Day 1

Inauguration Ceremony

The workshop was inaugurated by worshipping goddess Saraswati and lightening the Diyas in

front of the idol. The dignitaries present were Chief Guest Shri. Anil Datar (Director General,

DRDO), Guest of honor Shri. K. D. Deodhar (Group Director ARDE), Dr. B. S. Karkare

(Principal, VIIT Pune), Dr. S. S. Chinchanikar (HOD Mechanical Dept),Prof. Ashok R. Mache

Inaugural Talk

The first session of the day was started with an inaugural talk by the Chief Guest Shri. Anil Datar

(Director General, DRDO). He emphasized on the application of composite materials in arms and

weapons industries; and how the conventional materials are been replaced by the composite

material in defense sector.

Session 1

The first session of the day was conducted by Mr. K. D. Deodhar (Scientist F, Group Director,

ARDE, Pune). He talked on Introduction to Composite Materials by taking a case Study on

composite barrel for shoulder fire gun. He also discussed about the importance of synthetic fibers

in defence sectors.

After lunch break, the next session was

conducted by Dr. Rahul Harshe. He was

welcomed and felicitated by Dr A.P. Kulkarni.

It was really wonderful session where he talked

about various composite manufacturing

processes and. methods. He enlightened on

further improvement in existing manufacturing

methods. He also explained about the RAVTM

process.

Day Two

Session 1

The first session of the day two was started

by Dr. Makarand Joshi (Ph.D. Clemson

University, USA) SC(G) R&DE (Engr),

Dighi, Pune. He was welcomed and

felicitated by Mr. Khadilkar sir. He talked on

large composite structures for high

performance applications. He presented case

study on Composites Sonar Dome, 25m long

bridge made out of composite materials etc.

After this there was session by Dr. Anoop

Anand (Ph.D. Cochin Uni of Sci & Tech)

SC(D) R&DE(Engr), Dighi, Pune. His topic

was Structural Composites with Nano

materials. He talked on hybridization of

structural composites with nano fillers. Nano

silica in carbon epoxy composite. He also

explained the process such as Resin flim

infusion, Dynamic mechanical analysis He

mentioned about processing of graphene nano-

ribbon based hybrid composite for

electromagnetic shielding. It was really very

Session 3

After lunch, the next session started with the

speaker Dr. Ramadas C (Ph.D. - IIT Madras

SC(E) R&DE(Engr), Dighi, Pune) on Finite

Element Modeling of Laminated. He started

with basic concepts of analysis of lamina and

then how to incorporate in finite element

modelling. He explained the basic classical

lamination theory applied to the composite

laminates. The session was analytical in nature

and enjoyed by the participants.

Day Three

Session 1

On the third day of this STTP,

Dr.S.K.Panigrahi (Professor, DIAT) started

the first session on Damage Analysis of

Functionally Graded Adhesive Joints of

Laminated FRP Composite Plates and Tubes.

He discussed Strain energy release rate

(SERR) based damage analyses of functionally

graded adhesively bonded tubular lap joints of

laminated fibre reinforced plastic (FRP)

composites under varied loadings using three-

dimensional geometrically non-linear finite

Session 1

INDUSTRIAL VISIT:

An industrial visit was planned to Suvrna Fibrotech Pvt Ltd, Bhosari MIDC, Pune

Participants reached the industry by the transportation arranged by VIIT, Pune. Participants saw

different products made out of FRP such as FRP Dashboard, FRP containers, box, cabinet, and

so on. There they showed live demonstration of making meter box for Reliance. Participants

witnessed all detailing about manufacturing of composite products.After introduction,

participants were divided into groups and were headed by respective company leaders who

helped them to understand how production is carried out in company and how company reaches

its customers. We got a chance to actually visualize all the fabrication process and their

implementation in the industries.

Day Five

Session 1

On the last day of STTP, the first session was

conducted by Dr. V. K. Tripathi (Ph.D. - IIT

Kanpur) Professor, Mech Dept, GCOEP,Pune. He

was welcomed and felicitated by Dr. S. S.

Chinchanikar. Dr. Tripathi talked about the Design

Optimization of Composite Laminate. He explained

about the different method \s available to optimize a

given composite laminate by analytical and nu,erical.

Dr. Tripathi encompassed this big topic into a day to

day scenario by given simple examples and sharing

his experiences.

Dr.Ganesh Soni (Ph.D. - IIT Bombay) Lead

Application Engineer, MSC Software Ltd.,Pune was

felicitated by Prof. A. R. Mache. Dr. Soni briefed

about the Introduction to micro/ macro scale

composites modeling using finite element method.

He also briefed about the MSC produt “Digimat

capabilities for composite”.

Valedictory Function After the session, we proceeded with conclusion ceremony of the workshop. Mr. C R

More anchored the ceremony. The dignitaries present were Dr. Ganesh Soni, Dr. A P

Kulkarni, Prof. A. R. Mache and Prof. S. V. Dravid. Prof. Ashok R. Mache summarized the

five day short term training program on “Advanced Composite Workshop”.

Prof. A. R. Mache Summarized the STTP Prof. C. R. More concluded the ceremony

Dignitaries shared their thoughts and experience regarding the entire workshop.

Certificates were distributed among the participants. Feedbacks from the participants were

requested at the end of the ceremony. All the participants stated that attending the workshop was

a useful experience for them and they would

recommend attending such workshop in future.

At the end of the ceremony Prof S. V. Dravid

proposed the vote of thanks. She thanked all the

working committee, volunteers, non- teaching staff

and the participants for their valuable support for

making this workshop a grand success.

Extended Version of STTP

Dr. P. M. Mohite (Professor, IIT-Kanpur) was

felicitated by Dr. S. S. Chinchanikar. Dr. Mohite

briefed about the micro mechanics of composite

lamina. He explained about the various the theories

of composite lamina. Dr. Mohite emphasized about

the failures of fibre and matrix at micro level under

various types of loading. Session was quite

interactive and interesting.
