term 2. It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through our school year for 2018. As always, it has been a very busy term with a number of excursions and activities that our students and staff have been involved in. We have welcomed a number of Year 6 students who have been in the process of trialling for our Specialist Programs for 2019 as well as those students from our feeder Primary Schools who have been a part of the after school RASE program. Our Senior School students held their “Light up the Night” School Ball on 22 June at the Parmelia Hilton. What a fantastic night, the behaviour of our students was outstanding and the venue was brilliant. A big thank you to our Year 11/12 Student Coordinator Mrs Gough and her ball committee who organised this wonderful evening for us all to share in. A heartfelt thank you to our staff who attended the event in their free time (for also putting on an amazing dance spectacular) and also to our wonderful students. Our Dance students once again did an amazing job performing at Octagon this term. The performance was held at the University of WA Octagon Theatre, where our students showcased their hard work to parents and the Perth community. The performances were a great success and it was a fantastic opportunity to see our students performing their routines alongside other schools. Congratulations to all the students who were involved and a big thank you to Mrs Brown, staff who attended and helped on the evening. The School Board AGM was held on 21 May. At this very important event, our School Board Chair, Mr John Simmons, stepped down from the role that he has been in for the last 7 years. A new School Board Chair was elected and I would like to congratulate Mrs Patchara Weggers on her election. I look forward to working with you in the coming year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank John Simmons for his tireless hard work and energy and dedication to making Rockingham Senior High School the best school it can be. The process for the new Principal of Rockingham Senior High School has been completed and I am very happy to let the community know that I have been selected as the successful applicant for the position. I look forward to working with the students, staff and community over the upcoming years, continuing to build on our successes and strong standing in the local community. As we head into the development of a new Business Plan, I look forward to the challenges ahead and will maintain the focus of growing the ‘whole of child’ in a positive and nurturing environment. As always we need to say goodbye and thank you to some of our staff who will be leaving us this term. Mrs Chamberlain will be going on maternity leave and we all wish her well as she embarks on this journey. Thank you to Mrs James who is leaving us after 11 years as she embarks to the Eastern States. Mr Lim has secured a position as a music teacher in a Primary School and we wish him well. I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable the two week break and I look forward to seeing you all when school returns on Tuesday, 17 July. Term two was a tough one with all year groups having some form of exams. This put a lot of us under pressure to perform well, but thanks to the RSHS sta support, we pulled through. This led us to Careers Week. Many representatives came down from universities, TAFE and workplaces to help us decide our path after high school. The Senior School Ball was a blast, with many students and teachers alike busting a move. Being such a successful night, many thanks are given to Ms Gough and the ball committee for all their hardwork and time spent preparing. One of the highlights was definitely the amazing food buet. Towards the end of the term, with Senior School camps finished and most of the semester work done, students are able to focus on the Tryathon. Many of us are looking forward to this event, as its great to see everyone come together for such a great cause. The fortnightly “Chats with the Captains was again a success, with many of the student leaders coming up with great ideas and suggestions on how to improve as a school and as individuals. Now with one term down and one to go, the Year 12s are counting down the days until graduation.

Once again our Specialist Programs, Student Leaders and a team of Mainstream All-Stars Students will be participating in the Annual Tryathon, which helps to raise funds and support Telethon. This term, as part of Telethon’s recognition of the amount of funds raised by our students, staff representatives Mr Isaac Thomas and Mr Matt Di Gregorio were invited to be a

part of the Telethon Beneficiary Celebration at Crown Towers. This event celebrated the hard work of organisations and individuals who have contributed significantly to Telethon! They made a big deal of Rockingham Senior High School and our massive contribution over the last 5 years through the Tryathon event. Well done Rockingham, your efforts and generosity are amazing!

Three students represented RSHS at the State Championships of the Brain Bee competition held at UWA in early June. All Year 10 ACE students competed in Round 1 of the competition. The students who achieved high scores were then invited to participate in the state competition. Brody Gilchrist, Tahlia Ryan and Yingting Sun formed a team to challenge teams from 21 schools from across the state. Our students answered questions on neuroscience as individuals and as a team. They also had a tour of the UWA Science facilities and attended lectures and presentations from Professors and Researchers as part of the program. Our team worked extremely hard and just missed out on being in the top three. Well done team!

