Youth Parliament

Elections

On Thursday 6th February The Blandford

School took part in a county-wide election to

vote for young people to represent them in

the UK Youth parliament (UKYP). Although

we had no one from The Blandford School

standing as a candidate, the elected

member will represent views across their constituency. Once elected

Blandford School Network Talent Show

On Friday 7th February The Blandford School hosted the third Blandford

Schools‘ Network Talent Show. It was such a special event, and wonderful

to see some of the talent that is present in our feeder primary schools. The

show was judged by our own Headteacher Mrs Sally Wilson, along with Mr

Graham Haigh and Mr Brian Winkle, who had the very difficult task of

picking a winner. The compères for the afternoon were TBS students

Thomas Henley and Francesca Yeatman who did a fantastic job and fellow

student Jonathan Cox helped behind the scenes to make sure everything

ran smoothly on the day. Among all the amazing acts, we had a magic

show performed by Leon Somerville and Tristan Day from Spetisbury

Primary, Rowan Geilern from Milldown Primary School who

treated us all to his stand up Comedy routine and Molly Carter from Blandford St Mary

Primary School wowed the audience with her beautiful ballet performance.

Once all the Primary School acts had performed, and while the judges were

considering their decision, the audience were entertained by performances by some of

The Blandford Schools own home grown talent, including Sam Greenwood and

Charlotte Legg on the piano and singers Emma Wright and Freya Inglis. After much

deliberation the judges announced Leah Crabbe from Archbishop

Wake as the winner who had performed a beautiful

dance routine, the judges said she had exceptional

poise and linked every move with the music, as well

has engaging with the audience. Second place was

awarded to Mendho Sherpa from Downlands for her

Nepalese dance and third place went to The

Pimperne School Dancers who danced their routine

to the Thriller soundtrack. Overall it was a wonderful

afternoon, enjoyed by all those involved; we can‘t

wait to see what new acts the BSN Talent Show

will produce in 2015.

Generous Donation

Local Business Ragtags has very

generously donated £1000.00 to

The Blandford School student

support fund, which was originally

established with a contribution by

Ragtags in 2012. The fund is

used to assist students from year

7 through to year 11 by providing

uniform, books and equipment as

well as contributing towards the

cost of trips that are important for certain courses, for

those students who may otherwise have to go without

these essentials. It is wonderful to see how the

community and school are working so closely together

support each other. Alison Falconer owner of Ragtags

said ― I am so happy to work with The Blandford School,

and to help with the free school uniform, and so pleased

to be able to contribute towards

some of the pastoral care work that

is done‖.

Massive Mega Music

Meltdown

On the evening of Saturday

8th February The Blandford

School reverberated to the

sound of an eclectic mixture of quality rock music.

Organised by Year 13 music students, Elias Mead and

Gavin Marish, as part of their Level 3 BTEC Music

Technology course, the Massive Mega Music Meltdown

was well received by the enthusiastic audience. All profits

raised from the event will go towards the PCA‘s

forthcoming summer production of ―Les Misérables‖ (at

The Tivoli Theatre). After the four school bands, (Last

Resort, The Grind, Fourway in a Barrel and Stark) had

completed their highly entertaining sets, the evening

concluded with music from well-known local pub bands,

Riff Mission and Punk on your Hits. Feedback from the

audience was really positive. We are all hoping that

MMMM will be the first of many such music festivals held

at The Blandford School. If you want to see these bands

perform again soon, why not go along to Teddy Rocks in

the town centre in May 2014?

Sporting News TBS Netball Leaders lend

a hand.

For the second year running The Blandford School was asked to send

Netball Leaders along to help officiate at the South West of England Schools tournament. Six girls from the school attended and did a variety of essential jobs like collating score tables, collecting score cards and time keeping. Lesley Thomas the Chair of South West Schools said ―Many thanks again for bringing the team of Young Leaders from The Blandford School to the tournament last Saturday. They were well organised, helpful, polite and worked hard. They were invaluable to the efficient running of the tournament - please pass on our thanks to them and their school‖. The girls involved were: Bethan Amey, Alyce Peaty, Flo Bailey, Emma Sully, Ashlea Gale and Georgie Bailey

storm to victory

On Wednesday 5th February, 60

children from Blandford St Mary,

Archbishop Wake, Durweston,

Spetisbury and Milldown participated in

an indoor 6-a-side football tournament

organised by TBS students. In very

close, well played matches Blandford

St Mary emerged as the overall winners after being level with

Milldown in the round robin stages. The winner was decided by

a Beat-The-Keeper challenge, which was hotly contested by all

schools. The penalties on the day were enough to put the

England team to shame! By Sam Eager Y13

Cross Country Championships

After recent success in cross country, two Blandford School cross country runners have been selected to represent Dorset at the English Schools Cross Country Championships. Michael Johnson (year 8) came 5

th in Dorset, putting him through to

represent the Junior Boys Dorset Cross Country Team, and Sixth Former Ryan Walbridge qualified in 4

th place, who will

now be representing Dorset in the Senior Boys Cross Country Team, at the English Schools event later this year. This is a fantastic achievement and shows the dedication and commitment both students have put into their training with Wimborne Athletics Club over the winter. We wish them the best of luck for their races at English Schools and hope they can continue to achieve in their sport.
