25 June All Day Disco/Free Dress Day 25 June Last day of Term 2 26 June Show Day Holiday 13 July Start of Term 3 23 & 24 July Year 6 ISHS - 2 Day Immersion Program 4 September Student Free Day Date Claimers: Welcome Message: Issue 17 24 th June 2020 As we will be finishing Term 2 off with our All Day Disco, Free Dress Day and sausage sizzle tomorrow, I want to remind everyone to ensure the clothes worn to school are appropriate for a school event, modest in design and in line with the Neon theme for the day. Attached to this newsletter is a copy of the Ingham State School Non-Uniform Dress Code that was recently endorsed by the P&C which clearly outlines what is and what is not appropriate dress standards for our school. Please also consider the current cold weather conditions we are experiencing and dress accordingly. As part of the All Day Disco the Student Council is asking all students and staff to give a $2.00 donation which will go towards the Student Council Project. Money raised is to be used to better the life of every student at Ingham State School. I ask everyone to dig deep and support this initiative which is the brain child of our students. Report Cards will be sent home in Week 2 of Term 3, which is a little later than usual due to the disruptions and restrictions which have affected all that we do. When school resumes in Term 3, we will see further easing of restrictions to allow some school activities to recommence. I will continue to communicate via the newsletter and Facebook as the restrictions change. Term 3 will see the return to Whole School Assemblies on Monday afternoon, which will again allow us to meet as a whole school, which is something I have missed throughout this term. We will again be able to award our Stars of the Week and acknowledge the great achievements of our students. Unfortunately, we still cannot allow parents and visitors to be a part of the assemblies but I do hope it will not be long until that decision is changed. School sport will also be returned to our school calendar but restrictions on spectators and travel arrangements are still in place. The Herbert River School Sport committee are meeting this week to clarify the conditions by which we must abide. Early in Term 3 we will communicate dates and information about how sports will operate for the remainder of 2020. As the reality of reaching the mid-point of this year sinks in, I recently took some time to reflect on all that 2020 has presented which has been a challenging, demanding, rewarding and character building year for all of us. My immediate thoughts were filled with memories of being invaded by flying foxes, talking about roosts, colonies, little reds, spectacled and grey headed bats. Then COVID-19 entered our world and we were all consumed with sanitisation, isolation, learn from home, social distancing, contact tracing and flattening the curve. But out of these challenges we have become a stronger school community, more aware of each other’s strengths and frailties and yet we continue to find ways to continue to improve what we do and how we do it. I dare not dream of what Semester 2 of 2020 has in store for us, but I do know whatever it is, we will tackle the problem together and we will work towards solutions together. The reality is there is strength in working together for the benefit of our young people. I urge all families to remain safe over the holiday period and I hope the “Train Brain” jingle is playing in everyone’s head as we adjust to the increased hazards across our district due to the cane crushing season. I urge you to enjoy the school holidays and I look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 13 July as we launch into the second half of the school year. Regards, Kevin Barnes Principal Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break. See you all Monday July 13. Be Safe Be Responsible Be Respectful

Lesson Days

Woodwind/Brass with Mrs Gunston – Thursday Strings with Mrs Wright – Wednesday afternoon (Year 4’s) and Friday

There will still be instrumental lessons for Woodwind / Brass students this Thursday, even though it is the day of the ‘All Day Disco’. The lesson timetable will be arranged so that it won’t clash with the student’s allocated disco time. All Woodwind / Brass students will need to remember to bring their instruments and music books this Thursday.

We hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday, and we look forward to seeing all of our music students in Term 3. Keep up the music practice!!!

A Message from Wilmar Sugar

Use your train brain

It’s time to use your train brain and look out for cane trains.

The Herbert region’s 2020 crushing season starts this week.

Cane trains will be on the move 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

That means people of all ages need to use their train brainsand:• Be alert• Obey signs and signals at cane railway crossings

• Keep off cane bins and cane railway tracks, especially bridges

• Always give way to cane trains

Although cane trains don’t travel very fast, they haul very heavy loads – up to 1,200 tonnes of rolling weight. That’s about the same as eight houses.

It means they take a long time to stop after brakes are applied and, unlike cars or bikes, they can’t swerve if someone or something is in the way.

So use your train brain. Give way to cane trains and stay safe this crushing season.

NON-UNIFORM DRESS CODE

“Free Dress Days”

Guidelines: Non-uniform events may be allowed on certain occasions, such as Free Dress Days, Discos, Camps, after school events or sporting trips.

Clothing needs to be clean, modest and appropriate for school wear and suitable to be worn in all curriculum areas. Closed in shoes and socks must be worn at all times.

The following may not be worn: high heel shoes, see through items of clothing, short shorts, bare midriffs, low cut tops, strapless, halter, tank or tube tops, oversize pants worn low on the hips, hoodies, excessive or large jewellery, t-shirts with inappropriate language, slogans or pictures

We ask the co-operation of parents in ensuring compliance with these guidelines before a student arrives at school on a "Non-Uniform” day or school event.

If students/families do not wish to participate in a “Non-Uniform” day, they are to wear their school uniform in accordance with the School Dress Code.

Consequences for Non-Compliance:

1. Parents will be called so that a change of clothes may be brought to school.

2. Student may not participate in the activities planned as part of the “non-uniform” day.

3. Student may lose the privilege of “free dress” on the next day it is allowed.