The Year 9-12 Dance students did an amazing job performing at the South of the Swan Dance Festival at the Octagon Theatre UWA, on Tuesday the 19th of June. With 88 of our students making their way to the venue on two buses, performing choreography of a contemporary dance and jazz genre, they rehearsed on stage and performed with costumes, lights and pushed through the nerves in order to entertain over 200 people in the audience. We have had so much positive feedback from staff backstage and those who watched the performance. Students did a great job of representing our school, portraying great focus and positivity backstage. I would like to say a big thank you to those staff members who helped backstage on the night and to parents and staff who came to watch the show. We really appreciate your ongoing support! Congratulations again to those who performed. I am so proud of each and every one of you, for your hard work and dedication to make this another successful event. We look forward to the next concert in Term 3 which will be held at Koorliny Arts Centre.

In Science, our Year 7 Maritime Program students were able to put their Biological Science knowledge that they have gained throughout this term to practice.

At AQWA the students identified adaptions of various Western Australian species and explained how those adaptions enable them to be successful in their environment. They walked in the shoes of a shark biologist and used their data skills learnt in Mathematics this term to log data on a sharks location and behaviour within the shipwreck coast tank. They described the interrelationships of organisms within a variety of marine environments and identified the food chains the organisms are within. Students then participated in a Department of Fisheries Laboratory on classifying organisms that wash up on our beaches. Students worked together to successfully group organisms into their kingdoms and they were able to identify some of our plants and animals into their phylum, using group cooperation, their knowledge and a little bit of help here and there. Mrs Melrose, Mrs Page, the Department of Fisheries representative and myself were impressed with the students’ willingness to dive into a bucket of seaweeds and their knowledge of classifying organisms. The students learnt about the policies outlined by the Department of Fisheries and their significance for maintaining sustainable fish populations for future generations and they know how they can play a role in protecting our beaches and the marine environment. The students were great representatives of our school with the only mishap being some car sickness from the long bus ride. They are to be commended for their enthusiasm throughout the day and for taking control of their learning by participating wholeheartedly in the activities! Good job Year 7s!

On Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd of June, Dance students were presented with an amazing opportunity to attend a workshop with 4 professional artists from Sydney Dance Company. The workshops were a great success with over 40 participating students. Each workshop ran for 2 hours where students applied contemporary dance techniques, were taught repertoire from the companies upcoming show and participated in a creative dance workshop. The students involved stepped up to the challenge, displaying their hard work ethic and great creative skills in developing original dance choreography by using a variety of stimulus. It was great to see the year groups integrate together, step out of their comfort zones and challenge their abilities. Well done for all those involved!

Mrs Kirsty Brown (Richards), Dance teacher

The iMEN Project is a program of the Kwinana Industries Council and focuses on Year 10s. It is targeted towards VET students from our partnering schools in the region and aims to trigger an awareness that careers in industry are in fact achievable to them. The program highlights the commitment Kwinana industry has to engaging students in the workforce and provides an opportunity for young males to see what industry really looks like. As a part of a group, participants identify the employment and career pathways in the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIC); this significant industrial region of Western Australia. It includes visits to a range of industries in the KIA for a site tour and to meet current employees in a range of roles. This gives students the opportunity to reflect on their possible future involvement in the local workforce. This year 4 of our Year 10 students participated in the iMen project: Jack Button, Jack Lim, Thomas Beever and Damien Morgan. Participated in several workshops, including:

Site Tours to various industrial sites in the Kwinana Industrial Area.

Resume Writing: students are given help and advice to produce their own professional resume.

Mock Interviews: students discuss and learn interview techniques in preparation for their individual mock interview with a representative from industry.

Social Media: students are guided through the use of social media platforms and etiquette.

Health and Wellbeing: students reflect on their health and wellbeing and set personal achievable goals.

Presentation & Personal Development Skills: increased confidence and self esteem.

The students had a fantastic experience and represented our school with much pride. Congratulations on successfully completing this project boys.
